  • The Ibanez Premium S Series S1070PBZ in Black Burst 2024. What a Stunning Finish!!! Pity About The Very Poor Soft Case it Comes in! - See my Review on The Alternative Ibanez M300C Hard Shell Guitar Case - • UB:32 Ibanez M300C Har...
Ibanez Premium Guitars are made in Indonesia and this particular model sports a range of exotic build materials such as Poplar Burl, Walnut, Curly Maple, Panga-Panga, African Mahogany and Bubinga. And without doubt it’s a stunning looking guitar! For regular viewers of my guitar channel journey, this is one brand I certainly did not expect to be carrying into the studio, but all is revealed at the end of the video. Typical Ibanez fit and finish and the 11 piece ‘Wizard’ neck makes for easy fast playing styles. Pick-ups are the DiMarzio 'Air Norton' at the neck, a DiMarzio 'True Velvet' in the middle and at the bridge a DiMarzio 'Tone Zone' - which are all passive alnico types.
Other features include 24 Jumbo frets made of stainless steel with the “Premium” fret-edge treatment, with a 25.5 scale length. The neck is 43mm at the nut and the tuners are Gotoh MG-T locking machine heads. The tremolo is an Edge-Zero 2 with an adjustable locking tremolo arm, and spring tension adjustment is easily done via a thumb-wheel accessible at the back of the guitar. It's important to note for all who are unfamiliar with these tremolo units that there is a specific adjustment locking screw methodology required, for which I show a quick illustration. This is not an exhaustive review but should prove helpful for anyone thinking about one of these guitars... Enjoy!

I have a Prestige 97 bubinga top w lopro trem from fujigen factory japan and its a cut above Indo Korean and def china guitars. Its on par w US fenders jacksons and gibsons. Though Ive never played a $1500 Epiphone Greeny yet...

Hi che2335 - Many thanks for chipping in... much appreciated. I'm not an Ibanez guy so not familiar with the various models out there. I can't fault the overall fit and finish, definitely better than some Gibson's I own... ;-) The Trem does not hold tuning as well as I would have liked, but as a Strat guy... I can manage. As for the pick-ups, DiMarzio - not really my taste but have a place for some areas of my recording. The set-up was quite poor, should have been better. I did try a Jackson but it was not for me... regards: Stu

Excellent, well-reasoned review. I like this guitar a lot, but it's not my cup of tea because of the locking trem. Now, I think the Edge system is far superior to the Floyd Rose from whence it's licensed. A big improvement on the concept. And I've felt this way since Ibanez introduced the Edge system around 1987 and I got to try several models at the local neighborhood guitar shop in L.A. But it was around this time that I drifted from the locking trem concept in part because I was getting very busy gigging in L.A. and realized I could make do just fine with non-locking nuts, locking trems, and well-cut nuts like graphite or brass. I didn't want to deal with the hassle of a string change at band practice and I always brought a backup guitar to gigs in case I broke a string. But, amazingly enough, I stopped breaking strings as soon as I ditched the locking trems and left my ESP and Kramer at home. Back to the guitar at hand in the review. I remember trying out a Sabre, as they called them in those days, and being very impressed with the sleek design, the thinness of the body. I also liked the RG. The Jems were more of a novelty as they were never my kind of guitar, even in my shredstick days. Why would I want a monkey grip? I absolutely love the pickup array on the S model in this video. The Tone Zone has been one of my go-to pickups since it came out in '91. I also love the Air Norton in the neck and the True Velvel middle single coil gives a lot of great tonal options. It helps a modern guitar like this still sound earthy. I am not crazy about the Vai Evolution pickups. Way too modern and cold for my taste. Nor do I care for actives. I think this guitar would be perfect if it had a good non-locking trem and 22 instead of 24 frets as I'd rather bend to reach the final octave and 24 fret guitars have always felt cramped to me. Aesthetically, I love the look of the guitar. The flamed maple top is very classy. This is a good guitar if you want the widest possible range of tones for the widest range of styles.

