I was just thinking about this twenty minutes ago because I did a similar thing on accident and I was like how do I reproduce that? I was toying with ties and I think that configuration was still set and I just did a pattern record and held the note through the entire pattern. I found that if you set a hold and changed tones it would stop the tone so this is great to have this explanation.
