When it comes to video games we often speak about things like gameplay, visuals, characters, story and soundtrack. The goal of this series is to talk about the smaller, less obvious things that come together to really elevate your experience of a game. The first of these videos starts of course with my favourite game, Final Fantasy X. It's time to celebrate the little things... Please share your favourite little things in the comments too!

I have made a similar piece for Metal Gear Solid 3, one of the greatest games of the PS2 era in my opinion. Check it out here: goo.gl/BAxfFK - I will be making more of these videos for games like The Last Of Us and Bioshock in the future, please subscribe so you don't miss it!

Hey man. What's wrong with Blitz? Lol. Freaking love Blitzball.
      Tidus
      Linna
      Tatts
      Wedge
      Ropp
If they can even manage to get a shot off and you don't want to wait for Nimrook.
      Get Miyu.
When Miyu becomes a crap goalie late - Wedge becomes the second best keeper in the game from what I've seen.
I love Blitz. Mastered beating Luca too.

Here's one little thing I really appreciate:
When you first leave the town in Besaid, you get into a bunch of tutorial battles where they tell you what characters to use on what enemies, and inform you when you're not using the right characters on the enemies. However, the wasps in that area (which they want you to take out with Wakka) are also vulnerable to magic. And Lulu has a unique voice line when she slays one.
    "Ah, magic. Sweet, sweet magic."

one of my favorite little things comes near the beginning of the game, and ties into the brotherhood thing. But I just really like that you can choose whether or not to pray for a safe journey alongside Wakka before leaving the island, especially with that little backstory on how Chappu forgot to pray the day he left, and I don't know, it always made me feel just a little more immersed in the story and the world.
Also on the Spiran script thing, I think one of the most interesting examples is Baaj Temple, where there are barely legible, often misspelled writings scrawled all over the floor and the walls. Deciphering them from Spiran script reveals that they were all written by Seymour many years ago during his childhood in exile there. Most appear to be exercises and practice geared towards learning how to write. It's a neat little detail that again just adds a little more cohesion to the story elements.

Yes! The Zanarkand theme playing through the battles of that section COMPLETELY changed the mood from any other area in the game. It gave me this melancholy "pushing forward" sense, regardless of whatever gets in the way now. It hits me every time I get to that area in the story.

I love the background on why Oaka and Wantz want to help Yuna so much. There's the scene in Luca near the sphere theatre where Oaka explains, and it's just so sad, but also getting a little glimpse of why they do what they do: they couldn't save her, but they can do everything they can to help another summoner who looks a bit like her (a little parallel to the Tidus/Chappu resemblance).
I also loved when you're fighting the Aeons on Jecht's sword, if you have a weapon with sensor on it, each Aeon will either say goodbye in some way, or encourage you in the fight. They know how awful it is, and even possessed, they want to help and encourage Yuna especially.
Last thing: once you have the airship, you can revisit the temples and talk to each fayth. Each of their chambers has some goodies, usually attribute spheres, but the coolest thing is they'll appear in their human forms, and give either background, or hints for the future (Should the dreaming end, you too will disappear...fade into Spira's sea, Spira's sky. ... Let us summon a sea in a new dream world. A new sea for you to swim...."
    All the feels.

A couple little things I remember enjoying off the top of my head:
    - While you're escaping Macalania Temple after defeating Seymour for the first time, I remember seeing O'aka run out of the temple and use the save sphere to teleport out of the area. I always thought that was so cool because it's the only time in the game where someone other than Tidus actually acknowledges the save spheres which really adds a level of immersion to the game. Also it's a hilarious scene. (It happens in real time as you run out of the temple)
    - Continuing on the theme of choices you can make through dialogue options in the game, there's one right before the start of operation Mi'hen where Gatta complains about having to serve guard duty instead of being in the front lines. You have the option of telling him he should just follow orders, or agree that he should be able to fight. If you choose the latter, Gatta actually ends up dying and you see a cutscene of luzzu freaking out in grief at djose temple. The other option is vice versa where luzzu dies and gatta has a similar scene at the temple. It's an extremely dark cause and effect and adds a lot more weight the tragedy that was Operation Mi'hen.
There's plenty others, these are just two that come to mind for me.

