Sarah's beloved boy Haku was voiced by Haikyuu's Suga when he was young. Spoiler alert The scene where Chihiro is crying and eating rice balls is the same animator who was in charge of the scene in Haikyuu where everyone cried and ate in the cafeteria when Karasuno lost in the battle against Aoba Josai.
Aaaa I knew it!!! It looks EXACTLY the same and I didn’t know why, I just thought it was inspired. I didn’t know his voice was baby Irino-san though, that’s amazing.
If Sarah thinks Haku's eyes are to die for, I wonder how she'll feel when she sees Howl lol and yes this is my shameless way to tell you guys to watch Howl's moving castle next 😂
Predicting that the "stink spirit" was cursed by "someone" is very ironic once you realize that the "someone" is us. That is, modern industrial society that dumps junk in rivers, as this stinky blob is a river spirit that we have polluted with all that garbage. (Note a similar garbage scene in the ocean in another Ghibli movie, "Ponyo"). Remember, Miyazaki is very concerned about two things: flying and environmentalism. Here we see his concern for environmentalism on full display. I won't mention any more spoilers, but there is at one more commentary on our harm to the natural resources and the environment in the big reveal near the end of the movie where we learn why Haku remembers Chihiro's name and who Haku really is. Can't wait to see your reaction to it.
In Japan, there is an old tradition that if you eat food from another world, you will not be able to return to this world, so Chihiro's parents broke this taboo.
I heard that it was also a thing in Angola, but it was that you shouldn't eat food if offered to you in a dream. That's also the tea of forgetfulness that you have to drink to pass on the next life in all my Chineses fantasy dramas haha It's such a repeated thing in so many different cultures that I am starting to believe in it lol
There is also the myth in ancient China that eating the food you use for offerings will result in a punishment from the gods, the punishment may not be put directly on you but it may affect the people around you
Sarah: "Did you see how some force was sucking things in?" Adam: "Its called the wind." *Sarah deadpan glares at Adam* You two always manage to crack me up. 💙
Sarah, you've probably seen lots of characters and imagery from this movie because it is a very famous movie! With lots of very famous character. Even if youve never seen Spirited Away theres a huge chance you saw stuff from this movie, its everywhere.
Woah, this is a massive undertaking! Props to Adam, Sarah, and Lydia for tackling a feature-length film reaction. Going to watch this once the weekend rolls around
Late to this reaction but the spirited away characters show up all over the place out of context, it's kind of like recognising ghibli's totoro even if you've never seen my neighbour totoro! so considering how well traveled you guys are and that sarah likes anime to begin with, it's totally expected for you to recognise a lot of the characters here 😂❤
OHHHH THAT'S LOVELY. there's definitely a lot of folklore in this but i hope you have fun. I get emotional seein how scared Chihiro was in the beginning and how strong she became.
Aaah such a lovely video to wake up to!! Spirited Away is a masterpiece and one of my all-time favorite movies from childhood. The music alone is absolutely incredible. Thank you guys lots for reacting to it! A small thing, but the subtitles where Haku tells Chihiro to demand a job from Kamaji are wrong; he was talking about getting a job from Yubaba from the start (and Kamaji himself said that everyone needs to sign a contract with her anyway).

He is the spirit of radish, a vegetable, and protects agriculture, horses, people's houses and eyes. He is also a kind of grandfather-like spirit who loves children, playing with them and babysitting them while the family concentrates on farm work, and is very trusted by people because of his calm and serene personality. Looking at the behavior of this child-loving and gentle sprit, it is clear that he immediately realizes that Chihiro is lost when she sees a child who should be in the human world, alone and separated from her parents, being accompanied by an employee who is a frog incarnate, walking around the inn. This sprit thought, "I am not the owner of this place, so as a guest I will respect and follow the policies and rules of this inn. But I want to help her to the best of my ability." If there's a bad kid who likes to be lazy, or a liar, or a tease, or violent, we'll peel their skin off. Namahage exclaims. The children are often startled by their sudden arrival and begin to cry, but the Japanese parents stand firmly in front of them and say, "I have been a good boy or girl for a year. They are urged by their Japanese parents to say, "I have been a good boy or girl for a year. I think your impressions are very accurate and that you are deeply receptive to the message of this film. I have watched this film repeatedly and your feedback is most interesting. Thank you for playing in the imagination of the film and taking it seriously. Listening to your opinions is like having a conversation with a friend.
