2:00 I think the minute Odin calls Atreus the key to peace, Kratos snaps because it's a callback to Pandora being the key to killing Zeus. The insinuation is that Atreus may die in his quest to help Odin like Pandora did.
Except Pandora sacrificed herself or at least attempted to until Kratos caught her. Zeus then brought up Kratos' past failures including his family, causing him to lose control, let go of Pandora and attack Zeus.
@@Troop3r666 i guess factoring that in, Kratos hates the very notion of someone being worth nothing more than a pawn in the chess game of fate. And the fact in this case its his own son, one of the last remnants of his family is the one being called a key just makes it worse
The pandora storyline was really the most twisted part of GOWIII. Pandora is NOT a child, because the point of children is they grow up eventually. Pandora was created the age she is, and will stay like that forever. She just has a charming, innocent personality. And Kratos is so broken he extends no thought whatsoever to the actual flesh and blood humans screaming and dying around him, but feels deeply for the child-shaped doll who can never change. Hes really turned himself inside out.
@@Jampolo_OG Set vs kratos would be epic. Though I have a feeling its Atreus who will travel to Egypt since Kratos would be busy rebuilding the nine realm

@@LET4M4RU he doesn’t really want war because he is scared of kratos but if he had the chance he would kill him I mean he already wasted 2 grandchildren and his son at the task
Mimir just casually boosted Kratos' self-esteem after Odin left. He's the embodiment of that one friend that's always by your side regardless the situation.
It's so interesting to see how many angles Odin attempts to manipulate Kratos with. He fails to bribe him, play his ego, enrage him, scare him, or crush his confidence. He can't even physically intimidate Kratos because he probably can't kill him 1 on 1. The only leverage he has is Loki. It is SO satisfying to see an oppressive, lying tyrant fail to bully someone.

1:31 - I love how, as Odin says how he wants peace with Kratos, the camera is panning towards spears behind him, implying his actual intentions with Kratos. And when Mimir actually states that he is lying, Odin takes blacksmith tongs and approaches Mimir as if he is deep down pissed at him for snitching on him and wants to torture Mimir once again. It's these artistic details that make the entire dialogue so good and complete.
@@immortalweapon And when he said Atreus could break free of fate and prophecy, he threw the tong away, indicating that Atreus' usefulness is over by then. I love this scene so much
"Has anyone ever prayed to you?" First, Kratos took the place of a much maligned god of war, to the point that Spartans brought down statues of Ares with glee. Second, he was considered a father to his people. Third, when Zeus attacked Sparta, people PRAYED to him so that he could save them from Mr. Hey, You, Get Off My Cloud. For being so aware of Kratos' reputation, Odin is an awful liar.
...He's feeding into Kratos' self doubt. Kratos feels like he's failed his people. Odin is feeding into that. Odin knows more about Kratos than he lets on. He knows exactly what he's saying, and he's not an awful liar. He's an excellent one, telling it when Kratos doesn't want to hear it.
@@Supperdude9 he's a good manipulator but an awful liar. He's always lying or telling half-truths---that makes it easy to know not to believe a single syllable out of him.

One thing I loved about this scene is that Kratos is a very different person, but isn't afraid to revert back if it is needed. He is no longer the same hateful, vengeful person he once was, but he is willing to bring it back if it means his son gets to live. Watching him grow from the god killer he once was and back to a caring father, it would feel far more terrifying if he ever reverted back to his old self, especially with his mastered rage.
@@maximillian875 I WAS kind of hoping we'd get Kratos going full Ghost of Sparta for a bit. I figured they'd have Atreus seemingly get "killed" and have Kratos go apeshit. I wanted to see the Norse gods fear him, realizing that they should have never pushed him so far, before Atreus reappears and calms him down, much like Kratos calmed Atreus down when he turned into a bear to attack Freya. Eh, maybe the next game in the series. I did kinda especially want Freya to get a glimpse of exactly how terrifying Kratos could be, because that'd make for a lot of interesting dialogue afterwards. And Atreus as well. Kratos doesn't get THAT detailed about what he did in Greece, either, so it'd be interesting to hear more stories and see their reactions to stories about him. Tyr mentions he knows his name (the real Tyr you find in the epilogue content), but nothing has come of that yet...
2 times he was almost there. 1. The end of the 1st thor fight, before thor skedaddles, kratos goes more white and is breathing heavy. 2. When he was bashing Heimdall's face in.

