Agreed. Dean didn’t fake his way to the top. He had talent and a voice unique and easy to hear. He was a star in every sense of the word, and a pretty nice guy. He loved his kids and he avoided the Mafia guys, unlike Sinatra. He loved comic books and westerns. The loss of a child, no matter one’s age, is the worst loss a human can suffer. That wound to the heart never heals. The only thing he faked was being drunk. He was killed by the same addiction that has killed most of his generation: smoking. He was a nonstop chain smoker and he went the way they all did, including John Wayne, Sammy Davis Jr., and Yul Brenner: cancer. Smoking causes cancer, they knew it back in the sixties, but the addiction was too hard to break for most. Lung cancer may have killed him, but I think the broken heart over his son’s death made him ready to go, to accept his fate. Hopefully he’s with his son now. But Dean left us a wonderful legacy of entertainment, songs and laughs. And that’s we we still love the guy years after his passing. He was one of a kind. Pretty good legacy for 78 years.

Not just the surgery they would likely want him to quit smoking too he would rather die. My grandfather drank and smoked heavily and lived to be about 83 died without any cancer in his sleep so only five years difference.

I had the honor of meeting him in person at RJ’s the rib joint back in 1980. Or 81. He was wonderful. I fawned all over him worse than Lucy meets a star on her shows. He was kind sweet and so nice to me. He’s been my idol since the early 70’s. When he jumped on that piano and was goofy and then went to the couch and sang beautifully in that tux who didn’t wish they were him. A true man’s man. I wish he hadn’t smoked. His looks and voice would have lasted much longer. When I’m depressed I put an album of his on and I sing along and feel good again. I miss him. God rest his soul.

I'm over 80 and love him and his music.
I always admired Dean as an entertainer. His effortless talent and ability to relax in front of a camera or audience inspired me to practice that in my own life. As for his refusing surgery to prolong his life, I admire that too. Where is it written that we must, at all costs and by any means, go on and on as long as we can possibly go on? Rest in peace Dean.
An aunt refused cancer surgery, further, at 91. One has to look at quality and not just quantity.
That he msde it to 78 years is a miracle in itself. He won the race.
Dean Martin had an incredible array of talent, one unlikely to be matched. To top it all off, he was the King of Cool. Some events in his life were quite tragic, yes, but I wouldn't say his end was. He lived well into his 70s. Considering how he lived, that's quite astonishingly as well.

Dean Martin was without question one of the most complete entertainment packages of his era and could have probably carried that title in any other era as well. Those stars he surrounded himself with were also very much on the same level which made him all the more special.
A true legend, Dean Martin. He could entertain and inspire better than the rest.

I loved him . My father passed away after undergrad school but was as handsome as Dean and the ladies and gentlemen often commented on how much they looked like each other.

Dean Martin was in a class of his own. He was a giant among giants and a 1st class entertainer that could do it all. We miss you.
If you have not heard the "essential Dean Martin" album give it a try. There's part of a live show at Lake Tahoe and Dean is cracking jokes and doing bits with the band. The joke about him having seven kids is a classic.

Thursday night 9pm in New York. Our bowling league was Thursday night and we’d race home to see the show at 9pm. I wish we still had TV shows like that now. We’ve forgotten how to laugh, poke fun at each other.

Growing up in the 60's my family would regularly watch the Dean Martin show. He was great entertainment, along with many of the celebrities of that era. An era of which I sorely miss. This was an excellent biography, thank you.
As a kid, the only night that I was allowed to stay up after 10pm, was the night that the Dean Martin Show was on. We watched him every week.
Dean Martin lived his life fully and well. A brave, tough man with realized talent and great heart.

Perfectly understandable that he refused heroic treatment. He would have entered a whirl of medical intervention. There comes a time where we accept death.
78 is a long life for a life long smoker. Most are lucky to make it to 60.
His son had died tragically, and I always thought that men like that want to follow their child. Pierre Trudeau was the same - when his son Michel was lost in an avalanche, a catastrophic accident like Dino's, it broke his heart, and he refused treatment for his cancer. Same with Dean - and both Dean and Pierre were devoted Catholics.
That is why there are choices in life . Love Dino❤
He lived a long and successful life with many laughs and who can say that. Only after you loose a loved one like he did how can you get over it. It was no longer the happy go lucky Dean but like when Gable lost Lombard in a plane crash he lost his kick as well. I admire the success that they both had but I could only imagine the horror they had to go through. It’s beyond words so I’ll just say good bless you Dean for all the joy that you brought so many.

