When you said you were interviewing residents at the top of the video, I certainly wasn't expecting a Japanese immigrant, let alone such a positive and upbeat one! Such a amazing young man. I hope we can all absorb a little bit of his positivity. In a similar vein, I wasn't expecting for such a diverse group of residents there. Monster Building carries on it's legacy as a first stop into HK for immigrants it seems. The refurbed shopping small in the basement looked like it was shot in a entirely different part of Hong Kong. Looked right at home in somewhere like Central or Admiralty. Lastly, loved your message at the end of the video. Too many get caught up in their pictures for social media and forget the impact such internet virality can have on a place
Lingmuk was great, such an upbeat person and a fantastic person to show us around the Monster Building and share about his life there. Thanks for watching James, and glad you enjoyed watching!
There are definitely issues with the building, afraid we can’t speak about it living up to safety standards though as we aren’t sure ourselves. HK is generally pretty good when it comes to health and safety though
Hong Kong is much more than all the usual glammed up photos and videos that the outsiders are used to see. Thank you Sam for covering the Monster building from the inside and clearing away any questions that we had about how people manage to live there. It took us by surprise to see the monster buliding having people from diverse backgrounds and totally unexpected to see a Japanese tenant and listen to his experiences. Even the mall underground was a surprise. As you rightly said that this building represents the soul of Hong Kong and hope it stays strong for many years to come.
Thanks as always Satish! We really tried to show the soul of the building here, rather than, as you pointed out, the glammed up image of Hong Kong. Thanks for the comment, and the support!
When i see videos like this it makes me feel so grateful that I live in a country with lots of room and space, not that many people, nature all around. This gives me anxiety…when that is said, interesting to see how it is to live there.
Fascinating place. When I see it from the outside it gives me some anxiety... I feel a fear that it might crumble or parts of it might not be stable. Once inside that feeling changes I suppose. It is tiny living as it exists all over the world, including urban areas of the US. Some make it feel as light and functional as possible, while others are a bit more ... casual. Thanks for giving us a look inside the Monster Building!
Hi Sam, totally random but saw you near Victoria Park today and regret not stopping you to say hi! Really big fan of your videos - as a Hong Konger myself (now settled in the U.K.) - I binged your videos before my visit this time and have found it super interesting, nostalgic and informative! The effort you put in your videos do not go unnoticed and I love the spots you choose to film from (esp the local ones and the interview!) keep up the good work! :)
Hi Noel, yes indeed, was walking around there at some point with my wife and daughter. It would have been nice to have met you, please do say hi if you see me again! Thanks for the really kind words, glad you're enjoying the channel- and more videos on the way!
This was beautifully filmed - and Lingmuk seemed so sweet - like sitting with a friend chatting about his new place. Newly subscribed and looking fwd to learning more about Hong Kong!
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, Lingmuk is a great guy, and gave us such a candid and informative interview! Thanks for watching - and for the kind words. More videos coming soon!
Very informative video. So interesting to see how other people live. Thanks, Sam, for revealing another part of the world to us. And thank you to Lingmuk for opening up his home to so many on TH-cam! 😊
Welcome back Sir.. absolutely another fabulous beautiful uploading.. gorgeous editing sharp and clear.. credit to you for your hard work and effort that you share, and I really appreciate it.. keep it Up, well done Sir.. have a wonderful blessing weekend to you and your lovely beautiful family.. take care stay safe.. TQSM from Mtl Cdn 🇨🇦
Thanks a lot Sam. I really love this kind of down-to-earth video. Every community has a different life routine. However, they also have the same essence: make use our God-given life to do good & spread kindness. Small, good things will create a big impact wherever you live.
Cleanly Cleaner's lol I love how you put this video together - the narrative and tone and shots and all. Esp. kudos to the cinematographer capturing so many tiny quirky details of the place.
Thanks for the kind words and glad you enjoyed it! It took a lot of work, but we’re proud of it and hope it gave an informative account of one of HKs most iconic buildings!
