Get yourself some pigs to clear the brush, much cheaper and very natural. Tbh guys, suburban vegans trying their hand at farming is painful to watch for us country folk, maybe stick to the fitness content…
Guys, for the size property you bought I think what you need is a subcompact 4x4 tractor, like a BX Series Kubota with a 26hp diesel. This is what we have here in Virginia. You can purchase the front-end loader to pickup heavy wood you split, mulch, etc. You get a belly mower for maintaining grass, a bushog for the three-point hitch in the back so you can back into those brambles (note: you won't tear yourself up), a snow blower, a box blade for maintaining gravels, you can even get a PTO driven power generator for the three-point hitch in the back. Something to think about....
Should turn it into a wildflower field, bring back wildlife & insects would also help with drainage.. I think, who knows maybe I made that last bit up 🤷♂️
Love watching your new adventures at the farm! From one farmer to another, if you had a tractor with a brush hog/bush hog attachment, you could do some serious mowing/clearing without destroying a small riding mower… which is really best used on shorter bits of grass and weeds. Your blade will dull in no time! Only speaking from personal experience…glad to hear you bit the bullet and got a tractor! It that won’t get stuck and has several attachments from a bucket to a fork lift to a mower. 😊 will save you soooo much grief in the long run! ❤❤
A petrol brush cutter with a solid blade will work well if the area is free from solid objects (tree stumps, fence posts) But use a line cutter against the fence line. Those reeds will be especially tough to cut. And for heavens sakes, wear close fitting eye protection and sturdy leg wear and leather boots. These outdoor tools are very powerful. Take care guys.
I think you have done a magnificent job! Well done. Tip from a farmer who attended a reed and sedge control meeting with other farmers led by an agri scientist - mow the reeds 7 times in one year and you guarantee their eradication. Persevere!
Fun to watch guys. Brushcutter will be fine all year, provided you don’t need a bowling green. Keep totally clear of the wet areas with heavy machinery or you’ll create permanent wet patches. If you’re having fun don’t make it perfect too quickly
I grew up with 2 acres for a back yard. Due to a set of unfortunate events, we ended up without a lawn mower for a couple of months. The grass and weeds grew to waist height. There were many critters that decided to call it home. When we finally got a new mower, it took all day to mow since we had to cut it twice. Once with the blade as high as it would go, and then again on the desired setting. Once we were at maintenance mowing, it was quick and easy and took maybe an hour total. You guys have a lot of work to get to maintenance mode, but once there, I think you are going to absolutely love living there!
Have you sorted out a path around the property so Mark can host his own weekly 5k "Mark Run" in the countryside? Maybe have it finish by a small podium in front of Cluckingham Palace.
Definitely rushes not reeds. Probably soft rush, Juncus effusus. Bramble-rich margins are great for wildlife as is standing deadwood. If you're worried about encroachment onto the grassland, cut back about a quarter of scrub margins each winter. Good luck with your project.
Nice work guys, must be freezing. Be careful of the hedgerow regs btw! Dont think I saw any in the vid but came to mind as you were talking about cutting.
Great video Jen. Im enjoying the trip. By the way, for cold dry days, get electric socks. Im a cyclist and they are a game-changer. Thank me later for that life-improving tip 😁😁
Curious, what is your handheld brush cutter? I use a Stihl kombi with a hedge clipper attachment. It can go through stuff an inch or more in diameter with a little effort. I also love my weed wrench and I think you might find it useful as well.
...if it can run over it, it will cut it.... BEWARE of dog!.... Minced dog is NOT a pretty sight 🙈🙈🙈. Very nice progress and a nice video 👍👍 Take care, you two, you are getting the hang of working with powered tools, but do not get cocky - they ARE dangerous. 👍☀️👍☀️
Sheep 🐑 will keep it down and provide you with delicious food as well, win win.🏆 also a few pigs 🐖 and all of a sudden you are a small farmer 👨🌾 great job and video,
We have two meadows the other side of the stream which we plan to re-wild/leave wild for all the wildlife. 🥰 The field in this video is going to house our goats, chickens etc.
🤣🤣 Jens intro gesticulating like Gavin Newsome / Donald Trump combo! I bet you'd still be doing all of that instead of living where you did. Best of luck to you both 😁
Could you look at doing a burn off, basically it is setting a specific area on fire with controls in place to mange the fire. It is done a lot in Australia
It is a worry guys. You say it's cold (It's January) and then proceed to work outdoors in shorts and no hat, jacket open. I get the sense you are tackling jobs on your land with no real sense of having worked on the land before. You appear very green regards potential injury risks. Working near trees, especially if they contain dead wood, always wear head protection. A hard hat, not a bobble hat!
is this a couple's channel, or Jen's channel, or merely an extension of Mark's channel? I'm a bit worried about the lack of differentiation. On a channel with Jen in the name, I'm truly interested in her perspective. Not sure why it needs a Mark to moderate as much (I love this on Mark Lewis' channel). Nothing against the leg up from what has been proven to work for Mark, but more touches of Jen would be appreciated! This is meant as long-term YT tactics input, nothing against you personally - quite the contrary. Love you both as creators!
Anyone else mad enough to be mowing their grass in January? 😅🙈
Wish we could be mowing our 10acres but it’s covered in a couple feet of snow here in Central Canada
Not in shorts after complaining his hands are frozen 😅
Nope, no mowing here in Austria, fortunately!
Get yourself some pigs to clear the brush, much cheaper and very natural. Tbh guys, suburban vegans trying their hand at farming is painful to watch for us country folk, maybe stick to the fitness content…
Every ten days or so here in Australia.
Your dogs must be unreasonably happy with your new home ❤
The two of you are outstanding in your field
😂
"It is freezing cold" Proceeds to cut to Mark in his short shorts 🤪
My thoughts exactly 😂
Never thought I'd be watching videos on people mowing their field...but when it's Jen and Mark it's acceptable. Love both your channels.
Thank you
My contribution is,
SHORTS???!!!
Old Tractor with a Topper is what you need especially if you can get one with a front bucket for carry logs around
Ignore me! I wrote this before I'd got to the bit about your tractor not having arrived yet
Congrats Jen and Mark on having all these new experiences!
Thank you ☺️

