  • It took three tries to get it figured out, but we finally got all six posts notched in preparation for installing the white oak 2X12's that we cut on the Frick sawmill a couple of weeks ago. This took way more time than I thought it would, but it required a lot of sawing and three attempts to find a process that worked ok and was reasonably fast. Fortunately, the hot, humid weather finally changed, so we're not outside in the typical Maryland summer! We cut the headers(2X12's a few weeks back, here is a video of that. • Making some 2X12's out...
Please give this a thumbs up and hit subscribe! And, I'm not a woodworking type, so if you have a better solution to notching these 200 pound posts out please let me know!
    Thanks for watching!

I’m getting ready to set 8x8x16 posts. Just wondering how many bags of concrete per hole?

Hi Craig, I think that depends how big your hole is. We dug ours by hand, so most holes took two 60 pound bags, then we filled in the rest with dirt. A few ended up too big and took a few more bags.... The look of the 8x8 posts is way better than 6x6 or 4x4, even though the smaller ones would have met code. Thanks for watching.

This inspired me to an idea. I think I'm going to screw a 2x4 into the side where I want to make the cut and use that as a guide so I know my tracking will remain true. I really think you have the right idea with the sawzall. I in no way own a forklift or cherry picker and using a circular saw or chainsaw while on a ladder isn't my cup of tea. Thanks for the ideas!

Yea... I'm not a fan of any saws on a ladder.... it seems like it would turn into a good video when you chop your fingers off and fall off the ladder! Good luck. Wayne

method 2 is what i do... but i am more deliberate to space my circ saw cuts no more than 1/4 inch apart! so you're removing almost 1/3 of the wood with a ton of circ saw cuts