@@jornavyr2459 In god of war 2 he was wtf are you talking about the throne was his reward basically even though he wanted the memories of his wife and child gone but he took the throne anyway
I love the final dialogue between Odin and Kratos. When it becomes clear to the All-Father that this former Greek God won't fall for any of Odin's tricks, he starts to lose control of himself, trying to verbally tear into Kratos by citing his stoic and steadfastness as proof of how little he cares for mortal life, but Kratos holds his ground and doesn't talk back. He simply looks at him as a soldier holding the line, proving his discipline over himself greater than the King of Asgard.
In Marvel Fear Itself ( Even if Marvel Versions are Modern Day Versions and Different than Myth Versions) Thor Cares More For Mortals than Odin and In that Event they even Fight each Other at some Point.

@@MajinBuusni Thats a Parallel Between Marvel Odin and Gow Odin. Both dont care for mortals as Much as Thor does( Myth Thor cares for mortals which is weird that Gow Version doesnt Show this Trait)
Odin may be a monster, but damn is he a good manipulator. The soft voice, the gentle demeanor, appealing to Kratos desire for peace, trying to form a connection with Kratos through Atreus, apologizing after taking a jab at Kratos, and finally appealing to Kratos’ wish to be a better person. This is some top tier manipulation.
Not really. He's far too shifty, nervous, passive-aggressive, insulting. He doesn't really achieve anything by this apart from a not great attempt to get in Kratos' head, all in the presence of a former employee he once tied to a tree. A real master manipulator wouldn't be in this situation to begin with. Odin is not consistent- on some occasions (fake Tyr) he's oustanding and you don't see him coming; on others (with other Asgardians) he's blunt and rude and belittling and it's only because they're all equally insecure and flawed that none of the Aesir hadn't smashed his head in with a rock centuries ago, with his manipulation of Atreus being somewhere in-between (the fact that he needs Atreus for translation and nothing else despite ages of research says it all really). Odin is probably being totally sincere here when he says he wants peace- he's just his own worst enemy and can't help pissing people off or blaming everyone for minor failures, and he rules by pitting people more powerful than himself against each other and breaking down their egos with years and years of psychological abuse. He's not charismatic and he doesn't have much of a master plan; he is good at "getting" people on his side but very bad at "keeping" them there. Everything in Asgard falls apart precisely because all of his petty manipulations fail and come crashing down around him and he didn't have anything else to offer
If he was a good manipulator with top tier manipulation you wouldn't spot his BS until you've dug your way down into a pit and started drowning in it, you can smell his BS as it leaves his mouth.
@@jonathancampbell5231 he is incapable of being sincere. just cause he could get peace now, doesn't mean he wouldn't do something later to prevent kratos from being a threat to him.. through whatever way he needs to. Flattery, murder, or magic.

One of the things that surprised me most in this game was the portrayal of Odin, but it is absolutely genius. As another comment here says: Master manipulator. A true psycho who can put up a friendly and approachable front but really cares about nothing and nobody else but himself, not even his own family, and will stop at nothing to achieve his own goals.
Yeah he was a great movie/cut scene villain, game wise? Not so much really didn’t do anything to slow us down and add to actually playing a game sadly , other than nidhogg but that was tailored for freya not kratos and ragnarok
Ironically mortals have more freedom than the gods in this world it seems… cos the Gods are born with a prophecy about what they’re destined to do with their lives.. while humans can choose.
"You don't care about mortals. You don't care about anything beyond yourself, beyond the monster who kills without cause. You fear what you can never even hope to understand." Odin, if you were projecting any harder, you'd be a movie theater.
I mean that's his manipulating strategy. Earlier in the game, the manipulation strategies had no effect on kratos, but by this time he found out what the weak spots: atreus hating him, and his self perception as a monster, his memory being one of a destroyer. Best part is, Odin indeed doesn't care about that type of godhood, but he figures kratos does
I love the way Odin was handled in this game. We know how evil he is. But when Atreus goes to Asgard, the front he puts on is so convincing, I found myself starting to question if Odin was just misunderstood the whole time. I had to keep reminding myself of all the awful things he's done. That's some good writing.
I was so taken aback by Saprano’s side character Odin that I couldn’t really take him seriously at first. But he got better and better every time he was on screen.
That “I know” from kratos is probably the softest he’s ever spoken and it was so perfect. The amount of trust and love between mimir and kratos in this game was amazing