Hongkong monster building look horror my friend but after full watched your vidio so very I yeresting to know how the people living there Thanks for great sharing 💕💕
the monster building looks really cool!! i always love the huge shadow it creates on the main road whenever i go by. Appreciate all the research that went into this 😅and also the cinematography is outstanding! thanks Sam and team!!😂。this is a great one!!
I guess I am fortunate to have lived in slightly larger apartments when I was growing up in Hong Kong. Not spacious by any stretch of the imagination, but the conditions in which I grew up weren't quite as cramped as they clearly are in that building. With the high prices of real estate in Hong Kong, part of me is glad I don't live there anymore, even though I miss it very much. Thanks for the video, Sam.
Thanks for the comment! Yes, although apartments are generally small compared to homes in other let’s of the world, some being built these days are tiny! The Monster building ones are a bit of an exception I think, as most older building I’ve come across tend to have more spacious units!
Another interesting topic from Sam, thank you for informing us about the local living history of Hong Kong. Despite the busy life and living environment of this small city, Hong-Kong still has a close tiny community and warm neighbourhood feeling.....thanks Sam for digging deep to look into and let us FEEL the real life of people LIVING in Hong Kong ♥️.
Thanks! I’m a Hong Konger and it surprised myself that this Brit is actually showing me stuff that I wouldn’t otherwise know. So enjoy living in HK, and I look forward to coming back in the very near future. Cheers and thanks, mate.
Thanks for watching and glad you’re enjoying the channel, it really is my pleasure to explore the amazing culture in this city- I love loving here, and hope you get the chance to return soon!
Its nice to have these buildings as relics of the past but looking at the electrics there could easily be a fire. If they dont demolish it, they really need to spend a lot to make it a safe place to live.
While I agree that in some places it might look work is needed, in much of the building the electronics do fortunately look to be squared away safely. Certainly a valid concern though!
I have lived in this building for about 10 to 11 years my half childhood was spent here we also had a shop on the same building named lucky 21 trading co we had that store from almost 18 years it was a big experience for us we had such a good and friendly relationship with all the locals ❤ but because of the pandemic we left hong kong for 3 years and then now we came back but we live in a different area yuen long it is not good as quarry bay 😅 but no choise .😊 it was so good watching your video ❤
Thanks Malik, it sounds like you have good memories of the Monster Building. That's a shame you had to move away from QB, but hopefully you can still get back there and visit occasionally!
Hi Sam! Finally there’s a new one! I’ve already liked it before giving it a watch! I wish you could post it more often but I understand that it takes time to produce such an amazing and high quality video! So I’m not gonna rush you! Btw, has your t-shirt being “not soaked” ever occurred to you haha? Thank you for this one!
Thanks for watching and for the kind words of support- much appreciated! Yes, this one took a while, and we’ll have a break over the festive period, but next year we plan to get producing a little more often again! Haha whenever we film outside of December/January, I always have the “soaked T-shirt” look 💦 😆
Wow, never thought living in an urban prison could sound so appealing! Hopefully you could someday do a video exploring the mansions that the government officials live in there.
Wow, thanks for watching Jerome and for your incredible comment! I'd be happy to explore any mansions government officials live in if you can give me their phone number so I can connect with them?
Hi Sam, well after 3 long years we have finally made it back to Hong Kong. We have only been here 2 full days and have already visited a few of the places we have had on a list after watching your videos. We have been to the monster building, with a stop at the Danish bakery on the way home. Breakfast today was in Happy Valley at Cheung Hing coffee shop. Last night we rode the star ferry across to TST to watch the symphony of lights from a junk boat in the harbour. We had a very quick stroll through Chungking Mansion but Siobhan was slightly overwhelmed by characters trying to sell us their wares. (Maybe better for the daylight hours 😂). Still have a list of other recommendations of yours like 'vinyl hero' and the Mahjong tile maker at Jordan for the next 8 days of our trip. Thanks again for your great videos. We really enjoy both Hong Kong Hoods and Sam eats it. Marcus and Siobhán.
