From an adult's perspective it can feel like nothing happens in this movie, but I think Adam was right that it's like "the day in the life of a four year old." How life changing and magical is it to a tiny child to not just move house, but to move to a whole new town, one that's very different from the city you've presumably been in your whole little life? That's why the acorns are so shiny, because they appear to be a golden treasure to a child. And even just having plans change like their mom coming home the following weekend instead of that weekend can feel world ending at that age.
You're right that they really got the childish mannerisms down, but more than that, I think the reason this film is so impactful is because they truly respect the world-view of the small children protagonists. It feels like a magical adventure to move to a new house, so in the film it IS. It feels strange and scary and lonely (and a little magical) for you to be waiting somewhere for your parent but they don't show up, so in the film it IS. And it feels so sad and scary and tragic that your mother can't come home from the hospital this weekend, so in the film it IS.
I was lucky enough to see this film as a very small child c. 1992 ish? My grandma bootlegged the original FOX dub for us onto a random VHS tape that ended up getting lost a few years later, but I always remembered it so strongly. To this day I still look for Totoro tunnels when I'm out and about. 😆
From the time period and the fact that they seemed to need to move to the countryside due to the mother's illness, people have apparently speculated that she might have been ill with TB perhaps? But since the girls were probably too young to understand (or be told) exactly what she had, there's no way for the viewer to know for sure.
Edit: Oh I forgot I wanted to say that you're also so right about the Alice in Wonderland vibes. She totally follows a white rabbit(esque creature) down a tunnel into a fantasy world with strange disappearing cats and direction-shifting paths etc. Also maybe a little bit of Mary Poppins vibe with Totoro being a magical being looking out for them who flies with an umbrella in the wind hahaha.
38:30 the rope on the tree is a shimenawa - those are usually used to indicate the presence of a god/spirit (kami), you can see them in shinto shrines in Japan. Totoro appears to be one of the kami.
I haven't watched Totoro in a long while and also got emotional at the tree growing scene for some reason, so I was glad to see it had the same effect on Sarah x) I'm far from an expert on spiritual/cultural manners, but from my surface-level knowledge and impressions after living in Japan for a few years, I really love the emphasis on taking care of nature and being grateful to it that seems to be intertwined with shinto practices.
Thank you very much for the lovely Christmas watch, hope you have wonderful holidays!
You know you can always count on me to be a crying partner!!
There are many Japanese people who don't have a strong faith in any religion, and I'm one of them.
However, as you say, I think there are many Japanese people who naturally have a Shinto-like way of thinking, and what you say is a very Japanese explanation👍
Just as there is a Shinto way of thinking that "everything has a soul," I hope that you, the people around you, and even things and events will have a good year next year☺️✌️
Shimenawa (paper hanging) are attached to sacred places and objects.
That's why it's not only attached to shrines, but also to Dosojin and sumo wrestlers along the way, and even to New Year's rice cakes.
Merry Christmas to Sarah and Adam! I'm from Taiwan, also a big fan of this channel, I have to say...I almost cried out after finding you watched Totoro, at that moment I thought " OMG Sarah is gonna love this! ". I grew up in mid-80's, and I would say no one as my age in asia didn't grew up watching the Miyazaki Hayao's film, maybe we were too young to remember the name"Gibli Studio", but when somebody talks about Miyazaki Hayao the legend, we would be like" Oh! Totoro's director." We even have a Chinese cover of the theme song of it, and I believe every elemantary school, or even high school has played it at lunch time through the broadcast system. It became the common memory of our generation.
In my perosnal defination, Totoro is the best one above all the Miyazaki Hayao's work. Just like Adam's saying, they had put so much work trying to recurrence all the detail, all of the kid's movement, perspectives, that's incredible . I majored in creative writting at my college, We put so much work to try to make our fiction character real, even in a fantasy story, it's just taking everything to design the right movement with right emotion in right situation. So I give all my respect to Mr.Miyazaki to make daily life on the screen seems so natural, so simple, normal, but never boring.