1:13 I love how everything Odin does isn't without a plan, start a friendly conversation, get close to the spear. Possibly if touched, would have disenchanted the weapon itself, or apply something for later usage. Everything about odin is a weapon, and he uses it so masterfully.
That’s… actually pretty damn good suspicion. Good observation. While I personally doubt Odin would actually be able to tamper with the divine nature of the Spear that was forged literally using the God of War (Kratos’)‘s blood, making Kratos its true and only master, it is definitely something Odin would try and do. Given his many times demonstrated tactics of manipulation to lower one’s guard, and exploit any weaknesses possible
I love Odin’s, “Do they not have metaphor in your homeland?” The irony. Because yes, they did have metaphors in Greece. The word and concept are derived from Greek… μεταφορά (metaphorá) literally means "transference (of ownership)" which is why it’s used to refer to one thing by mentioning another. The story, dialogue, and character development in this game are truly outstanding,
And the answer is no, they did not have, "Greece" didnt exist yet, spartans were known to be a very direct and "few words" people, they were direct and small talk, Just like kratos, the old kratos (Greece mythology) was "wrong" since you can see he speaks a lot, the same for the Last spartan.
@Teyrn Cousland a spartan general sent a message back to the Gerousia, the council which ruled under the kings. It said "city taken". They fined him for excessive wording. They said "taken" would have sufficed.
@@sergioplazat3995 Kratos: The King Of The Gods killed them, so I return him the ultimate price "Death" wish is what I'm going to do to you if you keep this up.
2:25 This exchange here I think is the first time in a LONG time or ever, Odin has been confronted with someone who has been able to see through the silver tongue while also having the strength, power, and credibility to back up the threats. Odin knows how strong Kratos is and that if Kratos went all out and Odin wasn't in a prime situation he would lose. You can see very briefly after Kratos' statement Odin sways back but doesn't fully step back. Odin is rattled but knows enough manipulation to be aware of his body language. It's also the only time I think that Odin's speech pattern really changes, usually everything he says flows, even if he has pauses in it but in response to Kratos here it seems like a lump forms in his throat that he has to swallow down before returning back to his usual self.
You also have to add as well that Kratos is pretty much the embodiment of Odin's worst nightmares. Like, you learn of a prophecy that Ragnarok is coming, your death is imminent, and the God of war will lead the opposing army against you. Ok, we lock away Tyr, kill off all the giants, and murder any and all opposition. Mission accomplished, time to sip a cocktail. Then here comes this foreign God of war who has done the very thing you're terrified of: murder an entire pantheon single handedly. A God killer. Someone who is far worse than the Tyr you just locked away. Fimbulwinter comes to confirm those fears. Members of your family are getting killed one by one (some previously thought to be unkillable). And your attempts to kill, reason, or manipulate him all failed.
@@Zythus07 Also Odin knows Kratos' story and knows he dealing with a man who defied DEATH, the one thing Odin absolutely is afraid of, to the point that he treated the gates of the Underworld like a revolving door. As clever as Odin is, he knows he cannot match the sheer Willpower that Kratos wields.
Good read. Odin has no tools for Kratos and everything he tries only seems to make it worse. Kratos really is the worst kind of wild card to someone like Odin who's trying to avoid Ragnarok. All he had to do was *not fuck with Kratos.* That's all. It's amazing how determinedly he fucked this up.
@@Zythus07And even more than that, Kratos is a living example of the type of prophecy Odin is scared of coming true. Zeus was told Olympus would fall to the “marked one”, so Zeus had Ares go out and capture Kratos’ brother, as he had those unique red birthmarks all over his body. Then, as you put, mission accomplished! Time to sit back and relax. Except now Kratos, in honor of his brother, has painted himself to mirror his brothers birthmarks, incidentally now making him a “marked one”. Thus Kratos ends up being the one to fulfill the prophecy. Whoops, didn’t see that coming.
It’s incredible that Odin is so charming in this game. The actor does a stunning performance, and that’s what I love about it. I feel like so many series have a character or an antagonist that people say “don’t be charmed by him! Be careful!” And then you meet the character and they’re just a sad, wet sack of a person. But Odin genuinely seems like that most of the time he is like a swindling uncle that you somehow like despite the fact he’d abandon you at the drop of a hat. This game playing around with these familiar characters and giving them a new perspective is truly fantastic to see.
Richard Schiff is an absolute master. It's funny, because a lot of Odin's mannerisms and vocal ticks remind me so much of Toby Zeigler from The West Wing, but like, as a mask, not his actual deeper personality. He's just a funny little man with a silly hat to start with. And the way he pretends to turn around the wrong way when Heimdal moves to his blind side, or when Thor sneaks up on him! He presents himself so disarmingly.
He's got that "sleazy car salesman/business-person" charm, like he will lie and cheat you out of your money in any way possible and do it with a friendly voice and a smile on his face.
@@Summersong2262Perfectly put. His mannerisms and his way of speaking are less what you would expect of a god and much more of a corrupt politician. Or a sleazy used car salesman.
My favorite part of this is that Odin says that Kratos does not care what happens to mortals, when his entire quest originated from wanting revenge for what the gods did to him as a mortal man.
Also his servitude saved the mortals and everything in creation. When Persephone went insane and colluded with Morpheus, Kratos cleaned up the mess when no one else did. Everything Kratos did serves as a stark reminder that the gods have no right to be arrogant
I like this take on Odin. He's far from the ruthless maniac that he was made out to be in the previous game. He feels more like a once powerful old king, whose confidence has been replaced with arrogance. Odin talks a big game, but everything in his voice, and in his body language makes it clear that he hardly believes a word of it.
Given how he killed Brok right after he exposed him and then killed Thor right after he stopped obeying him, he's every bit the ruthless maniac he was told he was. He just tries to cover it up as doing things "for the greater good".
@@tinyanlee672 not only that, but Thor was heavily injured by Kratos, i wouldn't say he could have beaten Odin, since it took Kratos, Atraus and Freya in order to defeat him, but damn, the fight would be magnificent
I love the progression in this conversation. At first Odin presents himself as unthreatening as possible and speaks about peace, making a few digs but always immediately softening them up or even apologizing. Kratos shows however that Odin’s manipulation isn’t going to work: showing no fear, no hesitation, and even credibly threatening Odin. Odin immediately recognizes he is being backed into a corner and loses his composure a bit, trying to insult Kratos by stating he is still exactly as he was in Greece before immediately leaving, probably because he just realised he has just made even more of an enemy of Kratos, again showing he doesn’t understand who Kratos is now: someone who will only fight when he absolutely must.
@@Makura-MorningStar Gladly. Kratos fucked dozens of woman at once in Spartan brothels. As well as several woman during his time as a servant of the gods and as the god of war. They're in sex minigames in every title up to God of War Ascension.
I recently learned about something called “laconic” and it was a form of speech that was clear and concise (to the point) and that Spartans actually spoke like that and the game nails that perfectly with how kratos speaks and interacts. Notice when Odin starts to babble (about the spear) and kratos just pretty much says get to the point.
There are many famous and short quotes from Sparta. One I fondly recall was received by Alexander the Great's father, King Philipp of Macedonia. He sent a long message to the Spartans, explaining how, if he defeated them, he would wipe them out and Sparta would be no more. Paraphrasing. And the Spartans just replied: If Yeah, they nailed that laconic attitude with Kratos. Use less words, speak only what is necessary.
I love how Odin is probably used to his slick words having an effect on everyone he talks to, but Kratos is just like, “Shut up and give me my son back.” He is not one for playing games, and it clearly made Odin nervous. :)
They prayed before that too. God of War 2's opening shows them praying to Kratos. Ghost of Sparta shows the kind of respect he induced. And the Last Spartan also was statisfied in death because it was his god he died to. Kratos was prayed to.
I love that Durlin says "Arguable." In response to Odin claiming he has a lot to live for. Pretty much saying "Forget me just murder this son of a bitch."