Dean was one of the greatest singers of his time and an accomplished dramatic and comedic actor. And he was the only person, imo, who could make Jerry Lewis seem like a great comedian. He was one of the greatest straight men of all time.

My mother-in-law was a bartender in San Francisco in 1980 and one of her regular customers was Betty. She said it was sad listening to her talk about her life with Dean Martin.
I always wondered about Betty. She was devastated when she was left behind.

Dean was born the same year as my mother; and I remember him often on television in my youth. Funny, wicked sense of humor, and a great voice - he brought joy and laughter to many.
Dean Martin was something else. When "Everybody Loves Somebody" moved The Beatles out of the number one spot Dean contacted Elvis . It was an amusing exchange. I remember when Dean died. It was Christmas Day and my family was still together. I remember my Mother was very sad as was I. Thank you for this program. I hope you do the other King of Cool, Bobby Darin. He was too cool.

Not only does the man make the song his own, but Bobby manages to pay homage to The Genius by recording what was actually the live version Mr. Charles would perform on tour. Not the quick, 2 &1/2 minute single version.

My first 8 track cassette I ever bought was dean because my mom loved him and the first song that played was ‘Lay some happiness on me’ . I think it was sometime in 1965 but not sure. It’s still my favorite song to this day and I probably have sung or hummed it at least on earth day ever since. I still maintain he had the greatest voice of all

He sings with feeling and emotion in his songs that you can hear and feel within you, so I prefer Dean's singing, to Frank Sinatra's singing.
Definitely, the best voice, great personality, very kind. He & Bob Newhart were great together. Funniest skit ever was when they were reporters & went to nudist camp with only a camera between!! them!!!
Dean is an absolute icon. His music (along with Sinatra) transcends generations. I keep their playlist on heavy rotation and EVERYBODY that hears it knows who it is. The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts were absolutely incredibly. RIP Dino.
My Grandfathers dog would start howling only when Dean Martin would sing. It was always a special treat to go to Granddad's house during the Dean Martin Show.

It takes a brave man to refuse medical treatment to prolong his life. He has really gone up in my eyes.
My dad did the same thing. It shook me up a little but I understood. I try to imagine being in that mindset

The chemo and radiation therapy treatments that manufacturers say prolong life by a factor of 5-7 times don't do that. The manufacturers are telling lies. Those treatments are tested by the manufacturers' own in house laboratories and altering the results is easy. When independent test labs test those same exact treatments, those substances kill you 5-7 times faster.
One of my elderly neighbour (mid 80s) was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. The kindest thing for him was palliative care. However his daughter persuaded him to have chemo. He lasted 6 months most of it with the miserable chemo symptoms. I personally feel the medics were downright incompetent and his daughter verging on selfish. There are always ifs/buts/excuses but nobody would dream of putting a beloved pet through what he had to endure.
Most people die of cancer. Wasting your last moments living like a vegetable seems futile. Maybe artificial intelligence can unlock better cures for cancer. Its still a fairly barbaric treatment process as pf late.
I’ve always been in love with this man & he passed when I was 8. Don’t know why always been attached to him. My mom bought me this Dean doll that would play Christmas music & dance around I would play it over & over again. There was indeed something special about that man.

Thankyou for this trip down memory lane. As a young woman sharing a flat in Sydney with 3 other girls, we NEVER missed the Dean Martin Show. NEVER. We didn't realise he was winging it. He was hilarious, and though just a little naughty, never tasteless. I guess losing his beautiful son was a bridge too far. Thanks for the memories Dean, and may you rest in peace.

I shed some tears when Mr. Martin died. I was 35. I had been a huge fan of his. At least 30 years. He was very special to me. And, since his passing. He’s been very special to my memory.
He was 78, he may have been ill but he lived a full life, tragedies and triumphs, so it wasn’t a tragic end.
We all die, it’s not the way we die but the way we live that matters. He had his problems but he loved his children and cared for his family, it was a good life.
At a late 79, I ain’t done yet.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be Dean Martin. He wrote the book on cool. Excellent tribute.
Dean Martin led a full life, and full lives include tragedy and loss. Nobody leaves without their share of cuts and bruises.