Also, The mother nature takes a big part in Japanese religeon, to make it simple, they believe the mountain, wind, plants,flowers... everything have spirits in it to respect, You can clearly see Totoro is coming from this kind of concept. I was getting emotional too at the tree growing scene everytime. Same as Sarah. :)
Thank you for the wonderful explanation!!
As you pointed out, in Japan, gods are enshrined everywhere. On the night when the two sisters were waiting for the bus with their father in the dark, there was a white fox statue at the old small shrine that Mei was afraid of (59:40). That is a representation of "Inari," the fox deity found all over Japan. Did you know that the mascot for Inarizaki High School in Haikyuu is a fox? For Japanese people, hearing the word "Inari" immediately brings to mind the fox deity. (Sorry if you already know.)
@@hachi1404 Thank you for the farther explanation! I know that "Inari" means fox diety. Actually I was going to point out the same thing(59:40) in the first message but I was afraid to make it too long.XDDDD it's really amazing to see someone filled it up in response. :) I didn't find it when I was a child, really happy to notice it as a grown-up. It makes me wondering if not just Totoro, but every god, deity, spirits can use the catbus? Maybe Totoro showed up there because of he just has finished visiting The Fox deity...?
I also notice at 1:36:40, there were "Taisha大社", "tomb passage墓道", "Three mounds三之塚", which makes me believe the cat bus is well-loved by all kinds of spiritual exists, gods, dieties, guardian spirits, ghosts...
By the way, love Haikyuu too! it's really cute how Haikyuu uses the animal to represent their own team spirit!

@@hachi1404 Thank you for the reply too^^ I wouldn't say my japanese is good but I do dig in Japan's artwork for a long time. There are many great writers, composers and artists in your country, how lucky you are! Anyway, really nice talking with you^^ wish you have a wonderful new year as well!
@@mihida123 Happy to hear I am such lucky. Thank you😊 I love J-POP, manga, J-novels actually. BTW, everyone around me, visited your country, says that Taiwan is a great country full of kind people. Cheers! 🥂
Yess!! You guys definitely need to react to Howl’s Moving Castle after this one, you guys would definitely enjoy it!
i would kiki and then princess mononoke
The grave of the fireflies
Omg plEASEE❤❤❤❤❤
In the English dub !!! Sooo much more emotion was put into Ghibli’s all star dub casts!
Fire flies is the best for starter
My Neighbor Totoro was released in 1988. The story is set in the late 1950s to early 1960s, during Japan’s Showa era. 😊
I was born in the 1980s in Japan, and this was the first movie I ever saw, back when I was in kindergarten. Its theme song is very famous, and anyone from my generation in Japan would have grown up listening to it.😊
そうね、VHSが擦り切れるまで見ましたね(^o^)
Bruv, it was even famous in ASEAN in 1990s. When even internet has not like just nowadays.
@@nurlindafsihotang49
Ghibli's fame in Japan is incomparable to those. At the time, Ghibli was 100 times more popular in Japan than it was in ASEAN. You don't know because you're not Japanese. Literally everyone in Japan knew about Ghibli and it was regularly shown on TV.
I adore this movie, it's so realistic and so full of wonder at the same time. I'm glad you guys enjoyed it.
For Japanese people just 50 to 60 years ago, taking a hot bath with small children was an important time for parents to wash away the day's fatigue and grime and to warm their hearts.
Although such scenes have become rare nowadays, for us Japanese this is a heartwarming scene of "the good old Japan."
🥰

I was born in 1990 in a japanese-brasilian family. When I was about 3 I got Totoro on VHS from a cousin visiting from Japan and I think I watched this movie everyday from a long time. Its my favorite Ghibli movie. I dont speak much japanese but I can understand most of the dialogue of the movie and still can sing along to the opening and closing credits even though I havent watched it in years. I also keep smiling nonstop while watching it, its just so endearing and cute. Lovely reaction!
Me and my son have watched this about 50 times together. He loves and it so do I. So glad you were able to see it!
The soundtrack is incredible. The opening and ending are very very good. And I cannot believe how great the dub is. I’ve never actually watched the sub before and I think the dub/translation is actually bettee
I have seen this movie almost 100 times. When I saw it as a child, I was excited; when I saw it as an adult, I found it a bit boring. But when I watched it again as a more mature adult, I was moved to tears. It will always be my favorite movie.