When Odin went on about godhood its actually a perfect reflection of himself a man who doesnt care for anyone beyond himself and man who doesn't care for mortals kills without cause because he fears what he could never understand its truly amazing character writing for Odin his character is great
It was a really nice touch too because Heimdall even said gods didn't need to posh up in a mansion yet has the best quality house in the entire settlement.
Odin actually cares but the same way as us care about ants and insects. In his point of view that's good enough as a god. He more obsesses with creating his version of the world and finding the truth.
Can we appreciate Kratos' self-control and discipline of not pulling weapons on Odin during the whole dialogue? When he appears and startle him, sure. But when he opens the discourse with veiled threats against his son? Kratos keeps calm, removes his spear. Odin insults his temper, belittle his own land, under the trollish guise of "kidding"? Kratos is not seething any ounce more than he already was. Odin belittle his godhood, brings up Kratos' past shames and failures, call him a monster? This gotta hit home, but Kratos barely flinches. Odin twists the knife in his current wound, his falling out with his son? Imply he's a failure as a father? Many heroes less temperamental than him would have already pulled their weapons or outright attacked, but Kratos does. Not. Move. And Odin loses. His insults ring hollow, because Kratos' actions don't match Odin's description of him. And if his insults are hollow, then his threats ring false as well, and Kratos comes out as the better man. It also help that Kratos' only threat can also be seen as a final warning.
"Have you imagined that kind of love?" Well Sparta, his first wife, his daughter, Orkos, his mother, Athena at first, Zeus at the beginning (at least if you squint hard), his brother when he was a kid and after Kratos saved him as an adult and Pandora certainly think that yes, he was loved

