I was ready to write this one off, but I think Roland actually did something really key - adding enough modern functionality that leverages the “all sweetspot” tone of their older synth. You also do a great job of explaining creative nuances (like when to add the accent) and then showing how to do it. My next box is likely going to be one of the Elektron boxes (leaning towards Syntakt), but I’ve got to admit a small, great sounding SH with modern features really appeals to me (and the SH101 was my first Roland ever, so I’ve got an attachment to the sound.). Great review.
The Syntakt is an amazing device and would pair perfectly with this little monster. Got the S-1 last week on a whim and got to say it’s impressive for the money

I love my S-1 so much, I couldn't resist getting the T-8 too. The S-1 is truly an SH-101 on steroids, shrunken down.... I have no doubt that when the T-8 arrives in a few days, it will be equally impressive. This is coming from somebody who's owned and played more than a few other folks vintage analog Roland machines.
Ive already got a TR8 and Jupiter Xm with the SH101 in it yet this video making me want these 2 tiny machines to go with my MC101. The GAS is strong ;)
I wasn't aware of this synth until it started showing up in my feed. The 101 was a hole in my studio sound, and while I normally prefer real analog the fact that they added the chop and draw features makes this the most unique offering even with synths that cost 2-3x as much. Because of the form factor, it's also light enough that I when I travel for work, I can bring it along with my Digitakt and have a little poly that's studio ready at the fore.
@@LiamKillen I haven't seen anyone call this out yet, but the only drawback that I've seen for this synth is that if you don't turn the effects to "global on," the unit resets the delay and reverb on pattern changes. Very silly oversight if you ask me... it's not enough to make me dislike it (I love it) but it is quite annoying. It's *slightly* better with the v1.02 update.
Yeah I was a bit dismissive of it at first until I watched a couple of videos on it. Feature and sound wise it punches waaaay above its weight. All the oscillator mod options plus the LFO with motion recording make it a very powerful machine. This paired with a Volca Sample would be fantastic.

And what is the friend why? - I have: launch key 25 mk Novation control keyboard and want to connect it for example: to CIRCUIT TRACKS. Or - for the Roland device / Roland Aira S-1 and use their sounds. Many thanks to the helpers
I think that you mean you want to connect a midi keyboard to something like the S-1? Which is a great option to open it up! You would need a 5 pin midi cable and a 5 pin to 8th inch midi adaptor. Plug into the midi out of your keyboard into the midi in of your s-1 or whatever other unit you'd like to control. Hope this helps! :-)
Great video 👍. Does the sequencer have a way to transpose to incoming MIDI notes? If not and you have a contact at Roland, please ask them to implement it. The sequencer in my Boutique JP-08 doesn't do that and that really stinks - programming the same sequence into several patterns and then manually switching between them just doesn't hack it.
Not sure if you have mentioned, but the Aira S1 response to midi channel 3 while receiving midi CC. To the others, just make sure you set your midi out channel on the midi keyboard to channel 3 and you should be good to go
I can't have the S1 play a single note via MIDI in. Have tried from multiple sources: a Keystep pro and a BlackBox1010 (both midi out channel 3). Are there other settings on the S1 I'm missing?
@@DavidBlueMultimedia My problem was caused by a difference in TRS standard. I was using a TRS to MIDI type B adapter (which came with my blackbox 1010). But the S1 needs a type A TRS to Midi adapter. As soon as I got the right adapter the issue was solved. Too bad they didn't provide it in the box. Let me know if that works for you!
At 7:30 when you were going through all the steps, and adding extra notes on top of each other: could you also have just live-recorded the notes over top of each other? With the pattern running and recording?
I really wish the T-8 and S-1 sequencers would have more sub-step options. Namely on option where the note plays on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th substep, which would give the ability to sequence dotted sixteeths and something like triplets
It feels and sound much more like a sinthesizer than a volca key by example. The UI is great and i tested a skulpt, a keys and a fM2 No one has this complete UI feeling. An App would be nice too.

What would happen if I overwritten the demo pattern? Is it lost forever? Can I, for example, choose demo pattern 5 sound and make my own pattern and save it somewhere else? Or do I have to overwrite pattern 5?
I'm always impressed by how good this little box sounds, but I'm torn any it because I got rid of my Volcas because I got sick of using those tiny little controls. But then again, for my purposes the S-1 seems like it's a huge step up from the Volca Keys in terms of being a useful, practical studio tool, so maybe the tiny knobs are a small price to pay. Really great Intro for this cool synth. Quick question. I have noticed a few synths have the thing where the presets are built into the “pattern” but when you do a save does that also save the changed preset and not just just the pattern. I have ruined a few presets on other small synths that way and it drives me crazy. So I guess you have to do a save mayve to a whole different pattern? Is that what needs to happen on this one too ? Like on the pattern you saved. Did it mess up the preset that you said you liked ?
I'm pretty sure that there's a "save all" sort of option which saves all of the above- as opposed to just the pattern, let's say. This is a common thing with other Roland units as well.
Hi Liam! congratulations for the channel! it has nothing to do with this video, I'm also a user/addicted of the 1.4 model and I wanted to know how you record your live? do you use a zoom recorder? I thank you :) a warm greeting from Switzerland

