I’m a big fan of mechanics’ wheeled tool chests for all my hobby tools and parts. They are designed with heavy duty large pull out trays and drawers of various depths which allow very dense and well organized storage in a given floorspace. We’ve even used stainless steel mechanics chests in our cottage kitchen for the same reason.

My son has worked in IKEA in the UK since he was 17. First thing he taught me was the Swedish way to pronounce the store name. I’m just getting into sewing so this vlog is really helpful, especially as my son who still lives with us gets an IKEA discount!

For my bobbins, I use foam toe separators (the ones salons use for doing your pedicure)
They keep the thread from unraveling and getting tangled from each other whether the bobbin is full or almost empty.
That is GENIUS and I'm borrowing it immediately!

I purchased huge cutting mats from a graphic art supplier. They’re used in many other industries and without the word ‘sew’ , they’re much cheaper! Congratulations on your next book, I’ll definitely be buying that one x

I started with one trolley now I have 3😊. 1 is for hand sewing to be wheeled to my armchair when I am watching telly. One is for patchwork tools, and notions it has all the rulers hanged on one side and an Ikea ironing board on the other. 3rd one has all basic sewing tools in. I love how you organised your space.

You can buy magnetic sheets and cut them to the size and shape you need, attach them with glue to all kinds of things, and then "stick" them on your trolley, essentially expanding the amount of storage space you have. One idea would be, depending on how many packs of sewing machine needles you have, you could attach a magnet to the back of each pack and stick them all around the outside of each tier for easy access. You could also cut a magnetic sheet to the size of your drawers and attach a magnet to one end of your spools of thread, again maximizing the space/storage of your drawers.

I cut 3 felt Ikea placemats in grey to fit each section of the trolley so that things don’t fall through the mesh surface. Really pleased with it 😁

Ikea sells small round metal containers which are magnetic. They can be found in the kitchen section. Great to adhere to the trolley and hold lots of small items, like clips, bobbins, pins, machine needles and feet.
I also collect patterns. I use one-gallon clear plastic ziplock bags to store each one. I have a cabinet with drawers labeled ”dresses, shirts, crafts, etc.” After I cut out the pattern, I can put it in a clear bag with the pattern front showing. This will protect your patterns from bugs like silverfish. This is the best idea I came up with after watching tons of TH-cam videos.
My trolly is the taller one. I made a pressing mat that fits over the top with a bit of storage under it for pressing clothes and then use the other sections for all of my pressing tools and products. It is a very handy pressing station and I can pull it out to use where I need it and even better, push it out of the way when I am not. Thank you for teaching me the proper pronunciations! I have been pronouncing Ikea with a long sounding "i' all this time. :)
Also, seeing the Kallax in use is helping me visualize the dimensions for my own space and needs. Sometimes the measurements alone aren't enough to get a real feeling for the size of things, so that was very helpful. Thank you. :)
👋! I ordered the Gutermann thread tower, it holds 80 colours, with room add 2 more matching spools for a total of 240 spools! It spins, and has a small footprint on your table. Love it!😊
For your thread storage - perhaps a piece of regular peg board cut to fit the drawer bottom. Then use wooden dowels cut into the length you want, then pressed into the pegboard holes with a little wood glue. You could store your bobbin threads on top of your spool threads.
I use my trolley next to my sit down Bernina Q20 - store thread on the bottom, rulers in the middle and the top Is for things I need nearby (and a beverage) within reach. Absolutely love it. Also you can attach magnetic things to it!
I use wooden golf tees pushed through large holed plastic canvas, the advantage is that you can move the golf tees around if you have larger spools.
I use Dollar Tree foam core board and golf tees 👍🏼

