Fun Fact: The woman behind the desk at the law office is Jodi Benson, who did the speaking and singing voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid. The guy who plays Nathaniel plays Peter Pettigrew/Wormtail in the Harry Potter series. The actor who plays Giselle's love interest is Patrick Dempsy from the TV series Grey's Anatomy. One of the elderly men that was dancing with the flowers was a chimney sweep dancer in the step-in time number in Mary Poppins. The woman who plays the evil queen is Susan Sarandon, who plays Jane Spofford in The Witches of Eastwick
After seeing this movie again through you guys, and realizing the Mom didn't die, just left. Made me literally search if Moms pay child support if the Dad has primary custody. Turns out... yeah. Yeah, they still do have to pay child support. You learn something new everyday. Wonder if there's a movie with that circumstance.
I never minded Nancy running away with Edward, since it seemed throughout the whole movie that she wanted that fairytale romance. She was overjoyed when she got flowers from Robert, and was wowed (and imo slightly jealous) when Edward introduced Giselle. I think she wanted that spontaneous and fairytale ending, which I think is cute.
Well said. This is exactly why I found her departure with him and their quick-feeling marriage totally believable and still wholesome. It didn't feel forced in a "we need to pair off the leftovers" way, just more like an acknowledgement of people all having different ways of wanting to love and be loved.
I like her other clothes too, but the change in Giselle's style is thematic. She starts off in the insanely poufy princess dress, then makes the green dress which is still pretty fantastical, then makes the short pink sundress she wears on the date with Edward, and finally shows up at the ball in an entirely modern, very sleek dress. It's also in a darker color than anything she's worn so far (except for Robert's pjs), which further signifies that she's becoming more modern and down to earth rather than the bubbly pastel princess. By the end, she's in a soft yellow, almost casual looking piece (despite her business designing the gorgeous princess-y gowns for kids), showing she's found a balance between the worlds.
Also she is the only one with a "real" look in the ball where all are dressed as in a fairy tale, which says a lot about the evolution of her character. And also, Robert wears the exact same clothes that she put on the manekin prince at the beggining, meaning that it was him all the time.
that purple dress just looks plain ugly to me. The blue and white dress and the pink one is 10000x better. Since it's a ball, the blue and white one suits it more I think
Amy Adams is so brilliant in this movie, you notice that little by little she loses her “princess hands” and walk so that at the ball, when everyone is dressed like in a fairy tale, she’s using a formal normal dress signifying that she belongs to our world now.
You guys talked about both being "cynical assholes", but honestly your commentary is so open and empathetic that if you ARE allegedly that cynical then you do a great job of not sacrificing your compassion despite that. Loved this commentary, guys!
I think they're right about being cynical -- it's just that they direct it in a positive way, by being cynical of established unwholesome unempathetic social paradigms! 😆
Regarding Nancy marrying the prince really fast: the whole movie they show and point out how she really wishes for romance, romantic gestures, and fantasy-like stuff. She's super excited about the doves, the ball, how the shoe fits her... Nancy wanted to live a fairytale all along but Robert was always so serious that she had to kind of give up on that (why she stayed with him for five years when they were clearly not a good fit is still beyond my understanding). She wanted to live an adventure, fairy-tale life and she got to live it. Also note that when she first meets the prince and he talks about Giselle being his true heart desire etc, the first thing Nancy says is how romantic and unironic that was. Edward is literally the man who does the kind of stuff she's always wanted, and Edward is kinda just going along the story so it makes sense that they would choose to marry quickly. In the end they all kind of fell in love after only a few days.
Actually there's a deleted scene with Nancy in which she explains the kind of romantic adventure she feels she needs, and, for me, instead of contradicting the main message, it adds to it like "whatever works for you". But I can't wait the sequel about to premiere, "Disenchanted", 'cause I hope it dwells on what happens after that "happy ending" they all got
11:15 Actually, I appreciate that Giselle falling here is NOT a graceful landing in the arms of a prince - she falls head over ass and knocks him over. Another realistic move, in line with her character traits happening outside fairyland ahaha
The best part of the fish tank water drinking scene is that the secretary is played by Jodi Benson, the voice of Ariel….making her horror at Giselle spitting out the fish more hilarious.
The fact that this movie has sooo many *THE* Disney princesses: Julie Andrews (you say she's not a real-life Disney princess/queen, we are fighting.), Idina Menzel (Fun fact: her character's name Nancy Tremaine is a nod to the stepmother from Cinderella), Paige O'Hara (voice of Belle), and Jodi Benson (who has been the voice of so many iconic characters; most people are going to mention her being Ariel, but to me it's just as important that she was also Thumbelina^.^)~~~
You forgot Lea Salonga!!! She was the mum with all the kids in the apartment building. Edit: I was mistaken. The woman with the kiddos is Judy Kuhn, singing voice of Pocahontas.
