    I was in a sorority at Vanderbilt and this is SPOT ON and very well-said. I think a lot of people feel this way and are afraid to say anything since the Greek culture dominates so intensely, but I wish I had dropped earlier instead of convincing myself to “stick with it” until graduation. I’m glad that people have begun to shed light on this recently; thank you for your honesty in this video!

    I’m proud of you Jackie! Thank you for shedding light on the systemic racism and elitism that exist in Greek culture. I know you stumbled across this injustice, but I appreciate that you clearly see it as a fundamental problem that POC are left out in so many ways. Please continue to be aware of these issues and use your privilege to stand against it in all areas of life. You rock girl! ❤️

    Thank you so much for this video. I am an alum of my sorority now, but when I was in college I was in one of my school's "lower tier" sororities (a.k.a the girls who were not extremely wealthy or didn't get asked back to another house), and while I always felt like my sorority was one of the most kind and genuine groups on campus, the way people automatically thought lesser of us when they found out which sorority we were in was so gross. My sophomore year, there was a freshman in one of my classes who I had talked to a bit both in class and at parties. She was rushing and I really liked her because she seemed very sweet and I thought she exemplified our core values. When it came time to vote on her during the first night of recruitment, I spoke on her behalf and said I'd gotten to know her through a class and thought she'd be a great fit. Immediately two other girls raised their hands and said that they'd talked to her in the first round of recruitment, and that she had been very rude to both of them and acted like she didn't want to be there. She ended up getting a "top house" and pretty much ignored me in class for the rest of the semester. I think a lot of peoples' true colors really come out when they go through recruitment/join a sorority.

    Welcome to the SEC. Greek Life IS Campus Life. I think the conditions at Vanderbilt are pretty common of Southern Schools honestly. Even the sororities and fraternities that are more inclusive, they get designated as lower tier or less desirable houses. And that's why NPHC and MGC orgs were created because certain students weren't allowed/embraced in certain spaces. Not saying anyone should be limited, but definitely align yourself with people that embrace you.

I also commuted to school so it was hard to keep up. Now 20 years later and able to share experiences online, I can say that I don’t feel as bad for my decisions. thank you for sharing your story, i attend a university where we do not have sororities. I think that it is very good that you shared your story and your experience. I have heard from some of my friends on how expensive it is. I am sad to hear about the inequities in the greek life organization. Spreading awareness is so important, its important to know the information that you shared because often times not a lot of people who decide to rush may not understand or know how much of one a commitment it is, second how much financial responsibility and strain it can be. I had no idea that they can fine you if you decide that you cant make it to an event. I wish that, that would not happen, because would if a person has a family matter and the person would have to go out of town the week of an event? There are some things that are more important that a person has to take care of as well as tend to, i wish that greek life could understand that. You continue to be yourself, continue to use your platform to help address issues that are often swift under the rug. You seem so sweet and so kind, i hope that you have a great school year this year despite the current circumstances.Because of you, i have a better understanding of greek life.

I felt pressured to join because of the social status that it holds, I thought about doing COB (continuous open bidding) at my current university but was turned off by the exclusion, and time commitment described by a girl I know who dropped her sophomore year. This systematic form of exclusivity needs to be re-evaluated as a large aspect of university life.

    Thank you for being honest and sharing what you’ve experienced being part of Greek life! I go to another large public state school where even more than 50-60% of the student body is part of Greek life, and the way they create this sense of exclusivity and self-righteousness on campus is disgusting. I have overheard some of the most disturbing and offensive conversations between members of frats and sororities, and this really is a system that perpetuates racism and classism (among tons of other things like misogyny, rape culture, drug abuse, etc.). It’s possible to try and ignore it for a little while, but at some point it just poisons everything and affects everyone on campus because of how loud and common Greek life is. I appreciated your candid conversation about the serious problems with the system, and especially how sensitive you were to BIPOC and the blatant mistreatment they receive as part of it.

