Take a bow, Sam. These vlogs show the real beauty of Hong Kong and not the glossy artificial beauty kind. To meet up the unique locals from the neighborhood and share their stories takes the whole thing to a different level. Nice to know about Paul Au's story this time. Also I am pleasantly surprised to know that Japan Guide team still supporting you :)
Thank you Satish! There are so many cool people and places in this city it's a pleasure to get out there and see them. Paul is such a lovely character, it was amazing to talk to him. And yes, still have a great relationship with the japan-guide team :)
We enjoyed this video very much, another great work Sam., really like the part on Vinyl Hero, what Paul Au’s doing is sensational and we salute to him👏👍
I love how you explore and discover the beauty in the locals like Paul. I think he is sitting on a gold mine with all them vinyls. He can sell them on ebay pretty easily. Anyway you are showing peoples stories which locals themselves don't know about and areas locals even forgot about. I like how you educate us on the history of each area. My family who still lives there probably wouldn't know the history of Sham Shui Po, Wan Chai etc... Unfortunately I've left HK when I was 8 months old. I was raised as a Scot and then now as an Aussie. These traditions are fading with every generation.
Thank you as always! We love delving deep into local culture- it's probably our number one reason for doing what we do. The characters that we've been able to meet and interview over the past few years are so incredibly important to traditional HK culture, and it's an honour to have them talk to us! You have an interesting story, going from Hong Kong to Scotland to Australia. I hope you get to return and see HK again sometime soon!
@@HongKongHoods I'll love to take the family back to HK and Glasgow too and give them a taste of my history. I hope they tidy up Glasgow it was a dump in the 70's.
Randomly came across one of your videos last night (Happy Bakery one) and have been hooked since. I was born and lived in Hong Kong for a number of years before moving abroad so it’s really lovely to see different sights of Hong Kong and a variety of local food which bring back my childhood memories. Your videos are brilliant, interesting and informative. I also love learning about the background history. Could tell you have done quite a lot of research on your topics. Some of the facts you mentioned I didn’t even know about! Anyway thank you very much for creating this channel. Keep up the good work and I look forward to watching more of your videos 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you for watching and glad you’re enjoying our videos! Also really glad that they’re bringing back memories for you… we absolutely do a lot of research as we want to capture HK traditional culture beautifully and accurately before it disappears forever. Thanks again, welcome to the channel, and more vids coming very soon!
Another great video Sam. What I love are the segments that highlight the people that live the everyday hustle with their craft that is almost unique to the city. It’s great to see these areas showcased rather than the typical tourist spots with top production values to match. On a last note I’m sure you got a few whistles after your gua sha therapy 😂😙
Thank you for watching and for your kind feedback! I truly love wandering around these neighbourhoods and filming them and the people that live there... And there might have been whistles, but I couldn't hear them through the buzz of the market hehe
That’s great to know that nothing has fundamentally changed in that time. Thanks for watching and commenting, and I hope the video brought back memories!
Another great job Sam. I admire the amount of research and efforts you put into the video. I grew up in Hong Kong and live in the US now. I want to attest the places you selected to go are iconic. I hope you enjoy the Gua sha. As I mentioned in your last video, you spent time on the daily lives of the people as opposed to doing the easy thing of introducing the routine tourist spots. I can’t wait for part 2.
Thank you for the kind words. I find researching and filming these neighbourhoods incredibly interesting and rewarding, and it means a lot that those that grew up here appreciate and support the videos! Gua Sha was a very interesting experience and something I've never tried before! Thanks again, and part 2 coming soon! :)
Thanks for watching Sandy, and glad you liked the Paul Au segment. He's such a character and an important part of the 'hidden' culture in Sham Shui Po!
Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed it, I wonder how much Sham Shui Po has changed over the years- I wish I had a time machine! Part 2 coming soon :)
Just great video. You Sir should be the head of HK's Travel Development Department. BTW, the record guy speaks much better English than most HKers, regardless of accent.
Thanks as always, and also for the very, very kind words...let's see where the future leads hehe! Yes, Paul is such a local legend, very intelligent and thoughtful!