I remember watching this a few times when I was a kid, and it left such a huge impact on me. It was just so completely different from anything else I'd seen before. I'm really glad both of you are enjoying it
Studio Ghibli went beastmode on this one 💯🔥🔥 Not exactly a spooky one, but it has an uniquely unnerving yet hopeful vibe that sets this movie apart and made it a classic ^^ You two are too funny though as always lmao
What a surprise! A whole anime movie reaction with you two and especially THIS one! I've always loved your insights and little back stories from your sports career. The Zhejiang river fish anecdote is just hilarious. The Yubaba/Yermama reaction also cracked me up. You guys are just soo sweet and funny, I'm all for it❤️ I would really love to see you guys react to more Miyazaki movies, they're really the must-sees of Japanese movies.
Recently discovered your Haikyuu reactions and love seeing you two get into anime movie reactions. Can't wait to see what other movies you react to in the future. I feel like you would both really enjoy the film Kimi No Na Wa (Your Name).
This is one of the few animated movies my parents will watch because of the artistic quality of it. The gorgeous rich scenery. absolutely always one of my top ten films of all time.
Sarah, Ghibli movies are extremely popular, you could have seen some of the very iconic characters even at your mall or supermarket sometimes, like a limited time event something, or on the internet, especially, that you are more and more involved with animes. The guy in the black with the facemask is one of the most iconic figure from this film, and you probably would know some others as well from other Ghibli movies, because they are indeed everywhere, even if you did not hear where are they from! I cannot wait for the part two, ALSO ALSO ALSO, Sarah, Adam, if you are enjoying watching anime movies time to time, like for Halloween, or for Christmas maybe, or something like that, I would recommend you to watch YOUR NAME next time, which is a fairly new anime movie, but just as good as this one! Also, there is a movie called Silent Voice or Wanna Eat your Pancreas, that are also very good. I'm sure others will recommend other Ghibli movies as well. I hope we can see it sometime, as the both of you enjoying something like this. (Especially if it is this lenghty, I love long videos. :P)
My favorite anime movie and one of my top 10 favorite movies overall - maybe even top 5. Seeing someone trying to figure out Spirited Away in real time is really fun. I remember being left kinda confused when I watched it for the first time, back when I was 15, but I felt so enthralled by it that it didn't bother me. Many rewatches and discussions later, I keep finding new things to appreciate about it. Can't wait for part 2, and hope to see more reactions to anime movies on this channel!
Yes please! More anime reactions with Sarah and Adam! You’ve both become my favourite anime reactors, the pauses aren’t annoying, your thoughts and guesses are insightful & intelligent (and very funny). Also love the energy levels from both of you, it isn’t over the top, feels genuine, just enough Sarah-hype + Adam-calmness for me at the end of a work day. Also really appreciate the editing (with Japanese audio loud enough and show-image without transparency) that makes it easy to follow your reactions. Can you tell I’m buttering you guys up (with truths nonetheless) in hopes that you will both react to more anime? Sincerely, a request from all of us who’ve you made smile with your reaction videos.
yall should absolutely watch the dubs for ghibli films if you watch any more theyre the only anime dubs i can stand by and theyre honestly the best watch for these movies
In Japanese Shintoism, each beautiful and majestic natural feature such as rivers, waterfalls, mountains, oceans, large rocks, and large trees are believed to be inhabited by gods. The spirit that Sen saved took the form of an old man's mask. Used in the traditional ancient Japanese performance of Noh, it is often a symbol of knowledge, wisdom, dignity, and compassion. The identity of the stinky spirit is that of an ancient and majestic deity, and also that of a part of nature that has been polluted with trash by people who have forgotten to respect it.
