  • Matthew takes you through some of the nuances of the various years of wiring harness in EFI Foxbody Mustangs, and shows you how to identify which harness components you have. The focus is on the Computer and Body harnesses, which are the two most important harnesses in the car. Subjects include visual identification as well as electrical continuity identification, and which harnesses can be used together.

A wealth of knowledge. Thank you.

You're welcome. I don't think this is a definitive guide, but there should be enough here to let you figure out what year of harnesses you are dealing with. I spent two weeks looking at the harness on Bad Decision, and I finally concluded that the EFI harness in the car was actually one that had been in an airbag Mustang, and then stripped down to a speed density type harness, except it still included the airbag connectors. I turfed for another harness, because who knows that all was done to the one that was in the car?

Very informative and going to be absolutely useful when I start on my '92 ProjectGirl. Did go check and she has the mid 92-93 engine harness.
Don't know if you remember but mentioned to you before that I bought her Dec 24 '22 and only driven her maybe 15 miles total, but got her out the other day and drove her couple miles down the road to the gas station and it hit me hard! I love this Fox and ha e got to get my butt in gear and get her fixed and reliable enough to daily drive.
I've got more in New parts and all the diagnostic tools and just bought and ordered the Innova (I believe what it's called, the same one KASL did a video on) and it she be hear in a couple days or so. I just need to make time for her.
Sorry so long but your videos, specially this one is and has got me excited along with about all the diagnostic books I've got, I should have her back to original shape and get rid of the racer wanna-be parts they've throwed together and on her so me and the wife can get out and enjoy cruising and taking on the trips from time to time we go on.
Thank You Sir, always love and get alot out of your videos and wait for more that will help me with my ProjectGirl.

I'm glad its helping you. I figured that a wiring harness video would not be a world beater view-wise, but it seems like an important tech resource that needs to be out there. A project like Bad Decision could certainly benefit from this type of video it it was in the hands of someone less experienced.

This is great info to document, thank you! Very useful for my '89 V8 swap.

You are welcome. A V8 swap on these cars can be a real minefield if you don’t know what you are doing with the wiring!

Wiring is one of the most frustrating parts of these cars, and typically one if the most savaged parts of them.

Just picked up a 90 notch back that was poorly swapped. Trying to get everything working right. what engine harness and body harness should it have to work right? I was told the motor was from a 95 mustang.

You will need a dash harness and engine harness that matches. Without looking at it, I would guess that it already has a 90 dash harness and you will have to get a 90 engine harness. 1990 is a unique setup though I personally saw a car the other day which is supposed to be a 1990 and had the late style dash connector, so there are some weird setups out there. Outside of this one questionable exception, every 1990 I have seen including my own late production 1990 coupe has the two engine to dash connectors and the airbag support. The 1995 harness is really different and probably not that easy to adapt to the 1990 dash harness. Good luck with it.

Working on a 84 fox with a T5 and 302 from a 90 that i put into it, what harness would i need?

You might get it to run with almost any Mustang 5.0 engine harness, but you will have issues with the ancillary connections no matter what - there are no 5.0 EFI harnesses which will connect right up to your dash harness. I have a friend with a similar 4-eye that is running but he didn’t do the work and I have not looked closely at what done. Obviously it CAN be done though.

Hey man, just started working on my 87 lx project and I have the efi harness I’m trying to replace but I can’t find any removal videos on TH-cam, any tips on how to remove the harness and connect a new one back on? I have the dash removed just need to remove the harness.

If you disconnect the pcm and a couple connectors down by the kick panel. You can pry the big firewall grommet out into the engine bay and just pull it out. You have to unplug it where it connects to the dash harness at the drivers firewall area, then just disconnect all the plugs on the engine and you can remove it. Watch for places it is clipped to the body and any connectors you missed. All of it just unplugs.
