I am 46. I have been a fan of Dean Martin and Frank since I was 12 or 13. Nothing better. What other fifteen year old asked for an Ink Spots record for Christmas? Me. That's who.
Loved watching his variety show back in the late 60's, especially when he had "The Golddiggers" dancers on. I may have been young, but they were fun to look at. 😁 I say that partly in jest, because they were all talented ladies, but they were also VERY beautiful ladies too.
If he is faking being drunk, it is the best act next to Foster Brooks! He is very coherent and witty. He didn't need to put on the act. We all would have loved him anyway.
Dean perfected the drunk cool guy. It was the persona he went to after the break-up with Lewis and perfected with the Rat Pack. In fact, Dean was up every morning at 6am to play golf. Had dinner most every night with his family. Drank apple juice on stage, not Scotch. And had no problems leaving Sinatra and Co-who would drink into the wee hours-to go to bed.
Not drunk. Moves around in the chair due to a bad painful back and on meds. That can make you loopy. Dean performed in London in 1983 and was a pro as usual.@@barbaraferron7994

He was not a drunk; it was an act. That and the corny jokes. Numerous people have testified to the fact (including his daughter), that he always had apple juice in the glass, and he did not like parties. Never went along with Frank's parties. He could never have been a top level golfer, golfing every day first thing in the morning, raised and trained Andalusian horses, had a successful TV show for 10 years, carried on with a successful roast show for years, spent 10 years suffering with Jerry Lewis and making $$ hand over fist -- if he had been a drunk. Besides the fact that he never looked like a drunk, he had a great complexion, a superb physique, and he was drop-dead gorgeous-attractive to women, and men.
I wondered when he started his on stage gimmick as a drunk because I don't recall ever seeing this in his earlier work. And he carried this wherever he went. If it were me I would have kept this to onstage as people may talk and start showing me in a negative light.
In several interviews the family always mentioned that he would only have a glass of wine or two only with dinner cuz he would have to wake up early in the morning to go play golf. His prop people on stage would always mention that he would ask for Martinelli's Apple juice by name.
@@franciscrocombe It all started when he and Jerry Lewis broke off the partnership. It works so well for him, did it keep using it over and over until it kind of got a little old; but people expected that of him which is why he continue to put on the ACT. A lot of people ask the same question. When he broke off the partnership with Jerry Lewis he needed a reinvent himself. Before he became famous he used to open up for The Mills Brothers in the 40s and was kind of stiff and nervous up on stage. So Harry Mills suggested that he would light up a cigarette, and have a drink or two to come down your nerves before you go up on stage. So he kind of did that and it worked for him. And he was a type of person that if something worked, don't change it. And he said in interviews, I can't change it even if I wanted to because people expect that from me cuz now it's part of my image. In other words he was like another Foster Brooks. But the slowness of speech was getting to be a very regular thing, including during serious interviews. Percodan? Perhaps. Or primary progressive aphasia, or something of the sort.
Hi, Dean did drink, he admitted that many times. But he didn’t drink when working. This was his schtick. Every entertainer back then had a gimmick, Lucille Ball was the bumbler, Jack Benny was the tight wad, Sinatra was the swinger, Jerry Lewis was the idiot etc. Dean developed this character after he & Lewis split & a comedian named Joe E. Lewis, who did the same sort of drunk act retired. Dean did start drinking more heavily after his son was killed in 1987. If you pay attention to his quick wit during this clip you’ll know someone who’s drunk couldn’t do that. He always had a relaxed even lackadaisical way of speaking & that helped his drunk act a lot. Also, that’s his real hair. His dad also had thick hair.