I watched this when I was in my teens, I found it cool. I am near 50 now, it has being a long while since I last watched it and it still stir up emotions. My kid sister was around 6 when we watched it and for her Totoro meant the world, we had a VHS tape with it and she would watch it every day, funny thing she is in her late 30s now and a therapist, I can see her having a Totoro tattoo...
I haven't watched Totoro in well over a decade, if not two, and it is still as gorgeous and charming a film as the first time I watched it. Hayao Miyazaki's entire body of work is an absolute treasure beyond compare. Everyone should experience his full filmography at least once (not just his international hits).
If you watch the end credits the mom returns home during them and the girls make a totoro snowman that tototo confusingly stares at. Note they did a follow up special to this with mai and totoro having to go return a baby catbus mai found to its mom and mai goes with totoro on an adventure, but it never got released outside of japan. You can watch it at the Ghibli museum in japan still.
This movie is a classic! You must have seen totoro at least once if you have been to Japan since his cute character design is pretty popular.
This ghibli movie is culturally relevant and emits childhood nostalgia for traditional Japanese familylife on the countryside. It’s also deeply personal to Hayao Miyazaki, the cofounder of studio ghibli, since he lived a similar childhood on the countryside with his brother and father. They had to suddenly move there when Miyazaki was about seven, because his mother was hospitalized for years because of tuberculosis. Satsuki and mei might be a reflection of the emotional state of him and his brother.
What I also find really interesting about the story is the casual perspective around the supernatural, which seems cultural and encapsulates the curiosity of a child’s mind. There is also a ton of folklore depicted that people explain I video essays, articles etc. The ending especially has a few interpretations connected to a real event.
What a lovely surprise!! This is definitely a comfort film to so so many people, and I’m glad you both enjoyed it :’) I would say a lot of households- Asian especially lol- definitely grew up on Ghibli films, so this was definitely in the rotation. I remember watching so many of them as a little child, and they still make me emotional to this day (don’t worry Sarah, the tree sprouting scene also makes me tear up a bit).
The illustration of the ending song depicts the scene where the mother leaves the hospital and spends time with them. A third child is also depicted.
最後の エンドロールまで見て欲しかったなぁ😊 その中に お母さんが退院して その後が少し見られます。👍🏻✨✨✨
Sometimes, a pure wholesome story where not much actually happens is exactly what you need.
I wached it as an adult and I absolutely love it. It lights up your soul. I think we are what we eat in all ways - what content we consume daily as well. And as you pointed out it is very wholesome and pure story (growing a tree scene is magical). I wish there are more movies and stories like this for kids and adults. I'll definetly be showing this to my kids when time comes. My respect to Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki.
I personally really love another Ghibli's film "Howl’s Moving Castle". Consider checking it out. Happy holiday season!
Near the beginning of the movie when there was that big wind storm, I wonder if that was the cat-bus racing by.
You can 100% get emotional over art. It's why I love anime so much. It mixes art, story and music so beautifully and to me is the ultimate for of art expression ESPECIALLY Ghibli movies. I do all the time. It invokes so much emotion even if what you're watching isn't necessarily something sad.
Thank you for watching Totoro.
Ghibli films skillfully incorporate stories and direction that are very nostalgic and touch the heartstrings of many Japanese people, and I believe that the same is true for many foreigners. However, since many works set in Japan express unique customs, values, or ancient religious views, there may be times when you do not understand or are confused, but I would be happy if you can enjoy the story of each work with an open mind.
By the way, other than Totoro, my favorites are Nausicaa, Castle in the Sky, Porco Rosso, and Princess Mononoke.
In particular, I was very overwhelmed and greatly impressed by Princess Mononoke when I first saw it at the cinema as a child.

The music reminds me of my elementary school days in Japan, when it would often play during recess, lunchtime, or while we cleaned the classroom after eating.
I’m not sure how it is in other countries or the schools where Sarah and Adam grew up, but it’s customary for students to clean the classrooms, hallways, stairs, and even the toilets in Japan.