I love that you treated yourself to the Kallax system as a congratulations gift! Well deserved! I use all of the same items in your tour but I don't have any of those lovely drawers in my Kallax. I'm definitely going to see if my local IKEA has those in stock. I use my Råshult trolly for my project in progress. I like that it keeps all of my pieces and notions together and I can move it to whatever area I'm working in. I keep extra scissors and rulers, basic tools in the lower tray. I'm starting another pair of jeans today, using your tutorials and inspiration and getting TOOO excited about receiving my copy of your book. :-D

I love your sewing spot. Looks like you have everything at yr finger tips. I use a lot of clear plastic boxes from Walmart’s fishing department. Plano makes a nice box as well as other brands. Most of mine have tiny slots and dividers. You can put the dividers in any of the slots, that way you can customize each section to fit your thread. Each of my boxes is labeled according to brand of thread and use. My thread spools are on their sides so I can find the color I need quickly. For general sewing, I have a light color box of thread and a box for darker colors. These boxes in fishing department are a bargain, much cheaper than divider boxes at fabric or craft stores.

I love my spoolpods from Patterntrace. They fit gutterman thread and a bobbin to match, 10 per pod. They fit perfectly in the drawers of my Ikea Norton drop-leaf table, 10 pods in one drawer, that’s 100 spools and bobbins neatly stored and coIour coded. I got a drop-leaf table as my sewing space is in my spare bedroom so I sometimes need to put everything away. Another tip although not about storage, patterntrace also make foundation piecing paper which is brilliant for printing pdf patterns.
I use the Nissafors trolley which is my sewing "room" I store my sewing machinge in the top shelf and have my notions, sewing gadgets, patterns, and buttons on the lower shelves in various boxes and bins. My rulers and curves are on a hook on one side and I've repurposed the Ikea sewing kit (which I got years ago) to hold my scissors and rotary cutters. This hangs from another hook on the side as well. I have several storage bins for my fabric stash.
When I'm actually sewing, all my equipment is nearby. When I need to tidy up because of a meal or other table use, I can easily move my machine and all the sewing stuff on to the cart. this has save countless arguments with my neatnik partner. If he needs to tidy when I'm not around, he knows that sewing equipment goes on the trolley.
Thanks for the tour of your sewing space. It's massive compared to mine. I live with a teen boy and my partner in a little more than 60 square meters (650 sq feet) Every inch is utilized
I have seen several sewers use spice racks that go in drawers for thread. The spools lie tilted on little shelves in the drawer. Looks like it works well.
I have one of the mini tabletop ironing boards. It needs a bit more padding but is very handy in a small space!
I got the mini one from ikea and I can sit it on top of my trolley. As you said it can do with more padding but I think it cost $8 so I can’t complain 🤣
If you get magnetic tool holder bars, Amazon sell packs of three for under £10, you can screw them to the wall to hold tools. I also use them to temporarily hold plastic bin bags under the edge of my cutting out table, they can also be slipped into a sleeve on the back of a cloth basket to attach to a magnetic whiteboard or other magnetic surface. Cutting table is covered with a magnetic whiteboard, gives a flat surface, I use magnetic skittle pins instead of pattern weights on top of my cutting mat. The whiteboard is a lightweight replacement for my previous mdf cutting surface which was too heavy to move easily. Can act as a design board when stored vertically.

I recently created thread storage using pegboard and golf tees. Super easy and It worked great! I found that I had to glue the tees on the under the pegboard so that I could move it I to place in the drawer.

I use the trolley for everything related to ironing...hams, spray starch, pressing cloths, various pokey tools for turning, hemming tapes, etc. I have a tiny space.
Do you have a large or small one?
I've bought inserts for my Kallax system. They come in kit form, precut from eBay, lasersmith. Worth a look.

Instead of the "nail" system, I used thin dowel rods that I cut to size and glued into holes I drilled in the board.

