    I love my Norden Gateleg Table which I purchased when the Burbank, California IKEA opened its new store a mile from my home. I purchased it to use as my art table. Now I'm glad to learn that it is also perfect for a sewing table. Thank you for your comments. My late husband assembled my table using his battery-powered tools. I stood by and handed him pieces as he directed. I am 5'0" and have always used the kitchen table for cutting out dress patterns. Because of your comments, I am considering getting a portable kitchen island to use for my cutting surface. It will be a most welcome present for my upcoming 75th birthday.

      I use a tornviken island for my cutting and work table. I love it, but given your petite stature i think it would be too much for you to manage by yourself. Since you have the benefit of a store nearby you should definitely take advantage of that and go see in person what you like. I like the larger table top but you might be able to use something small perfectly fine. Especially if you work mostly with fat quarters or other precuts. You might consider a different table for sewing and convert the norden to your cutting and prep station. I personally could see adding another norden to my setup to have another station for prepping.

    You're too much girl!! My husband got to wondering what I was watching that was so funny. I told him it was the girl who suggested the kitchen island. He said he was so glad I already had a nice sewing table cuz he wasn't ready for another IKEA project just yet and he's a carpenter by trade!!🤣 I have a waist high, butcherblock workbench that's 6 ft × 30 inches. I keep my sewing machine on one end and my wool ironing pad on the other. Mel surprised me with a tall office chair so now I can cut fabric, spin my chair around and sew. It's working out nicely. Can't wait to see what you're up to next!❤

    This is an incredibly helpful review, thank you! I'm disabled by covid, haven't sewn in ages because I can't keep moving the machine off and on the dining room table anymore. Considering moving to a new house and I saw this table come up mentioned by other sewers and your review answered all my questions. I can't go into the store because I'm shielding and nobody masks up except for us shielders anymore, so having these questions answered in the video and seeing you interact with it really helps me stay safe at home. That's hugely valuable to the medically vulnerable population. Also being able to warn my partner that the build is heavy and intensive means we can thoughtfully plan for it for when he has the time and energy. This is possibly the best furniture review I've ever seen. Also I agree, the wipeable IKEA white surfaces are great. Last year I put a small Kallax unit here on my desk in the kitchen and it's so wipeable. As lifelong IKEA fans I know this about the white veneer so I absolutely agree with you about this feature. Wood veneers are pretty for bedrooms but for crafting, always go for the white. FWIW the white also works for bathrooms for the same reason; we've used one of those ancient Benno CD towers as super-narrow-fit bathroom shelves for over a decade and only now is there starting to show the slightest bit of heavy-traffic wetness wear. Thank you for all of this and happy IKEA living/sewing to you!

      I'm so happy it helped you Kimberly!! I still love this table and basically leave it set up all the time. It's perfect for sewing and I use it constantly. I hope you feel better soon and I'm sorry to hear you still need to mask. I personally haven't worn them since fall of 2020, and I can't imagine going back to them. I've had to wear them here and there to get through doctor's checkups because they required it, but even the doctor's offices here don't require them anymore. I haven't been sick even in the worst of it, and I'm super grateful for that. I hope your health improves in the new year.

    I have had the Norden Gateleg table since November of 2019, and I think I may have recommended it to you, Patty, after seeing one of your videos. I love the table in my sewing room. I have limited space and this is the perfect solution. Mine is the natural birch finish, which I love. Yes, its heavy to move. Yes, there are lots of pieces to assemble. Fortunately, I have a partner who is adept at assembly. Their directions are spot-on; well organized and we were totally impressed at how well it went together if you follow the directions to the letter. We began assembly downstairs, on an area rug; and soon realized that we needed to take it partially assembled upstairs to my sewing room or it would have been a struggle to move up a flight of stairs when fully assembled. It was fun for us to to put together (3 hours) - kind of like a well organized puzzle. It is a wonderful sewing table....very sturdy, no jiggling when the sewing machine is in use. The drawers are wonderful storage for sewing tools. So nice to have the option to put the leaves down and tuck it away when my sewing room becomes our guest room! I am still in love with it!

      Oh gosh, William....maybe you did put the suggestion in my ear! It's a great table for sure! I love mine and even though it's still tucked up against the wall, I know that in 5 minutes flat I can be set up again and ready to sew! The birch is soooo pretty. I really wanted that one but it never came back in stock and I grabbed this one when it came in. I do like the white for my small space and for sewing but the birch is a gorgeous table.