It really drives home the prevailing sadness that the characters feel while traveling through the ruins. While they fight, they are still thinking about what reaching the final aeon means. Before, they would concentrate on the battles, so the battle music would play. Now, however, "the end" is looming in their minds, so the sad music continues to play.

@@xmarindraco1815 Commonly this line quoted by some of the game's characters means that Sin always returns to the places where he left his "minions": either fiends or those scales that pop up and attack. See Operation Mi'hen where the crusaders try to take advantage of that phenomenon. But since Sin is Jekkt and he seems to particulary follow Tidus on several occasions this is true on a more literal level unbeknownst to the characters in the game, as Tidus is Jekkt's offspring or "spawn" if you will.

one of my favorite little things in this game is when yuna is sending auron, he only says one personal goodbye, rather than just the general goodbyes he's giving to tidus/everyone. as he passes kimahri, he reaches up and baps him on the chest. it's such a small moment but i really loved it, it spoke to a kind of affection and camaraderie that we didn't really see much of between them throughout the journey, and made me really wish we had gotten more of it.
but, as they reminded us frequently, it was tidus and yuna's story.

I think it's all too appropriate for it to be super silent and in the background. Neither of them would be the type to voice their feelings, even those of respect and admiration, aloud very often. It's silently understood between them, and the player gets just a few, humanizing glimpses of it. 👌

FFX have one of the most beautiful escenes of all times for me, how Yuna runs after Tidus when he said that he has to go. It breaks my heart everytime, but what makes this game a masterpiece for me is that even its a fantasy game, touchs topics like: The existence, how Tidus faces the fact that at the end, he will vanish, same as we all have to do. The religions: How they use people's fear and sadness to manipulate the information, The death: Spira, a spiral of sorrow and death, if u change the word spira for earth, still makes sence, and trust me, when you are 15 years old, that grew up without the love of your father, that is giving his first steps in romance and that ask yourself all kind of question, this game will simply support you like none other.

Story was probably the most meaningful, some of the best characters, beautiful soundtrack. Hard to say which is truly my favorite, I gotta say 7 is still my favorite for a few biased reason like the "First FF effect". Still has my favorite story though, best soundtrack by far. Neat things for me:
When you play as Seymour you can actually trigger an overdrive, so that’s pretty awesome.
You can return to the area you originally start the game at after your first interaction with Sin and defeat the boss you ran away from. Your reward is the Onion Knight weapon and the summon Anima.
The dialogue options in certain battles.
When the game splits up your party (Bikanel Island and Vía Infinito) where you have to find them and adapt your play style with whatever party members you find first.
Scouting Blitzball players that do NOT seem to be good but are actually nasty af.
Trying to overcome the monster arena.

  • @neliobelmont
    @neliobelmont 7 ปีที่แล้ว +33

My favorite touch in the game is the unique interactiona Yuna has with each Aeon when she summons them. Ifrit catches her, Yuna grabs Shiva's cloth, etc. The one I like the most is the look of horror on Yuna's face when summoning Anima though, it just says so much.
Where I am going with this is that the other summoners in the game lack any interaction at all when it shows them summoning. They just stand there perfectly still while the animation plays. Seymour at Luca is an execption to this since that's an FMV.
I really wish they had taken the to time to make individual interactions for all the other summoners as well in the few times we see them summon. To see Seymour gestering as as Anima rises up, Issamu giving Ixion a pat on his side, or even Lady Ginnem (Lulu's previous summoner) tossing Gil to Yojimbo.