Looking at it one way this scene actually hints of Tyr being Odin in disguise ,cause notice Odin specifically states "Never cared much for Brok but can't deny the Dwarf's talent", he clearly highlights the fact that he knew it was Brok's idea to forge to spear to begin with or else he would've casually said "Brok and Sindri" or the Huldra Brothers as a whole but he particularly said Brok cause he was there when Brok suggested the idea for the Spear.

One of my favorite moments in the game. “Return my son, or you will meet the god I once was.” Man, those words. I couldn’t imagine Kratos violently giving Odin a brutal death.
It wouldnt be a brutal death it would be Marvel's Ragnarok with Kratos going and doing Sutur's job and tearing Asgard to pieces and then making odin a raven shaped artwork
Tbf I liked GOW:R ending, but I wouldn't be mad to see a good old brutalize scene like the Greek era. This dude was even worse than Zeus in every way and deserved to be reduced to Æsir Lasagna
When Odin is speaking about how Kratos doesn’t care about anything beyond himself, and the monster that kills, he doesn’t realize he’s not talking about the current Kratos, but himself.
Odin was doing the same thing the greek pantheon did: throw empty insults in hope that it would at least hurt Kratos. In reality, it just sealed their fate
The subtle details in this game are amazing. The way Odin insults Thor and gets right in his face when he does so but here, when he's trying to undermine Kratos, he keeps a small distance fully knowing that he has no control over him.
I think this is the best looking cutscene ever. The lighting, the environment, the character expressions and the quality of the models. It looks real to me. Bravo
That scene established Odin as one of my favorite antagonists in video game history. Beautifully written and perfectly executed by both actors. Amazing scene all around
You know what I find fascinating? Kratos has always been incredibly smart. Not a lot of people think about it. But take in a few things. He has cannocially went through several adventures where he must solve long term puzzles in realms and places made and/or overlooked by the gods. Gameplay wise they need to be solvable by us mortals but lore wise these are places and puzzles that no normal mortal should be able to figure out. Countless have tried and have either died or gone insane. Kratos became a spartan army general in records time meaning he must have incredible leaderships skills and intellect especially by Spartan standards. He has mastered the use of godly gifts and items and weapons in a matter of hours. Overcame and out smarted gods who have lived for millions of years. Frankly if Kratos really applied himself I have no doubt in my mind that he'd be able to rival the wisdom and knowledge of both Odin and Mimir. It's just that by the time of GOW4 he's a pragmatist who doesn't do anything unless it directly benefits him. Odin and Kratos are closer in intelligence and power than anyone would think. They are both incredibly adaptable and can think outside the box. They can learn and figure out things at record speeds. The difference between them is as simple as a paladin vs a cleric. Both very similar but having took different directions. If Kratos chose to research the nine realms I have no doubt he'd be as successful as Odin if not more so. Yet I bet Odin is unable to recognize this as Kratos does not present himself as someone of high intelligence like himself but as a stoic soldier ready for battle.
Indeed! When Kratos says,"my son is not your key."- Odin does not notice that Kratos was actually being metaphorical aswell, due to the fact that Kratos knew very well that Odin was a compulsive, manipulative liar
Greece was also known for logic and diplomacy. People often mislabeled the Spartans as brutish oafs and idiots compared to their Athenian counterparts. I’m reality the Spartans and Athenians were simply two subsets of the Greeks as a whole (Government and Military respectively). So yeah Kratos was brilliant at battle and diplomacy/education. Callback to his line of “I know how to read boy” in God of War 4.
@@mr.hawklingiii8739 Yeah I always thought of Spartans as experts of war and combat. War being something you need to be smart about to be able to pull off.
@@chaptermastermoloc4171 In the beginning of the game, he claims Mimir was a silver tonged traitor…I’m pretty sure Odin is much more silver tongued than anyone in this game by a large margin 😂
@@chaptermastermoloc4171Yeah, that's true, but in mythology he is treacherous with almost noone knowing his utlimate schemes. Physically its spot on, he should be old and slim guy, plus I love how in this game he doesn't kinda seem like extremely powerful deity most of the time (which is typically deceiving on his part) thx to the way he talks and behaves.
If he cared about mortals he wouldn't have intervened everytime Sparta sent him a prayer, that was Zeus' point, that kratos only answered Sparta and he did it personally. That's why Zeus Wiped out that army, because kratos had intervened on their express behalf again.
Odin is portrayed mostly as a wise old man. But he also embodied insanity, and death. Him being so much of a control freak and the lying God Kratos warned everyone about goes in line with his character and him being the main antagonist. Not entirely accurate with how he speaks but he's a different form of evil than Zeus was.
The reason why he speaks modern language is due to how ahead he is compared to everyone else. He is simply smarter, he even mocks Thor's lesser modern language at some point in the game.
