Thank you for introducing Mr Yau, the Umbrella retailer in Sham Sui Po. When we are able to travel again (I am from Perth WA) I would definitely return to HK & bring along my sentimental umbrella for repair. I kept the umbrella for more than 30 years, looking for someone to fix it & now I found the man! Thanks Sam 😘. I appreciate his thoughts about landfill & waste 👍🏼. Keep up the great work Sam & looking forward to more episodes. Happy New Year 🐯🧨🧧
Your umbrella would be perfect for him to fix it seems Alice, let’s hope travel returns to HK sooner rather than later. Thanks for watching and for the kind words. Happy New Year to you too! 🇭🇰🧧🎉
I'm amazed by how you discovered so many hidden gems and stories in Hong Kong. This channel is so refreshing compared to other Hong Kong channels. As a Hongkonger, thank you for documenting these histories!!
Since discovering your channel, I have been binge watching your vlogs every night. I was born in Hong Kong but moved to the U.S. when I was young. Absolutely enjoy each and every episode. Your reaction when you eat is wonderful to watch. I like how you end each one with an interview.
Thanks for watching and your kind words of support. We’re really glad that you’re enjoying our videos and hope that they’re bringing back some memories from when you lived in HK. More videos coming soon!
Love the Umbrella uncle! The way he spoke, the tone, the voice, reminds me of my late grandfather. He passed away quite a few years ago at the age of 100. He escaped WW2 as a kid and travelled to Malaysia from Guangdong. I'm proud to say that I'll shake shake shake my umbrella before opening hahahaha! Now that HK has opened up fully, I'm thinking of planning a trip to HK again and will want to visit Sham Shui Po as I have not been to this area in all my previous trips. P.S. I'm from Singapore :D
Wow, thank you so much for sharing that, I'm glad Yau Yiu Wai reminds you of your grandfather. He seems to have had a long and very eventful life. I can't recommend Sham Shui Po enough, it is a fantastic area full of local culture! Thanks for watching!
@@HongKongHoods It definitely will be in part of my itinerary! Love your videos by the way. Great mix of a bit of the history/background, interesting interviews and great food.
This video presentation is so vivid that HK Tourists Association should use it to promote HK which is not only shopping paradise! The local lifestyle is incredibly interesting! Down to earth to present HK culture! Very particularly articulated the livelihood here
Thank you for watching and commenting. This series was one of the most rewarding to film, discovering the people who make Sham Shui Po what it is - a neighbourhood with unparalleled culture and a unique ethos within Hong Kong. I hope you similarly enjoy other deep dives we've one in the city. More videos on the way!
Amazing, so lively and interesting, a very good way to promote Hong Kong culture in its genuine character! I just love to listen again and again! Beautiful English and filming! For me it’s an eye opening journey to Shamshuipo!
Thank you so much for watching! It's my pleasure to explore these neighbourhoods and document the real places and people of Hong Kong. Sham Shui Po is such a fascinating place. Thank you for your kind words! :)
OMG....Im glad that I found this SSP video......My family used to live at corner of Pei Ho St and Lai Chi Kok Road (right across from Mr. Yau). I knew his father when he had the little misc store in the middle of Nam Cheong St (near Tai Nan St) over 50 years ago. My mother could not walk for long time, so she always asked Mr. Yau for a stool for her to rest for 5 mins before walking upstairs home. I will definitely visit Mr. Yau when I go back to HK in mid May. Thank you very much!!
Thanks so much for sharing that, Jane, that’s amazing that you knew him back then. He’s such a nice man, and it was great meeting him. We haven’t been to his shop for a few months but last time we did, he was still up to business as usual!
Very interesting 👍both the vinyl record guy and the umbrella guy are interesting characters, I like the mix of old and new recommendations and Sam really knows how to enjoy eating the rice noodle rolls👏
Thanks for watching and for the feedback, and glad you liked it! Definitely, both Paul Au and Yau Yiu Wai are great guys to talk to, and glad to hear you enjoyed the part on the cheung fun rice rolls! :)
We have been to Hong Kong and did the usual tourist stuff --- The Peak Tram, Star Ferry, Ocean Park, Stanley Market, etc. We certainly didn't visit a vinyl collector, or an umbrella repair person, or dine on street food. I suspected we missed a lot and your videos confirmed this. May be worth another trip (if only to dine on egg and corned beef sandwiches)! Great videos, professionally edited and produced (as expected).