Hi Marcus and Siobhan! It's great news that you've finally been able to return here, hope you're both having a great time! That's awesome that you've been working your way around some of our recommendations, hope you've enjoyed them all. I love the Danish Bakery for a not-so-healthy bready snack on the go, and Cheung Hing is legendary! Haha, yes Chungking Mansions can be slightly unsettling at night, maybe you guys will have better luck in the daytime as you say. Paul Au at Vinyl Hero is brilliant, he's so welcoming and always has a story to tell. Hopefully you find some good records there, too (although the entrance may be a little hard to find - it's hidden behind a subway entrance if I'm not mistaken). As far as Uncle King at Biu King Mahjong, he's had a little trouble with his landlord recently and I'm not sure if he's still in that spot right now. The best bet would be to reach out to him on his Facebook messenger. His kids speak English and will direct you accordingly! facebook.com/BiuKeeMahjong/
Loved how you described the building as having a "soul". Another distinctly unique Hong Kong 'Hood to be treasured and visited for sure! Thanks, Sam...worth the wait and welcome back!
Great interviews and inside access to the residence, Sam. According to my Mom, the public housing boom in the early 60s was a crazy time, as thousands of locals and their families raced to join the queue to secure one of the prized, sought-after apartments. It was like winning the lottery for those who did.
Hong Kong at its best - loads of different nationalities - ages - all getting along and getting on with life - love it. Thanks, Sam, for reminding us what we can do well!
So happy to have found your channel. We live right next to the monster building so I pop over often either to get my Arabica fix or shop in the underground mini mall and wet market. I absolutely ADORE this neighbourhood. I'll be looking out for you when we're out and about in HK. 🎉
Welcome to the channel, and glad you’re enjoying it. We love that neighbourhood too- and the Arabica there is a nice bit of hip in an otherwise very down-to-earth setting ☕️ 😎 👌
Thanks a lot- I make the music for all the episodes myself. Have considered putting them on a platform altogether. Will notify the channel if/when I can get around to doing so!
This is one of my fave videos of yours sam! Keep up the great work, I will be back this year to do some filming too, need to capture it all before it's gone!
Thanks for watching and the kind words. Glad you enjoyed it... and yes, it's so important to document this type of traditional Hong Kong culture before it disappears forever!
Mr Evans, awesome clip & informative. Honest, it reminds me of the kwooloon walled city back then. I did visit the walled city when I was a kid in the 60s.
Wow, it looks very impressive. One question occurred to me: How do they deal with fires in such a large building? Is there a special system for this purpose?
I was there last week and the place is amazing, if you take the tramway from western market, causeway bay or any place to Quarry Bay yo can saw a espectacular image from the street side of the building! Thanks for the video now i know how is from inside!
Welcome back with this great vid. Ive also finally been back to HKG in okt/nov and miss it already. seen fam. friends and relatives and gained a few or more pounds :X
Glad you got the chance to come back here, and that's great you could catch up with family... and gain some pounds eating no-doubt delicious food! hehe
At 1:30 there is a herbal tea shop on the left hand side. I remember going to that place often when i was a child because it is pretty close to where i lived...can't believe it's still there after 40+ years! This shop helped me identify the exact place
it would be great if all residents could work together on holidays to fix lighting, clean up and repaint to make it fresher and more comfortable, of course more iconic
I live in rural Ontario Canada and a few years ago I visited Kowloon and Hong Kong. It was an amazing experience but not one I would like to repeat. The views and history are amazing but there are so many people!
Thanks for the suggestion! We covered the Walled City in our Kowloon Top 5 video that you can watch here: th-cam.com/video/8abORIePuTw/w-d-xo.html As far as a full-length deep dive into the complex, it could be an idea for a future video...
Planning my first time Hong Kong visit soon. Came across you tubes on Kowloon walled City, now this one on the monster building. North Americans need to be either shown these living spaces, or move in for a short time. We need a perspective of just how good we have it. Maybe North Americans would complain a little less of just how hard life is.