"Beyond the monster that kills without cause." Everytime I hear that line, just makes me say, "Without cause? All this started got kickstarted after Baulder mistook him for a giant and attacked without provocation and initiated the two to head out to spread Fayes ashes." But I think this line was referring more to his past more than anything though.
But even then it wasn’t fully without cause. Sure Kratos killed people who didn’t deserve to die along the way, but a lot of them would have lived if they didn’t try to stop him from killing Zeus.
It’s heavily implied by Sif that Odin knew it was Kratos because of the description Baldur gave him, but sent him, Magni and Modi after Kratos regardless of whether Magni or Modi lived or died.
I was a bit hesitant at first, but I love the take on odin in this game. This god is indeed extremely intelligent, manipulative and deadly powerful. only now was I able to fathom mimir's honest to the T depicting of the all father odin : "Odin's got tricks up his sleeves we haven't dared to consider". you guys have done a fantastic job with this one.
You might find American Gods interesting if you found this take cool. They do a similar thing with Odin in that one as well, and the TV series has Ian McShane play him absolutely perfectly.
that was always a issue i had with the new gow, people did pray to kratos the whole second game is the spartans fighting next to him in athens calling his name
To be fair only the Spartans prayed to him, and that's because he directly helped them out of personal bias and because he was a spartan. No one else did, so Odin is just manipulating that fact
yea but the thing is with the New GoW games if your only experience with GoW is 2018 and this one yes you'd think that but if you played the originals you'd know the people that worshipped him were killed by the Gods and he got his revenge for himself and for them. Best way to put it is Krato's always saw himself as 4 things in 1 particular order A father A spartan A mortal and lastly A god Kratos being brought up as a Spartan however just means he won't admit it or atleast he'd show it in his own way
That line by our boy kratos just proves to everybody down playing kratos power. He knows 100% that he is holding back. I mean that's the whole point of this new saga in kratos's life. That was a badass line from a badass character. Man I love kratos the Man shows no fear.
I’m glad you noticed, Thor constantly asking kratos to show the God killer show him the God of War while kratos holding back not trying to show that side of himself
@@Loner_Mike98definitely. Kratos is too powerful for words really. I mean in a 2018 interview. Barlog stated that if they unleashed kratos full power. There would be no video game, no intrigued story, nothing like what we get because he would blow through the pantheon once more.
I really love this Kratos. Unlike the trope of the boss as a playable character, Kratos turned over a new leaf. If you played all God of War games you really know how strong Kratos is. He shows mercy far more often.
“I think we all have a better idea of who we’re dealing with now.” - no Odin, you really don’t otherwise even with Atreus as insurance you would not dare try to push Kratos’ buttons.
From the moment I heard his voice at the beginning of the game he feels like a sleazy sales person and I love it, it feels like he talks with double speak and tries to actively manipulate every moment of the conversation with the gentle soft spoken voice he uses. When Kratos says “you may see the god I once was” the tiny single step back in fear and then lashing out because he realized there is no controlling what Kratos does and that he is royally fucked at this point was mint.
Odin is a pretty good example of an abusive parent who can destroy their children without raising a hand. Everything he says here eats away at Kratos-his self worth, his desire to be a better person, his struggle to reconcile the essential loss of his humanity. He's empathetic, no doubt, but uses what he feels to hurt others. You just have to look at Thor to see what that sort of thing does to a person.
@@dustinjones7458 I think that’s the point of Odin, he’s mentally the “strongest” in the game. Whereas everyone understands thor is strong asf physically and We’re all aware. In Odins case he walks circles around people when it comes to the physiological battles.
@@DarkLightProduction9 ummmm not.... kratos give their soldier the best condition and training, you can see that when a NORMAL soldier make all hjs way until the fate island only before face the kraken and meet the 3 fate sisters
Another attempt at manipulation by Odin is when instead of picking up the one of the spears, he picks up an instrument used in forges to hold metal in the heat at the same time he is talking about Artreus being the key for peace. The subtle message that those instruments can both be used to melt weapons down and MAKE weapons. Even uses it as a prop by making it a point to throw it away when he says to "Break free" from the cycle of violence. Masterful stage direction.
I like how Odin immediately fled after talking shit to Kratos cause he wasn't sure he would walk away unharmed if he stayed. Also the little things, like Odin taking a step back and starts talking slowly when Kratos threatened him because he wasn't sure if Kratos would do something. Odin is intelligent and a very good strategist, but he could not predict Kratos.
Odin definitely would've beaten Kratos doesn't mean kratos won't try he's beaten many gods i.e death before but Odin has beaten creation and many gods including Thor with ease