Thanks for watching and for the great feedback. HK is an incredibly diverse city with so much (touristy and otherwise) to see, do and taste. I do love the well-travelled paths like the Peak Tram etc, but indeed there's a lot more here too. Maybe on your next visit you can get stuck into the street food here, definitely recommend the egg and beef sandwich! :)
Thank you Nikki, really appreciate you watching and your feedback.Yau Yiu Wai really was such a cool guy to meet, such a character, and very passionate about what he does! :)
It would be a crime not to appreciate this beautiful journey of Sham Shui Po. We are getting to see the true Hong Kong colors and not the usual glossy and artificial stuff which is good for tourists. For people like me who want to see a country from a local person's point of view, these are highly educating and informative. Yau Yiu Wai is yet another passionate Hong Konger who reflects the true HK spirit and hats off to his concern about recycling and to reduce wastefulness. On a lighter note, I wonder if Sam understands Cantonese or the subtitles are added later by his fellow videographer.
Thank you as always for your very kind feedback Satish, it really feels great to know that these videos are giving a good message and are providing inspiration! I certainly do urge you to visit and check out these places when travel is back up and running- I'm sure you'd love them! Yau Yiu Wai was indeed so passionate and dedicated to what he does- a great character with great values and a very inspiring person to talk to! Finally, good question- I certainly don't understand Cantonese fluently yet (although I am in the process of learning), so my lovely partner Vienne helps me a great deal with translations in these interviews! :)
Enjoyed the umbrella academy story. I respect and agree not be wasteful. Shameful that we live in materialistic and wasteful world rather than saving our 1 and only planet.
Glad you enjoyed it! Mr. Yau gives a strong message on preserving the environment, and he's so passionate about what he does. A true neighbourhood legend! :)
An interesting and meaningful program showing real talent in recycling, invention and repair. Good efforts in research and carrying out a meaningful message to all viewers. Great job !
Thank you very much for watching and for your feedback! :) It was once again a pleasure to be able to see the neighbourhood and meet the great people there. Yau Yiu Wai the umbrella man was such a character!

Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed it! The cheung fun was absolutely delicious, my first time to try it at this restaurant, but I'll be going back!
Been following your work since Japanguide.com. Love your narrations. Have been waiting for your unique views and contents about my hometown Hong Kong. Fantastic work so far! Some places are tough to film (ppl are always in a rush), but most ppl in HK are nice at heart. Keep it up :)
Thank you for the kind words and glad you're enjoying the episodes! Yes, Hong Kong is definitely a blink-and-you'll-miss it kind of place sometimes, so we feel really lucky to have been able to meet such fantastic people so far. More to come shortly :)
Really enjoyable videos! I've watched a number of the Japan guides as well. Truly informative and motivating. Would love to visit this part of the world one day. My wife and I passed through Japan years ago on the way to Australia and fell in love with the place and the people. Incidentally, do you speak both Japanese and Cantonese?
Thank you Dave, it means a lot to hear that these videos are enjoyable and inspiring. Yes, indeed Japan is also an incredible place, albeit in a very different way to Hong Kong. I would highly recommend visiting HK if you haven't done so already. My Japanese is (was) passable for everyday conversation, but my Cantonese is still very much in progress!
I was hoping he would get some delicacy snake soup in one of the snake shop at Nam Cheong Street. I missed those cheong fun(rice noodles rolls). And hope he'll take good care of that umbrella that he bought because they can hardly stay durable.
I know it seems I just repeat my comments over and over, but this again is a really interesting video with even more interesting people in it (besides you, Sam). I personally liked the umbrella guy best, he truly burns for his job. He basically IS his job. And again it wouldn't be me if I hadn't one little piece of critique, hehe. Maybe it's just me as well, but I personally didn't like the soundtrack too much, maybe it was too repetitive or a little too loud, I can't really tell. Maybe something slightly more uplifting than mysterious would've fitted well, too. However, as I already said, this is 1 of 100%. I really really enjoyed this two-parter. Stay safe and healthy!
Hey James, thank you so much for watching and for the feedback! Yau Yiu Wai was such a great guy to meet, extremely into what he does, it really is a way of life for him and he seems to get such joy from simply opening that shop up every morning! Thanks as always for the constructive criticism, it is appreciated very much. May I ask, regarding your soundtrack comment, did you mean the music in general, or the accompaniment for his interview in particular? :)
@@HongKongHoods Now that I re-listened to the soundtracks, what I meant was the song that also played around 13:10. I also noticed it's not really a big part of the video... opposite of what I thought when I wrote my first comment, oops! Probably just a matter of taste tho!
Thank you for these videos highlighting the crafts, foods and especially the people. It saddens me to know that artisans and masters like the mahjong king, the snake soup lady and this umbrella gentleman’s knowledge will die with them since the younger generation will definitely not be interested in learning their skills.
Agreed, it's tragic in a way that some of these incredible pieces of culture will probably disappear in the next decade or two. This is what drives us to represent them, promote them, and document them so they can live forever in some way, shape or form!
The world needs more people like the Record Guy and the Umbrella Man. And TH-cam needs more videos like this. 💚
