Serbian girl's accent reminded me of my encounters with Balkan types in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago. I had a staffing supervisor from Bosnia whose secretary was Serbian.Then upon exiting their office, a Bosnian restaurant where this accent was spoken, awaited me. 😄 I miss Chicago 🥺 well, except for the South Side. 😅

I'm Polish, and I learn how to speak Spanish now. It's super easy to pronunce everything for me in Spanish. I'm very happy about it! English is really far away from my language.

Well as a polish person I have to disagree. In majority of schools we are taught British English (Cambridge or Oxford). But since it can be hard to pronounce sometimes we tend to have strong accent at the beginning. And then people who are more advanced or fluent often use American accent usually because of how popular it is in social media and movies - we just hear it a lot so we automatically adapt it.

it really depends if its a private school or public school,yes public schools use oxfords text books but when it comes to private educational institutions they learn rather american english (talking international private schools, of course if you attend private british school youll be learning british english)

in Serbian we write loan words in our phonetic way, so Croissant become Kroasan and it is pronounced that way or as the girl in video said
She explained it, in the UK they say it like that. Most French loan words will be correctly said in the UK compared to the US for example.

@@colinafobe2152 In Serbian if we speak how we say it in Serbian language it is "kroasana/kroasani/kroasane" (depending on whether we are talking about the singular or plural), which is quite similar to how Italians pronounce it in their language. If we talk about how we pronounce that word in English, we pronounce it the same as in English.

There is one video on yt where guy is showing random people serbian speech and they had to guess which langauge is that, because of similiarity of melodies and pronounciations in our langauges most of people said that is italian until they hear some popular slavic world :)

Really? That is interesting. I always found our serbian as very soft on accents, compared to italian. Or any other major European language.
The British girl kinda correctly spotted the soft "che" in Serbian pronunciation of "TH-cam". Ordinarily, when "t" and "j" (Jutjub) are next to each other, it does become the "ć" sound, but I assume since it's a proper noun of foreign origin, it's an exception.

I love Polish people in Chicago. They usually have a good fashion sense. You could tell apart the local Chicagoans from the East Europeans such as the Polish, Lithuanian and Ukrainian from the way they dress. 😃
I definitely agree! I live in Kentucky now for 6 years. Born and raised living in Chicago for 24 years I’ve gotta say polish people are my favorite part of that city. I lived in the Belmont Cragin and Portage Park area. Which in the 90s was predominantly polish. We were one of the first Latino families to move into the area. They welcomed my dad with a beer and my dad to them with a shot of Bacardi😂. True story. I miss hearing polish being spoken. Seeing the “Mówimy po polsku” signs. Hearing our neighbor asking Jak się masz?
And replying “dobrze” and that’s all we knew how to say but still got along 😂. Reminds me of my childhood 🥲. Still got close polish friends. They’re pretty hilarious and down to earth people. ♥️🇵🇱
US are considered lower in fashion sense in the EU. It's mostly tshirts and jeans.
in polish we speak as its written of course there are some exceptions like in many other languages i guess and tbh we are not tought international english at least i wasnt all my school life i was tought british engliish but i think it depends on a teacher becasue otehr poeple i know they were tought like she said. But at the end of the day most people speak with more american ish accent due to a movies, shows, music and so on but at least i speak llie mixed lets say some owrds i spell in american english other in british and other with truly polish accent mostly those with R's because its easier

I felt the same way about the Swedish girl, she was pronouncing everything basically in an American way because it's hard to pronounce English the "Swedish" way if you know English well enough. It just doesn't make sense. I'm sure it's the same for the Spanish girl. Would've made more sense to have them all say the sentences in their own language, I'm sure the Spanish girl would've said croissant properly then, as would the Swedish girl.

