I'm so smug over how people still haven't figured out WHY Battle-Royal "just works" for the masses when Fighting Games and other online competitive games never did -- Spoiler::::: _it's because the main result of bad matchups, works like E.L.O. in putting all the not-so-good players together in their own matches a lot sooner while the SHARKS float on the top like a rich Cream .... It's a system that automatically creates more consistent fairer Matchups without needing AI ranking/matchmaking_
You still run into the same issue that regular matchmaking has where pros inhabit the same space as noobs (in this case, a physical, level space) and are forced to interact, hence people complaining about dying instantly.

If anything, BRs are a lot more forgiving for noobs because there's so many other noobs for them to snack on before the sharks eat everybody. A noob can even take out a pro if they get lucky enough. Compare that to a fighting game where a noob gets matched against a pro and is powerless to stop the beat down. Occasionally dying quickly is simply the nature of a BR. That's why you can queue for a new match with little downtime.

I will admit that I'm not quite sure what the ratios of sharks-to-noobs are for the various BR's, as I've only played CoD (which feels like 15% great, 25% good, 60% scrubs) and Tetris (which feels like 1% pros, 19% good, 80% scrub). I remember seeing so many complaints online about people getting killed immediately back in the PUBG days, so maybe the ratio was out of wack, or the ttk was too low. I suppose a beginner would feel like they had more of a chance in a BR, and that they could easily write up a loss to a tactical error (eg. Awww, I shouldn't have landed in Depot!) as opposed to learning head on how shit you really are, like in fighting games.
It's nice to finally hear others expressing the opinion some of us have had for ages now: BR is cool and more developers need to try their hand at it, and anyone who hates it for being popular can shush.
An interesting thing about Tetris 99 is that everyone has the exact same seed for the piece randomisation, so it's not like you can say you had bad luck. You either have used what you've given not as well as someone else, or you got targetted at an unfortunate time that you couldn't handle. Finally I can now happily say that anything can be a battle royale; because for once some damn innovation is being put into this kind of battle royale! I realize that I'm giving praise to what is essentially a massive multiplayer game of Tetris, but at least it introduces something different into this genre that is going to flood the gaming industry! Thus proving that you can put some variety into this type of game and that it can have a format for anyone to enjoy. Even your parents/grandparents can now join in saying the phrase "I won a chicken dinner".

Your example woolie of a guy who lands in the outside vs a guy who lands in the center, in both cases the guy who lands on the outside is not going to fucking see any other players and the guy who lands in the center is also not going to fucking see any other players and they're going to scrounge around and hide so they they'll be ready to get the drop on anyone retarded enough to be the guy who lands further out and then presses shift and W toward the center, because getting the drop on people is how you win. I wish games like quake champions were actually alive, games where you start game and you go into fucking berserker mode pure offense all day and it's great and that's a viable winning strategy. Sure, you CAN play a BR game offensively, but by far the most effective strategy is to play like a bitch.