Just stumbled upon your videos and managed to watch almost all of them in a go. Guess what that means??? Need more, I believe 😜. Well, thats me just being selfish. Mate, they are brilliant. A cocktail of history, culture and lifestyle thrown in together with a side of food reviews. Perfect combination. I go HK every 2-3 years and next time definitely revisiting your footsteps to Kowloon City and maybe Dimsum place, time pending. Please, keep up the good work ✌️
Thank you Roshan for the very kind comment! Glad you enjoyed the videos, there’s a lot of research and time goes into them so it really means a lot when we get such great feedback as yours! More videos on the way soon!
Good job buddy!! Really impressed with how you went deep into the local (grassroot) places unlike other TH-camrs who would only show the fancy nancy side of HK! Sham Shui Po is such an overlooked/forgotten hood and it's hidden with lots of gems especially when it comes to local food!! As long as tourists stick with those restaurants/joints you recommended, it should be just fine.... 'cause I did hear there are some rough spots in the area with drug addicts and weirdos... not exactly suitable for kid-friendly hangouts!
Thanks for watching and for your great comments Raku Raku. It really was a pleasure to check out this 'hood and really get to know it during our time filming there. As you say, there are plenty of top-notch local gems when it comes to food, and there's just so much here in general for visitors to enjoy! Having said that, indeed, with it being among the city's most deprived areas, there are certain parts that are less ideal for tourists.
Of course Mark, got street food coming in part 2, to be released very shortly :). There are lots of good local craft beer breweries here in HK, will look into featuring some in upcoming episodes!
Another fantastic video! I love how you showcase not only the amazing city but the local characters within it. It's fascinating and entertaining. "Moving to Mars is bullshit." 🤣 (I totally agree.) But, oh man, you reminded me of a "therapeutic massage" I got while I was in HK. I cried the entire time! It was traumatic... but what you went through looked worse.
I think that may have been our favourite line of the episode too, Paul is certainly a great character and a lovely guy! Yes, the gua sha massage was certainly tough, as you'll know from your own "therapeautic massage" experience... just hope I didn't show the pain too much on my face hehehe!
Welcome to my hometown. I grew up here during my childhood and glad they still kept some of its primitive history. Paul Au can still kept his music if he wants to convert them into CDs because Laser Discs took up huge among of space.
Thank you for making this video, I really enjoyed your amazing content! I am moving to HK soon from Tokyo and I am glad to know Paul and that I can continue to collect records in HK :):)
Glad you enjoyed watching! Having lived in/near both cities, I can tell you that Hong Kong is incredible, and, although very different to Tokyo, I'm sure you'll enjoy living here. Thank you for the support, and hope you get to see Paul in person! :)
Woaaah that flea market! I'd love to go just there for a whole day and get lost. And although I currently eat on a plant based diet and Eggs and Meat don't catch me that much anymore, that egg sandwich there and your description almost made shiver hahaha. Well, outstanding camera, audio, cut and design work as usual, though if there would be anything that I HAD to criticize, I'd be that the A-roll of Paul talking was maybe a bit dark for my taste (face). So I'd give this just a 99,8%. Also, since the japan-guide videos I wondered whether you design the maps at the beginning of the videos with GIS or a photo editing software? Thanks for the content as always and stay safe Sam and cameraperson!
Thank you for watching James, and also for the great feedback! Glad you enjoyed the egg and beef sandwich clip despite maintaining your plant-based diet- it really was to die for (actually been back twice since for the same thing ;D ) Cheers also for the comments on the Paul section- will certainly bear this in mind going forward in similarly low-light conditions. As for the map, I drew the HK outline in Illustrator and then added the writing/animation in After Effects. Thanks again, and likewise stay safe :)
Gua sha was so painful bro. But once I had a bad flu one gua sha session heals it. It was like a miracle!! I believe in it just I don’t want to do it again lol
Yes, it killed me! Haha but that's incredible that it healed your flu- sure there has to be something in it if so many locals swear by it! No pain no gain!
@@HongKongHoods salute to your bravery for trying back scrapping! It can be painful so it's not the best therapy. Personally I like fire cupping (it's pain free, just a bit of suction feeling) - it does work to alleviate back and shoulder pain and drives away the very humid element/feeling in my body (Hong Kong is damn humid May - October).
Hi Juliana thanks for watching and great question! The gua sha was a great experience. It really does hurt though, so be prepared for some level of (satisfying) discomfort if you decide to go for it. I felt reinvigorated after it, but I didn't have any ailments at the time, so it was hard to determine whether it would heal anything.
