I just turned 77 and am a prime example of why you CAN teach old dogs new tricks. I am fully immersed in modern quilt making. For most modern quilts, solids are the stars of the show. Even when I fall back to a more traditional quilt pattern with a traditional line of fabrics (florals for me) I must have two to three solids to pull together the entire look of the project. My daughter is a beginner quilter and I would love to win this bundle to give her "stash" a good solid jumpstart.
Just back from Ikea where i purchased several trofast storage bins to use in my Kallex unit ... Thanks for the tip ... I would not have known they fit in the kallex had i not watched your video!
I use those cheap light grey vitmossa fleece blankets to make design boards. In my country foam board and quilt batting is very very expensive so i cut up thick cardboard boxes into squares. Cut the blankets in squares a little bigger. Then i spread a little glue to attach the blanket and finish them by baste stitch or blanket stitching them with some bright colored crochet string. I have a stack of them in different sizes and it's really convenient for work in progress. I also have one i taped to the wall as a design board. In a pinch and also to practice FMQ I also use these cheap blankets as batting. They are great! I think they have recently been discontinued but there will be some other to replace them soon. I also store fabric and notions with the Trofast boxes. Thanks for the tips! 💕
Who doesn't love IKEA!!! It is a place you have to enter with an open mind because, as you have demonstrated, you can repurpose their items in many ways for your studio!
When I put my Raskog together I turned the top piece upside down so it’s a flat surface rather than a storage bin. I keep my serger on it next to my sewing table. I can wheel it around as needed. I store lots of sewing supples in the two spaces underneath.
Thank you for this info. I don't have an Ikea nearby, and on line shopping is hard. I'm always afraid things won't fit my space. You've given me some great ideas of where to look.
Quite a few years back I bought a kitchen island that has drawers from Ikea for my sewing room. I love it! I am also a big fan of Ikea for organizing this room.
I have a Rascog cart and I use a Linmon table top with legs as a cutting table. I also use Fluggis bins of different sizes to hold fabric, paper, and UFOs in my comination sewing room/ home office. I use spice racks to display decorative items. My next purchase will be a wide Alex drawer unit. Can't wait for that!
I am headed to Ikea to pick up some items for my quilt studio today! I did not know about the bins from the children's area working with the Kallax cubes! Thank you for the timely information!❤️
I have a tall narrow Alex drawer unit, Have had it for years and love it.. This weekend I am going to Ika to find some units to put my 4X4 foot ironing table on. You've given me some great ideas and options.
One room of our house is used for sewing/quilting/crafts or housing a guest. In it, I have 2 Alex units (one has a file drawer) that hold a desk top which is used for sewing supplies, watercolors, papercrafting/stamping, seasonal craft ideas in folders and basic tools. The sewing machine sits underneath it between the 2 Alex units when not in use and it works well to keep things contained but close at hand regardless of what I am working on. I have a couple IKEA canvas baskets that have wooden lids with a hole in the lid to allow for air flow which holds fabric for small projects. I covered a wood board with batting and fabric and put on a small dresser for ironing quilt squares. I used canvas duck cloth to make a sewing machine cover and imagine the IKEA fabric you mentioned would also work nicely for that.
I love my adjustable table large from IKEA. I can adjust the height by cranking it up so if I’m cutting it can be higher than if I’m sitting sewing. I can stand to sew now. Love it.
My husband added an IKEA small ironing board to the IKEA cart and now I have a “mini” ironing centre for quilting. Very handy to roll beside my machine for ironing during block making.
I love Billy- they are great for fabric storage! Deep enough for a layer cake but not so deep you lose sight of your fabrics. I think I might need a raskog!
I started a prayer quilt ministry at church, we have a dedicated space. We have the antonious units under our sewing stations along a wall, and placed table tops we made our own tops with plywood and 1/4 round molding on the edges. This way each sewer has drawers with supplies at each station. We also have some that are stacked and hold things like software for the machines.we also use the billy book cases with 1/2 glass half wood doors for fabric and quilt storage
I was VERY pleased to see three of your recommended IKEA items in my quilting area. Bookcase, wire bin unit and the Alex drawers. I may go and look for a tabletop and the plastic bins.Thank you.
