Great job. I am so happy to see, that my Series Land Rovers will survive on the road, not rotting to dust in barn or melted to poor metal on a scrapyard. Go ahead.👍😄😄😄
As someone who has driven Land Rovers for over forty years I have to say you have done a beautiful job with this conversion. Maybe those side batteries could be better placed somewhere inboard for any serious off-road use, but otherwise a great piece of re-engineering.
Within a decade, I'm hoping that mass production of electric vehicle conversion kits for any car model comes about, with installation done quickly and economically by franchised garages. When my 2004 rust-free poverty-spec little car finally dies of a 'not economical to repair' engine failure, it's not being scrapped. I like the car so much, I'm storing it until it can be affordably converted.
Thats what we hope too. Old 4WDS are relatively easy as the assembly is simple and the shapes are easy to work with. Newer cars have a lot of strange shapes and fasteners that make them better to assemble by robots but hard to work on by humans. The labour cost is a challenge
@@Jauntmotors you must build a smaller kit that bolts on the a standard puma that still has an engine in. Like adding a turbo but better. Would be amazing
What a clean conversion !! Love it !! How easy would it be to put some AC on one of this ? I’m about to start this project in Colombia and yours is a perfect role model for me !!
What a fantastic conversion, with just one detail raising my eyebrow a bit. You mentioned replacing the drum handbrake at the rear of the transmission with a disc setup. Drums are generally accepted as providing a better handbrake, where the main use isn't in actually slowing the vehicle, just anchoring it. A disc setup will more likely have exposed friction surfaces catching any transmission leaks and have less friction surface area. Change just for the sake of change is a financial cost without reward.
It's a debate we had internally. The challenge is the series drum hand brakes aren't great, and require continual adjustment. without an internal combustion engine there is nothing stopping the car from rolling but the handbrake - no compression in the electric motor when left in gear. So we had to put something more powerful in, and the disc is much much stronger. Easier for most people to keep it clean than adjust the drum
@@Jauntmotors Sounds like the rest of the vehicle, it was very well thought through. I've never had or worked on a Land Rover and wasn't aware of the specific downsides on that handbrake drum.
Two things… First of all thank you youtube algorithm for making this video pop up on my feed. That being said OF COURSE mega Like and subscribe. Now, OMG guys you are crazy crazy talented and your attention to detail is something that speaks to your character heaps. I will be closely be keeping an eye on the development of your concept and amazing business model! I confess i am now officially a new fan boy of your work!…let us know if you are ever in Radelaide ad the land rover community hear in SA is full of very cool people!
Awesome job ! Simply stunning !!!! Only weak link i see is the original gearbox... Would you consider getting rid of it entirely, and drive a modern transfer case directly from the electric motor ?
@@Jauntmotors Thanks ! So what about this modern 2 speed gearbox with lockable diff : th-cam.com/video/4_yw5ySXDf4/w-d-xo.html You could use it in place of the original transfer case by simply rotating the assembly 90 degrees. Engine could be mounted directly to it, or kept under the hood and connected to the gearbox through a regular drive shaft. Does that sound crazy to you ?
Alternatively you can always slap a Powerglide 2 speed (without torque converter) to your motor: th-cam.com/video/Ie7qvo-aC5k/w-d-xo.html. I kinda love the idea of keeping the motor under the hood and connecting it to the transfer case with a drive shaft, because that would probably let you delete the transmission tunnel, have a fully flat cabin floor and a happy middle passenger.
Magnificent. Only minor disappointment is that the "camp mode" button doesn't turn it into Kenneth Williams. But I'm assuming you offer that as a custom extra.
What a car, beautiful. I would even.delete the gearbox. Less is more when it comes to cars is my filosofy. Never liked landrovers but now im getting older I find them better looking especially the older types the new spaceships no ill pass on that.
This might be a silly question but do these conversions prevent the vehicle from completing water crossings? Like are the electronics under the bonnet etc.
Always wanted an EV conversion to mimic ICE torque curves to keep a closer stick shift experience rather than putting it in 3rd and leaving it. (Obv w improved performance)
Hi ya… I love this application. I have an imported 2008 Landrover Defender 90 (2.4) with all the fancy British non Australian configuration has 6000km on it however I want something special - I think this is it - Are you interested in doing something with that? Please let me know Cheers muchly
Hi and thanks. Yes! We have a few later model defenders in the workshop and we'll be releasing more details soon on the spec. Basically twice the power as we put into the series.
Just amount of batteries and the associated cost. We can fit nearly double the batteries in one of these vehicles. Wether a 1973 Land Rover really needs to travel that far is a different question.
Theres always space for more batteries, you've just got to want to pay for them and need to drive that far. With the Tesla motor builds they're doing they're restricted to 16 modules, no more, no less. We can do on a minimum of 5 and up to 20
We wish we could have a fixed, published price, but theres so many variables and with an 18 month wait list the price today won't be the price in a year. While our labour time (and cost) is coming down, component prices are going up. Batteries went up 15% this month for example. As we grow in volume we'll have more stock and will be able to lock down pricing. Still expensive for the next few years though.
But now its not a Landrover. Take away the HALO effect of LR, if the EV use case worked, folk would be doing these with functional 4wd, eg Landcruisers..
Range anxiety is still a thing, particularly here in Australia with less than the best charging infrastructure, though theres thousands now. This car has about a 250km range which is about all you want to do in an old Land Rover in a day anyway. The public charge port I'm using in this video is powered by wind energy, and the ultimate home for this vehicle has a solar setup they'll be using to charge. Unfortunately most of our energy in Australia is from coal, but the carbon emissions from using form of electricity in a battery electric vehicle are still way less than the original petrol motor.
Please try to be polite in your statements . It's a laudable venture , if not one that's going to make easy money for anyone's considerable hours involved . Further to my engine noise comment , I saw someone yesterday wearing Bose noise cancelling headphones whilst driving an ex-army 130 ragtop . Had to laugh .