I purchased a container for all my threads at a store in the states called joann. The brand is ArtBin and the container is super satchel box with removable thread trays. I am able to put the bobbin under the spool and store all matching threads together. I have also seen items for sale that are plastic trays with the posts for the threads.
I have the THYGE table from IKEA as a cutting table and I found an industrial cutting mat supplier locally who cut me a mat to size. The price was slightly cheaper than buying regular mats and trying to piece them together to fit. It is clear mat so no markings on it but I can still put a regular mat on top if necessary when making bias binding etc. I love the drawer inserts for the Kallax and have been considering getting a couple.
I also have the Kallax system in my sewing room. I like your channel sooooo much. I discovered it only a vew weeks ago and it is a pity that I didn't found your channel sooner. You are using the Bernina 1230. I have this sewing Maschine for more then 33 years, and it is such a great Maschine.
The golf pegs work. I hot glued them down and it works great

For your spool drawer. It would be nice if your pins are long enough to hold both a spool with a bobbin of the same thread sitting on top of the spool. I've seen one sewer who held her bobbins to each spool with an elastic loop, the type people use to hold their hair.
I've gotten so used to hearing people mispronounce Ikea names that I was shocked to hear someone pronounce Skådis correctly (just discovered your channel)
Golf tees with some hot glue would be perfect for your thread project 👍🏻😉they absolutely fit as my mother in law puts the bobbin on top of the thread with golf tees to keep them stored together. 🧵As for your trolley, you can use the shelves to store your projects, keeping all the pieces together until your finished. Also I find he top shelf great for most used tools, keeping them handy at your fingertips ☺️
I would drill holes to match the size of dowel sticks. Ive done this on a peg board. It also allows you to have more than one spool for multiple colors. I use ferre roche chocolate clear plastic boxes to keep my threads in. I group the boxes by colour.
Tracy Frost you too? Also (though not quite as good) I use the containers one gets cotton tip sticks in.
I use a board drilled with 1/4" holes into which I glue 2-3/4" dowels to hold my thread spools. I handle in the middle makes the whole thing portable and there is even room for other sewing notions.
I was interested when you mentioned your Jeans book in passing, as my new copy is right beside me. I've read it through once, and will be following it closely as I make some jeans for my husband. And since I'm reorganizing my sewing things, I'm also very interested in all the things you point out in this video.

I have two trollys, one for my sewing items, and one for my iron items, with a small ironboard on top for little things when i am sewing that needs to be irond out ... next to my sewing machine .......great solution for me...
For your thread you could get traditional peg board and cut it to fit the bottom of the drawer and then put nails into the underside thru the holes and hot glue them into place. If you have enough height then you could use golf pegs for it doing the same thing.
Sulky.com has wonderful thread storage boxes with the pegs built in. They are very sturdy and travel well also. I have four of them.

You could use dowel pegs for your threads. You could use styrofoam base and poke dowels into it

I glued an LED light strip around the back edge of my Skadis pegboard. You can't see it, but when it lights up it's the PERFECT desk light for sewing at night. Plus you can get one that changes colors :)
Can use a soft board of the size of the drawer and put the nails in it. This is to store the spools of threads. This way you will not damage your drawer too.

I found some long golf tees that I hot glued into the back of a peg board. I cut the board to the dimensions of my IKEA desk drawer. For most threads I can fit a spool as well as the matching bobbin on the same peg. However, taller spools like Gutterman 1000m use up the entire peg and then I have a stack of bobbins on a different peg, which is not ideal. The height of the pegs just fits into the drawer system so well though.
I see your brown pattern pieces in the background, and I'd love to know exactly what they are and how you use them. Can you demo these soon?????
Plastic drawer inserts with pegs for thread are definitely a thing that have existed, my Grandma has one. You should be able to find one somewhere, though I don't know how many sizes are available.
I would use the trolley for current and upcoming projects
As far as the nails go..... You could take a seperate piece of board, put the nails through it, use shrink wrap plastic to heat fix to the nails and drop that board into a draw. It saves the drawers, the nails are safer to use and you can change it anytime quite easily.
Yesterday I saw some plate dividers Which intrigued me.
Oops. The plate dividers were wooden with wooden dowels as dividers. Seemed like they might work as thread holders.
There are wooden spool holders like you have on your wall. Find one that fits or cut one to size and remove the back easel stand or hanging hardware, simply place it in your drawer.