Not only My Neighbor Totoro, but also the music from Kiki’s Delivery Service was often played during recess and cleaning time, so listening to it brings back memories of my childhood as well as the movies. I don’t clearly remember how old I was when I first watched this movie, but I think it was during my elementary school years.
Studio Ghibli films are very familiar to us Japanese, and they’re so popular that they are regularly broadcast every few years on a program called Friday Roadshow.
If you enjoyed this movie, I highly recommend checking out Kiki’s Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and Princess Mononoke.
I really love your predictions and analyses. Thank you for such a wonderful video this Christmas!
I wish we had the cleaning tradition in my country. I think a lot of the kids would be more responsible.
当時は2作品の同時公開でトトロが終わった後に火垂るの墓が公開され、当時の子供の心にトラウマを刻みました笑
To be honest this was my first time watching Totoro, was so fun to watch with yall, very cute animation and wholesome!
Great reaction as always!!
If you get the chance, I highly recommend watching ”Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” and ”Castle in the Sky”. Both are works by Hayao Miyazaki, older than "My Neighbor Totoro", but they’re absolutely amazing and will likely match your tastes perfectly
Despite being older films, they don’t feel dated at all even today. When I first watched Nausicaä on TV as a child, I was so stunned that I was in a daze for several days. Watching it again as an adult with friends, I was reminded of how much of a masterpiece it is. These two are my top picks among Miyazaki’s works.
yes!!! i recently watched Nausicaä and instantly fell in love with for both the visuals + story. i hope sarah and adam end up reacting to princess mononoke at some point in the future too!
@@silevon Agreed!
I love Ashitaka and San, and Eboshi is also such an attractive character indeed🥰 It's truly a masterpiece.
Nausicaa is my favorite movie of all time! Such a timeless classic, I wish more people knew about it
aside from Spirited Away, all of Miyazaki's movies are set around postwar times, Miyazaki himself was the son of an airplane engineer (did you see Kenta playing with wooden planes earlier in the movie) and most of his work has an anti-war feel to it. So most of his stories have a late 1940s-1950s feel to it, it is very likely that the mother had pneumonia which would have a long treatment back then in any country but in Japan, being the post war and a losing nation, the situation would have made it even harder for her. Moving her to a hospital in the countryside would be beneficial for her indeed, but still, a change of environment could also have its moments, especially if you're used to the smog of a big city like Tokyo or Osaka. This is just a theory on my part.
ps. I'd recommend that when you have the time, you look up Joe Hisaishi in concert on youtube and put it in the background while you're doing other stuff around the house if you don't want to just sit and watch. He did all of the sountracks for Ghibli.
Among Miyazaki's works, "The Wind Rises" and "The Boy and the Heron" are set before and during the war. "Totoro" is set in the countryside a few years after the war.
He himself is quite anti-war, but on the other hand, he has a strong admiration for the mechanics of airplanes and fighter planes, and he himself has mentioned this contradiction.
"Spirited Away," which you mentioned at the beginning, should be set around the 2000s, the same time the film was released.
The oldest setting in Miyazaki's works is probably "Princess Mononoke." It is set in the Muromachi period, about 700 to 800 years ago.
Incidentally, Ghibli also has "The Princess Kaguya," which is set in the Heian period, older than Princess Mononoke, and "Grave of the Fireflies," which is set at the end of the war, but these are Takahata's works, not Miyazaki's.
The film is set in the 1950s, when the mother's illness is tuberculosis.
At the time, there was no cure, and the best treatment was to rest in a place with clean air.
The voice actress for Nanny is Tanie Kitabayashi,
who was 77 years old when the film was released,
and her acting is one of the best in Japan.
The countryside depicted in this film has long since disappeared in Japan,
but it remains one of the most beloved works in Japan.
