    4 years old and STILL BY FAR the best and most comprehensive instruction. No DIYer should start a crown molding project without watching this video. While watching, I was initially disappointed that inside cuts didn't include coping. But just a few minutes later, that instruction was given as an upgraded approach and fully covered. I especially loved the tips on gluing outside corners at 90 degrees, even when it initially doesn't appear that will work on your imperfect walls... and the reasoning why. Very nice.

    Without a doubt the best explanation of working with crown molding that I have ever seen!
    Jim I have been in the trades for 50 years and installed a lot of crown but your methods by far are superior. Your tone, demeanor and method of teaching really brings the process all together……THANK YOU!

      Well said! When working with any reverse measurements, my brain has really hard time dealing with. I found a solution for my case, I work on upsidedown position, not confortable but works!🤣🤣 Joking, but it's a issue that I can't fix. Something in my brain that reversing thoughts is not for me, when I have to do set ups like in this video.

    After searching dozens of crown moulding installation videos, I finally found THE one that was beautifully done with closeups and a perfect instructional style by Jim Heavey. This is the ONLY video that used common sense and provided clear instructions. I now feel more confident in tackling my crown moulding projects. THANKS!!

    I have watched so many videos on how to install crown molding. And NONE of them taught me a thing until I watched this video. This was the best learning experience I have had in a long time. I know have a set of templates that I will keep and add yo my collection. Great job. Thank you Wood Magazine.

    Mr. Heavey, you may not read this, but I wanna say thank you from the bottom of my heart. I had never done crown molding in my life before I found your video. I always found it intimidating and I was nervous to do it. Your instructions were precise and very well explained. I used your advice on creating my templates and it worked perfectly. I have a miter saw but never payed attention to anything other than zero or 45 °. Again thank you for your professional instruction.

    Jim I was an instructor for 45 yrs of my working in the field; thus I tend to be very sensitive when it comes; to how given instructors teach. Thus, I must say this; kind Sir, you have an innate (one can not learn that) teaching extraordinaire talent; that I have seen little in my many yrs over many..
    Thank you so much for doing what you are doing. What ever you make working for "Wood" working; they should double your salary dear man. Amen!~

    Great video, Jim! Your directions are easy to understand also. When measuring for molding, what I do, is use the tape and measure out, say, two or three feet, make a mark. Turn the tape to the opposite wall, measure to the mark just made and add that measure length. 3'mark and add the 7' 3/4" making wall 10' 3/4" total. Just use the tape, quick and done!

    I had done two rooms several years ago using an old miter box, placing the pieces at 45 degrees and cutting, no problem. This go I have a wider crown molding and cannot make the miter box work; bought a compound, sliding, 12" miter saw and thought all would be a breeze. This video will help me tommrow - all the pointers in the video were exactly what I needed help with! Thank you very much, Doug

    This is best explanation and method of cutting crown molding that I have ever heard. There seems to be no specific method to cutting molding using the nested method, which seems assume that a person can walk backwards and upside down at the same time. Also, this video showed me how to use the angle chart on how to set your mitre and bevel, kind of the same idea as the CRC Standard Mathematical Tables I used in school.

    I definitely prefer this method. I credit Mr. Heavey for teaching me how to do crown molding that looks amazing. I was able to do stain grade using this method(no caulk) and it was TIGHT. I do, in paint grade however, like to use Jeff Thorman's method of putting spackle in the nail holes, instead of caulk. It does not shrink. Did an entry way with casing and trim on both sides, tacked about 60+ nails in the whole project. There are exactly TWO that are visible(only because the nails didn't go in all the way)-and barely visible/difficult to find. It is absolutely impossible to find the others- they are gone.

    Thank you ! Jim I have to say since I watched your company video I had no idea how much easier and safer it was to cut crown. It wasn’t perfect but it was acceptable. The cabinet company wanted to send someone over to cut my piece of crown for $616.00 which included their piece of crown $347.00 for a 8 ft. Piece! What a sucker they must have thought.

    good vid. however, with my miter saw the correct bevel was 34.9 degrees and the correct miter was 35 degrees. after an hour of hit misses on angles, I finally found the sweet spot. a bit of advanced geometry with this type of project. the springer angle on my molding was 52 degrees.

    I’m wondering what I’m doing wrong because I followed your steps to the letter and when I join the pieces, they are not close to a 90° angle. I just want to let you know that your videos are very insightful and educational and I love them and have built quite a few jigs that you have recommended. This failure has me perplexed and I’m hoping you can help. I checked both the blade is 90° to the fence and 90° to the table so I don’t understand what I’m doing wrong

    I finished a luxury closet last year using 6.5" walnut crown. I wish I had known about this technique. I ran into the exact problems he mentioned when cutting upside down and backwards. It was difficult keeping the heavy crown in constant contact with the fence, and I also had finish cutting the last 1/2 inch by hand because of the depth.

  • @tomnelson7438
    @tomnelson7438 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What about 16' long walls? Your folding tape measure still good? We also cope our inside corners...rarely just miters.

  • @bobmackey8529
    @bobmackey8529 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I like your method of making templates. But here is my problem. I have an odd ball outside corner = 133 degrees. The chart says miter = 17.09, bevel = 16.37. Two settings virtually impossible to achieve. So far I have not been able to get the answer to the question: which is more important, miter or bevel?
    It seems to me that miter is more important, because miter error leaves a gap at top or bottom. If bevel is too much then less surface area making contact, bevel too small means outer edges do not meet.
    Am I visualizing this correctly, or have I missed something?

    • @simpleshoes
      @simpleshoes 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would get some drywall compound and skim from the corner until it’s level. Or if it’s really not that bad, then put up the crown level leaving the gap and then fill it with caulking. You can then skim the ceiling out from there.

    How do you measure a length that is longer than the wood rule

  • @tycox8704
    @tycox8704 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the cons of cutting crown flat outweigh the convenience. For one, there are a confusing number of spring options that require complex math to determine the miter and bevel settings. Secondly, it’s difficult to predict where a beveled blade will travel through the wood, making precise length cuts tedious.