It's just that she's probably been living abroad for a long time and has forgotten how Spanish people actually say it and/or is having her pronunciation influenced by where she's currently living. I believe these are filmed in Korea so it's likely these people live there.
@Idkaboutu There’s no real such thing as looking Iberian. She’s clearly Caucasian and looks like someone of white European ancestry. Like come on, they’re not going to get a fake nationality on there, she’s from Spain.
🇱🇹 For me as a lithuanian, very funny to listen polish and serbian girls, because they pronounce almost the same or even identically how I pronouncing words in english, especially I relate with Serbian girl :D because we also have tendention to pronounce every letter in word how it is written, esp if we do not speak english every day. So for sure, same rolled ,,r", which makes laugh other people.
In my life I had enough awkward situations where I was misunderstood because of my pronunciation of english words. For example, I struggled with words ,,cuisine" and especially ,,choir".
When I studied on Erasmus in Bulgaria, where I made a lot laugh for my colleagues from Denmark, USA, because all the time when I went to choir, I said to my friends ,,choir" the way how I say in lithuanian- spelling each letter in word+ rolled ,,r". So it sounded something kind like I would say ,,whore". (I always pronounced every letter how it is written ,,chor" :D ) this putted me a lot times in comical and awkward situations. But I improved, at least I tried, and if I pronounce it not perfectly, but I really improved and try not to make shame for myself again 😁 p.s.- my mother was even more hardcore with her english pronunciation with a ,,beach" word like in a sentence ,, I go to the beach" (the ,,beach" turned like into you know what I mean which word pronounce :DDDDDDDDD). Uch 🙈
My best friend is a Lithuanian. We basically can read each other's languages since the pronunciation is the same in general. The meaning of the word is usually the hard part to understand but there are often similar words since Baltic and Slavic language groups were the last to break apart (Balto-Slavic). Daug meiles

As a Serb the "there are a lot of mountains in the north" part was hilarious because the north (Vojvodina) is the flattest part of Serbia, like almost completely flat, the more south you go the more mountains there are haha.
In Poland the same, we have mountains in the south, north is full of lakes and there is Baltic coastline.

Yes, that was funny, the whole of northern Serbia is flat because once upon a time there was the Pannonian sea there, but there are two mini-island mountains, Fruška gora and Vrsačke planine, and there is a European desert - Deliblatska peščara. The further south you go, the more hilly it is and the more mountains there are.

@@Augurium_David She is from Spain. This is often an issue with these videos though, because it's filmed in South Korea and usually the people have been living there for several years. At that point they might be more influenced by international pronounciation, which always confuses people.

The spain girl is not saying how in Spain they actually pronounce the words.
At first I was confused if the comparison was of words that are similar in English and the native languages of these girls, or just how people in these countries pronounce English. In Serbia, we learn British English at school, but we are exposed to American English a lot through movies and music, so we end up with some type of mixture of British and American English. We have some words here that exist in Serbian language but the pronunciation is a little different, for example "croissant" we say "kroasana/kroasani/kroasane" (the pronunciation is very similar to the Italian for croissant); "mayonnaise" is "majonez"; "chips" is usually another word for French fries in English (I think it can also be a snack but I am not sure, I think they say "crisps" for snack ) while in Serbian "čips" is just a snack (store-bought and bagged crisps) and French fries is "pomfrit" (It's derived from the French pomme frites). Interesting comment at the end about the "R", in Serbian, this letter is specific because even though it is not a vowel, sometimes it has the function of a vowel when there is no vowel next to it, we call that "slogotvorno R". And as Draga said in Serbian, each letter has its own sound, we do not create a specific sound by joining two letters, except for two exceptions in the Latin letters "lj" (cyrillic - љ) and "nj" (cyrillic - њ / this is the same voice as spanish "ñ").

@@m1lst3r89 Prema nivou težine za govornike engleskog jezici su podeljeni u četiri kategorije: 1. kategorija: španski, francuski, italijanski, portugalski itd.; 2. kategorija: nemački, švedski, norveški, holandski itd.; 3. kategorija: Svahili, Indonezijski/indonežanski jezik, Malajski jezik itd.; 4. najteža kategorija: poljski, srpski, letonski, grčki itd. Tako da naš jezik spada u teže jezike, nama nije težak naravno, što se tiče izgovora nije toliko jer ima melodičnost sličnu latinskim jezicima, ono što je najteže je gramatika, padeži, reči bez samoglasnika kao crv, krv, trn, grb, strancima je jako teško da izgovore ime naše države i naroda na našem jeziku zbog Srb gde nema samoglasnika između, takođe su im teški pojedini glasovi poput đ,č, ć, dž, c itd. Naš jezik je težak ali lep i logičan. Mene nervira previše korišćenje anglicizama koje je počelo u skorije vreme od strane mladih, kada imamo svoje reči za većinu stvari.