    I know exactly what you mean about being “labeled” I didn’t get into the house I originally wanted and the house I never picked wanted me. So I ended up joining a brand new house That year. It was hilarious to see that people assumed that I was appart of the sorority I wanted to join in the first place bc they had a reputation and attitude that I fitted. I feel like the only reason why I wasn’t put in is the fact that I hate social media so my instagram was basically non existent. I admit it hurt a little bit that I wasn’t in this “top house” (my school at the time only had like 3 sororities so the idea of a tier was ridiculous ) However being in that new sorority also meant that a lot of greek life didn’t really know how to treat us and instead got to know me as a person instead of pre-assuming my personality... I ultimately ended up dropping bc I just couldn’t afford it. I had the opportunity to come back and rush again but the shallowness of Greek Life wasn’t for me anymore also the “top house” now wanted me bc of my “good reputation” even though I didn’t initiate I was loyal to the sorority I joined and I was real annoyed at my former sisters making fun of their own sisters loudly in a cafe right near school filled with people from my school... The fakeness was uncanning and I couldn’t be associated with that.... just like you said we are in college... not in high school. Also about the party stuff I found that that fraternities didn’t put girls on the list from a certain sorority... it was really sad bc they were already known as the “anti-social sorority” but how would they even get in the first place now...while in my sorority I had the best times of my college career( I’m in my 5th year now and I joined as a fr) so their is lots of good things about greek life but lots and immature bs classism too.

    Greek at life at my school is really different than the normal experience. our school and town of the college have really strict guidelines like no greek housing (hazing incident about 20or 30 years ago) whatsoever and all orgs are monitored by the student affairs offices and the rules for our dances are also really strict and other things like that. I really do appreciate the guidelines as it makes a busy theatre major like myself able to join orgs like sororities, but as a POC myself it is difficult to be around other women and not see someone like you or share a similar culture or struggles. It’s also difficult to make those connections with other girls when you can’t fully relate to them and there is not a lot of effort to makes us feel like we are not being “other’d”. I joined my sorority to make friends outside of theatre and I do enjoy it, but also sometimes I wonder how long these organizations will stick around and what their true purpose is in today’s world.

    Usually when I see "why i dropped my sorority" I assume it is about disaffiliating for rush. Thanks for sharing your story. I went to a small, not prestigious (not bad school, just nothing near Vanderbilt) school and always knew Greek life was not for me. I'm not rebelliously independent, but have always tried to do my own thing. I actually probably have the sorority look (not as much when I was in college, cause I shopped at Wal-Mart. Anyway, I did know plenty of down to earth sorority girls. I did know some who got jobs just to pay for it. I was shocked when I learned they had to pay fines for missing events. When there were always Thursday night events and early morning Friday classes (at least for Freshman) I asked why they had to go. From social media, I have noticed a bit more diversity in the sororities at my school (I graduated years ago), but they are still pretty segregated. The more I learn about Greek organizations, the more strange the dedication to the secret rituals and signs seems a bit weird.

    Thanks so much for making this. I had considered joining a sorority at Vandy for a while but I was worried that I would become a token minority for a bunch of shallow rich girls. I also know I am very privileged, but I’ll have to get a LOT of scholarships to afford Vandy and the cost of Greek Life was another thing I was worried about. I’ve seen a lot of videos and blogs about middle class POC having good experiences in Greek Life, but I still wasn’t sure because I had never heard a personal account from a Vandy student. I’ll never be 100% sure about it but this video was very helpful to me!

    You have a great head on your shoulders! My daughter just went through Sorority pledging at a very competitive school and didn't get a bid from one of her desired houses. After listening to your thoughts, I'm glad she didn't. She's pretty crushed and wants to transfer. She feels uncomfortable walking around campus because of the insecurities that developed after the rejection. She isn't satisfied by the idea that she goes to a University with an 11 percent acceptance rate which to me, is most important accomplishment in itself (she made Dean's list last semester). I'm hoping she discovers your video so that she can listen to your perspective. I'm also hoping that there are women like you that she can form friendships with.

If it isn't something you are made for then you wont be happy. The relief I saw on my friends faces when they dropped was night and day from how they had been. Do what makes you happy.

