It is invigorating to see you in orchestrating these neighborhood treasures for the world to enjoy and more importantly, your documentary can be considered a living document for years to come! I was super sad to see you leave Japan guide, but so stoked to find out that you moved to HK to cover the beautiful culture there. Hong Kong will forever be part of my cultural identity even though I’ve lived most of my life in America, but I am so honored that you are literally recording the remnants of its great heritage because there is bound to be unforseeable changes in the coming years that will alter its unique identity and loss of traditions.

    I used to live in Hong Kong. Love how you are covering the neighborhoods by tying each neighborhood’s history to the present day. It’s very touching that you are doing personal interviews with some of the notable fixtures in the neighborhoods. It really brings the fabric of the neighborhoods alive. I watched your vlogs about Japan travel. Didn’t know that you moved to HK. Hope you enjoy living there. HK is a bit more gritty compared to Japan.

    End of its era for Au Yeung Cheong. I remember my cousin informed me a year back that kids in school now a day don't even know how to write with a pen since they're now in high tech world and probably not able to find calligraphy teaching there either.

    • @HongKongHoods
      @HongKongHoods  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed, it's a shame Au Yeung Cheong had to move, but thankfully his new place is close by. It would be such a shame to lose this art, I hope the younger generation continue to hold this part of the culture dear.

    This artist has the most beautiful caligraphy I have ever seen. The fact that he is self taught is even more remarkable. It is a damn shame that they are forcing him to leave. He won’t be able to afford the outrageous rents HK is known for. I hope he can pass his skills on to an apprentice, but I feel the younger generation doesn’t have the same appreciation for these arts. Thank you, Sam, for another video gem!

    I first went to HK as an 11 year old in 1979. I have roots there as many relatives escaping from Mao's China used it as a stopover before spreading out all over the world or staying there for good. My father escaped with my grandmother as he was being drafted into Mao's youth army. My grandfather was in Manila making a living and bought them a unit at one of the apartment buildings in North Point before joining him. We still own the place and my aunt still lives in the same unit with my cousins and I usually stay there when I visit. I have been back to HK since then many, many times and I can go around the main areas like a local. I consider HK to be the best city in Asia (next to Tokyo) for pop culture, clothes, and SPECIALLY, FOOD. My God. The food there is amazing. From the street to high end Michelin places. I have tried many of them. All good. But I still prefer mid level to street level food. To me, that is the soul of HK food. Not the fancy ones. I have not been there for years (too busy), but once the pandemic clears, I'm fucking buying tickets for me and family and will spend a couple weeks there to soak the place in again.

He later moved to a place a few hundred metres down the road but when we last check up on him he didn’t seem to be there anymore either! If we find out where he is now, we’ll give an update in the video description.

    Sam I really liked the documentary format of this episode, and hope you will do more of Hong Kong ’Hoods. It seems like every travel and food blogger out there is focused on mostly the food or the tourist traps like Central. North Point is a working class neighborhood and where my family stays when visiting relatives... I have uncles who still live in Siu Sai Wan (the east), Pok Fu Lam (west), and a friend on Lantau island.