There were so many funny scenes and funny dialog, the whole atmosphere was totally different compared to FF10. When you reach Spira for the first time, you are completley alone, there is only water and ruins. I felt so lost and I wondered if this really could be another Final Fantasy game. The whole atmosphere builds on these first moments in Spira. I had goosebumps everywhere and I think its wonderful that two games from the same merchandise can feel so totally different in so many ways and still both be great games that give you much to think about.
Second little thing would be the start of battles. I drank orangejuice when my first battle started and the breaking noise scared the crap out of me. I spat the juice everywhere. After that I had to laugh really hard so everytime a battle started I had a little grin on my face, remembering the first one :)

I feel like, for me personally, the most special thing about Brotherhood was that Wakka gifted it to Tidus because he knew he could trust him and already started growing a strong bond with Tidus. idk. It just speaks a lot of volume to me that so early on in our story he was so adamant on entrusting Tidus with something of such strong sentimental value. Part of me feels that Wakka considered Tidus his brother and that interpretation of their relationship ngl makes me emotional. I always think about that sequence, honestly. It's powerful.

What I, generally, love about Final Fantasy games is that they all seem connected somehow. For example the similar summons through the entire series (Shiva, Ifrit, Ramuh, Bahamut), similar monsters (cactuars, flans, coeurls, Iron giants, goblins), weapons (Masamune, Murasame, Ultima Sword) and names of characters or places.
Also love how Cid, Biggs and Wedge make their own little appearance in (almost) every game (although sometimes their appearance is obviously quite relevant for the story).
It's these things that make me smile all the time and that I appreciate the most. :)

It's actually been confirmed that FFX is a prequel to FFVII. Shinra from FFX-2 was studying extracting life energy from Spira. Years into the future, when Spirans eventually developed methods for space travel, they came to the planet of FFVII and supposedly implemented Shinra's ideas there, which led to the Shinra corporation and Mako extraction.

Wow I especially like the part about fighting the last battle on Jecht's sword, I never noticed that.
My favorite "little thing" about FFX has to be the difference in music in the BFA fight. The games music is almost all instrumental, melodic and ambient, then they hit you with some metal and electric guitar solos for the last fight. It's way too epic for, especially considering all the meaning behind that fight. Just so awesome

Just the way that guy is introduced alone....all hell breaks loose; big baddy crashes through the stand and looks menacingly at Auron...Auron shrugs and you get that fighting scene. First time I was like "oh shit...mini-boss to introduce auron..." *cracks knuckles*..... and then attack, Overkill, done and he simply walks on like the boss he is. I thought that made him BAMF enough as it were but then you find out his background story and man...no words...just; no words.

I think the main little thing that stood out for me when playing this game, was the very subtle smile on Kimahri's face after the Tidus/Yuna scene in Macalania, and especially in the original edition. (In the remaster it was much more prominent (in lack of a better word) and that kind of "ruined" it for me a little bit.) But that tiny smile on Kimahri's face, always puts a big smile on my face. :)

Your list hits home to many little tidbits I liked as well and even showed me some I never even knew or heard of such as the alphabet being true even on the cafe menu. One of my favorite tidbits is when you obtain the rusty sword and you return it back to its rightful place. Back in the days, I had no idea what to do with the rusty sword. After wandering around old areas, I was surprised to find out at Mushroom Rock Road that you return it back to the statue and I thought it was rather cool and strange that the sword traveled so far away from the statue.
Another one was Blitzball in which you can recruit members and let go of members. I remember the Al Bhed Psyches letting go on of their own players and I immediately signed him up on the team. I really liked how they let you do that instead of using only the default players. And when I won against the Psyches with one of their old players on the team, it made me imagine him being smug and saying that they regretted letting him go.

ffx is underrated when it comes to "secret"cutscenes that happen based on your level of affection or choices made.
Meanwhile ffx-2 is a clusterfuck with so many cutscenes depending on your choices and optional quest you did (even the order you did them) to the point where you need a guide to follow the perfect sequence of events.