Actually I am not go to say the place is big. But he does has some space for a small bed, desk ect. Some of the apartmant in Hong Kong are called caged homes and the space is about the same size a sailor today gets on a ship.. Meaning a cot and a place to hang clothes for a few small items crammed in corners. The the tiny bathroom and kictchen is share with like 20 families. So this is nicer then some of the other places I have seen in Hong Kong.
People always think Hong Kong is a concrete hellscape with no nature, this building is next to a country park as you can see at 19:17 and from anywhere in the city you can be hiking into the mountains under 30 min. Only 25% of the land in Hong Kong is developed.
Another great vid, thanks to Sam and team! I don't mind tiny places, most people with bigger places own too much things they don't need anyway! A bit sad it has the nickname "monster" I feel it's a bit undeserved!
Thanks as always James! And agreed, there’s something to be said for loving small and owning less! Agreed that “Monster” isn’t the nicest name… but I guess it started being referred to as such around the time a lot of the “monster” movies were filmed here- its size is monstrous, too! 💪
Yeah no, even at its peak, this was NOT the most densely populated complex on Earth; The Kowloon Walled City was, and it ceased to exist 1993-1994 when it was demolished. There is no other place that has ever come anywhere close to it or anywhere on that scale. This place is more like a loose Kowloon Walled City: Reloaded if anything. Very similar, but legal and a little more sanitary with actual elevators. But from other videos I did see some back alleys that you could get lost in here, just not to the extent of the former Kowloon Walled City.
Kowloon Walled City was NOT an apartment complex; it was a titanic and largely unregulated hotchpotch of buildings that housed apartments and a variety of other things from dentists to factories. This represents a crucial difference, and is why we would never compare Kowloon Walled City to The Monster Building in terms of population density. To say that Kowloon Walled City was the most densely populated settlement on Earth is correct, but to say nothing came close is debatable - Gunkanjima, off the coast of Nagasaki in Japan (a tiny island the site of a coal mine with a population exceeding 5,000 before its abandonment in 1974) wasn't a million miles off.
If you haven't heard of the "Kowloon Walled City", demolished in the first half of the 1990s - do look for a video made by an Austrian guy who explored the interiors, it's on yt. That was a truly dystopian post-apocalyptic like building complex - neither governed by the Brits nor China.
Hi Sam, thank you for visiting my home monster building!!!! Quite informative video! So nice 👏
Thanks for showing us around and telling us about your life there Lingmuk, was a pleasure to meet you!
鈴木さん你英文咁勁嘅?😱
Can't believe your English is so good!

Thank you so much!!!
Lingmuk was great, such an upbeat person and a fantastic person to show us around the Monster Building and share about his life there. Thanks for watching James, and glad you enjoyed watching!
@Concerned Individual I don’t like drinking alcohol. And I’m very healthy based on body check lol
@Concerned Individual yes~ I’ve never been to hospital during this 3 year. I’m healthier than many people
But where is the interview of indigenous residents? Not another TH-camr?
My main concern is the electrical wiring, its a fire hazzard and when it happens no one can escape due to its congestion.
There are definitely issues with the building, afraid we can’t speak about it living up to safety standards though as we aren’t sure ourselves. HK is generally pretty good when it comes to health and safety though
Yes we care so much about standards here in the states that we rather have people homeless.
Hong Kong is much more than all the usual glammed up photos and videos that the outsiders are used to see. When i see videos like this it makes me feel so grateful that I live in a country with lots of room and space, not that many people, nature all around. This gives me anxiety…when that is said, interesting to see how it is to live there.
Thanks for watching. Some in HK live in really small places relatively speaking, but they generally make very good use of the space
I live in Smolpupper, warm, moist, creamy, fishy smell
Aqua Jewel, what country do you live in? Surely not the U.S.
You can't judge a whole country with just this place
Fascinating place. When I see it from the outside it gives me some anxiety... I feel a fear that it might crumble or parts of it might not be stable. Once inside that feeling changes I suppose. It is tiny living as it exists all over the world, including urban areas of the US. Some make it feel as light and functional as possible, while others are a bit more ... casual. Thanks for giving us a look inside the Monster Building!

