A cover song I really like is Ocean's cover of creep. It doesn't sound like Radiohead at all, but they really let loose in the song and I think they did it justice by making it entirely their own and not trying to sound anything like radiohead.

Yeah the story behind the “Africa” cover is way better than the cover itself…I still can barely tell the difference between the two songs. Weezer is an odd case though I think because it’s like the entire reason for recording that covers album was for PR & clout. And I’m strangely cool with that because Rock music needs some artists who are willing to do that.

The most depressing part about Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt is that while Trent wrote the song to talk about the pain he’s going through, Johnny took the song and made it an official goodbye song especially since he ended up passing away a couple of months later.

For a song to be iconic it has to be well known by the masses. Just bc you and your friends like the song doesn't make it iconic. It's a decent cover but not iconic by any measure. The label iconic isn't determined by your or anyone else's opinions but by the impact, being wisely known by the masses and considered the definitive version.

Cash's Hurt is one of the most emotionally impactful songs I have ever heard. It feels less like a cover and more like a song whose message can apply to so many walks of life. I bet a hyper pop cover could be done and it would still be affecting and relevant so long as the gravitas of the original lyrics (credit to Reznor) is preserved.

    • @kohhna

Yeah, its amazing. I just hate that a load of fucking boomers had no idea that it was a cover. Johnny Cash was a legend and always stuck up for younger upcoming generations of musicians, even during the 80s when the whole Satanic Panic shit was going off, him doing a NIN cover was a statement of solidarity as much as anything, it annoys me that there seems to be a fair portion of people who think of themselves as his fans but don't get the intent there.

Being sung by a dying old man that's lived a life full of regrets just transforms the entire song to be a reflection on guilt and personal demons as you face your own judgement day.
Even the censored line alters it because crown of thorns gives the impression he's mockingly comparing himself to Christ as a condemnation of the self-destructive hubris he often displayed in his youth.

Finn just completely overlooks and shit talks ska. Idk how you can think Disturbed's cover of "Sound of Silence" is good and then tear into a perfectly good cover. Every time ska is mentioned, he always uses it as an opportunity to put it down and trivialize it. Ska was a big stepping stone for me and so many others to other kinds of music and Finn never acknowledges it. It's bullshit. He never even talks about bands like Streetlight or Arrogant Sons of Bitches that were not just some goofy ska bands. They had good lyrics and really sweet melodies. But Finn will always overlook this type of music and act like everything is better than it.

@@JarmaRooMcDoo I had a brief exchange with him about this and basically he has been given a bad impression by a lot of ska *fans* - it's got next to nothing to do with the actual music. I said something along the lines of it is better to no to let other people ruin things for you and like or dislike things for what they are, not for who else likes/dislikes it. He acknowledged that as a good point but I guess it wasn't good enough for him to change his perspective.
Unless he *does* like ska at least somewhat but likes winding up ska fans even more, which probably has at least some truth to it. It gets people commenting at the very least and he does work at the mercy of that algorithm.

So yeah, while he continues to approaches it with such silliness and shallowness, Finn has no valid opinions on ska to me. He slags ska off and I shrug it off as "well you like to wind up the ska fans so you *would* say that."

Metallica's fan club used to have a yearly magazine for the people that actually paid the fee to be an official member. Being in the fan club got you first dibs on tickets, they sent you a special shirt every year and obviously the glossy magazine. Anyway, that magazine was called "So What" named after the Anti-Nowhere League song. Back when I used to go see them ages ago, they used to always open the show with that song! I guess they don't anymore. I don't even know if the fan club is even still a thing. I wonder what all those old shirts are worth now? I probably have 15 of them. Never worn any of em. Was anyone else in that fan club?

Bigger amongst metal fans for sure - but in club circles it won't be. I think it's a great, tight cover though. I'd prefer to dance to the original because of the 'building up the layers gradually' and the various differences in the drums and bass .. but for a quick hit on a metal/goth dancefloor, Orgy's is great.

I remember Alien Ant Farm playing Warped Tour and they wouldn’t play the cover till the end of the set to make sure people stuck around. I saw them again a a year later and they refused to even play it. Years and years later after they were a bit past their prime they played in Richland, WA at Rays Golden Lion (RIP) and the show sold out. They did play ‘Smooth Criminal’ and the place went NUTS. Honestly one of the most fun shows I’ve ever been too. Alien Ant Farm knew how to play a small venue and make it fun.

They showed up an hour late to the venue, pushed everything back an hour, then threw a fit when they weren't going to go on until 1:30 AM. The thing with the Puddle of Mudd's Nirvana cover was the fact that they've done it very well in the past. Killswitch had the advantage of every single member of the band being extremely talented in their genre. I personally think Howard is vastly superior to Jesse but even he is pretty great. Plus Ronnie James Dio was such a talented singer that only someone as good as Howard could cover him successfully. And I think they also incorporated the metalcore riffs and the screams successfully without it just sounding like “Our Last Night- Holy Diver (metal cover)” or something

    • @princealigorna7468
      @princealigorna7468 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it works surprisingly well.
Going back to that Dio tribute album though, Rob Halford's take on "Man on the Silver Mountain" sucked. I was so disappointed. I think he intentionally held back because he and Ronnie respected the hell out of each other and he didn't want to step on Ronnie by oversinging. But I think that's what everyone wanted! We wanted Halford to pay respect to Ronnie by going full Halford! Just like if it were the other way around, we'd want Ronnie to pay respects to Halford by going full Ronnie!
Most of that album is fantastic though. Anthrax, Tenacious D, Metallica, Doro, Biff Byford and Lemmy, Klaus Meine, Corey Taylor, Lzzy Hale, and Glenn Hughes especially put in fantastic takes

16:15 I think a big part of the reason 80’s and 90’s subgrenres were more restrictive and cross pollinated less is simply due to the technology. Back then if you wanted to get into an obscure genre you needed to invest a lot more time, effort and money to acquire albums. Being into everything wasn’t really feasible for a lot of people so they picked a few genres and dove into those more exclusively. Plus with the limited communication it wouldn’t surprise me if some of the more underground subgrenres were barely even aware of each others existence.
Enter the internet age and all of a sudden the only thing separating you from checking out a new genre was trying to find a good torrent or download. Then TH-cam and digital distribution came along and really broke it open.