I wouldn't say she behaves like a child. She's just very very naive. Plus from a different world. I think Robert likes her for her positivity. She bought a different perspective to his other wise straightforward life. Basically summing up every romance movie of the 2000s. Looking at today's movies that focus so much more on feelings and bonding and then watching movies from the 90s or the 2000s, its an experience.
Personally, I never saw her behaviour as overly childlike, maybe naive. I can see how it comes across that way but I like to think she's just from her own reality. She may not be used to the world of grey of when she grew up in black and white, good and evil. Sure she can seem childlike but she felt like an adult from a different reality to me. I totally get why other people would perceive it differently, that's just my take on it.
I agree, I think she’s more naive than childlike but the one part that creeps me out a bit is the fact that Robert probably has to teach Giselle about sex. She literally has the same grasp on the subject as 6 year old Morgan. It’s just odd.
@@frederique1019 I guess that, since she is interested in the "real world", she might take up reading, making new friends, watching TV, etc. And she might find out about sex that way. I think that Robert probably won't talk to her about it until she is interested in talking about it with him
The too-childlike nature of Gisele with a grown man did squick me out the older I got. Haven’t watched this movie in a while so I don’t remember all the details but I’ve always really enjoyed it as a whole. I love that Nancy isn’t a villain and is more than just the woman who “gets in the way” and gets her own HEA as well. As always, really enjoyed you guys’ commentary!
@@crazygamer_1082 Right, I agree her naivety definitely makes sense for her, but imo the extent of it veers into the "born sexy yesterday" trope mentioned above, a trope that's hardly seen with the genders reversed. At first she doesn't even know what it is to be angry when even kids know that. I mainly just rolled with it though, considering it's a whimsical and fantastical Disney film. I'm sure someone else can explain it better.
@@lurateghBlast from the Past actually did this trope really well with Brendan Fraser as the innocent, naive guy and Alicia Silverstone as the experienced, cynical girl. It was really good
This movie has a couple of fun little cameos in it. Both the actress that voiced Ariel and the actress that voiced Belle make appearances in this. And as another comment mentions it also has some of the chimney sweeps from Mary Poppins.
45:18 the reason why they gave her that dress is because of her character development. Robert was wearing, like you mentioned, the same outfit of her "true love" at the beginning of the movie, indicating that Robert was beginning to "believe" in happily ever afters, that fantasies and fairytales might be, in a way, real. She wore that dress, a modern and toned down dress, indicating that she was starting to "understand" reality, she was getting this world's views.
Honestly, I'd be fine with her wearing a modern dress if it just wasn't one that was ugly (imo). It also didn't feel that formal to me personally, it came off a little more beach-ware than you'd want for a formal event
@@summernovah well it will be outdated and kinda ugly for us since it fits the 2000’s aesthetics and trends, but I agree with the fact that it seems a bit informal too
13:37 Also appreciate that he gets his daughter to stay in his room with him, while compromising on letting the WEIRD STRANGER stay in his home overnight. It’s something 😂
Tbf my parents were the type to have basically strangers stay at our house over night or for a few days even when I was fairly young, it's a good compromise if you ask me
I'll never get over this amazing performance by Amy Adams, she did not only convince us that she was a Disney princess, she made it so genuine, 0 mimics, the scene where she experiences anger from the first time it's just brilliant, completely raw and you can totally see what's going on inside her even though she doesn't even know, and it's so complex and GOSH SHE SELLS IT SO WELL. And I'll never get over "So close" MY GOD I think the only Disney romantic moment that comes close is "I see the light". Yes, a "Whole New World" is beautiful, we all love "Beauty and the Beast" , "Bella Notte" is really cute and "Can you feel the love tonight" is so iconic. But this song has a rare beauty to it. It has such a sad, sweet, defieted, deep voice that just... Gets you, and it takes you somewhere else. One of my favourites of all time.
I don't think her behavior was necessarily childlike. It was more like being introduced to a completely different era/culture, mixed with undying optimism that the real world crushes when you're still young. I'm from Ohio and we get an influx of Amish people on Rumspringa getting to know our technology, culture and forbidden things they weren't allowed to do and their naivete can be similar but they aren't infantilized for it.