In Japan, it is believed that gods reside in various places such as mountains and rivers. The scene in the bath shows that the god's place has been polluted with human things.
This movie is based on the mythology of Tokoyo, which is on the same plane as our world and the gods/spirits that govern nature go to this place to take a break, because with the spirits they explained how it worked. It is very complex and many things are based on the director's own experience, for example, when he was young he went with his community to clean a river and among other things he took a bicycle out of the mud, from people's garbage or maybe it was later of a flood, I don't remember the anecdote well but it reflects the scene in the movie
18:28 hey I’m from china and feel responsible for correcting that Zhejiang province is actually coastal(well the city you were staying in may not, province is quite a large district and Zhejiang is approximately the size of South Korea ), and Zhejiang is south to Shanghai (very close tho). I’m a huge fan of your channel ❤❤can’t wait to see more
This movie IS iconic so there's gifsets and merchandise and references alllllll over the place. Even in western animation but especially in anime. Not to mention that these characters themselves are also based off of Japanese mythology so even if you hadn't seen these ones in particular, you've probably seen the things they're based off of, and/or seen other things based off those same things lol.
It's one of my favorite anime also i love My neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, and When Marnie was here. People throw their trash in the forest and that's why forest spirit become so dirty and stinky. Those ducks and other personages are from Japan's ghost (yokai) folklore, so you can see them everywhere. Ghibli created many beautiful anime, music is beautiful too
Was brought here after watching your Haikyuu reactions! Love that you two are doing a reaction to Spirited Away for Halloween. It's one of my favourite Studio Ghibli films. It's not surprising if you recognize the characters in this movie. The movie itself is critically acclaimed and has won academy awards for best animated film when it came out. A lot of the characters have memorabilia, merch and references in pop culture, so it isn't surprising if you've seen them lying around somewhere. I'm not sure if you've figured it out yet, but the 'stink spirit' is actually the spirit of a really old, large river (assumed by the fact that Yubaba treats him with lots of respect as a paying customer) and its gotten dirty/'cursed' by the amount of filth and garbage that gets dumped into it. In Japanese folklore a lot of the gods and spirits are generally personifications of something - like the white radish spirit that helped Chihiro at the beginning. Also, while Lin looks very human, she's not, though I can't remember what specific kind of spirit she is.
I haven't watched it yet but, you should do one movie for each season of anime or bimonthly or monthly session, btw there are some anime movies i loved like your name, silent voice, and other ghibli movie. Yeah i just gave you some tearing sad anime movies.
This movie was very impactful and iconic for a lot of people, so I find it very likely you have seen a lot of stills/characters/animations from it, without seeing the movie before.
⚠️It's very long No face is a very meaningful character. There are many ways to interpret it. Here are my opinions bathhouse - the materialistic world If bathhouse is a portrayal of the current society we live in, where materialism is rampant and money is paramount, then why is our portrayal not No Face? No face - no ego. In that world, he was an unnoticed person. He was on the bridge every day, watching people coming and going, and he would even suspect that no one had spoken to him before he met Sen. Therefore, in that world, he is a lonely and lost person. Perhaps, if he had never met Sen, he would have always existed in the world of bathhouse No face changed because he met Sen. Whether he changed in bathhouse or later found a home with Zeniba, it was his change. Maybe Sen's kindness is very different in the bathhouse, or maybe there is no reason at all, No face likes (or just cares about) Sen. No face is just like us, it becomes good in a good environment and becomes bad in a bad environment. Enter the bathhouse and get lost in the world of money, opportunism, profit-seeking, madness, and stinginess. Because he could turn gold, everyone in the bathhouse gathered around him, and he became crazy, arrogant, and unscrupulous. But when he saw Sen, he suddenly became shy and docile. He no longer had the temper of the nouveau riche, and he could only stutter out a few words from his mouth. "I'll give you all my gold." He didn't know what Sen needed, but he simply thought that if he took out the gold, Sen would like it. This time, he was still rejected. Then he became even crazier, eating unscrupulously and losing himself more and more. In the private room, after Sen arrived, he suddenly became docile. He found an untouched plate among a lot of delicious food and timidly handed it to Sen, "Here you go, this is delicious." All he got in exchange was "What I want, you can't give it to me." She gave him the river god's meatballs. He began to vomit, spitting out all his desires and vanity, and returned to his original self. No face is a metaphor for human desire. Rather, it is more like a mirror, reflecting the atmosphere of people in the space. The little frogs who pursue worldly desires and the flattering hospitality are all eaten by No face, which is a warning to us that desire can devour people. Some people say: "No face dares to work hard for his love." Unfortunately, love cannot be obtained through hard work. No face may be a cute secret admirer, but he is definitely not a successful suitor. He only knew how to give all of himself for love, but he paid it all to the wrong place. There are many people in the world who are willing to give everything to the person they like, but still cannot be favored by the person they like. Maybe this is the reason. Such a great character !