Hi Liam - How do switch from the keyboard on the S-1 to enable the keystep 37 to override it? I have both devices wired as shown and set to channel 3 but can't get them to talk to each other.
There's a good chance that you're not using the correct 5 pin to 8th inch adaptor- I can never remember which model is the correct one for Roland products but the Elektron adaptor worked for me.
Hey Liam, with the part of your video where you showed the metronome I understand how you turned on the count in in the menu etc. But you showed a way to turn the metronome off with shift so you dont have to use the menu. I can't get the shift+ record to turn off metronome...any thoughts on what needs tone setup for it to work?
Thanks for this, just got the s1 and I’m loving it. My first hardware acquisition! I was using iOS music apps for years but decided to go the hardware route Your video was so clear and easy to understand, is there any chance you could do a short video on the osc draw function? I’m trying to follow the manual but not getting any sound changes For example, I want to sculpt an acid lead to keep me going until I get the t 6
Could be a dumb question but as a beginner I’m curious….4 notes were played on the keys at the beginning when recording but during play back we see 8 pads lit up on the s1. Can someone explain why that is? I assume the note plays across two steps in the sequence?
The TRS jack is the same 3.5mm jack that you would have plugged into your Walkman's headphone jack in the 1980s. Don't use the modern variant designed for cellphones. That won't work. The cables are cheap and ubiquitous. You don't need a fancy Roland cable. That being said, cheap cables tend to have lower build quality so don't buy the cheapest cable you can find.
Also Liam in the video where u hook up the t8 when you do what seems like scrubbing steps and you added in notes - is this something only possible when S-1 and T8 are hooked up or can the S-1 do this by itself?
I just can't get it to work with midi, I am using Type A Midi adapter, tried all the channels and nothing, no notes come out when I play on an external keyboard, tried with Arturia Minillab 3 and Roland Fantom 07, no sound at all via midi! Any thoughts?? Please help, thanks!
@@LiamKillen I just found out that my cable was bitten by my cat :-/ , I bought a new one and it is working now! Thank you so much my friend! Keep up the good work! Very nice channel, congratulations!!!
One more thing, I just found another video while searching for solutions here and the guy explained the difference between Type A and Type B, it is just the polarity of the TRS cable, he used some stereo breakout cables and cheap adapters to invert the polarity and it just works!
Just out of curiosity, how easy is it use these two machines together in a DAW where the DAW is controlling these devices (e.g. via midi?) ? I know the form factor is meant for on the road-use, but looking at this from a producing standpoint to load a project in a DAW and use that for sequencing rather than the machines themselves.
It's most likely the wrong 5 pin midi to 8th inch midi adaptor- there's two different types - make sure you're using the right one. It's the most annoying problem in the synth world.
can you have the parameters recorded in the sequencer but the notes to be sent from external midi (not coming from the internal sequencer)? ps: to work like a complex modulator for 8 parameters
Hi Liam. I was wondering if you could help me out. I recently picked up a Roland S-1, and have been trying to connect it to the Keystep 37. I have what I believe to be all of the proper cable connections. TRS type A MIDI adapter. Could use a little help and guidance. Appreciate any info that you can provide. Thanks. I am a bit of a novice when it comes to this stuff.
I’m pretty sure you just hit copy hold it and press the sequence you want to copy and it’ll prompt you to copy it over- if not do the same thing with a variation