Awww this upload really made my day. Hoping for more Ghibli reaction^/❤
yayyy! this is such a comfort movie but I remember being so scared of Totoro when i first watched this when i was little😂
I loved your reaction. Totoro is a simple, sensitive and at the same time powerful film. Just adding to your perception: the Japanese have an animistic relationship with things. The father was thanking the tree. I saw a documentary about ceramics where they por some sake for the kiln spirits to help with the firing. We westerners have a different conception of many things. And I understand that for them spirits, beings like totoro are manifestations of nature and therefore very real. Fun fact: when you answer the phone you say "moshi moshi" to make sure you're not talking to a kitsune (like a mystical fox). So Totoro has another weight for them, even though only children and old people can see him.
And I love this movie it's really touching. I have a Totoro mug!
Keep up the work, love you!
Totoro is my childhood. Really miss it.
I teared up during the tree raising scene too 😂
This was my second Studio Ghibli film. Since then I've watched all of them multiple times but this is still my favourite.
The thing about this film is that it doesn't need an insane plot or layers of depth to be enjoyable. I mean the biggest point of conflict is a kid getting lost for a couple hours lol. It's a simple and beautiful movie. I feel like I could watch it a hundred times and still love it just as much. I'm glad you guys liked it.
The time period of this anime is set in 1952.
It is seven years after the end of the war.
**Grave Of Fireflies**
such an adorable christmas present from Sarah and Adam, thank you very much! as a fan from taiwan, I can guarantee that most of us watched totoro (and also many other Ghibli movies) when we were young, so glad you also enjoyed it!
Omg!! I didn’t know you had an anime channel!!
I rly love how you react to anime so, I can’t wait to watch your reactions ❤
When Mei cried, with Kanto by her side. She yelled "Onee-chan no baka" meaning "Big sister you dummy" or "Bigsister you dumbass". It got poorly translated to "big sister, i hate you" .. "baka" does mean hate. it means, stupid, idiot, or dumb. :)
Its old movie and translation, nowadays internet knows Baka :)
Meanwhile the English dub itself was phenomenal and Totoro’s roar was ten times better.
I think Miyazaki's mother had TB and she was in the hospital a lot. The mother likely has pneumonia or something akin to it.
Mei names it Totoro, in the very beginning of the movie during the opening credits, you see the mother reading the girls a story book of “the three Billy goats gruff “, a very famous traditional childhood story of three goats trying to cross a bridge that has a troll living underneath that wants to eat them, in Japanese troll is pronounced, “tororu”, but Mei being so young can’t pronounce it properly and says “Totoro”, when she’s these creatures, she thinks they are are “trolls” and calls them “Totoro “
Omg YESSSS!!!😍😍 Totoro is one of my all time favorite comfort movies
吹替じゃなくオリジナル音源での鑑賞は好感持てる👍
I like the idea of seeing the film in its original soundtrack and not dubbed👍
Glad you got to see my favorite movie🥹🩷
Yes, I grew up watching Tonari no Totoro (My neighbour Totoro), it's of my favs from my childhood! Actually the Ghibli world was my childhood since I grew up not knowing about Disney, Looney Tunes or any cartoons of the west. This movie makes me so nostalgic 😍🥰
I had never seen Totoro and I always had it on my to-do list, it's good for practicing my english and it was good to see it with you guys, it was really fun and adorable movie, Sara i cried with you at all times lol
It's still a common sight in the countryside.
Large trees are enshrined and cool even in summer.
Merry Christmas to Sarah and Adam!
Sarah: I love the sound of little kids' feet running around.
Me: Not when you're alone in your room at night. That's terrifying.
😱😱
I was born in 1991. This film is accompanied by my growth. Now I will watch it again every other time. I like it so much.
Here I am having Monday blue already on a Sunday night, and now I get to watch Totoro with Sarah and Adam.
I’m healed😂
Nice😊 this is a nice surprise thank you. I Hope you have a Merry Christmas
¡¡¡¡Siiii, Totoro!!!! ❤ Amo esta película 😊 me encantó que les haya gustado y la hayan disfrutado, es un clásico precioso 🥰
Oh how nice!! I haven't watched many Studio Ghilbi movies (a great sin, i know, I am just not great at watching movies in general), but this one i luckly know!