Just about every Ghibli film is a masterpiece. I also suggest Castle in the Sky, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Tales From Earthsea, Princess Mononoke, and Kiki's Delivery Service.
Sarah's beloved boy Haku was voiced by Haikyuu's Suga when he was young.
Spoiler alert
The scene where Chihiro is crying and eating rice balls is the same animator who was in charge of the scene in Haikyuu where everyone cried and ate in the cafeteria when Karasuno lost in the battle against Aoba Josai.
I was thinking about that!!!! I was like "it reminds me of that episode" now I know why!
hi! thanks for the fun fact! maybe you should put a spoiler warning. Adam reads comments here.
Someone please pin this comment!
Aaaa I knew it!!! It looks EXACTLY the same and I didn’t know why, I just thought it was inspired. I didn’t know his voice was baby Irino-san though, that’s amazing.
WOW!! Thanks for this insight!! haha

I concur 🙏

It’s sad but true. It’s a really interesting way to draw attention to the issue.
In Japan, there is an old tradition that if you eat food from another world, you will not be able to return to this world, so Chihiro's parents broke this taboo.
Same in many cultures too :) the myth of persephone and hades had the same taboo of eating something from the underworld
It's common thing in stories about Fae too, if you eat the food of their land you'll be trapped.
There is also the myth in ancient China that eating the food you use for offerings will result in a punishment from the gods, the punishment may not be put directly on you but it may affect the people around you
Sarah: "Did you see how some force was sucking things in?"
Adam: "Its called the wind."
*Sarah deadpan glares at Adam*
You two always manage to crack me up. 💙
Ghibli movies are not predictable, they throw you into a completely different world, in this full of folklore. But that’s what makes the magic!
That was one of the things that I loved about this movie. I never knew what was going to happen next, but it all tied together.
Sarah, you've probably seen lots of characters and imagery from this movie because it is a very famous movie! With lots of very famous character. Even if youve never seen Spirited Away theres a huge chance you saw stuff from this movie, its everywhere.

The characters in this film are referenced all the time, even in Western pop culture, which is probably why Sarah recognizes many of them.
or shes seen merchandise or cosplays
I love your banter. It reminds me of watching anime with my friends years ago.
Sarah please I'm checking every day for part 2 😂 I can't wait any longeeer
いつ見てもリンは言葉は厳しいけどちゃんと礼儀を教えてるんだよな。
返事をする、挨拶をする、お礼を言う
たったそれだけの当たり前のことだけど、千尋はそれが出来てない。

Ngl, if I was Chihiro there would have been three pigs and the rest of the movie would be a montage of pigs in a pen. 😂
Btw, Lydia used the ducks in her haikyu editing
Very cute!
What a cute choice for Halloween, what a nice couple to see as always!

thank you for giving us some context!
Wow, thank you for taking the time to give this insight. I personally love getting the cultural context around the different elements.
