  • Are you having difficulty walking because your foot is bent inwards? And you have difficulty standing and walking? Then this video might help you.
If you have a spastic foot, because of a stroke, traumatic brain injury, or spinal cord injury or other neurological disease, your foot may be pointing down and turned inwards. You’ll feel that it is tight and you have difficulty walking in this video. Let’s fix that spastic foot with stretches and exercises.
The first thing that we need to do is to stretch your ankle and foot. I have a more detailed video, for a foot that is spastic and tight that is pointed down. And if you want to watch that, the link will be down below. In this video, we will quickly go through them. First way to stretch is to sit down and bring your foot back. Stay in this position for a minute. You can also do this longer. To bring that to the next level, put a rolled up towel under your foot and hold that for one minute. You can also use a wedge for this. The next way is to use a belt. Wrap the belt around your foot and pull it up. Hold that position for one minute. And the last stretch is to put a rolled up, hand, towel, or a wedge under the outer part of your foot. Hold that position for one minute.
Next technique is pillow squeezes while sitting. This will strengthen the muscles that will bring your knee inwards, which is necessary to bring your foot flat to the floor. Squeeze a pillow 10 times for 3 sets. And to bring that to the next level, try to squeeze a pillow while standing up.
Third technique is active stretching by doing sit to stand. You can do this by the kitchen sink or if you have a better balance and strength, do this on a regular chair or on your couch. And two retrain the muscles to keep your legs closer together instead of bent with the knee, pointing out, wrap a belt around your thighs. Do about 10 repetitions for three sets.
And to bring that to the next level, stay slightly bent from the knee and hip, and take a step forward and back with your unaffeced leg 10 times and then your stroke leg 10 times.
And then for prolonged stretch, you need to wear your night brace. It may not be comfortable, but this is absolutely needed in order to get the optimal result of getting your stroke foot more flat to the floor.

She can walk from 6 yrs old and as years passed, her left foot (the weak one) was turning inward and mostly putting her weight only on the outer side of her left foot when walking. CAN she used this exercise to correct her inward foot? I will appreciate any advise you can give. Thank you po in advance.

You are absolutely one of the best occupational therapist on TH-cam. When you do outpatient or home physical therapy, the therapist doesn’t truly assess your mobility ailments they just stay to their script of spinal injury/back surgery basic exercises and strengthening your core and your limbs that need attention get neglected. I’m so grateful I found your channel. I’ve had fusion surgery and decompression surgery on my back and a solid two years of physical therapy with no improvement. I’m actually worse off now than before the two surgeries. Keep helping those like me because we deserve to get back to normalcy. Thank you 😊

(if you still cannot bend the leg in this position, I think you need tie a belt around the ankle of the problem leg, the pull the leg down, just to get it going. ) it is hard at the beginning, but it will get easier when you do it more. Try it. :)