I have a lot of trivia for you guys. I don’t think there is a Disney film with more easter eggs than this one. Some facts have already been mentioned in the comments but will be included again below. 1. The narrator is Mary Poppins herself, Julie Andrews. 2. The troll has dresses belonging to the other Disney princesses attached to his waist. 3. Nancy Tremaine (Idina) has the same last name as Cinderella’s stepmother. 4. Robert’s law firm Churchill, Harline, & Smith is named after the composers & lyricist for Snow White & the Seven Dwarves. 5. Jodi Benson, the voice of Ariel, plays Robert’s secretary and Part of Your World can be heard playing in the background. 6. The old men who hand ladies flowers & dance in the number That’s How You Know are the chimney sweeps from Mary Poppins. 7. When Edward is watching a soap opera in his motel room, the woman in it is Paige O’Hara the voice of Belle, Jerry Orbach (Lumiere) & David Ogden Stiers (Cogsworth) are both referenced and the song Beauty and the Beast is playing over the soap opera scene. 8. When Edward is going door to door in Robert’s apartment building a woman with children answers at one of the apartments Edward knocks on. That woman is Judy Kuhn, the singing voice of Pocahontas. 9. James Marsden was really run over by all those cyclists in order for it to look real.
Here's a big one: *deep breath* The female soap star “Angela” (so named for Angela Lansbury, who voiced Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast) is played by Paige O’Hara, the voice of Belle. “Angela” is arguing with a man named “Jerry” (Jerry Orbach voiced Lumiere) because she’s having an affair with a man named “Ogden” (David Ogden Stiers voiced Cogsworth). This soap opera scene is scored with music from Beauty and the Beast.
As much as I would've enjoyed Jerry Orbach playing a role in this movie he actually passed away in '04 & Enchanted came out in '07. The actor who played Jerry was Danny Mastrogiorgio and maybe the name Jerry was a nod to Jerry Orbach. 😄
@@naiaddore1797 If I'm understanding both comments correctly, you just reinforced exactly what OP said. :P They said the naming was a nod, not that Jerry appeared in this.
I don't think the central message is how quickly people fall in love - I think it's more about falling into relationships because that's what is "expected" of you (and trying to have it for the sake of the relationship vs the person you are actually in it with). So the prince/princess bit of not knowing one another, but being fated to be together anyway, falls into that. But so does the real life couple who are clearly looking for two different things from the relationship, but have settled into it and are compromising what they want to make it work. Love this!
One of my favorite parts is Edward being happy for Giselle at the end and wanting her to be well and happy instead of getting mad, I appreciate that that's the route they decided to go with
Gisele's innocence matches a TV trope called "born sexy yesterday", woman characters who are clueless and don't know how the world works out so the male character has ho take care of her and teach her how things are. Think of Leelo from Fifth Element. Clueless and, of course, objectively beautiful.
My partner and I love this movie, and I'm firmly convinced that Giselle does have "Disney powers" when she arrives in "our world". The scene in Central Park is 100% her enchanting all of those people will her song, and like you said, Robert is immune (not fully, he does start to smile and bob along a bit) because he's so cynical. You guys are one of the ONLY people to watch this and comment on her "powers" and I'm so glad because I love that aspect of the story. This is a great reaction, thanks guys!
I looooove this movie. Amy Adams is just such a delight here. Back then it was VERY new that the princess got to save the guy and I remember back when this came out, I appreciated it a lot.
Nancy’s last name is Tremaine, a reference to the wicked stepmother in Cinderella. And ironically, she recently DID play the stepmother in Camilles Cinderella!
i don't know if you guys noticed it, but in the beginning of the movie, when she's singing the musical at the park, robert says that he "doesn't dance neither sings" and the lyrics repeatedly say that "he'll find a way to show his love in the little things he'll do" and at the ball, he actually does. he sings to her while dancing. it's subtle but very heartwarming when you think about it. 🥺💟
Such an excellent movie, I'm excited for the upcoming sequel! I love how the longer Giselle stays in reality, the less elaborate, frilly and more subdued her outfits become. She also speaks in a more mannered way, and less high pitched and excitable.
And the way she changes it's why I don't mind how she acts in the first half of the movie. I understand how it can be weird the whole "born sexy yesterday" trope, but she naturally matures, which is great IMO :)
Loved this reaction and the commentary! I used to feel the same about Giselle’s dress at the ball and in terms of what I feels suits her character, I definitely love the ones she made herself. That said, I ended up really appreciating that dress for the ball, an event more suited for her actual style, but one she was also expecting to be her last moment in that world. So she chose a dress more in line with the “reality” she is in. And then you have Robert looking almost exactly like how Giselle made up her dream guy in her world. And he ends up singing! So it really is a nice visual fashion wise to show both characters meeting in the middle and finally realizing what they want and need I think.
I don't think she acts like a child, only in that she's really hopeful and idealistic. The point is that it takes someone that extremely optimistic to balance out someone so cynical and closed off.
OK some facts for you the receptionist and fish drinking was because the actress is arials voice actor. The lady with all the kids was pocahontas and the actress in the soap opera was belle. One old man who danced in how dose she know were original dancing chimney sweepers in Mary Poppins, and two were jets in the movie West Side story. The law firm where Robert Philip (Philip like the prince) works is Churchill, Harline, and Smith, the surnames of the songwriters from Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs. Many last names of characters are names of characters from other Disney movies. Originally the movie was darker and not kid friendly and 1st script was said to be more an r rating due to her bumping in to a stripper on a hen doo, not a lawyer.