Hi Angusorvid8840 - Many thanks for chipping in and sharing some of the experiences you have with these type of guitars - I am out of my depth with these type of guitars. The first time I saw a Floyd Rose was only about 4 years ago and I had to look very closely cause I had no idea what I was looking at, and as for cutting bits off your stings to re-string them... who on earth came up with that idea... ;-) I have to admit, I'm a real di-hard old Fender guy and not too keen on Super-Strat type pick-ups, although I did have an old SG back in the 70s where I put a Di-Marzio super distortion in it to get more sustain - those were the days. As you say, this new 1070 is lovely to look at, typical Ibanez quality to play. I have just finished prepping a 60s Les Paul Junior (P90s) Double-Cut TV Yellow for next video - now that's a guitar ;-) . Regards: Stu

Hi Amin... I take it you liked the look of that guitar.... ;-) What was my favourite year from the 2010 onward? mmm... that's a difficult question. A few highlights I suppose... after years of research and hard work we completed a TV documentary along with a Feature Film, both distributed around the world in that time. Around 2018 one of our editors came into the studio with an electric guitar and a little amplifier - and not long later.... I'm playing guitar again... what was your favourite year? and why? Have a great weekend Amin and take care of yourself, Regards: Stu

I really like the S premium and S prestige models. Those models were my dream guitar back when I was still wanting to be in a metal band. I simply love the fretboard action, it feels like I can fly. My only complaint is the neck...I really like the feel of a Strat or Tele neck though. Agreed, it is heavier than it looks. Also I like the color schemes it comes in. I am thinking about a new guitar when I go back home, and this is one of guitars I am debating. If you are curious, here’s a short of the guitars I am debating:
    1) Fender Strat AU
    2) Ibanez S series prestige/premium
    3) Jaskson Pro Plus (or American Series - but I don’t like the colors. And colors matter 😉)
    4) ESP Horizon II or M-II
I do have a confession. I have tried to like playing Les Pauls, and they’ve just never felt comfortable to me. Strange, I know. I want to like them sometimes, just so I fit in with other guitarists 😉 I imagine, I will probably go with the Strat AU, because I like the neck and the feel when I bend the strings.
I am also looking at acoustics again too. But I am not really debating much on that. I have been thinking about Taylor’s 700 series for some time. (esp. 714 models, but others are great too)
Thanks for sharing your review. You picked one of my favorites 😊

Hi Jasper, good to hear from you and I will reply to your private message in a day or two once I have cleared my feet, been a busy few weeks of late. Yes the S series is very nice to play but I do agree that Fender necks just feel a bit more natural - especially the relic models.. ;-) Certainly it's a buyers market and there is so much product out there, do take your time choosing because I have a feeling that market is going to continue to swell. From your choices, your definitely showing your 'shredder' leanings... ;-) I agree with your sentiments in regard to LPs... I also have wanted to gel with them and the closest I've got to any kind of bonding is with the LP Special Double-Cut (P-90s) in TV Yellow I did a recent review on. In regard to the world of acoustics... there are so many good ones to choose from and I find it more difficult trying out acoustics than I do solid body electrics. Some folks don't get on with the Expression System in the Taylors but I really like it... it just cuts in a busy mix so well. Take care dear friend and I'll catch up with you in due course... best regards: Stu

@@jasperMT516 That's really special... A couple of young kids at church are asking me to teach them guitar, they love to get a hold of an old acoustic I have and strum away on it. I own the Strat American Ultra HSS and it’s a completely different breed to the Ibanez S range or the more metal-oriented guitars you have mentioned.
I absolutely love the neck of the Ultra and it is one hell of a great guitar but it won’t give you the tight high-gain tones you can get with the Ibanez S1070 and the Dimarzio pickups. If you’re torn between those guitars it’s worth making a trip to a large guitar shop to try a few.

@@pepeowen Thanks for chipping in Pepe - The Ultra is a nice guitar, I did think about getting one when I came back to playing but decided to stay with the original design and bought the Professional (Series 1). Always good advice to get along to a shop and give a selection of guitars a try-out. Regards: Stu