This is wisdom at it's Best. I am eighty and complaining about looking two decades younger, and feeling twenty. I never smoked thank God. I, too, will refuse cancer treatment. If it is stage one, you have a Chance. If not, it is a brutal treatment to undergo.
My Wife underwent Cancer Treatment upon Stage 4 Diagnosis, She suffered more, No way would I Endure the Pain.. Side effects of Chemo an radiation are unrealistic an Barbaric. @@aimeekubik8803

My wife and were in Las Vegas and decided to renew our wedding vows. For fun a Sanatra impersonator officiated..however the guest appearance of the Dean Martin impersonator was the highlight. Especially when he broke into singing our new laughter filled wedding song "Thats why the Lady is a Tramp".. Thanks Dino for a lifetime of humor and music..

His son, Dean Paul Martin Jr. was a pilot in the California Air National Guard. I met him at one of our wing parties, he was a nice guy, not as arrogant as some aircrew were, and offered me a ride home when my ride apparently left the party early. He and his RIO were sadly killed in a crash in their F-4 a year or so later.
Junior was vectored into the mountain near Palm Springs in IMC. He didn't have a chance.

@@ccrider00 Dean Jrs. plane wasn't involved in the Monrovia crash. It was as stated misvectored in IMC conditions. I read the accident report and was interviewed as part of the investigation (my crew loaded the practice bombs on that aircraft.)
It was rough dealing with that.
In 1968 I was living in Beverly Hills right off Rodeo Drive. It was 1:30 in the morning and I wandered out onto the deserted street. Here comes this Yellow Lamborghini P400 rolling slow. It was the only one in America in 1968. I knew immediately who it belonged to because Dean Martin had bought the first one off the line for his son's 16th birthday.
I stepped out onto the yellow line and flagged him down. And of course, it was Dino, age 17. I introduced myself as a friend of his father and asked how he liked the car as we shook hands. What a kid he was. Handsome as hell, with thick gold hair, big hands, a strong handshake, polite and friendly - It was easy to see why his dad absolutely adored him. Any father would be proud to have such a manly, charming son.

Across the street a young girl emerged from a club wearing a sumptuous mink and
little else. She was gorgeous and alone. Dino excused himself, drove over to her, and after a brief conversation she got into the car and they drove off. I thought how great it must be to be young, rich, and handsome with a yellow Lamborghini. Here it is 63 years later and I'm still talking about it. Dean was never the same after Dino died. Part of him died with his boy.
I worked in Las Vegas in the entire 1980's and saw Dean many times. He and Red Fox would go to the back of the Union Plaza for coffee and privacy. After his son was killed flying his jet into a mountain he was never the same. He lost the light in his life and was not the same after that. But who among us would not feel the same way if we lost our children? Very sad and tragic. RIP Dino, we all love and miss you!

He was the background to my childhood. His show, movies and the Rat Pack. He was my favorite of the group. He had a swagger about him that was infectious. He was a true talent.
He was my generation's most iconic and most liked screen hero. We never missed any of his starrers in the 60's, in the only theatre in our town, Warangal, Alankar, which was exclusive for Hollywood movies.
I think he was a good guy, and a great singer!!! I'm a child of the 60's, but when his songs came on the radio, I enjoyed his songs as much as Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, etc. A crushing blow when his son died. Rest Peacefully, Dean you earned it❤❤❤❤🎶🎶🎶
Thank you a thousand times for this presentation. Seeing Dean Martin on TV a lot and at the movies some, I enjoyed his work but had not appreciated him as I now do. He was a “straight up” fellow who loved his kids and was severely wounded by his son’s tragic passing. Opposing segregation was not a given in his day, but he did the right thing.