Za izgovoranje i čitanje neću nikad shvatiti ozbiljno da im je srpski težak. Padeži, neka specifična slova poput đ, ć, lj, nj, i neka ostale gramatičke vratolomije su elementi koji čine neki srpski težim. Ovo o bez samoglasnika ne verujem. Gomila reči u engleskom imaju samo jedan samoglasnik, što nije nešto. I na sve ovo, ja znam da ne govorim čak i naš jezik pravilno, ali volim kako je tako u biti jednostavan.
Ono što me više nervira je što večito koristimo tuđice, i to ne samo anglosaksonske. Treba stvoriti neke naše reči, kao Hrvati što rade.
Not exactly correct there are more than 2 expections for two letters making a different and unique sound/letter (jotovanje): d+j=dj/đ, l+j=lj, n+j=nj, t+j=ć, z+j=ž, there are also instances where j changes to lj when combined with certain letters like m+j=mlj, b+j=blj... and so on these are usually not noticed because of how rare they are and instantly changed.

My favorite perfume is Burberry and as a Serbian who rolls the r I was always so self conscious about when someone would give me a compliment and ask what perfume I was wearing. In my mind it was always something like Burrr-(don’t say berry because that’s a fruit)bree😂 It stressed me out so much I almost stopped wearing it.
5:22 think that goes for most Swedish people as well, pronouncing W as V instead, W is pretty much only used in some names and not really a true letter or what to call it.

Apart from Rs, there is a clear difference in Russian-Ukrainian-BeloRussian and South Slavic English accents.
Rolling 'R's is not enough for a language to sound similar to Russian. The melody of the Polish language is very different, we stress other syllables in words and we pronounce words differently - for example, if you hear somebody pronouncing 'work' with a hard v, like 'vork', he is probably Russian because it's hard for them to pronounce the 'w' sound.
It's interesting how famous historical enemies - French (a romance language) and English (a germanic language) actually share similar pronuciation of 'r' while at the same time being different from basically most if not all other European languages - germanic, romance, slavic or celtic where they roll their 'r'. Probably because of French influence on English because of the Normans/Plantagenets.

That's because there are no words in Spanish that start with the letter S and are followed by another consonant, so adding the vowel sound at the beginning makes it easier to pronounce.
@@dannyjorde2677 I know that. Had 4 years spanish in school but I think it’s funny that she even puts an e in front of an s when she talks English. But then again, we don’t have a TH in my language and many people here will just pronounce a D or T.

The fonetic of the many countries is so near. Polish, Russian, Serbian, Spain, Italian, Portuguese, Galicio..... The "R" and "T" and "L" are the same in the most of the cases. Sometimes, deutsch is a little near too. Just english is more different, mainly the USA english.

As a swede, it kinda depends on teacher to teacher if we learn British English or not. Personally I was taught to say trashcan, cookies and fries instead of rubbish bin, biscuits and chips but ofc we also always get examples in different English dialect so we learn a little of everything. I feel like many lf my English teachers tried to use British English bjt it didn't go well 😭

@@Nikifor_92 Pamiętam, że w gimnazjum miałam nauczycielkę angielskiego, która uczyła nas niby brytyjskiego angielskiego, ale ona sama wolała amerykański angielski, więc uczyła nas też jak pewne słowa lub zwroty są w amerykańskim.

Ania doesn’t pronounce things like a typical Polish person would. The Polish people are aware that the final E in English is most of the time silent. You will never hear anyone say "pur-PLEH”.

yeah but we never try to speak with British accent cause its impossible for us, American is much easier for Poles.
Not exactly in polish schools they teach ketchup instead of tomato sauce and Polish people say grill instead of barbecue
The spanish girl literally pronounced it with British accent, not with Spanish one.
Well the British girl stood up to the test of “our English is the right English”😂 but really as an American everything said in British does usually sound better, except I do love a good southern American accent.
I thought the girl from Sweden definitely sounded American.
I sound like her as I lived in England several years and my husband grew up in British boarding school, but we are both American and have American accents but we use some British words as well.😊
Funny enough we both have ancestors who came over to the States from Sweden.

in polish i would pronounce Google as "goo-gleh" not "goh-gleh"
She was referring to older generations who maybe don't speak English and read "OO" part like Polish "O" so it makes sense. I believe that the case for most Slavic countries.