Ahh yess, ghibli films are the must-watch for everyone who want to watch a masterpiece anime. ❤
I think your impressions are very accurate and that you are deeply receptive to the message of this film.
I have watched this film repeatedly and your feedback is most interesting.
Thank you for playing in the imagination of the film and taking it seriously.
Listening to your opinions is like having a conversation with a friend.
couple chilling to watch a movie it nice and cute
I recommend almost every Ghibli movie tbh. They're all classics. All of the ones that were directed by Hayao Miyazaki are great.
I remember watching this a few times when I was a kid, and it left such a huge impact on me. It was just so completely different from anything else I'd seen before. I'm really glad both of you are enjoying it
Studio Ghibli went beastmode on this one 💯🔥🔥
Not exactly a spooky one, but it has an uniquely unnerving yet hopeful vibe that sets this movie apart and made it a classic ^^ You two are too funny though as always lmao
I can't just stop thinking about Sara sayin "like yo mama, yubaba" xD
What a surprise! A whole anime movie reaction with you two and especially THIS one! I've always loved your insights and little back stories from your sports career. The Zhejiang river fish anecdote is just hilarious. The Yubaba/Yermama reaction also cracked me up. You guys are just soo sweet and funny, I'm all for it❤️
I would really love to see you guys react to more Miyazaki movies, they're really the must-sees of Japanese movies.
Recently discovered your Haikyuu reactions and love seeing you two get into anime movie reactions. Can't wait to see what other movies you react to in the future. I feel like you would both really enjoy the film Kimi No Na Wa (Your Name).
Omg with Adam! Best surprise ever!
This is one of the few animated movies my parents will watch because of the artistic quality of it. The gorgeous rich scenery. absolutely always one of my top ten films of all time.
Sarah’s probably just seen all the Ghibli merch before haha
oh man it's been years since i've watched the entire movie, this is such a treat XD
can't wait for part two
You have to be very carefull with Ghibli movies, they are well know for strike down reactors.
Guess that means we better watch it RIGHT NOW 😃
Sarah, Ghibli movies are extremely popular, you could have seen some of the very iconic characters even at your mall or supermarket sometimes, like a limited time event something, or on the internet, especially, that you are more and more involved with animes. :P)
OmG!!! I’ve never thought about this but YES!
YESSSS one of the best movies ever made
THE BOY ADAM GONNA BE WATCHING OTHER ANIME?
UNEXPECTED PLOT TWIST.
LET'S GOOOOOOOOO
Omg so fun! I never thought of Spirited Away as that spooky but it does have scary moments. So happy you did this and welcome to the anime side Adam!
The intro is perfect, I love it! Can't wait to watch this!
What a suprise! love it!
OH MY GOD I JUST SEEN THIS UPLOADED AND IM SO FRIGGIN STOKED
Wooden skull’s bathing scene is satisfying
Yaaaayyyy!!!
This is definitely a classic 🤩
Really love seeing you guys ❤
1 hour and 44min passed so quickly! Love you guys
yall should absolutely watch the dubs for ghibli films if you watch any more

Wasn’t expecting this reaction. Love the energy!!
what a lovely surprise! thanks you two!
This is so fun to watch!!
Omg I’m gonna go watch spirited away just so I can watch this reaction, I can’t wait!
49:05 because Sarah has a very good memory! It's amazing!
Thanks Sarah! This is my favorite Ghibli movie of all time :)
❤ omg i hope you watch more ghibli films!
can"t wait the next part
So happy to seeing you two again! just watched you a few hours ago with Haikyuu. 🥰
Howl's Moving Castleのリアクションも見たいです🤩
if this gets taken down id be willing to watch from a paid site!
I'm not sure what I enjoy more the reactions or the stories that accompany the reactions 😂❤ you guys are great
the squeal i just let out when i saw this video on my yt home page, spirited away is one of my fav ghibli movies!