I think the point of the Giselle's ball dress is, that for the first time in the movie she does not have fairy tale clothes on her. That she is accommodating to the real world. but yeah… it was disappointment… xP
Something I love about this movie is that in the song “how does she know” David says that he both doesn’t sing or dance, and then during the ball he both dances with Giselle and sings to her, it’s a small detail but I love it so much
I think the thing with stepparents is that the child being resistant to it is a self fulfilling prophecy in a way. For decades, they have been conditioned by media to expect to feel negatively towards the idea of their parents finding someone new and, in the case of many kid's movies, the concerns are validated by the fact that the stepparent turns out to be awful. I think kids also just don't like a change to the status quo of their lives and, until a certain age, many don't really see their parents as people with separate wants and lives. Couple that with complicated feelings around the reasons why their parent was until that point single.
13:36 Really glad you thought about the book thing because I almost commented about that convo earlier - I also love books and loved getting them as gifts when I was a kid, so definitely never related to the ‘ew books’ trope. But in this instance, I do understand it is an example of not understanding his daughter, combined with poorly buffering through a big announcement for her.
Ok so I love how you notice her dress doesn’t match the theme. The reason why she chooses a modern dress is that she’s finally assimilating herself into reality. I hated how her dress looked but Giselle slowly changes her dresses into more laid back styles compared to her princess bridal gown
This movie was something I would watch repeatedly for hours, I loved it a lot! It's so interesting how the change in perspectives make sense as you get older, too. When I was little, I would see the movie from the point of view of someone like Morgan and Giselle, but now as a young adult it gives me a lot of long-lost hope to see Giselle make so many people's lives so much brighter in the situations she finds herself in. Also yes, the actions of the characters are incredibly realistic, especially Robert having Morgan sleep in his room since Giselle is staying the night. I never got that as a kid, but I do now.
Bunch of Easter eggs for the That's how you know number: The calypso beat in “That’s How You Know” is intended as a nod to “Under the Sea” and “Kiss the Girl” in The Little Mermaid. One of the old men dancing in the bench shot was in Mary Poppins as a chimney sweep. The stage play featured in it was a production of Rapunzel, a nod to Tangled (which was in development when Enchanted premiered). And the last one: It actually made it to the real life news, mistaken for a flash mob!
I remember when this movie came out, my mom got me Giselle's wedding dress from the Disney store at the mall. I would would wear it all the time at home. The kids dresses nowadays hit different.
2 of the elderly men dancing in That’s How You Know were both in West Side Story as dancers in the Jets gang. One of the others was a chimney sweep in Mary Poppins. The women they danced with were their wives in real life ❤
Prior to this movie Disney hadn't been doing well with their films since Tarzan (1999)...then THIS came and it felt like Disney was returning with a better wave of good movies! Followed by The Princess and the Frog and Tangled. And they've been doing well since =) Enchanted definitely brought Disney back =)
One of the best movies ever. And I love the ending for Nancy. Its cool how her ex pointed out that she is serious, and smart, and all like women in the book... And the truth is that she actually wants her fairy tale) I think, that the main plot of this story is not about "you need time to know each other". Its about "If you are ment to be, than three days are enough... And if you are not, than five years would not help"
10:35 Exactly. Just because our dad died on us doesn't mean my mom deserves love less? I felt that way even as a kid. Sure her choices kinda sucked, but I wanted that for her pretty badly. It really does vary though....she's single now, I encourage her to get out there, my sister thinks it's weird for her to. Everybody's thoughts on this depend. And another thing lol @ 32:17 I think the problem is we focus too much on self-love and not self-respect, funnily enough what the soap opera woman mentions. It's an absolute must, but self-love is I feel....kind of unattainable for a significant portion of the population, and acting like it's a character flaw if you can't get there is actually pretty disgusting if you ask me.
I was in love with this movie growing up, it only aired a couple years later on the Disney channel in my country and I randomly came across it and absolutely loved it! It's so comforting and fun, also made me love Amy Adams ☺️
Robert’s last name is Philip, a reference to Prince Phillip in Sleeping Beauty, whose trusty steed also happens to be named Samson. He's also wearing the same costume as the mannequin in the beginning at the ball.