I actually wanted to watch this specific movie as a kid but couldn't bc of various reasons, and then never got around to it until VERY recently! What great timing this reaction had 😊
I'll be sure to check this out soon, though I can't do that right now. Thank you so much for all your work!!! Stay safe, i hope you have a great 2025 ahead of you!!
My Neighbor Totoro was released in 1988, almost 40 years ago.
So glad you guys are going through the Ghibli collection, maybe Porco Rosso next?😊
If you want to know the coolest pig of all time, I recommend "Porco Rosso" 😉
Thank you for watching Totoro. This is my favorite work. What's great is that all of this work is hand-painted. There is warmth in all the scenery. When I was a child, I went to the nearby mountains to look for Totoro😂
😍😍😍 so lovely everything in this movie.
I saw this movie at 7, Gypsy's movies were my childhood.
"My Neighbor Totoro" (Tonari no Totoro) by Hayao Miyazaki is set in rural post-war Japan. While it does not directly depict the drama of the reconstruction period after the defeat (as seen in "Grave of the Fireflies"), and the tone of the story is one of optimism and innocence, there is a fundamental scene with a hidden message I didn’t realize until I had watched the film several times.
Remember the moment when Satsuki and Mei see the big Totoro and the smaller Totoros performing a ceremonial dance next to a seedbed?
The girls join them, and suddenly, a cluster of trees begins to sprout at incredible speed-bursting with color, vitality, and the triumphant force of nature.
However, the growing trees bear a striking resemblance to the mushroom cloud of an atomic explosion-death and destruction.
I don’t think this is a coincidence, as Miyazaki is a staunch defender of nature, a humanist, and a pacifist.
I highly recommend watching Miyazaki’s entire filmography.
Since you guys love Mei so much in Totoro, I feel like you'll love watching Ponyo! It has that same child-like whimsy and wholesomeness 🥰
The English voice acting for Ponyo is phenomenal. And they must do it for the love of Cate Blanchett!!
24:00 In Western stories there is always an evil person who needs to be defeated. The Japanese can make stories without there being an evil person, just problems that need to be overcome.
42:55 A lot of fun stuff happened. What didn't happen was that monsters or aliens appeared in New York or there was a gigantic battle full of special effects.
During Ghibli films there is always extra scenes during and after the credits by the way. And with the English dubs there is always lyrical themes that connect most of the movies too. Even in Ponyo English dub the mother sings a song that’s from Totoro actually. Or something like that. ❤
This is the first Studio Ghibli movie I ever saw. It was in '93/'94, I was about six-ish. But it was the dub. And is a timeless, wholesome, feel good movie with very poignant moments and messages. I love this movie so much.
It was actually released as a double feature along with the movie Grave of the Fireflies. Which is a difficult movie to recommend to others. Not because it isn't amazing or worth watching, but maybe because it is very intense. It's a watch at your own risk movie.
For answering to your question, Satsuki is 10 years old.
Also, japansese childran are taught to be autonomous very young so they can take care of themselves when the parents aren't at home
Nice video ♥
We also recommend Porco Rosso 🛩
Wait this is amazing!! My neighbor Totoro is my fave of the studio ghibli collection! This is so ransom haha I didn't even get a notification i just wanted to make sure I didn't miss an upload and saw this upload xD well Hope you guys enjoy other of the Ghibli films as well
I honestly love the idea of a chill local deity so much
宮崎監督は「トトロは神に近い存在だから、何も考えていないように描け」とスタッフに指示しました。
The flying in the air scene near the end gave Mary Poppins vibes❓✨😭
totoro is probably the ONE movie that doesn't really have a conflict xD i can understand why you would be so puzzled. it's really uncommon
I love this movie so bad you have no idea, I been watching it since I was a kid and I even had a plushie of Totoro growing up, I lost it and I’m so MAD 😭, my favorite of the Gibli movies is still Ponyo but this one will forever be in my heart
1:23:28 It’s partially autobiographical. Hayao Miyazaki’s mother, when he was a child, was confined due to spinal tuberculosis.