The drawers are quite deep and fit cords, pedals, serger thread, and more. I have the natural wood one which (if you can find it) is great because it's solid wood, comes pre-finished, but can be refinished if ever necessary. It'll last me a lifetime, I'm sure! I love this table. I found an earlier model second hand which only has 2 drawers, but I wanted as a cutting table. We had some large caster wheels with brakes, which my husband added to the legs and also added extensions to the supports making it taller.. I don’t need to wheel it very far so these work well and as it is narrow when folded it tucks away into a small space.

    I have this exact table in white also. I found on the Ikea site that they allowed you to pick online your store and request a notification when the item was back in stock. Once it was in stock, I could order and pay online and pick it up in the store, or have it shipped locally. I chose to have it shipped locally to my daughters house, so I could pick it up on the weekend since I live two hours away from the store. The table is definitely worth the effort. I did use an electric drill and didn’t think it was that bad to assemble. I do read directions, in advance ,and I took my time. I got it together in an afternoon. I put mine on wheels so that makes moving easier also. A great space saver.

    I love IKEA. You don’t need to have mega expensive stuff. Nearly all my furniture is IKEA and it looks good, cleans well and is sturdy. I love that table, I’m lucky enough to have a room which I can use for my sewing and I have two tables/desks from IKEA in my sewing room with a couple of sets of cheap mesh drawers and a three tray trolley which fit under the tables. This table is great especially if you need to use main areas of the house for sewing. Great review.

      Thank you Janet! I completely agree with you. I got rid of several old, wood pieces we've had for decades to make space for the new items I put together. And at first it felt so wrong to ditch wood furniture for inexpensive Ikea pieces. But the old pieces were just stuff to sit around and put decorations on. Useless in terms of what I need in my present life. The new items look great in the space and organize tons of items that I couldn't organize before. I'm a convert to Ikea and absolutely love the pieces I've invested in. I appreciate hearing your story.

    I love this table!! Ikea is a ways off & would be a struggle for me, but I LOVE this table. I use my dining table & a sturdy folding table that stays up all the time for my big heavy machine. I cut on a Joann cutting table that folds. It's much taller. I actually bought it years ago at a Hancock's fabric store which closed for good. I keep an extra long cutting mat on it, so it stays up all the time except at holidays.

      We used to have Hancock too! Sad to lose them. 🥺 before it opened here, the closest ikea was 4 hours away. The worst part is that it’s located in northern VA just outside of DC so the traffic is HORRIBLE and it feels so unsafe up there. We used to drive up and stay over a night, but I would not feel comfortable doing that anymore so I’m extra grateful they opened here and I can go anytime I want.

      I am so happy with this table!! I love to use it, and it looks great whether fully extended or tuck up against the wall. I have most of my cd music collection tucked in the lower drawers. They fit perfectly and the clutter is out of the way, so all sorts of things can be put away in those large drawers! I love hearing from others who are using it!

    100% behind you on the IKEA hot tip to check back everyday! Our local IKEA was out of a dresser we wanted for our nursery and people were selling their used ones for same price and some for even more on Facebook marketplace! Wild times for furniture needs. 🤪

      I saw that going on with desks!! People would go buy the stock and resell for double or triple! Fortunately, as soon as mine came back in to stock, I dropped everything and ran right over. They still showed it as out of stock on the showroom floor, but there were 3 left in the warehouse when I got there. The white version of the Alex desk is pretty hot, so I was super lucky to get it. It's eased up now, but I guess different items come and go in popularity. Yeah it's wild alright!

    Patty, I just wanted you to know that you are a blessing to me. I watch a couple of your videos everyday and you are just so relateable and gentle spirited! Your voice is soothing and I feel like you’re talking no-nonsense talk directly to me. Oh my goodness! What kind things to say. I genuinely appreciate such high praise, and I'm SOOO happy the videos feel that way to you. When I film myself, I think of the camera lens as a friend. I think of being at lunch with a dear friend and sharing some special thing that's going on or explaining to them something I'm working on and how they can do it, too. I truly do my best to be myself so if you met me browsing fabric somewhere, there would be no surprises. Thank you again for such a lovely comment.

    I was excited when I got 2 heavy, wooden topped, 6 foot conference tables off of Craigslist for $20 each. I can easily unscrew the legs when I need to store the tables, and my son showed up one day with wheels for them. I love the Ikea table, but anything new is out of my budget. You did such a good job showing your table, and describing the necessary skills and strengths to put it together.