Amazing ♥☺sounds BRo
Appreciate you! :-)
Quick question. Was your Keystep plugged into a computer, or did you use a wall socket?
Walk socket if I remember correctly!
@@LiamKillen awesome! Thank you 👍🏻
Hi Liam - How do switch from the keyboard on the S-1 to enable the keystep 37 to override it? I have both devices wired as shown and set to channel 3 but can't get them to talk to each other.
There's a good chance that you're not using the correct 5 pin to 8th inch adaptor- I can never remember which model is the correct one for Roland products but the Elektron adaptor worked for me.
@@LiamKillen thanks Liam! I've ordered an adapter from Amazon, still waiting for the delivery, hopefully that will do the trick.
MIDI Adapter Breakout Cable - Audio Jack TRS 3.5mm to MIDI 5 Pins DIN Female - Type A - working now, thanks for your advice.
Each time you hit shift + record you'll see on the screen what's happening- there's an option there to turn it off.
how are you getting your Arturia to control your S-1??? I can't get it to work through the midi, help?
Make sure your controller is set to channel 3- that might solve it.
The S-1 has an accelerometer in it too which is innovative.
Couldn't have said it better myself.
Can you use these to plug in a keyboard and sequence the keyboard sounds with the t8 or S1 like a korg sq1 or a beat step?
Yes you can sequence these with an external controller!
@@LiamKillencan you sequence the sounds of a keyboard though the t8
Hello thank you for this video specifically!
This is probably a no brainer question… this same set up would apply to a TR-8s + S-1 correct?
It certainly would 😊
Thanks for this, just got the s1 and I’m loving it. My first hardware acquisition! I was using iOS music apps for years but decided to go the hardware route
Your video was so clear and easy to understand, is there any chance you could do a short video on the osc draw function? I’m trying to follow the manual but not getting any sound changes
For example, I want to sculpt an acid lead to keep me going until I get the t 6
It’s my pleasure ! Enjoy the s-1 😊
Could be a dumb question but as a beginner I’m curious….4 notes were played on the keys at the beginning when recording but during play back we see 8 pads lit up on the s1. Can someone explain why that is? I assume the note plays across two steps in the sequence?
Hmm i do not have the answer to this question lol - i'm not 100 % sure. But thank you for watching! :-)
once you record a 16 step loop is it possible to extend to 64 and copy the first bar to the other 3?
I'm sure there's a way but I don't know how to navigate this one.
@@LiamKillen nowhere in the manual either but I swear I saw someone do it before
What type of Mehdi cable do you used on the Roland S1, I picked up a boss, Mehdi, TRS/midi multi directional BMDI - 1-35 and it doesn’t seem to work
I’m pretty sure those should work- make sure you’re set to the right midi channel on your Keystep- I’m pretty sure it’s channel 3
I'm not exactly sure what you mean on this one.
@@LiamKillen I jus got it. I had to update to v1.02. Out the box stuff you are doing just wasn't possible. Great video!
3:12 Hi Liam, what is that holder you're using to prop up the Roland S-1? Is it height adjustable, and could it work for other small synths? Thanks
I can't remember the company name of that one but I get currently get all of my stands from Analog Cases.
Now we wait for a Aira pocket sampler to complement this quartet
Ouuuuuuu
My thoughts exactly
I would like to hear the lick with every preset.

How did you get the T8 to work with the Arturia??
Make sure you have the right 5 pin to midi adaptor! It's the most annoying problem in the synth world, there are multiple kinds.
Got the right cable thanks to your heads up. Still no response from the Keystep tho. Set them both to the same channel. Hmm
Honestly I would say double check you’ve got the right adaptor
I haven't dug into this much but they are absolutely compatible with a DAW- i'm just not sure to what degree.
Liam, What is the little riser stand you are using for the S-1?
I got it from Varidock! I have a few custom= stands from them and couldn't recommend them more.
@@LiamKillen that’s a really cool concept, I might get a larger one to hold all the boutiques together
Hi guys I just fail to connect the Arturia with the S1. Any suggestions? MiDI setup? Wrong cables?
It's most likely the wrong 5 pin midi to 8th inch midi adaptor- there's two different types - make sure you're using the right one. It's the most annoying problem in the synth world.
I'm sending away for a t8 in a week ..do you know if I can sequence my Yamaha DJ x through it.?
I'm not 100 % sure with DJ syncing as i've never tried it.
how do i get to midi channel settings
Shift and menu - scroll through there you’ll find it
can you have the parameters recorded in the sequencer but the notes to be sent from external midi (not coming from the internal sequencer)?
ps: to work like a complex modulator for 8 parameters
That i haven't tried lol.
@@LiamKillen its working, I found out in the mean time 🙏
should I get them both or get the AKAI APC64 instead cuz i usually do abelton live??
Push 3 might be right up your alley too
@@LiamKillenThanks!
Nevermind. I figured it out. I was on the wrong MIDI channel.
OK cool! :-)
Glad that you figured it out! :-)
Thanks. Also I reached out to you via your website looking for lessons. Don’t know if you’ve had a chance to see it yet.
can you save midi file to a usb stick? Tyvm 4 info!
not to my knowledge.
can you overdub an already recorded sequence in real-time in order to add notes rather than use step record?
If I’m understanding correctly, no you cannot
Distrokid double charged me.
whaaaaaa???
How can i copy a 16 step sequence and repeat it in a 32 step sequence?
I’m pretty sure you just hit copy hold it and press the sequence you want to copy and it’ll prompt you to copy it over- if not do the same thing with a variation
What is the stand being used to put synth on?
That one’s from Varidock!
What is that clever stand ?
Got it from Varidock! They have some really great custom stands.
@@LiamKillen Ah thanks!
Not bad🤠
Not bad at all!!
Amigo nesecito aprender a enviar notas desde Fl Studio a la Roland s1
I wish I knew what this meant.
Hi, i am havin some problems to make S1 controller by midi with the keystep 32, can you help me pls?
I can probably help in an online lesson! Here's what I offer: www.liamkillen.com/book-a-lesson
But how to do 8 bars?only 64 steps
I don't know exactly what you're referring to because I made this video a while ago !
ACB far and away better than Zen.
S-1 and TR-8S would make an awesome team!
They certainly do !!!