Loved the ideas! I began using some Ikea pieces about 14 years ago and they gave been great. One if my favorites is the tall wooden CD towers that reach to the ceiling. I have 2 of them and use them to put fat quarters in. I have my fat quarters sorted by color, except for some novelties that I store together. It's important to me to be able to see the fabrics so that they can easily be used. During this time of mask making my fat quarters have been invaluable!

Have a look at “spoolpods” for storing thread.
I think thread on pegs on the wall are easier to see but in drawers I think clear bins and nest them. The bins should be low profile since you would want to be able to see the colors at a glance instead of the tops of the spool. My opinion. I have mine in clear shoe boxes by color. No knots if you wind them back and catch the thread in the spool end.

I bought Sauder cabinets. I have a lot of fabric, this hides everything! Easy to put together. I have two beautiful ikea butterfly tables. When you want big, they open up. When you want small, they close. I only buy clear plastic contains so you can see what is in there.
Paisano's Roost Farm in Southern New Mexico: I have some Ikea items in my sewing space: Norden sideboard that is my pressing station, Ingo Table is my sewing table, Tarva nightstand with a Moppe chest on top. Skadis came out too late for my sewing space instead I have a Wall Control board www.wallcontrol.com/pegboard/ . I use a Rekarne sofa table for my peripherals. My main problem is the closest Ikeas are either 8 or 12 hours away from my New Mexico farm. When we lived in Kansas, Ikea was 2 hours away. My trips to Ikea are limited to when I visit family in Texas.
What are you using to hang the brown paper patterns?
How about cutting dowels and making holes as you did for the nails but insert into another peg board and store flat into the drawers. You may be able to store bobbins the same way.
That would look really neat if I cold find narrow enough dowels to fit the spools. Will investigate!
@@Thelaststitch Perhaps Bamboo skewers? Cheap and a good dowel size for bobbins.
I agree wholeheartedly with the dowel idea or if you can’t find skinny enough dowels, try bamboo kabob skewers. Cut off the pointed ends and measure the length you need allowing for the depth of the bottom of the drawer or a very slightly smaller piece of 1/4” plywood or even foam core. It would look much neater and more importantly be much safer than the nails.
I just did my system using the longer 3.25 golf tees that i hot glued into clear acrylic boxes. I love them, easily fit a spool and matching bobbin on each tee!
What is the device you have your patterns hanging on in the corner next to your peg board?
For the spool thing.. find someone with a 3d printer.. there are a lot of 3d files for spool holders, and you can even make them the size of the drawer

I have seen plastic clear containers with pegs for spools... Idk where to buy them I saw someone had it in a sewing group on fb.
I use the ikea Helmer drawer unit for my thread spools, as I like to just glance and see the colors. I lay them down on their sides, so I can see the color I want at a glance. When they are on a spike, I have to take them off to see the color
For the spools you could use craft dowels they make them in different sizes and you could just drill holes and hot glue them in or use wood glue. I did this to make spool holder from MDF to hang on the wall. Works just like the spool holders you see at stores. Very easy and cheap and customizable if you want to paint or stain them. Congrats on your new book! :)
What are hanging uou patterns on?
I purchased from Ikea a table that collapses on each side so that I can collapse the side(s) when not in use for more space. I don't have much floor space because of how the doors,windows and closet are arranged so this works well for me. It does contain 6 drawers as well, the only problem is that three are on the back and difficult to access.

How high is the cutting table?
Use peg board and wood dowels that fit in holes in peg board. Cut peg board to fit in drawer and then cut wood dowel to length needed. Place dowels into holes to fit spools. If you don’t glue the pegs they will be adjustable. If the peg board takes up too much room in the drawers, just drill holes in the drawer bottom and then glue in wooden dowels into the holes.