@@jenlewislifeI heard you say it 😂

We have two meadows the other side which our plan is to do exactly this! 😃
Mentioning the cold while wearing shorts in January! Classic Mark. You should create some crop circles on that field.
Now that’s an idea! 😀

They are never going back to a city 😂

Tip: I attached a bike drink bottle holder to my mower so that I can take a thermal of coffee around with me
Cluckingham Palace is genious. You must have had a field day
You guys are making this work look like fun
Enjoying this channel well done guys 👍
I have 14 acres here in 🇨🇦 I use a Deere 3025e with a 3 point 60 inch mower for my tall stuff works so good
You guys need a Kubota bx or Deere series 2. it could handle every ask you have and more.
Make a pond in the wet bit. Probably the site of a spring. Not much point in fighting nature, much easier to work with it.
I do love the idea of a pond! 😃
Awesome boys toys. A ride along brush cutter; hand held brush cutter; drones... 💪

Not yet. Maybe one day! 😄
Great job Team Lewis!
Freezing cold... wearings shorts 😄
Seeing that overhead view of the grass being cut satisfied some strange OCD impulse of mine. Field looks great!
Thanks. 😊
That's a great job 👏

inspiring lifestyle! good job
You two are content monsters. Well done.
I thought I had wet ground. Most of my property is swamp, but I don't have reeds growing on hilltops like you do. You have some incredibly wet ground.
Indeed we do! Hopefully we will sort it by next winter. 😃
Good thing Jens setting some ground rules. ”Petrol. we’re english.”
🙈😂🙄
Nice work guys, must be freezing. Be careful of the hedgerow regs btw! Dont think I saw any in the vid but came to mind as you were talking about cutting.
Thanks for the heads up!
There's rules about the banks of waterways as well.....
goats will make this look even better - and clear the grass too!
They certainly will! 🥰
Great video Jen. Im enjoying the trip. By the way, for cold dry days, get electric socks. Im a cyclist and they are a game-changer. Thank me later for that life-improving tip 😁😁
i'm shopping for them now 😂
Nixon just wanted a drink :P

Glorious. Need more jeopardy. 🤣
Hang in there - jeopardy is on the way 😂
@@jenlewislife Awesome! Love what you guys are doing #goals keep up the good work.
Mark complains it's freezing, not much later... he's wearing shorts! 🤦🤣 3:03 3:21
Jen “Ok so Mark has now taken over because it’s freezing cold”
…cut to footage of Mark mowing in shorts.
Unless it's snowing, he wears shorts. 🙄🙈

Goats are on the list. ☺️
Thick shrubby undergrowth is ideal for birds....nightingales for example
We have acres of it. This was one little field.
Drainage - ask the local farmers! They do this all the time, and will have knowledge of the soil type and water table that internet randomers won't.
Your Graces, have you purchased a duchy?
That was a cool natural landscape…. A good ecosystem developing and you just mowed it…. Why lol
I agree. Have you thought about creating some wild areas? Easy for me to say living in my suburban house with tiny garden.
We have two meadows the other side of the stream which we plan to re-wild/leave wild for all the wildlife. 🥰 The field in this video is going to house our goats, chickens etc.
Thinking a naturally regenerated area of meadow/pasture because it’s not manicured is a mess…..hmmm……
How many times did the bloke in shorts tell us how cold it was? There is a solution to that you know Mark…
Buy a big Lambo Tractor with big mower just like Clarkson 😂
I wish we had Lambo money to do so! 😭
🤣🤣 Jens intro gesticulating like Gavin Newsome / Donald Trump combo!
I bet you'd still be doing all of that instead of living where you did. Best of luck to you both 😁
Petrol, we're English 😅
please dont ask her to reverse park :P

If you cut across the field rather than up and down you wouldn’t have to keep turning the blades off 🙄
Id of bought a classic tractor and mower from an agricultural auction
I’d love a classic tractor! Just for fun. 😀
@jenlewislife they are great!
Please be careful with the cutter blades around your dogs. As you said, if it can drive over it, it will cut it. 😰
Dogs were further away than they look 😊
Need some Goats
Coming soon!
@@MarkLewisfitness goats are wicked smart and love to escape... so plenty of fences first.
cut crossways!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