I love that they made a movie where the “step-mom” figure is actually a kind person that the kid likes. I know it didn’t work in the end, but she was never portrayed as unkind. Love it!
james marsden does have a great voice, he's one of my favorite things about Hairspray i LOVE him as corny collins you guys should watch it if ypu havent already, great movie great musical
There's a version of Snow White with Julia Roberts where the Evil Queen does try to marry the prince herself and it was funny. Not the entire film, as I recall, but the Queen was.
honestly i don’t think giselle was childlike it’s just what we perceive as a society of what childlike is, she’s seen childlike because she doesn’t understand our world and believes in fairytales and is surprised and shocked by all the new things. honestly i find nothing wrong with her and robert because his elle is just a bit naive but does adapt very quickly to the real world whereas a child would take a lot longer. it’s shown that giselle lives in a tree which means she probably is subject to danger quite a lot especially in a universe where actual villains and trolls and stuff exist she’s just highly idealistic because she actually knows she’s getting happily ever after at some point. also the thing with her relationship with robert is that she understands how things like sex works but the kiss is the epitome of love and that’s what could ruins relationships and obviously because people marry like a day after meeting sex isn’t a massive widespread things people do with just whoever
In case you're wondering about Nancy's arc and her somewhat sudden happy ending with Edward (which didn't show us how their relationship worked out in the fairytale world, maybe they'll show it in the sequel), there's actually a deleted scene that confirms that she is indeed a hopeless romantic in need of a fairytale-like romance. 🙂 Why did they deleted that scene? Don't know lol 😅
It's such a minor detail but I always LOVED how the poison apples went between 2D and 3D, at first the queen holds them in 2D, then they pop up in 3D BUT THEN she grabs one and pulls it back into 2D and the whole sequence is so damn smooth is has continously blown my mind since 2007 when I first saw it in theatres
The final, lightning-struck battle is a homage to the battles in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast.
The troll in the opening sequence is sporting a trendy loincloth consisting of remnants of Cinderella’s maid get-up, Aurora’s Briar Rose dress, Belle’s village dress, and Snow White’s rags. His earrings are also made of Ariel’s shell top.
Her naivete ended when she experienced anger. As soon as her innocence was lost, she noticed Robert's shirt collar was open, exposing his chest/chest hair. It's a very subtle shift, but she stopped looking at his face/eyes and was only looking at his chest...and her eyes ween't bright and open, but confused & curious.
your movie commentaries are already top tier but i swear it gets better every video, the comedic timing is just on point 🏆 this channel deserves more recognition
This was hands down the BEST movie commentary I’ve watched. Y’all were freakin GREAT! All the funnies, all the legit LIFE ADVICE, ugh, I couldn’t put my phone down! Pls do commentary for the sequel, too! 💜 Thx guys!
50:30 the explanation I found was that it didn't make sense for her to have a song, because none of the other New York based characters had their own song either. But fear not, she WILL have one in Disenchanted!
Hey guys their were cameo of voice actress of Disney princess. Jodi Benson voice Ariel, Paige O’Hara voice of Belle, Judy Kuhn voice of Pocahontas. Last of course Julie Andrews for Mary Poppins.
Since you guys are on the Princess train, I’d love to see you guys do a commentary/reaction to Mirror Mirror, the 2012 remake of Snow White. It has Lily Collins, Julia Roberts and-unfortunately Armie Hammer, but it’s still a lovely film nonetheless and I really like the way the story is portrayed.
One of my favorite moments in this movie is when Robert and Giselle are dancing and he is softly singing along with the song. It's a full-circle moment for his character that I just find so romantic and charming: he CAN sing and dance, he just needed to tap into some feelings. 💖
Twist…. She is the fourth Sanderson sister (hocus pocus , they all have the power to control people with their music) and the three baddies erased her memory and banished her to andelasia.
The Prince actually got hit by the bikes, he wanted it to be genuine. And the old men with yellow flowers were chimney sweeps from Mary Poppins. The references in this movie are endless ❤️
Love how you guys were like yes there are people who fall in love from the first sight and stay together forever but we're not talking about those weirdos right now lmao
I have seen this movie SO MANY times and literally just this last time I watched it I realized that at the ball, he dances AND SINGS to her after earlier in the movie he said he didn't dance or sing. So cheesy but it still got to me.
my favorite fact about this movie is that the old men with the yellow flowers during "how does she know?" are the stepping time chimney sweeps from mary poppins! so seeing them dance again, even just a little, is pretty special🥰
When Enchanted 2 or "Disenchanted" comes out, I hope you guys watch it. I believe it's coming on Thanksgiving (November 24th), I seriously can't wait! Consider the fact that it's been like 15 years lol. ❤🤣🤣
I love all the cameos and Easter eggs in this movie, but my favorite behind-the-scenes fact is about the music. At the 2008 Oscars, almost all the original songs in this movie were nominated for Best Song. This was unprecedented and a huge boon for legendary composer Alan Menken-the Disney music legend of the Disney Renaissance-but the kicker was Enchanted did not win Best Song. Despite the loss, though, there was some anger at the fact that so many songs were nominated from the same movie, so the Academy made a new rule that still stands: Best Song category nominations are limited to one song per film, and during the preliminary nominations the limit is two songs per film, with the favorite of the two getting the official Oscar nomination and being eligible for the category award. I’ve noticed you mainly do contemporary-esque movies, so I’m wondering if you’d do a commentary for a period film? There’s a great Disney movie called Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken that tells the true story of Sonora Webster, a 1920/30s horse diving girl. It’s right in line with your women empowerment vibe and it’s a wonderful drama with a fantastic message.