In Japan, it is believed that gods reside in various places such as mountains and rivers. The scene in the bath shows that the god's place has been polluted with human things.
This is great!
This movie is based on the mythology of Tokoyo, which is on the same plane as our world and the gods/spirits that govern nature go to this place to take a break, because with the spirits they explained how it worked.
It is very complex and many things are based on the director's own experience, for example, when he was young he went with his community to clean a river and among other things he took a bicycle out of the mud, from people's garbage or maybe it was later of a flood, I don't remember the anecdote well but it reflects the scene in the movie
the flilthy spirit represents what human has done to the earth as in the environmentalism context (pollution etc)
18:28 hey I’m from china and feel responsible for correcting that Zhejiang province is actually coastal(well the city you were staying in may not, province is quite a large district and Zhejiang is approximately the size of South Korea ), and Zhejiang is south to Shanghai (very close tho). I’m a huge fan of your channel ❤❤can’t wait to see more
The movie that got me into anime❤
見てくれてありがとうございます🥰
Thank you for watching Ghibli!!🥰
Omg plz come to Nanjing with Adam!I would love to see u guys in person❤
Ironically some station in asia especially china are really big lol
I freaking love this movie so much
i really hope you are doing other ghibli movies too because your reactions are amazing
When will be part 2?
This is my favorite ❤
This movie IS iconic so there's gifsets and merchandise and references alllllll over the place. Even in western animation but especially in anime. Not to mention that these characters themselves are also based off of Japanese mythology so even if you hadn't seen these ones in particular, you've probably seen the things they're based off of, and/or seen other things based off those same things lol.
"Deadlift!!" 😂😂😂
No wayyyyyy
React to " Your Name"
Love from Portugal Sarah ❤
Haku is in my Love House foreeeeeeeeever (if I have one) So excited to see you react to this movie!
Even Indiana Jones wouldn't hike in the jungle at night
It's one of my favorite anime also i love My neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, and When Marnie was here.
People throw their trash in the forest and that's why forest spirit become so dirty and stinky. Those ducks and other personages are from Japan's ghost (yokai) folklore, so you can see them everywhere. Ghibli created many beautiful anime, music is beautiful too
"double fisting chickens" im dead lmao xD
Okayyyy that "Stink Spirit" info makes a lot of sense! Thanks!
That’s really interesting.
這真的是完全真實的反應影片,看你們一直猜錯很有趣
One of my favorite movies ever!
I haven't watched it yet but, you should do one movie for each season of anime or bimonthly or monthly session, btw there are some anime movies i loved like your name, silent voice, and other ghibli movie. Yeah i just gave you some tearing sad anime movies.
This movie was very impactful and iconic for a lot of people, so I find it very likely you have seen a lot of stills/characters/animations from it, without seeing the movie before.
lol Sarah was trash talking Yubaba before she even met her.
@24:00 Sarah’s gag at this scene got me rolling 😂
HAKU…my first crush 😂
⚠️It's very long
No face is a very meaningful character. There are many ways to interpret it. Here are my opinions
bathhouse - the materialistic world
If bathhouse is a portrayal of the current society we live in, where materialism is rampant and money is paramount, then why is our portrayal not No Face?
No face - no ego.
In that world, he was an unnoticed person. He was on the bridge every day, watching people coming and going, and he would even suspect that no one had spoken to him before he met Sen.
Therefore, in that world, he is a lonely and lost person.
Perhaps, if he had never met Sen, he would have always existed in the world of bathhouse
No face changed because he met Sen.
"I'll give you all my gold."
He didn't know what Sen needed, but he simply thought that if he took out the gold, Sen would like it. This time, he was still rejected. Then he became even crazier, eating unscrupulously and losing himself more and more.
In the private room, after Sen arrived, he suddenly became docile. He found an untouched plate among a lot of delicious food and timidly handed it to Sen, "Here you go, this is delicious."
All he got in exchange was "What I want, you can't give it to me." She gave him the river god's meatballs.
When is part 2 ? 🥹