      @@VHale-yz7hc lol i think you’re misinterpreting my comment. Regardless of elitism & racism, 99% of people from the UK would find the concept of sororities & rushing absolutely absurd. It’s a cultural difference to a certain extent. And for the record, i think there’s sufficient evidence that racism is more widespread & severe in the US (although of course it definitely exists in the UK too)

    I thought long and hard about rushing because I too go to a school in the SEC and I have so many friends and family that were in sororities and it feels like most people are apart of it around here. My cousin educated me on rush and it completely changed my mind. I just didn’t want people to like me based on my social media, or my personal life. Sure, the houses are pretty and they do look like they have fun, but for that price....

    Thank you for using your platform to raise awareness about these issues. My biggest issue about sororities is lack of diversity. Take Alabama for instant. All girls who rush at Alabama are white, rich, petite and blonde. The sorority Gracie O Connor is in. Zero diversity

    • @TaraDactylWasHere
      @TaraDactylWasHere 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lauren Norris is a youtuber in that sorority as well. Lauren's a sweet girl. Def a white/blonde sorority though. Most of Alabama sororities are like that. Alabama is known for it's backwoods racist views

    something about sororities have always made me u comfortable, my friend said she was rushing and one of the sororities literally made girls sit on a washing machine and if anything was jiggling they said they had a week to get rid of it! As in body fat or something!!!! I could not believe what i was hearing, literally insane, i know not everywhere is like that but I’ve just heard so many horror stories - frats are also so exclusive, some frats at my sisters school won’t let you come to a party unless you’re in a sorority

    • @Kenshiroit
      @Kenshiroit 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sitting on a washmachine, if you sit right and the machine is running you get orgasm. Get rid of it in a week, means getting rid of virgiity. Fraternities and sororities are exclusive clubs. You need money look attitude and the right color.

    I'm a Nigerian and I am just starting to understand this SORORITY thing. We do not have it here at least not as big and organized like that. I understand the extra layer of exclusivity in an already exclusive group. IT SUCKS. Like when I was in Secondary school everyone seemed to know stuff that I would later come to find out about like weeks/months later. I guess it was kinda cause I made minding my own business a top priority. I'm not even an Introvert.

    My same story from the 80’s. No individuality, pressure to conform, fines... I got out too- after initiation. I applaud you. Some students genuinely don’t understand what they’re getting into, so this is so important to have this information out there. It is one of the most exclusive, racist, elitist, judgmental environments out there and it just gets looked over in the name of philanthropy. It’s insidious and hypocritical...you can’t believe in BLM (for example) and be a part of this toxic experience at the same time. It is a deep rooted culture of judgement like no other and it needs to go away. And for anybody wondering if it’s just at Vandy that they need to know “what does your father do for a living?”, or judge you on your clothing, jewelry, or vacation choices or lack there of ... it’s not, unfortunately. College can be a wonderful experience. Greek life will NOT make or break it as some will tell you.

  • @drumsNstuff79

    When I was in high school down south 25 years ago (class of '97) all the popular kids would talk about greek life in college non stop. The guys all looked forward to the drinking and sorority babes (dude like the hottest most perfect super model babes are just right there for the &*&^ing! ), and the girls all wanted to be those babes. It was all about cliquey popularity and wealth and fashion and social status above all else. I'm originally from New England so it was whole new culture for me. One girl in my art class had not even picked out a major and didn't seem to care. All that mattered was the sorority life to her. She had it all planned out, what chapter, what room, how it would be decorated, what dresses she would wear, what guys she would meet at what parties.. etc. The frat guys, the parties, the fashion, the exclusivity, the popularity and how her wealthy parents were going to fund everything. It was if her parents were more interested in her having a "cool" college experience instead of getting an education because that's what they did. Can't you do both? All these years later as I reconnect with classmates on Facebook (what we 40 somethings use.. we're so lame! haha..) I am finding out the girls like that just became boring housewives The guys all got plain blue collar jobs. Not that's there's anything wrong with that, but the cool quirky driven kids I knew back then now all have great careers, fun hobbies, world travel, diverse friends... A trip to england to visit historic pubs for micro brewing research, for example. One girl was teased mercilessly for working on the school's cable access channel. She went on to work for CMT (country music television) and had a cool as hell career. Find what you love and just do it well. Put all your love into that and accumulate your own tribe of supporters and friends. Those are the people you want to be with.