Love how the whole time, you can tell that Odin's words don't have an ounce of sincerity in them. Ofc, players learned how Odin was in the first game. But when he did appear, he was exactly as anyone can imagine and then more.
I like how the Norse gods know Kratos destroyed the Greek Pantheon but at the same time don't know that even as a mortal he was respected and maybe even loved by the Spartan Army and just Sparta in general and then you have Atreus who is quite literally his son so even though they argue at times Atreus still loves his father
I find it amazing that the Norse gods know Kratos destroyed the Greek Pantheon and yet they still choose to provoke him into a fight. Balder was understandable because he was cursed not feel pain or die but the others should have known better.
@@louisewilson2044 Well I think at first they mistook him for a giant since Odin was looking for a way to Jotunheim and Baldur was there looking for Faye but if Baldur and Modi gave a description on him which they probably did the Norse gods began to get a better idea on who Kratos is cause they clearly know him by reputation
There's a small detail that's easily missed "arguable." In that moment he's telling Kratos "if it means ending this, right here, right now, take the shot." It lands with disgust because Kratos raised his spear, indicating he's willing to speak with Odin. So many wonderful layers to this scene, all based on deeply contextual character motivations. SQUEEE
This whole interaction was amazing Odin pushing his insecurities onto kratos revealing exactly what he is and what his intentions are as well as having his back to Odin because he trusts mimr and trusts his judgement towards Odin giving him the validation that he is in fact lying argh this whole game was so amazing brought me to tears
Best part of this game is that even though it's still very touching and emotional storytelling, they still manage to have badass fights and cold ass lines😭👌🏾
All I can think of as a response to Odin’s question - if this were a reel or a video vine is the scene in 300 rise of an empire when the Spartans arrive.
This is a perfect example of Odin's mastery of manipulation. He knows all of Kratos story for sure, but he chose to say those things to try n goad him. He knew he was obfuscating the truth, trying to find the cracks in Kratos' mental armor. He knows how Kratos hates a lot of his actions and did his best to make him feel like nothing. Truly shows how Odin weilds words like a weapon, better than any assassin blade
Everything Odin said about Kratos not understanding godhood is so spot on because that’s exactly how he feels about himself. He just can’t help his thirst for understanding his purpose, despite the responsibilities he knows he has to the people of the nine realms and his own son, Thor. Ironically it is these responsibilities that ARE his purpose, which is what Kratos has come to understand as a father and a leader.