Very cool build and well thought out. It's nice to see a conversion that is complete and polished.
thanks
Wow. That’s an amazing achievement. When I finally get my 71 shorty I’ll be looking for an ev conversation.
We'll be waiting
Simply marvellous and one of the cleanest/coolest looking under hood designs around. Well done!

Thanks. And yes we wish the chassis was a little wider. But we do a sill pack protection plate that keeps it pretty safe
Hello Jaunt. You just made me go fix my Toyota landcruiser. Thank you for all your videos and detailed inf.
Glad we could provide some motivation. Lets get all these old 4wDs back on the road, no mater the motor
Amazing! We would love to do this upgrade on our 66’ Bronco
Wish we have more broncos over here
Love the work and attention to detail that your doing. Im hoping you get a UK partner on board soon.
Well done! I love the retro car...reminds me of the cars in Gattaca.
Damn I want one! One day I'd love to convert the Series 3 and the 110!
Love the “gas” cap.
Nice touch being able to monitor each cell 👌

Fantastic. Great work!
Looking to do a 60series
absolutely love it, great work Jaunt

whats th price range for one in aus? 150k?

We need a bit more torque to do that. But we're looking at an optional single reduction gear between motor and original transfer case

inspiring stuff !

what is a ballpark figure to buy this or have it done ?

That's the plan!
@@Jauntmotors I’d be interested to know the cost as I’m looking into this in the UK.... I know it’s not cheap! I have a 72 Series 3
Would this be possible with a l322 07’ ?
Outstanding job ,, what does it cost , is it available as a DIY kit.
I'm looking forward to the day I can convert my 2.2 puma Defender at a reasonable cost. I'd be wanting some serious tyre shredding grunt though.
Exactly what we’re working on
preis?
Are you working on getting a production kit to sell soon?
We are yes. Building a couple more in house first

Great work. Question around weight.. does it affect body roll and did you have to alter the suspension?
The centre of gravity is a bit lower. About 50-100kg heavier overall. We use parabolic springs and the shocks are a bit stiffer than stock
I'd like to see this conversion into Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40...
can you go bush bashing or submerge the engine, say i needed to get to a station and had to cross a flooded river
Beautiful job 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you! Cheers!
I want that kit for our wotkshops in the uk can you help us
Outstanding!
Is it possible to pull off an engine swap for a Nissan Patrol to achieve electric conversion?

what cost
This might be a silly question but do these conversions prevent the vehicle from completing water crossings? Like are the electronics under the bonnet etc.
Lots of electronics under the bonnet, but almost all sealed components, then inside another sealed box
Very professional work. Love the attention to details. Noticed your in VIC, where abouts are you located and do you have a shop? Cheers
Thanks. We're in Williamstown. Come say hi one day
who stole my bbq grill mesh?
Beautiful, Dave. What mileage will that size battery give you, and are you getting close to working out a kit price (and what would the kit comprise)?
Thanks Nick. We're getting about 250km out of the battery. We're still finalising pricing on the kit, will release very soon
Im in Australia but have a rhd 1984 Trans Am Im turning into a KITT from Knight Rider... chance this would fit in that engine bay?
We could absolutely make something fit. It's all very modular. Electric KITT would be amazing. 80's sports cars look like they should be electric
WoW!
You likely have the most trouble free land Rover ever with that ev conversion
Thats the plan.
Always wanted an EV conversion to mimic ICE torque curves to keep a closer stick shift experience rather than putting it in 3rd and leaving it. (Obv w improved performance)
If you want to shift you can wring a lot more speed out of the system. Its only 230Nm so not crazy amounts of torque