Thanks for sharing that information John, that's very interesting. Wasn't aware just how prized the apartments were, but it defintely makes sense!
Very interesting video, and filmed in such a respectful and not patronising way. Thank you very much
Thanks for watching and for the kind words. We’re glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome video! Many thanks for showing us an extreme end of Hong Kong life.
Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it!

Great tour, thanks!
Thank you!
I truly enjoyed your video very informative, I always wondered about this building. You did such a great job covering this building 💜
Thanks for watching, and for the kind words- glad you enjoyed it and found the video informative! 🙏💪😊🇭🇰
Another great video Sam! Love the thoughts and effort put into this video! Love the filming also, look forward to seeing more😀

I did visit the walled city when I was a kid in the 60s.
Thanks as always for watching and glad you enjoyed it. Yes, there's definitely some similarities between Monster Building and Kowloon Walled City!
Great video....island space will always be a premium.
Thanks for watching and absolutely agree!
Wow, it looks very impressive. One question occurred to me: How do they deal with fires in such a large building? Is there a special system for this purpose?
That is an excellent question I don’t know the answer to. There are many stairwells in the building though!
This boy seems so nice in the video: so friendly and happy I would love to live here
Great guy! And yes, very much enjoying his life living there! Thanks for watching!
After watching this video...I'm feeling like I'm living a luxurious life...I'm so grateful for what I have...
Thanks for watching and glad it inspired some thought!
I was there last week and the place is amazing, if you take the tramway from western market, causeway bay or any place to Quarry Bay yo can saw a espectacular image from the street side of the building! Thanks for the video now i know how is from inside!
Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it!
very good content and a very emotional speech. Thank you!
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it!
Welcome back with this great vid. Ive also finally been back to HKG in okt/nov and miss it already. seen fam. friends and relatives and gained a few or more pounds :X
Glad you got the chance to come back here, and that's great you could catch up with family... and gain some pounds eating no-doubt delicious food! hehe
amazing content
Thank you!
youve got almost every angle possible captured of the 4 aunties playing mahjong except a drone shot 😄
Thanks for sharing. Very informative video.🥰
Thank you! 🙏💪
Your videos are so good! Other than your awesome skills, what camera produced these beautiful shots?
Thank you John! I use a Fujifilm XT4. Great camera I'd always recommend.
At 1:30 there is a herbal tea shop on the left hand side. I remember going to that place often when i was a child because it is pretty close to where i lived...can't believe it's still there after 40+ years! This shop helped me identify the exact place
Whoa, well spotted, and thanks for sharing! There are some very traditional establishments in this enclave of the city
it would be great if all residents could work together on holidays to fix lighting, clean up and repaint to make it fresher and more comfortable, of course more iconic
That's a really good idea. It could certainly help to make parts of the building look nicer!
love yr video! very informative and interesting
Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed it!
Very interesting, thank you 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
The legend returns!!
Cheers Nate, hope you’re well!
these shots look so well made. amazing
Thank you for the kind words!
Much appreciated that you respected the privacy of the residents out there.
Thank you, and thanks for watching… more videos coming soon!
Thank you ever so much, my world is one room also. Its cozy for me. THANKS!
Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed!
Fantastic video
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed!
Hello, bro, Permission to watch... Hong Kong is amazing, I like the video... Nice to meet you and always healthy greetings... Amen 🙏🙏💖
Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel! 🙏💪😊
Can anyone provide a link for that rubbish bin holder from under the sink with the plastic bag? I literally need one of those
That dustbin is so cool! Where do i get it from?
You could try Japan Home Centre (JHC)- although I can’t be sure! 👍 thanks for watching!
Simplicity of life is the contentment with great appreciation, to be thankful for
Thank you for watching! 🙏
I can’t help but wonder about what would happen in the case of a fire? Do they have a fire company in the building?