      Thank you so much Dannie!! I try to be positive and optimistic, but also honest about these things. And I only share things I absolutely love and really use. Your tables sound amazing! I would not have any room for them in my house and I would not be able to easily move them by myself. I have to always think about what I can do on my own, because I'm it. And yes, it was an investment!! But I saved for it and I bought my pieces in different months and spaced it out. My channel bought and paid for everything, so for me it's part of running my online presence. Which is a completely different set of needs than a "normal" person would have. So I never want viewers to feel like there is pressure for them to ever do any of the extras I'm doing. I like to present a range of options for viewers and share what I'm doing in a particular moment. I appreciate you sharing your story, and your setup sounds fantastic! 12 feet of table length or all that width would be INCREDIBLE!!!

    I've had this table for about 18mths and use it for sewing. Brilliant for a home with limited space. Have to say I did purchase the solid birch table as having viewed both, Birch & White, in the Ikea showroom I noticed that the white one was showing signs of wear and tear on the edges (It's made from particleboard). Both the same price so decided to go with the more solid and stable version, which I have never regretted.

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The birch table is so beautiful! If I'd had the choice, I would have done the same. But it just never came into stock and I needed to get the table so I could move forward. I have come to love this one quite a bit and it still looks as good as new. It's so functional and I love when I have time to use it.

    Glad I found your channel! Your review is quite timely as I have opportunity to "design" a more updated sewing room in the near future. I've looked at the Norden Gateleg Table in our nearby IKEA store, but hadn't decided if I was ready to "give up" my makeshift 20+ year old hollow core door table. My husband mentioned that when I'm not sewing, I still use the extended surface for crafts, etc. Now I have an idea of how versatile the Norden can be! Thank you for sharing. Blessings

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much Pamela!! I love my table so much. If you put it on sliders it's easy to move around and it folds down to nothing if you need the space. And it has so much storage. I love this thing. If I had the budget, I'd buy a second one and have a machine on it's own table or just have the extended workspace. I would suggest you move pretty fast on it if you think you want one of these, however. Between inflation and shortages, I don't know how frequently the stock with replenish.

      My pleasure Carrie! This table gives you so many options for setting yourself up and sewing. And it's so easy to set up and take down and move around. This is a pretty solid little workbench. While once you figure out how it comes together, it is physically Easy to assemble th-cam.com/users/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh by yourself. But the diagrams explaining the steps are really pretty bad. I could not get the handle pins in all the way despite multiple attempts, so I just used a screw I had on hand for the 2nd handle. I could not get the first pin in further or pull it back out. You are supposed to hammer it in, but I had no leverage and the handle is plastic and I did not want to risk breaking it. I will get a lot of use out of the bench because of the convenient size and height. It does fold up nicely for storage. They even explain how to fold it so you don't get pinched...that is important!

    Hello! I just found your channel. I love your ideas regarding IKEA furniture. I’m a retired teacher and bought their corner table in white for my computer and another long table in white for my lesson plans, grading papers, student work etc. they worked perfectly. Now I’m using them for crafting and calligraphy. I love the versatility and the simplicity of this furniture. However, I don’t think I could tackle any of the pieces you mentioned. I’m just not able to get on the floor like I used to Lol! I’d have to have it assembled. The sewing table is perfect 👍🏻! Best regards.

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I totally understand Cynthia. That's why I split up the assembly on most pieces. Otherwise it's too much for me, too. The kitchen island is the most difficult thing I've ever done. It really challenged me! But the rest of it is not too bad. You can always put a beach towel on a table top and assemble the drawers there. I put together another raskog cart this afternoon and did most of it on a table top. I invested in a really nice set of screw drivers and they were amazing to use!! Now I need some new stuff to put together!!

    I have had this Norden table in white for 2 years now and I couldn't live without it. I live in a regional sea-side area in Victoria Australia and bought mine secondhand from a charity shop for $20! Only problem was I had to phone my husband to come and collect it in his 4WD. At least he didn't have to assemble it! With just one wing up it accommodates my sewing machine on the long side and my overlocker around the corner on the shorter side, at the back of the machine. I do open it fully if I am cutting out fabric but most of my stuff is smallish and I can sit down to cut out. It is so sturdy that when I first got it I was able to sit a 'bridge' chair on it, while I reupholstered it!