Thanks for the info. I purchased the table with the adjustable height. I lower it to sew and raise it when I do my cutting. The other great thing about it is I was able to choose the size and finish of tabletop I wanted.
Very good tips ! Thank you. FYI: the Billy Bookcase has been around for over 40 years now! I have some of them from the 80s still in my apartment. 😅The quality was better back then , of course.
My sewing room is mostly IKEA. I use my Alex drawers for my serger. I have the ikea closet storage installed in my 2 closets- has adjustable shelving and roll out baskets. I use Kallex units placed vertically to hold books and bins of fabric.
I do many types of craft, my studio has heaps of Ikea items - Ivar shelves, 3 sets of Alex drawers on casters, a glass table top and trestle legs. I love them all
I miss Antonius! I have two in my bedroom closet with my scarves and sweaters and 5 in my sewing room for yardage, stacked in pairs. No wheels. They came with clips to hold units nicely together, and the frames had bumps in the top and dimples in the bottom which also help them stay stacked. I don't know about the newer ones but these are features to look for.
Lovely, lovely. Thanks for the names of the different collections! I do have my thread in drawers and so I put an “Ott” brand natural light by the drawers that I can hold near each open drawer to see the thread colors in the best light.
Great video. I’m going to ikea today. I had several of the items you mentioned prior to relocating but I learned about many new ones today. Thank you for the video
I love my "bekväm" spice racks with some added hooks. They´re great for storing scissors and smaller stuff like yarn rolls and pincushions or put in some rulers and templates.
I used two pegboards. One on the wall, and since I am short on space, one on one side of Kallax. I hang rulers and templates, scissors, rotary cutters, cups to hold pencils and markers, clear cups to hold clips, etc. Thanks for video.
Thanks, Kim! Such a good video. I think I enjoy organizing/preparing (even cleaning.. yes I need help) my quilt studio as much as actually quilting! Great items!
Great video! I just got two Alex drawer units and a table top for my sewing machine. Love it! Next on my wishlist is the kallax units and table top to make a cutting table.
My sewing room furniture is all from Ikea too! Unfortunately I don't live close to a store so I bought secondhand items locally which had the added benefit of being assembled, so more time for sewing. I cut french cleats from timber in my workshop and rotated vertical bookshelves to horizontal and hung them on the wall, just above head height when sitting at the machine, but still reachable. Patterns in storage baskets all live up there. When you have a small sewing room you have to be creative when it comes to storage. ;-)
Lots of great ideas! After a fun filled and busy day in my sewing room, I get to sit with my hand sewing and watch you. You are my treat. I hope you have a fabulous week ahead! Thank you for sharing this video!
hi! i use the norden dining table for my sewing table, when it's fully extended, i can have 2 sewer-s up at one time. I also own the tornviken kitchen island and i use that as my cutting table. kallax of course! and my future purchase, when they become available will be 3 liatorp cabinets for my fabric stash, with the overhang lighting on the top! thanks for this video, you have so many great ideas!
It would be awesome if that Alex Unit had actual drawers that can come out completely. To be able to take that drawer out and take it to a table and retrieve what you want is what I would love.
I use an Ingo table for my sewing table. Rekarne sofa Table holds my printer and scanner. My pressing station is a Norden sideboard. I have a Tarva nightstand for cookie cutter storage. All my templates are hanging on a Wall Control metal pegboard.
Terrific storage containers ideas for endless sewing supplies! Thank you so much for posting this video. I have already shared it with sewing mates-and look forward to following you.
IKEA is opening a store in Auckland, but it's been delayed by the pandemic. I'm hoping we'll get an outlet in Christchurch. I've really missed IKEA since I moved here from the UK.
I have several Billy bookcases with full glass doors in my sewing room that I store fabric and plastic drawer units to store sewing notions. I love these. I also have the drawer units with a large table top set over them for my cutting area. I also have an upholstered rolling chair for my sewing machine area. Ikea items work great!