Thanks, interesting video, love Hong Kong 😁
Thanks for watching!
I live in rural Ontario Canada and a few years ago I visited Kowloon and Hong Kong. It was an amazing experience but not one I would like to repeat. The views and history are amazing but there are so many people!
Yeah, I bet it is a world away from rural Ontario! Would love to visit Canada some day 🇨🇦 thanks for watching!
hk has so much history.can you do video on KOWLOON WALL CITY and also all the british army camps that was here before 97.
Thanks for the suggestion! We covered the Walled City in our Kowloon Top 5 video that you can watch here: th-cam.com/video/8abORIePuTw/w-d-xo.html As far as a full-length deep dive into the complex, it could be an idea for a future video...
I would die from claustrophobia if I had to stay in an apartment that tiny for more than...minutes.
Haha it’s really not that bad once you’re in the room- quite possibly not as claustrophobia inducing as it feels in camera!
Sir you're a gift to Hong Kong and beyond. Thank you.
Thank you Bike! More videos on the way!
@@HongKongHoods It’s Steve😁I always recommend your videos to my friends and subscribers.
Thank you for sharing this is a great way to make accommodations with all the needs at same time quite affordable too
Thanks for watching! Agreed- cozy, but in many cases quite comfortable living here!
yes in deed I was homeless here in the USA and I would of loved this @@HongKongHoods
@@EsteeDarla Definitely better than being out on the streets! Hope your living situation is better now!
very true id been glad to have that rather then be homeless for sure@@HongKongHoods
nice work! thanks !
Thanks for watching!
Very good video
Thank you!
Thanks for watching and glad it helped you gain perspective if dense living in Asia!
Is so incredible the accomodation in small spaces, I had seen videos from Japan, Korea and China and this is so small and sometimes expensive 😢
True! Thanks for watching!
Very true, there is an issue with “cage homes” in HK in which people live in pretty unfavourable circumstances. Thanks for watching!
Man you were drenched! Can't imagine how humid it is there
The stuggle is real outside of Dec-March
People always think Hong Kong is a concrete hellscape with no nature, this building is next to a country park as you can see at 19:17 and from anywhere in the city you can be hiking into the mountains under 30 min. Only 25% of the land in Hong Kong is developed.
It’s true that Hong Kong has so much great nature. Thanks for watching
They are a struggle for many to live in due to how small thay are thou, they don actually choose very small , it's all they can get and afford
@@daweigo6851 It is the case for many Hongkongers unfortunately. Thanks for watching!
What a humble young man.
@lingmuk is an inspiring guy for sure. Check out his channel: youtube.com/@lingmuk
The actual cyberpunk city. I don't know why I keep imaging myself living like this is a far future.
I can’t think of anywhere more cyberpunk! Hopefully your predictions for yourself come true!
If you haven't heard of the "Kowloon Walled City", demolished in the first half of the 1990s - do look for a video made by an Austrian guy who explored the interiors, it's on yt. That was a truly dystopian post-apocalyptic like building complex - neither governed by the Brits nor China.
@@kenlee1416 We also covered it briefly in our Kowloon Top 5 episode. Watch it here: th-cam.com/video/8abORIePuTw/w-d-xo.html
Could you do a Christmas video in HK? 🎉🎉🎉🎉
It’s a great idea, but unfortunately won’t be able to this year as travelling elsewhere. Will keep it in mind for the future!
I've never seen inside it before. Interesting video.
Thanks for watching!
What is the size of a full-size, not subdivided unit? Thanks for the video.
It’s really hard to say without gaining access, but we think the second apartment we went into was subdivided in half, so double the size of that one.
Really interesting. Personally I'd use much more shelf space. There are a lot of blank walls.
That’s a great idea to steal space where you can! Thanks for watching!
Brilliant video! Are you from Manchester by any chance? I can’t grasp your accent 😂❤
Thanks for watching, and you’re spot on! I am indeed from Manchester!
Haha a fellow manc! Sending love from Old Trafford 😂