    Thanks for this review. I have been looking at this table here in UK but haven't been able to afford it yet, but soon. It will be perfect for pushing against a wall in my tiny home and I can put it up for cutting out fabric. I've nearly saved enough so I am getting excited. Moving it won't be a problem though it is heavy. I will put sliders under each foot and the gatelegs. I have done this for my weaving loom and the sliders make moving furniture on carpet so easy.

      You will love this table!! It seemed expensive when I first bought it, but now that I'm using it, it seems like great value for the investment. This looks great, Patty, functionally and esthetically. I certainly see the value of getting a piece of furniture designed specifically for sewing. I have repurposed my old Ethan Allen kitchen table that has a leaf, but no drawers. Plenty of space on the table top, but I need a set of drawers, so I have a plastic bin on wheels that sits under the table (and slides out) to hold my sewing extras. While my set up is technically functional, it's nothing beautiful to look at. Fortunately, it's in my craft room so it's not often visible to others. But yours, Patty,
    whether in use and not, looks beautiful. You made a good call when you selected it. Your whole spread there should be featured in a Home & Garden-type magazine to show how to get multi-use out of limited space. 😊 From Cheryl in AZ.

      Cheryl you are extremely kind!! LOL!! I'm definitely NOT a home a garden magazine candidate. I'm just a gal making the most of what I have. Moving my work space out to this part of the house is the smartest thing I've done in a while. The light makes filming and photography much easier on me so I'm able to share a lot more projects. Mostly it's functional for what I needed, but I still have work to do. I love this table and Ikea markets it for sewing and dining. It would be good for either, but I love it for sewing.

I have it up all the time except when I have a stay over visitor, then it gets folded for a bed to fit in the room. It becomes the bed head, so very useful. The only negative I have is the white edging around and the layer on top has lifted/separated from the unit. I did re-glue it but it has made it rough.

    I love Ikea stuff I don't have a lot but I really appreciate what I do have people that look down on Ikea are not only snobs but clearly haven't experienced the joy of their products

      Oh my gosh!! RIGHT??? Or extremely old fashioned. I love my items soooo much, and I can't imagine not having my Ikea products. They have helped me to organize tons of clutter and keep my sewing room streamlined. I keep the walking foot on the second machine and it's the best set up. It's efficient and I can just pick up and sew within minutes when I'm ready.

    I agree Patty regarding the supply chain being broken. Sheesh!! 🙄🙄
    Sooo i have painted and cosmetically upgradeda small 3rd bedroom at home for sewing and crafts. I got a traditional folding sewing table from a garage sale. Its on casters, can fold down to about half its length. Its 5' 3" long and only about 20" wide. But it works in my small space. I too have a small folding table. I still use my dining room table to cut fabric.
    Its always a work in progress. 👍😊

      @PattymacMakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh gosh Annette. It's pretty bad out there. I gently urged people to stock supplies while they can still get them a couple of videos back, but it's not something people wanted to hear. I know it's not the best news, but it's happening whether we like it or not. And I don't feel like I'm doing my job if I don't alert viewers to the issue and urge them to prepare for it. Apparently China is buying up the world reserve of cotton and I don't think it's to print quilting fabric for us. So who knows what that means for the fabric industry. It does not sound good to me, so my suggestion is a few years worth of supplies on hand. I know it sounds excessive, but these things will not resolve quickly or easily. You are so right about a space being an ever changing work in progress!! LOL

      @@PattymacMakes I do recall one video where you mentioned that. I for one am stocking up on basic universal fabrics, threads.. basics. I also am stocking up on some non perishable foods. Not crazy stocking.. but when something I use is on the shelves I buy 6 or more.. as often some things just are not there!
      Wishing you good health and peace.

    I bought a similar folding table, but not in IKEA, but in a regular furniture store (it was cheaper and much !!!), BUT what I spent additionally on was furniture wheels, like on bedside tables and completely put the entire table on furniture wheels - table frame and table top holders. As a result, he became taller and moves perfectly !!! Good luck with creativity. Moscow, Russia

      @@PattymacMakes Hey! I don’t believe in coincidences for a long time - you had an idea in your head and the Universe sent me to you to confirm all this. I will add this to my advice: the number of wheels should be exactly 8. Of these, 6 wheels only on the base of the table for proportional distribution of weight (my tabletop unfolded is 80 cm wide and 168 cm long) and 2 wheels for retractable stands for tabletops ... For this width of 80 cm, 6 wheels had to be distributed - 4 wheels were not enough (drawers of my table are 25 cm wide) and significantly added mobility. Good luck. I hug.