I hope you'll continue with the ghibli movies!! I love Totoro but my fav ghibli movie is Howls Moving Castle!
oh please watch the castle in the sky🙏🏻🙏🏻😭😭
Can you guys watch and react to Frieren: Beyond the Journey Ends? It has slow pacing in the beginning, but the story is good, you'll love it
I think the mother has Tuberculosis, not exactly a nice thing to have in the 1930s or so where this seems to be set in. They're moving out from Tokyo's city area to a more rural and cleaner air place for the mother has always been my understanding. I live near where the movie takes place, its about a 60 min train and bus ride to center Tokyo, I don't think it would change too much even back then so, daddy has to take an 1 to 1.5 hour train ride into Tokyo to do his university work.
Recommendation
”LAPUTA: Castle in the Sky”
”Kiki's Delivery Service"
The best reaction to movies!
It's normal in Japan for families to bathe together when the children are small, but Westerners find it weird. It's weird that Western culture views its young children in this way.The reason why Westerners have such questions is because they look at children that way. If Westerners didn't look at children weirdly, such questions wouldn't even arise. Western culture is weird
Honestly, I didn't find it weird because I'm french but I used to take showers with my parents when I was too young for cleaning myself alone
Hahaha, being an artist who knows a bit about animation, comparing this to Demon Slayer feels almost like an insult! Not bc Demon Slayer's animation is bad quality, not at all, but because Ghibli's movies are so amazing lol Demon Slayer works on a TV budget - and so they reasonably cut corners and save their founds for big jaw droping fight sequences. In Totoro it would be hard to find scenes which are animated "easy" way. Everything, down to the backgrounds that are full of life in a way TV series just can't usually afford, is crafted with love and utmost attention to details ♥
「もののけ姫」もいいぞ!
ジブリの作品では1番好き
If you guys are into the cute ghibli theme, I suggest ponyo! One of my favourites
Please come to Japan.
You will understand the world of Totoro if you feel the wind and the landscape of shrines and the Japanese countryside!
you will understand the world of Totoro!
omg u guys!!!!!! u must watch/listen the neighbor totoro bit from joe hisaishi’s (the studio’s main music composer!) concert for the studio’s 25th anniversary! it’s on yt from like 01:31:00 part, it’s so magical I cry everytime 🥹✨✨✨
With every movie we get closer to my favorite, Princess Mononoke. Luckily they're all good.
It's crazy to me how such a wholesome story was actually inspired by a real murder... at least in this one, it's a happy ending 🥲
🥰 i love it, Kiki's delivery service next please
totoro just 🥱like Totoro
Mei thought that is his name😂
Notice at 1:36:40, there were "Taishat%‡", "tomb passage
墓道","Three mounds三之塚",
which makes me believe the cat bus is well-loved by all kinds of spiritual exists, gods, dieties, guardian spirits, ghosts...
とても楽しいビデオでした!「風の谷のナウシカ」も是非!!ジブリの最初の作品です。
「Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind」PLEASE!!!
Good reaction anothers interesting anime movies is "Omoide no Marnie" and "Summer Ghost"
They reallly need to check out the English dub versions of those. I swear the level of OOMPH put into the dubs were so much more… how to say. They carried the vibes of the movies so much better and seamlessly blended with the music a lot better to in their edits. All star cast as well with their giant collaborative efforts from easts to west with all Ghibli films. ❤
If you liked this, „Kiki‘s Delivery service“ might be up your alley as well. It has a little bit more drama, but is still a very wholesome movie.
I’m telling you now they’ll love it in the English dub as those voice actors are super beloved and seasoned. They did great work with Ghibli studio for all their films. ❤
It's my second time watching Totoro and I feel that the first time I didn't enjoyed it a lot maybe because I was expecting something more like Spirited Away 🤔 But this time I was smiling watching the movie and listening your comments 🙌🏼
As you show us the poll, I might have to recommend you to ad Howl's Moving Castle the next time you decide to watch another movie, for me and my girlfriend it's our favourite Ghibli film 👀
ooh did you see Howl's moving castle yet? I'd love to watch you see it.
I'm glad you two described the film as wholesome. I agree! But, historically, some Westerners have freaked out over the scene where the girls and the father were naked in the bath together
As a child, I also thought those were gold teeth when I first saw them lmao
