  • FIRST OF ALLLLLL, hi and thank you so much for watching. I know this video is long A F!! I tried to cut it down as much as I can!! I filmed this video in March of 2019 (yes, it was still cold as ballz in MN) but had JUST officially made the decision to upload and share my story. It was a very difficult decision because I was afraid of backlash from the people in the sorority. I made this video to share my story, it's not intended to bash or put anybody down as no names were mentioned. Every sorority is different!
    #sorority #hazing
    Update 2020: I cannot believe how many of you are reaching out to me via instagram expressing the same concerns! I'm so sad that similar things are happening to girls all over the world!!! I love you allllll please stay strong and GET OUT if you are not in a safe place.

    I had almost the exact same experience while I was in an asian sorority. The peer pressure, bullying, and hazing that goes on in greek life definitely needs to be talked about more. It's unfortunate how normalized the toxic culture is.

    I'm thinking of leaving my fraternity not because they do sketchy and hazing stuff, but because there's no activity going on and I don't feel like I'm getting anything out of it. Whenever there'd be get-togethers, it's often just going out to eat and getting drunk on a school night of all nights. I don't participate in those because I don't drink (never have and probably never will) and I don't like the idea of going out to bars and clubs to get drunk and feel like shit the next day. Not to mention, I have school to think about. Granted, we’re also severely low on membership and it's been that way since the pandemic hit. What's worse is that our chapter in said fraternity is suspended (for reasons I cannot disclose) and most of the brothers will be graduating this year, which leaves me the only one. I don't want to take that burden because I have other things I want to pursue like martial arts and being involved in a different club that I enjoy the most out of any club in my college experience so far and carrying on the frat's legacy in the school I go to might just hold me back.
    I've also become disillusioned with greek life and how it's not necessary, at least for me. Now I'm sure for a lot of people, it has built connections, skills, and friendships that will last a lifetime and that’s great, I respect that, though it doesn't seem to benefit me the more I focus on what matters to me the most. I might give it a second chance because there have been plans on recruiting for next semester, though I doubt there will be new members coming in. WIsh me luck🤞

    Awh, I’m so sorry that happened to you. I was in a coed fraternity & my experience was one of the best things that happened in college. What happened to you WAS hazing! If your school doesn’t allow hazing you should report it because that’s not acceptable!

    Oh girl, i could have never been in a sorority, having to go by all those rules and having a girl boss me around, thinking she's better than me, oh hell no. O could never have the passion to do that

    Glad you made this video. Watching this as an European immigrant in her mid/late twenties who is contemplating going back to school, and playing around with the idea of being in a sorority precisely because I was never the type to want to join one. Figured it might potentially be a good way to get out of my comfort zone. After seeing a couple of "horror story" videos, it just confirmed my suspicions that not only is something like this not worth my time and energy, but even if I ended up joining one, I wouldn't last there long. I'd be too appalled and angry, and fight back, which wouldn't bode well for me socially. Blindfolded? Having phone taken away? H*ll no. Those are some of the hard boundaries taught in self defense - never let someone blindfold you or tie you up. Just because these are college kids and are supposedly doing it for the scare factor, doesn't mean that someone at some point won't do something stupid.
    I moved to the States from a Eastern European country as a teen, and even though I consider myself fairly well-acclimated to American culture, some aspects will always seem weird and unnecessary. To me, the whole concept of Greek culture seems is just another way for schools to make a profit under the guise of philanthropy and camaraderie. It's insane that fraternities and sororities continue to exist.

      I remember we did something in BBYO, a Jewish youth group that was like a sorority that we called “kidnapping”, but it was known with our parents permission. We blindfolded, but the driving was safe during the daytime, and it was always to someone’s house or a public restaurant. It was solely for the purpose of welcoming members in training or seniors to celebrate them. I wouldn’t consider that hazing at all. This was hazing.

    girl, no to all of this. if some bish told me take off my grandmother's bracelet, i would have fought her. also most all sororities are racist, i do not know how they get away with blatant racism. I'm sorry you went through all of this, it all boils down to power and money from alumni donors.

    My process was online so we never had to do things in person but they made us memorize a lot of things and we got quizzed almost every night on girls names, sorority facts and all that. I was ok with it at first but then they started asking for things off of their instagrams or stupid things, and we had one final formal quiz where they’d ask ridiculous things like “which sister really enjoys anal” or something and they were all allowed to laugh about it but all of us new members had to keep serious faces on it and we were told to take it seriously. Over time, it went from an education process to feeling like I was degraded by my “sisters”. I’m really thinking about leaving. I don’t wanna call it hazing but hazing comes in more forms than physical and idk what to do. Even now that the process is over, I’m still not really happy and there’s a lot we have to do that we weren’t really told about before we joined. I joined to make friends, but I’ve never felt so alone. Any advice?

      Hi sweetheart, thank you so much for sharing... What they are doing is absolutely inappropriate and is not ok. That is crazy. Please find the courage to report them. If you no longer feel like you will benefit from being a part of a sorority then I would leave. Fill your college memories with better ones girl 🥺 THINKING OF YOU

      Even if you’re not in the sorority you can still be friends with the ones you like. Why spend the money to be miserable. Sororities sound very controlling.

  • @chelsearivas4064

    No because I'm having the same issue except with the older sisters. I was never hazed thankfully but some of the girls tend to have hierarchy mentality especially the older sisters. I've though about dropping because I haven't felt I've bonded with the older sisters really what's keeping me in the sorority are my big and my line sisters. It's just upsetting because I've met people where they have their sorority sisters and they're like friends for life but it doesn't really feel that way.

    Thank you so much for doing this. The same thing you went through has happened to me - I literally had to drop because of it. Thinking of doing the same story time after some time- people really need to be aware of what they re getting into! Wish I knew what “hazing” was before I joined 😭

    I cannot understand the point of any of the things you talk about during the pledge process. It seems so cultish and dumb. But some college students practically live for it. Greek life is clearly for some people but wasn't for me. 43 fraternities where I went to college (considerably less today) and I would have zero interest in joining any of them.

    I became curious as to why different organizations ask for unofficial and official transcripts? Is it because some are national organizations? The sorority I'm interested falls under the MGC. Why can’t they check our gpa with the registrar’s office? Is the sole purpose of providing transcripts is to verify that oneself is on good academic standing gpa wise? Do they confirm their admission that our transcripts are real?

    • @medicinelee7119
      @medicinelee7119  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve never been asked to provide that before! That’s interesting!

    • @liamargolis8837
      @liamargolis8837 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve had this experience- in my experience it’s because they need to verify that you’re in good standing academic and judicial-wise with the school. So make sure you don’t have a history of violating school policies/academic probation, or having a GPA below the necessary average. Most of this is to check that you’re in a good space to handle more work with joining MGC
