Thanks for this overview Doc, I think ACT would be of benefit to me. I have an appointment with a counsellor next month, would you have any suggestions about how I should talk about this with her? Any particular questions I should ask?

That's a great step you're taking, and I'm glad to hear that you're considering Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as a potential approach to address your anxiety and depression. Here are some suggestions on how to discuss this with your counselor:
      1. Express your feelings and experiences clearly: Instead of saying "I am depressed" or "I am anxious", try to express your feelings as something you're experiencing, not as an inherent part of your identity. For example, you could say "I am experiencing feelings of depression" or "I am struggling with anxiety". This can help separate your feelings from your identity.
      2. Discuss your values and goals: It's important to differentiate between your values and your goals. Your values are about the type of person you want to be, while your goals are what you want to achieve. Discussing this with your counselor can help you establish a direction for your therapy.
      3. Talk about your willingness to accept your feelings: ACT encourages individuals to accept and tolerate their thoughts and feelings rather than avoiding or fighting against them. Express your willingness to work on accepting your feelings of anxiety and depression as part of the therapeutic process.
      4. Ask about mindfulness techniques: ACT allows therapists to create or co-create mindfulness techniques with clients. Ask your counselor about these techniques and how they can be tailored to your specific needs.
      5. Discuss your life's purpose: ACT encourages individuals to take action towards a rich and meaningful life. Discuss with your counselor what a rich and meaningful life looks like to you and how you can take steps towards it.
      6. Inquire about distress tolerance: ACT encourages individuals to learn how to tolerate distress. Ask your counselor about strategies for developing distress tolerance.
Remember, it's important to be open and honest with your counselor about your feelings and experiences. This will help them understand your situation better and provide the most effective support.

@@DocSnipes Thank you so so much! I have my first appointment on December 22 and will bring this to her. I really think ACT could help me so much. The idea of learning to accept my flaws and feelings instead of trying to change them or ignore them really appeals to me.