Whoa! Ages ago I torrented a file of every Disney film, or at least that's what it was supposed to contain, but either I didn't notice this one or it's missing, because I'm sure I've never heard of it. What an interesting premise. And "horse diving" isn't even a phrase I've ever heard before either. Definitely have to look into this lol, sounds like the kind of story that will most likely make me cry my eyes out but probably be worth it 😂
@@ItsAsparageese Back in American history of performance acts, horse diving was incredibly popular. A pretty woman in a swimsuit climbed up to a very high platform, her horse was released to run up the platform ramp, and she’d jump on its back as it dove off the platform into the waiting tank of water below. It was a great spectacle and for the most part the horses were treated very well. Especially the Carver horses, which is who Sonora worked for. Sadly, accidents did happen. To both horse and rider. I highly recommend the movie. And even some research into Sonora Webster Carver herself. She married into the Carver family. Amazing woman.
@@kailyns8159 I ... I honestly half-expected "horse diving" to have been a typo, but was rolling with the subject in good faith on the assumption that I just haven't heard of everything ever lol. I'm so glad I replied and grateful that you elaborated, because I don't think I'd have remembered to look up anything about it, and I'm absolutely blown away by this extremely weird-sounding sport 😂 I don't think I've ever heard of anything in my life that so boldly had "THINGS ONLY WEALTHY USIANS WOULD COME UP WITH" written all over it 🤣
46:35 my favorite bit there. He made a big deal out of not singing, he doesn't sing, and then the way they show he fell for her is he'll sing to her (and likely knows it's the last chance he is ever going to have to do it)
"Romantically falling in love with someone who acts like a child is weird." YES! And this is such a trope in fantasy/sci-fi. Media in general likes to portray the naivety and infantilization of women as desirable, even sexy. The natural extreme of this phenomenon is movies and tv where men fall in love with extremely naive, sometimes child-like women. Pop Culture Detective (on TH-cam) even did a video about it titled "Born Sexy Yesterday." I do think Enchanted somewhat overcomes the weirdness of their relationship, because by the end there isn't such a power imbalance, and she learns a lot and becomes less child-like.
I messed up the audio a little for this one so if you''re noticing some distortion from clipping, sorry bout that - Sam

Apparently, Idina Menzel was pleased to be hired for her acting abilities, and not just for her singing, although Nancy does sing in a deleted scene.
She's a decent actor I enjoyed her in this
Funnily enough i kinda felt it in her acting : she looks like someone who's really happy having the opportunity to be a part of this
Yea it was refreshing. I wanna see her act more too
But it's insane to have Idina Menzel in a musical and not have her sing.
I had no idea she could sing when this movie came out, I liked her and wonder why I never saw her again until Glee 😅

I think she wanted that spontaneous and fairytale ending, which I think is cute.
Yeah, and some people do click like that and just want a romance/advanture out of life. They both match
Well said. This is exactly why I found her departure with him and their quick-feeling marriage totally believable and still wholesome. It didn't feel forced in a "we need to pair off the leftovers" way, just more like an acknowledgement of people all having different ways of wanting to love and be loved.
Yesss. This ^^
I like enchanted
I like enchanted
The moment when she became "angry" at Robert was when she started to become more human.
that purple dress just looks plain ugly to me. The blue and white dress and the pink one is 10000x better. Since it's a ball, the blue and white one suits it more I think
i just wish the purple dress wasn’t so,, ugly😭 she could’ve had something that suited her more in color or cut, while still fitting thematically
Amy Adams is so brilliant in this movie, you notice that little by little she loses her “princess hands” and walk so that at the ball, when everyone is dressed like in a fairy tale, she’s using a formal normal dress signifying that she belongs to our world now.
In my honest opinion it's her best film.
The blue and white dress and the pink dress looks normal to me
You guys talked about both being "cynical assholes", but honestly your commentary is so open and empathetic that if you ARE allegedly that cynical then you do a great job of not sacrificing your compassion despite that. Loved this commentary, guys!
I think they're right about being cynical -- it's just that they direct it in a positive way, by being cynical of established unwholesome unempathetic social paradigms! 😆
@@ItsAsparageese Great way to put it!