I love my adjustable table/desk from IKEA. With the touch of a button, I can raise or lower to accommodate my needs, wheterh Im sewing, embroidering, cutting, planning, or if I just need to change position. The IDASEN frame is very sturdy-enough for my machine in 1000 stitch per minute embroidery mode. You can choose frame colors, table top color and size. You can order it with the electric adjuster and can be anywhere from 24” to 50” high. It can be ordered without adjustable unit, but you still would get to choose the fixed height between 24” and 30.”
I have the Idasen sit/stand table and love it. I have at least 7 Raskog carts around the house for various things - you can never have too many! The IKEA in Seattle no longer carries their awesome fabric. I was so upset when I found out. I also had to call in my husband, Victor to show him your cute kitty.
Love my Expedit (no Kalax), and the fabric bins for my fabric. Also have 3 Alex wider units stacked in a tower, a narrow Alex under a table. I have two carts but found another similar at Michaels a little wider. Love the idea of those little cups to hook onto them, need to pick a few of those up next time I go. IKEA is about 3 hours from me. Love IKEA though.
I buy 100% cotton duvet covers to use as backs for my quilts; excellent quality, excellent value AND they come in all sorts of colours. I cut the washing instructions off and see it onto my quilts (those I make for others).
When I converted the loft into my sewing room, I used and love the Kallax . My husband and a friend helped me. They made a laminated table top, which I laid two wide cutting mats on.
I'm on the west coast and the nearest Ikea is 6 hours away :-( I wish we had one closer! I would love to use some of the storage units in my sewing studio.
The stores ship to your home if they have less than 6 units in the store, then over-the-phone shipping is the only way to purchase it anyway. I live 250 miles away and would have had to go to 3 stores to buy the 4 units I wanted. The shipping cost me $25.00. It was so economical. If there was something I didn’t want I can bring it back!
I use the Ragrund next to my sewing machine. It looks like a towel rack on the back of a chair. I hang my finished quilt tops on it to inspire me to finish them. and use the chair for storage.
I have 3 narrow Billy bookcases in my sewing room. Two hold my yardage and AccuQuilt cubes and dies. One is used for precuts, panels, and kits. As well as my CDs for my stereo. I have two other cubbies that I use for holding packs of batting, my patterns, embroidery hoops, stabilizers, empty bags, blanks for embroidery, and freezer paper. I bought those before I found IKEA. I also have a garage work bench to use with the AccuQuilt cutter. I store the long dies under it in the large wire storage racks. I also have two large bins with yarn stored here. I also have an inexpensive cutting table that is starting to get rickety. I sew on a 6 ft. plastic table which shimmies like crazy if I go to fast. I want to get the pegboard from IKEA to hang some of my tools in different parts of the room. We have stopped going into stores for the time being, so will try and get to IKEA when Covid slows down and look at some of your suggestions. I really need help organizing the room and your suggestions sound wonderful. Thanks for all the advice. I appreciate all your advice.
I love the Antonio’s bins and as I am short on floor space my husband cut the metal runners off the base and mounted them in my wall shelving. The metal baskets now slide into the wall unit and I can see all my pretty fabrics. The baskets are easily removed to pick from ,then put back. Great ideas!😍👍
I have a couple of Ikea items you didn't mention. One is a DVD shelf for fat quarter storage that is about as tall as my closets and fits the narrow wall space between two closets. The other item is metal wall-mounted magazine holders with 5 pockets for magazines. I have 3 of these hung vertically on the wall.
Yes, I'e heard of using the DVD unit for that type of storage although I don't have any of these in my studio. Good idea for the magazine holders but that wouldn't be nearly enough for all of my magazines 😉🤣 Watch for another Ikea video coming out on February 1.
Just bought 3 nordli dressers to fit under my long arm table replacing some metal kitchen storage units which started to look a little untidy. I also have a large kallex which I purchased second hand. You inspired me to look at the billy bookcase. Thanks for your video.
