You might be wondering: "well how did your tournament go?" Great question. I won! Just kidding. Sigh.
Here's a debrief (if this is interesting/helpful, please like this comment so I know whether to write more of these in the future!)
It was a 2-day tournament at Corica Park in Alameda, CA (near Oakland). I haven't been playing a lot recently (rain + making YT videos takes time) so I was hoping to shoot 75ish both days.
DAY 1: shot 81 (6/14 FW, 9/18 GIR, 34 putts). Felt like I should have shot ~77-78 given the course and my game on the day.
    Biggest issues were:
    1. Fairway bunkers: I hit 4 of them - that is what happens when you don't follow the dope game plan you put together
    2. Greens were super slick (we guessed 11-12 stimp): so all my putts went 5-10 feet by. I only had 2x 3putts, but a lot of my comebackers were over 6ft.
    3. Driving: my baby fades turned into adolescent cuts as the day progressed.
Going into day 2 I resolved to stick better to my plan and clean up my driver.
DAY 2: shot 79 (8/14FW, 10/18 GIR, 36 putts). Felt like I should have shot 72 IF I COULD HAVE BOUGHT A PUTT.
On the plus side, I hit ZERO fairway bunkers, no adolescent cuts with the driver, and I followed my game plan to a T.
    Biggest issues were:
    1. Putting: the greens were still rolling 11-12. The munis I usually play at are more like 8-10. I actually putted well-ish, making a ton more putts over 10ft than I usually do. But had 5x 3-putts. FIVE.
    2. Chipping: greens were fast. See above.
Overall, I would have liked to play a few shots better but it was a good early tournament in the year because it really made me think about what I need to focus on (putting on faster greens) for the tournaments that are coming up.
I'm VERY glad I put the time and effort into my game plan because I probably would have shot 5+ strokes higher without it. Helped me out even when my swing didn't co-operate.
Thanks for watching/reading - would love to hear if this is interesting/helpful/familiar 😃

I've watched like 7 videos of yours in a row. Great content! The distinct lack of "umm" and "uhh" while you speak is absolute magic. Keep it up!

Another great video Manu! I'm so surprised (and grateful) that there is someone else out there like me that geeks out on this stuff. I thought i was the only one :)

Such good advice. The best golfers I know always play holes differently then the average golfer when it comes to club choice

YES! It's a subtle difference but then they score so much better. Took me two years of giving my buddy my money (thanks Alex) before I finally asked what he was doing differently...

Manu, a couple things I do, I made a list of all of my clubs on an index card with the carry distance and total distance. I've found that in the heat of a round I often start inflating my distances, and this helps to bring me back to reality. I think this saves me a lot of strokes not missing carries (over water, bunkers, etc.). Also, the night before a round I write down what time I need to leave, then what time to shower, get up, etc. So that I dont dally and leave late. I can sleep better knowing that I have the morning planned out. Take care.

Thanks Phil! Writing down your yardages sounds like a great idea - and that awareness to know how your mind shifts in the heat of the moment... awesome!
I'm going to copy your timetable idea - I tend to get slow when I'm getting dressed in the morning and then I'm adjusting too many things on the fly in the warmup - thanks for the tip!!

@@upbeatgolfer I've only played in one but it's cool playing with better players than myself and fun having some nervous energy on the course.

thanks for the cool video! i love using arccos. it has all the strokes gained stuff, but it also has an AI caddy that allows you to 'pre-play' your round and even estimates what you should score based on current handicap. it uses all the shots i've put into the app and recommends based on what it expects me to do. i used it a few times in the winter on courses i had never played and it was pretty accurate! keep up the great work.

Glad you liked it! And thanks for the tip - I have arccos but hadn't used the caddie feature because I tend to hit lots of partial shots (like I usually hit a knockdown 7i vs a full 8i) and figured it wouldn't work - didn't know about the preview round feature. Just checked it out for the tournament course and it was pretty accurate with driving distance changes with the wind - super cool! In total it suggested I'd play that course in 77.3 shots so maybe I needed to lower my expectations a bit 😅
I'll try it out at my home course in my next round! Thanks again!

😅 That hits a little too close to home! But now we have the perfect conditions for an awesome comeback story right?!