The story, dialogue, and character development in this game are truly outstanding,

They did have metaphors in Greece, but not in Sparta. The Spartans were direct and on the point, with as little words as possible.

This exchange here I think is the first time in a LONG time or ever, Odin has been confronted with someone who has been able to see through the silver tongue while also having the strength, power, and credibility to back up the threats.
100% agree I noticed he was rattled but tried immediately to hide it
You also have to add as well that Kratos is pretty much the embodiment of Odin's worst nightmares.
I know some people didn't like Odin, but I thought it was a perfect performance of a charming charismatic manipulator.
Richard Schiff is an absolute master.

@@Phantom_Zone oh yeah I 100% every entry it's my favorite gaming franchise of all time
“I think we all have a better idea of who we’re dealing with now.” - no Odin, you really don’t otherwise even with Atreus as insurance you would not dare try to push Kratos’ buttons.
"Has anyone ever worshipped you?"
"Yeah like... whole armies, for years. I almost conquered all of Greece with them."
Then Odin would retorted by saying, “And you gave them nothing but havoc in return for their loyalty and service to you.”
@@NhBleker Ya got a point there. :/

“Return my son. Or you may meet the god I once was.” Such a badass line.
2:49 Kratos casually takes deep breaths so that he doesn't accidentally beat the shit out of Odin
kratos :"whoops my hand slipped"
he was close lmao
2:23 holy hell Christopher Judge makes that line all the more menacing!
@@joshuamcjoshuamc3231I doubt it. especially if kratos really did return to the god he was. If he did then there wouldn't be a single God in gowr that could've stopped him

Love how the whole time, you can tell that Odin's words don't have an ounce of sincerity in them. Ofc, players learned how Odin was in the first game. But when he did appear, he was exactly as anyone can imagine and then more.

odin:and what kind of god is that kratos?

SO fucking badass 🔥
We all know that when Kratos puts away his weapons, that's when you should be most afraid. You gonna get these Spartan hands.
Return my son, or you may meet the god I once was.
That was no threat that was a promise
I love how Odin slightly backs out when kratos threatens him with that line. Says a lot how dangerous Kratos is and that he is feared even by Odin.
This Odin seems like a mafia leader.
Not too far from our myths, actually.
I hate this voice tho
@@coltonwilliams4153 Trash myth.Greek and Egyptian mythology>>>>trash Scandinavia mythology.
Big “wise guy” energy from Odin the entire game
Odin: “Has anyone ever prayed to you?”
Kratos: “Yeah, Heimdall”
There's a small detail that's easily missed "arguable."
In that moment he's telling Kratos "if it means ending this, right here, right now, take the shot." It lands with disgust because Kratos raised his spear, indicating he's willing to speak with Odin.
So many wonderful layers to this scene, all based on deeply contextual character motivations. SQUEEE
"The Gods I have slain would make you their bitch. Do not test me...boy."
Odins level of gaslighting in this game is god-tier lmao
god of gaslighting
God-tyr you mean
Imagine having the audacity to completely shrug off the Ghost of Sparta's "You may meet the god I once was" line with a manipulative comeback.
Odin was an asshole, but he was cunning, we have to give him that
The dialogue between the protagonist and the antagonist is just so beautifully written
Best part of this game is that even though it's still very touching and emotional storytelling, they still manage to have badass fights and cold ass lines😭👌🏾
The way his face expression changes when Odin calls him monster is just stunning
Odin saying Kratos was never truly loved or worshiped, yet Ghost of Sparta showed us the Spartans seemed to like him a helluva lot more than Ares.
All I can think of as a response to Odin’s question - if this were a reel or a video vine is the scene in 300 rise of an empire when the Spartans arrive.
Noticed how he changed his posture at 0:17? He knew shit could go down any second, why not stay in pose while we are at it.
I gotta say, I really *really* love Odin as the villain. He reminds me of a slimy Hollywood producer played by Billy Crystal.
This scene shows how great of a manipulator Odin really was.
"The hands of Hel could not defeat me, the zesty Heimdall could not hold me, and YOU will not see the end of this DAY! I WILL HAVE MY BOY!"
1:10 Interesting how he just says Brok here, accidentally letting slip he knows Sindri wasn't there.
A moment of silence for the newbies who never played the original trilogy to make this moment epic.