I’ve been looking at the Kallhall Gateleg table to be used as a cutting and sewing table. I checked one out in IKEA and it seems very stable. Unfortunately, there are not any in stock in my area. But you may be interested in checking them out.
I made my pressing surface same size. It sits on a wicker unit that has two tiers below. It is by my machine. I love the size. I found some canvas/duck curtains at thrift store. It stays put on the linen surface of my board. Just remove and launder. All of my items in my sewing room are conscripted from stuff I had from staging all of which I purchased used. Thanks for these great ideas.
What are you using to cut materials?? Also I have XL clear containers at least 6 full of containers filled with quilting materials of Christmas material and 2 of those wire drawers on wheels, I make Christmas ornaments for my grandchildren and quilts, never know how much I need material. I have a Billie bookcase with clear doors, that is filled with my Santa collection, love Christmas, my tree is up for at least 1 1/2 years. I can’t work too much, due to I tore my right shoulder from cutting material, can you help with any idea’s ?
My cutting surface is the Martelli Advantage table and it comes with a very large cutting mat. I use their rulers and ergonomic cutters to cut my fabric. Die cutters, such as the AccuQuilt GO! and others are helpful if you struggle with cutting.
I am curious about your lovely lavender cutting mat. Where can I get one like it? I often find it hard to see the edges of my fabric on the green ones. Thanks.
This is a Martelli cutting mat. It's purple on one side and yellow on the other so it's great to use for any colour of fabric. You can find out more about it and their other amazing products at bit.ly/martellicode. (I'm a Martelli affiliate and might receive a small amount of compensation if you order items through this link. Thanks you!).
Yes! You could use fabric bins - Ikea does have some of those that work in the Kallax units. You could also make your own - lots of tutorials on TH-cam for this. You could also use wooden boxes/crates or cardboard boxes (cover them with fabric or wrapping paper so they look nice). Just a few ideas for other than plastic.
Hi Kim, can you tell me how far the Alex drawers pull out. I would like to store large embroidery thread in new drawers. The one I have now , the drawers are not deep enough and don't pull out far enough because I have to pull them out and remove some thread to see what colour are at the back of the drawer. THANKS Pauline
Your best bet is to check out the dimensions on the Ikea website for your country. They don't pull all the way out - I have cones in them and yes, you have to dig a bit at the back.
I'm not sure about that as it depends on the size and weight of the quilt (depends on batting). I don't use these myself but know other quilters who do and they do have finished lap-size quilts held up with these clips.
Hi Lynda: I'm not sure what bundle you are talking about - I don't do giveaways on my channel.
Just back from Ikea where i purchased several trofast storage bins to use in my Kallex unit ... Thanks for the tip ... I would not have known they fit in the kallex had i not watched your video!
This is great run down of items. I would love to see a tour of the actual space with these pieces at work.
I'll keep that in mind for a future video!
Thank you we are building a new sewing room and this was a great help
Glad it was helpful!
Hi! I love to hear people talking about IKEA modules and products. My entire studio is IKEA. Love the place love the versatility of their products
Ivar units are also very flexible 😊
Who doesn't love IKEA!!! It is a place you have to enter with an open mind because, as you have demonstrated, you can repurpose their items in many ways for your studio!
When I put my Raskog together I turned the top piece upside down so it’s a flat surface rather than a storage bin. I keep my serger on it next to my sewing table. I can wheel it around as needed. I store lots of sewing supples in the two spaces underneath.
What a great idea…very clever!
Billy Bookcases are my favorite!
I have a small sewing room. A few years ago I purchased the adjustable white saw horses and the wood table top for my cutting table. I love it!
Sounds great!
Thank you for this info. I don't have an Ikea nearby, and on line shopping is hard. I'm always afraid things won't fit my space. You've given me some great ideas of where to look.
You are so welcome!
Quite a few years back I bought a kitchen island that has drawers from Ikea for my sewing room. I love it! I am also a big fan of Ikea for organizing this room.
