    It would've saved you a bunch of time if you would've used a stringline from corner to corner to mark your notch. If you have a level point to go off of, no point in going to each one individually with a story pole, you can just go to each one and mark the stringline. But you had all good ideas, great video! I hope this project turned out well for you!

      Thanks. The one reason I didn’t do a string line is I thought it may sag a tiny bit over a 64 foot stretch even if it’s zinging tight so I didn’t want to take any chances. It did out well though. Thanks

    Great work, did you buy the poles or made them yourself? I noticed that the posts are made of treated and non-treated wood of different lengths. Thanks,

    • @SmartEasyDIYer
      @SmartEasyDIYer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Yes I bought them that way. They are laminated together from the factory like that with different lengths to make them stronger. Mine were made by a company called triad. I think different companies make them. Thanks

    Danial Boone would see this with puzzlement and curiosity. I was always interested and they are made well; why didn't you choose this route. The log cabin route? When I was young I wanted a log built home, researched it at the time and the only way was to build it yourself; maybe other options but to costly. I wish I had the time at that time; I would have. I did check out the sample homes at the time 1980's unbelievable without a doubt. I Imagine even today; even if you do it yourself; no in the end it a better deal outcome. Your thoughts..

      Yeah it would’ve been cool to do. I actually did 2 with my dad a long time ago. For the stage of life where we are as material availability in our area it wouldn’t have been so easy to do. We also wanted to do this with steel siding for low maintenance. I’d love to have a small log cabin someday though too.

    Do you know the snow load this building is capable of/rated for? Did you get engineering/architectural drawings and analysis done on this structure? Im very interested in building in this style here in NH and my municipality requires 80 lb/ft snow load. In montana I'd assume you see as much or more snow so I supposed your structure is beating that snow load. But my building inspector is skeptical of structures that aren't built in the "traditional" or conventional styles local to us.

    • @SmartEasyDIYer
      @SmartEasyDIYer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I believe mine is rated for 80 pound foot snow load. Although I get more snow than some elevations the snow here is a lot lighter than your snow too. They did it based on my geographic location. You would probably have to get some thing done for your specific area that would make your inspector happy.

    2 by lumber doesn’t have consistent width. I have 2x8 that vary from 7 1/2” to 7 1/4”. What do you do to adjust?

    • @SmartEasyDIYer
      @SmartEasyDIYer  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d probably split the difference and go 7-3/8”.

    Would it make sense to use post protectors into the concrete??

    • @SmartEasyDIYer
      @SmartEasyDIYer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you certainly could. There’s different methods to do it nowadays. The options I saw weren’t available in my area when I did this but I would probably do the wet set bracket method nowadays.

    You may have covered this previously, but why are you post laminated rather that just pressure treat post?

    • @SmartEasyDIYer
      @SmartEasyDIYer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Where I live you can’t get regular pressure treated posts that are dimensional they are a full 6“ x 6“ so I decided to get these because they are 5 1/2 on the one dimension so they would be the same as my stud wall.

    why did you set the posts in concrete, are you not worried that they will rot in (a long) time? Would you not pour the concrete and then connect the pole to the concrete with a metal connector?

    • @SmartEasyDIYer
      @SmartEasyDIYer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I probably would do that next time. They weren’t readily available in my area when I did this. I think it varies by location what people do but here typically they always do concrete because of how the ground is.

      You’re welcome. It’s pretty handy cuz you can use it for a step ladder or a extension type ladder. It’s kinda heavy and awkward to extend it out but it works. My building is 36 x 64 x 10. I actually put the materials together myself and got them form several different local places. The truss place had the posts and trusses the lumber came from a local lumberyard that carries a better grade of lumber and the steel roofing came from a local place too.