Decent guys trying to come off as not decent 😏 I love how much fun they had w this movie 😊
@@ReiroLufkin Oh my goodness, is there a sequel coming?! That's so exciting 🏰
You can also hear a Little Mermaid medley in the background
@@Orion_TheyThem not thumbelina omgggggg thats so important
@@Orion_TheyThem that wasnt lea??
@@Orion_TheyThem that wasn't Lea-
@@jenthejen I said nothing about thumbelina??? 🙃
I think that Robert probably won't talk to her about it until she is interested in talking about it with him
I agree on calling her naive to our world. But our world isn’t grey either
@@frederique1019 Oh yeah that is creepy. i agree.
@@sharpaycutie2 Our world isn't black and white. There is nuance and so many grey areas. There are areas that are but it is grey.
It kinda does fall into the "Born sexy yesterday"from Pop culture detective
@@jimerodriguez8332 Oh definitely!
Really? I always saw it as naive princess not aware of the world. Which can be childlike but it makes sense in terms of her character.
Also Julie Andrews narrates. She was Mary Poppins.
I think their are two elderly ladies at the ball too who voiced older Disney princesses
The singing voice of Pocahontas, Judy Kuhn, was the women with a bunch of kids who answers the door.
Yeeeess the old men in "that's how you know" are chimney dancers from Mary Poppins ☺️
@@summernovah well it will be outdated and kinda ugly for us since it fits the 2000’s aesthetics and trends, but I agree with the fact that it seems a bit informal too
@@summernovah girl it was the early 2000’s when this was made
"That's How You Know" is THE song and this movie should have gotten an award for that song alone.
Love this movie. Can't wait for the sequel.
I think my fave James Marsden role is Corny Collins in Hairspray. Perfect casting in my opinion.
Yes!
wait there's gonna be a sequel?
@@balmainbarbie_8730 yeah it's called disenchanted and if i remember correctly the movie is coming out later this year
I’m so excited for the sequel. I saw pictures of Giselle, Robert, and daughter as a teenager and it made me so happy.
@@balmainbarbie_8730 It comes out in October I think. It will be out Disney Plus.
29:53 Fun fact: The bikers actually DID run him over, because James Marsden said he wanted it to look realistic!
An actual himbo in real life too. Love it.
9. James Marsden was really run over by all those cyclists in order for it to look real.
the new ladies name was also Mary Ilene Caseotti (Mary Costa voiced Aurora, Ilene Woods voiced Cinderella, and Adriana Caselotti voiced Snow White)
Here's a big one:
*deep breath*
The female soap star “Angela” (so named for Angela Lansbury, who voiced Mrs.
Wow, that's deep lore lol, what great writing and what a fun bit of detail to share! Thanks for commenting this!
Clueless and, of course, objectively beautiful.
you watch Pop Culture Detective too ?
@@alexis-marie_9920 hahaha exactly, yes. Was the first thing I could think about when they brought it up.
good point. I think it helps to have Edward be the lovely himbo he is to complement Giselle
Oh my,I just commented that! She does fall into in It
My partner and I love this movie, and I'm firmly convinced that Giselle does have "Disney powers" when she arrives in "our world".
Also her powers work on animals too.
29:52 actually, the actor wanted this scene to look as real as possible, so he did actually get run over by those bikes lmaoo
I looooove this movie. Amy Adams is just such a delight here. Back then it was VERY new that the princess got to save the guy and I remember back when this came out, I appreciated it a lot.
in the audition they didn't have James Marsden sing but he was like no let me sing, then him and Amy sang together and they were like yep this is it.
Nancy’s last name is Tremaine, a reference to the wicked stepmother in Cinderella.
And ironically, she recently DID play the stepmother in Camilles Cinderella!
The fact the queen’s henchman/simp is Wormtail from Harry Potter, AKA the same role for Voldemort… always messes with my head
Wait... Is Wormtail in love with Voldemort?
@@ashildrtheswift3028 might as well be. Either way the characters still suit the original "simpering" vibe that the word "simp" is derived from 🤷♂️
he plays essentially the same role in sweeney todd alongside alan rickman too! really interesting to see how he’s been typecasted
James Marsden was a great choice for a prince and this movie is so underrated
I fully believe that he and Amy Adams came straight from the animated fantasy world
i don't know if you guys noticed it, but in the beginning of the movie, when she's singing the musical at the park, robert says that he "doesn't dance neither sings" and the lyrics repeatedly say that "he'll find a way to show his love in the little things he'll do" and at the ball, he actually does.
he sings to her while dancing. it's subtle but very heartwarming when you think about it. 🥺💟
Meaning that the more he spent time with Giselle the more he was beginning to fall in love with her.