Great idea!!
Thank you so much for your recommendations. I have never shopped at IKEA but will definitely go there now that we have a store her in Mexico.
I use the Ikea peg boards and accessories.
I just purchased a kitchen island as my cutting and ironing area. It haz 2 full shelves for storage also.
I am headed to Ikea to pick up some items for my quilt studio today! I did not know about the bins from the children's area working with the Kallax cubes! Thank you for the timely information!❤️
Have fun!

What table is that? I'd love to have one.
I've been looking at this and the electric one. Have you had any trouble with the crank? Has it held up well?
I use 2 Hemnes dressers back to back as a cutting station. It fits 2 large mats on top. And lots of drawer space for storage. ❤️
Great idea!
I have been using Ikea products for a long time and love them all.
Me too!!
I have the Kallax, 3 different sizes, Billy book case, in my sewing room. I don’t know what I did without them. Skc
Cool! Several ideas for my home office/knitting room
Thanks for the video and the ideas. Subscribed.
I love their pegboards to hang my rulers and embroidery hoops
My husband added an IKEA small ironing board to the IKEA cart and now I have a “mini” ironing centre for quilting. Very handy to roll beside my machine for ironing during block making.
I have the Jonaxel system (I believe it's the Antonius replacement), and use it to store my fabrics and paint supplies.
I have the Alex and love it.
I love Billy- they are great for fabric storage! Deep enough for a layer cake but not so deep you lose sight of your fabrics. I think I might need a raskog!

I have some of them from the 80s still in my apartment. 😅The quality was better back then , of course.
But the widths have changed a bit over the years. I want to add the extra shelf unit to some that I have, but the ones in the store don't fit.

Great video. I’m going to ikea today. I had several of the items you mentioned prior to relocating but I learned about many new ones today. Thank you for the video
I have several Kallax (4 cubes) shelves in my sewing room.
I have the Kallax shelves and love them but I also have the magnetic knife rack and use that with my scissors
Helpful info! Thanks so much!

I live 250 miles away and would have had to go to 3 stores to buy the 4 units I wanted. The shipping cost me $25.00. It was so economical. If there was something I didn’t want I can bring it back!
I love to organize! Thanks for the info.
You are so welcome!
You must have a lot of space!
I don’t have an IKEA near me!😢. But I can go to one near my son’s in Virginia!
Great storage ideas, I may have to go to IKEA in the next little while
You should!
Great reviews for IKEA. I’ve been eyeing up a Rostov cart !
It's so good!
I also have the Tornviken island.
I wish there was an ikea near me. I would love to redo my sewing room
Thank you
Just bought 3 nordli dressers to fit under my long arm table replacing some metal kitchen storage units which started to look a little untidy.
Great idea!
I have to go to Ikea now!
Thank you for all your Ikea tips. I love that background behind you! Is that fabric? If so, can you tell me which line?
Yes, it's a wide back - not sure of the fabric line as I've had it for several years and it's been "modified" for the background.
Raskog is in the kitchen section. It is considered a kitchen cart... tho no one uses them in the kitchen :-)
Thank you. How is the counter in front of you, made?
I'm not sure which counter you mean - perhaps the table I have in front of me? If so, this is a Martelli Advantage table.
Any suggestions on storage that isn't plastic?
I have a magasin rack on the wall for my rulers
Hi Kim, can you tell me how far the Alex drawers pull out. I would like to store large embroidery thread in new drawers. The one I have now , the drawers are not deep enough and don't pull out far enough because I have to pull them out and remove some thread to see what colour are at the back of the drawer. THANKS Pauline
Your best bet is to check out the dimensions on the Ikea website for your country. They don't pull all the way out - I have cones in them and yes, you have to dig a bit at the back.
Would the curtain rod with the rings with clips be able to hold up a finished quilt for display?
Thank you.
I'm not sure about that as it depends on the size and weight of the quilt (depends on batting). I don't use these myself but know other quilters who do and they do have finished lap-size quilts held up with these clips.