I'm sad you didn't mention luzzu/gatta death in the dialogue choices. My 1 little thing I don't think anyone else mentioned, I noticed something when my girlfriend recently played that I missed during all of my playthroughs. When you're fighting your aeons in the end game, the sensor text that's displayed. Specifcally Sandy's “don't cry“and Anima's "thus I atone". That and yunas face after each defeated aeon hit me, I immediately felt yunas pain and knowing what was to come after the fight with Yevon it just makes her story so much more tragic and deep. Probably the simplest of things to list, but it went volumes for me.
    Valefor: "Strike me down."
    Ifrit: "Extinguish me."
    Ixion: "End it here."
    Shiva: "Please... defeat me."
    Bahamut: "Soon... eternal rest."
    Yojimbo: "Take my life."
    Anima: "Thus I atone."
    Cindy: "Stop the suffering."
    Sandy: "Don't cry."
    Mindy: "Gotta say goodbye."

    - Wantz. A guy that most people won't actually "know" during their first playthrough because, well, he's just "the creepy guy in blue" for the first half (mostly in the background after a few scenes) and, if you don't talk to O'Aka and learn about his brother, he's the surprise merchant at Gagazet of all things.^^ But there is a surprising amount of background about the three of them brothers/sister if you search a bit to trigger their cutscenes.
    - The ironic defeat of the Al Bhed Psyches against the Aurochs. Some people who did a bit of Blitzball know that their goalkeeper is a monster, from the get go, and is the best at end-level. But when asking how the Aurochs could even score against the Psyches, one would rewatch the scenes and notice that it's not Loumnik (said monster) letting the ball through. Maybe it's simply a coincidence, as there is no mention of Loumnik being ill, harmed, recently contracted. But it's not his model in the goal, which is still a bit specific.^^
    - Tidus' line when going back to Baaj. When asked why we're all coming in this gloomy place wasting our time, Tidus is just like "I'm petty and I want revenge.". It's not his words, but in a nutshell...^^

It's been forever since I've heard from you! I can't watch some of your current content because spoilers:( This was fun, though:)
My first time was with Rikku.
One little thing I like was the whole ordeal with the Blitzball tournament in the story. Tidus has to deal with and overcome his issues with his father in order to learn the Jecht Shot. This unique technique is so pivotal against the Luca Goers, and I like having the scene after the underdogs win. Makes the story better, IMO.
Another little thing is the situation with Wantz and O'aka XXIII. You HAVE to talk to Wantz on Gagazet in order to get the four free slot equipment. It makes sense, because Wantz wouldn't know what the party would look like. He was just following his older brother's instructions, but depending on one's playthrough, he never gets to meet you guys.
Again, these little, subtle options make the story great.

A little bit i discovered on my own is the epic song that plays during Braskas Final Aeon fight called Otherworld, if you read the lyrics, they actually tell the story of Tidus. Ill quickly decipher a few good lines :
    1. The other world is the "real" (not dream) world and Tidus is going to travel to it.
    2. Dont give up on the otherworld because they need Tidus
    3. Tidus will defy Yu Yevon (the had that feeds/creates him)
    Here are the lyrics:
Go now, if you want it
    An otherworld awaits you
Don't you give up on it
You bite the hand that feeds you
All alone, cold fields you wander
Memories of it cloud your sight
Fills your dreams, disturbs your slumber
Lost your way, a fallen knight
    Hold now; aim is steady
    An otherworld awaits you
    One thousand years you ready?
    The otherworld it takes you
Go, go into the sand and the dust and the sky
Go now no better plan than to do or to die
Free me, pray to the faith in the face of the light
Feed me, fill me with sin
    Now get ready to fight
    You know you will
    You know you will
You know you know you know you know that you will
    You know…

The fact that the symbol on Jechts chest and Tidus' trousers is just a mixture of the letters "J" and "T". Didn't notice that until recently
