I've had my 01 since 07 and it has been rock solid only things I've done are consumables per SE like tire brake pads, chain sprockets and rear carrier bearings when I put a wider axl because my someone bent own one. It has hot cam, big gun head pipe, Dyno jet kit, R4 slip on, -1 link on front +2 on back, 18s & 20s and a K&N with air box mods and it flat out hauls the mail... Mega neck breaking snappiness, total wheelie machine having few mild mods and geared down with sprockets n tires but it tops out at around 60mph but who cares unless you're road riding I'll make that sacrifice for Tq
I have had several of them. How well the bike was maintained makes a huge difference. I bought one new in 2003 and drove it as hard as possible being I was a teenager. It lasted years before blowing. Currently have a 2002 that I built back in 2013. It's a 719 stroker that has been rode hard and put away wet. It is still running strong and will ride all day. Every other raptor I owned was poorly maintained by previous owners and were constant problems. Once you go thru it once and use quality parts, it will be a good unit.
The billet flame parts are aftermarket.. I'm pretty sure the cover for the filter is just a cover, to pretty it up. So make sure you get that billet part
That reverse issue is very common on yamahas of that year range, even on the big bears, wolverines I've seen it on alot of them. Usually just the cable needs replaced or at least lubed up
I always wanted one of these as a kid, as an adult I bought one with a big bore kit already installed and honestly I enjoyed my built 400ex more than I did the raptor
For it wanting to go in reverse I found that on the 660 raptor had the same problem but the cable and previous been tightened between the frame and skid plate and their was tension pulling on it may be your problem just a suggestion