Such an excellent movie, I'm excited for the upcoming sequel! I love how the longer Giselle stays in reality, the less elaborate, frilly and more subdued her outfits become. She also speaks in a more mannered way, and less high pitched and excitable.
That thing a about her outfits makes me sad tho 😂
That's how I feel about the modern dress. If that was her last night in our world that would complete her transition into it.
I adore the themes and theory of the clothes, I just hate the execution of it XD
Her modern-style dress at the end is meant to show that she prefers the ‘real world’ to Andalasia now
I think the point of the Giselle's ball dress is, that for the first time in the movie she does not have fairy tale clothes on her. That she is accommodating to the real world.
but yeah… it was disappointment…
xP
Her purple dress was amazing! It's simple but so elegant and the fit was absolutely beautiful for her!!
Bunch of Easter eggs for the That's how you know number:
The calypso beat in “That’s How You Know” is intended as a nod to “Under the Sea” and “Kiss the Girl” in The Little Mermaid.
Love it!
I love the little detail of Robert singing as he dances with Giselle, but only loud enough for her to hear it
"If it's one thing America loves it's free labor," -Sam
How can you say something so controversial, yet so brave 😂
Poison apple: Snow White
Dropping one heel: Cinderella
One kiss saving sleeping beauty: Aurora
james marsden does have a great voice, he's one of my favorite things about Hairspray i LOVE him as corny collins you guys should watch it if ypu havent already, great movie great musical
The animation on the evil queen tells me that Lana Parilla really was meant to play the role of the evil queen
Why did they deleted that scene?

50:30 the explanation I found was that it didn't make sense for her to have a song, because none of the other New York based characters had their own song either.
But fear not, she WILL have one in Disenchanted!
The pink flower pattern on Giselle’s dress is really a bunch of hidden Mickeys.
Same goes for the bus drivers hair
Hey guys their were cameo of voice actress of Disney princess. Jodi Benson voice Ariel, Paige O’Hara voice of Belle, Judy Kuhn voice of Pocahontas. Last of course Julie Andrews for Mary Poppins.
"Marsden honestly has a really nice voice" ohhhh you guys should totally watch Hairspray

This movie was the birth of Frozen’s subversion of princess tropes and Disney realizing that making fun of themselves makes a lot of money lol
Giselle's outfit for the ball was the worst glowdown in movie history literally what were they thinking
The Prince actually got hit by the bikes, he wanted it to be genuine.

Robert’s secretary Sam is played by Jodi Benson, the voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid.
You can also hear "Part of Your World" in the background.
The entire "So Close" number is a reference to Beauty and the Beast, complete with a chandelier.
I have seen this movie SO MANY times and literally just this last time I watched it I realized that at the ball, he dances AND SINGS to her after earlier in the movie he said he didn't dance or sing. So cheesy but it still got to me.
Robert’s law firm is named after Snow White and the Seven Dwarf’s songwriters: Frank Churchill, Leigh Harline, and Paul J. Smith.
The fish out of water trope makes for some of my favorite comedies of all time
my favorite fact about this movie is that the old men with the yellow flowers during "how does she know?" are the stepping time chimney sweeps from mary poppins! so seeing them dance again, even just a little, is pretty special🥰
19:27 He did find the address, but he only had the building location. He didn't have the exact apartment (flat, I think y'all call it) Giselle was in.
I'd FREAK out watching them react to Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken. That movie was my shit as a kid!
Whoa! Ages ago I torrented a file of every Disney film, or at least that's what it was supposed to contain, but either I didn't notice this one or it's missing, because I'm sure I've never heard of it. What an interesting premise. And "horse diving" isn't even a phrase I've ever heard before either. Definitely have to look into this lol, sounds like the kind of story that will most likely make me cry my eyes out but probably be worth it 😂
@@veronicab9253 Let’s hope they see my post and respond then. And yes, the movie is fantastic.
I'm so glad I replied and grateful that you elaborated, because I don't think I'd have remembered to look up anything about it, and I'm absolutely blown away by this extremely weird-sounding sport 😂 I don't think I've ever heard of anything in my life that so boldly had "THINGS ONLY WEALTHY USIANS WOULD COME UP WITH" written all over it 🤣
The Italian restaurant is named Bella Notte, referencing the song in Lady and the Tramp.
The song 'so close' is one of my favorite songs it's so beautiful
46:35 my favorite bit there. He made a big deal out of not singing, he doesn't sing, and then the way they show he fell for her is he'll sing to her (and likely knows it's the last chance he is ever going to have to do it)
"Romantically falling in love with someone who acts like a child is weird."
YES!
This is the first time Disney did a parody of their own movies.
The little “gasp, it’s a pop up” 😂 that was adorable and immediately made my day hahaha
I completely agree that happily ever after takes work to achieve.

David Bowie from Labyrinth is that you?!