My late FIL went to "Big Red" High School in Steubenville, Ohio. Dean was in a Steubenville parade one year, and my FIL went to see if Dean would remember him. As Dean rode past my FIL, Dean's eyes widened as he pointed his finger then waved with enthusiasm at him. I had a feeling that my FIL wasn't the only face who Dean recognized 😊.
Well done. I already knew everything in your video, yet I watched it to the end. The trials and tribulations you describe do not diminish his career one bit. It makes him more human. He was the greatest all-round entertainer I know. He had a great unique voice, he could act, he had a hit TV show, and he had a very sharp wit. I never saw him live but was fortunate to spend some time with his late son Ricci and daughter Deana.
Dean Martin was the best of the best. Your right he had it all a very special talent. Sad about his Son Dino whom was also talented and genuine like his dad.
He was a legend and gave his fans pure joy.

One of my favourite, very underrated stars. Dean was the sole reason that just prior to her death, Marilyn Monroe was rehired to her last film, Something's got to Give: after she was fired for prolonged absences due to an ongoing sinus infection. It was a landmark million dollar deal for the time. As Marilyn's co-star, Dean refused to work with any of the replacements the Studio proposed. A true friend.

Thank you … as grew up Malibu Colony early 60’s as a young teen … and there was Dean on the beach always drinking something … so my parents joked he was drinking his obligatory martinis … but now we know, not true. Out of everyone he ever worked with he was always my fav … something so genuine about him combined with a great gift for humor.
My wife and I have seen many acquaintances and loved ones undergo cancer treatments. We have agreed that we will never undergo such horrible "cures".

Agree! Have had 3 family member die of cancer. The treatments did nothing but prolong miserable suffering. The chemo made them SO sick it was horrible. Lots of money to made off sick people though!

If mine comes back, I won't treat it next time, I'll just do hospice since my children are raised and I have no responsibilities. My husband had stage 4 throat cancer 18 years ago. He had chemo and radiation. He is alive and well today so please don’t ridicule cancer treatments.

People underestimated Dean Martin. When Martin and Lewis broke up, everyone thought that Lewis star would rise sky high and that Martin would fade. Instead, it soon became clear that Lewis was holding Martin back! Martin went on to have a very successful Movie career while Jerry Lewis movies, slowly began to lower in quality!
I COULDN'T STAND JERRY LEWIS. HE WAS ANNOYING AND NOT FUNNY. HE TREATED EVERYONE LIKE DIRT AND WAS ABUSIVE TO HIS CHILDREN.
I just acquired a 9 volume set of The Best of the Dean Martin Variety show. I will be watching it soon. I was alive when it was on, but we only got 1 channel, CBS, Black and White, until near the end of 1969. I definitely remember the Gold diggers and the Dingaling Girls. I was 12, then 13, with my hormones kicking in. LOL In fact, the Matt Helms movie The Wrecking Crew, specifically the catfight between Sharon Tate and Nancy Kwan, was something. LOL
I never thought Lewis was funny, just juvenile. His later years were sad and pathetic.
Jerry lewis had a huge jealousy streak. It wrecked every relationship he ever had.

Agree - 100%. Norman Lear, famous writer - started writing for Dean and Jerry in 1950, but he left after 3 years because he couldn't handle Jerry's control freakery any longer. He said that Dean competed with nobody, but Jerry constantly competed with Dean, and they'd find him on the floor in fetal position feeling sorry for himself, and would have to call his doctor. Norman Lear also said that Dean was the funnier of the 2 and was able to make Lear laugh into fits just by moving a little finger. Dean had looks, he was smoking hot (according to my millennial daughter), he could sing, he was lovable, kind, and talented - but he'd had enough after 9 years, during which time Angie Dickinson said it was "open warfare" between the 2 of them. Jerry took control of the writing, and edged Dean out more and more.
Jerry would never have done it without Dean, and it's a shame Dean spent so much time with Lewis. Sinatra forced a reconciliation, but later on Carson, Dean put the lie to the notion that he and JL were friends. Just one eyeroll.
Any idea that Lewis was funny is a joke. Laughable yes, funny no.

It seems Dean worked hard for all that he accomplished. I have always enjoyed his shows through the 1970s and beyond.
Dean was born Dino Crocetti of Steubenville, Ohio. There was a lot of heavy industry (steel) in the area, men with paychecks, and hence illegal casino restaurants in the hills. (They eventually took the croupiers to start Las Vegas.) Dean also played notorious clubs run by organized crime in Cleveland and Columbus. This information is contained in NIck Tosches excellent Dean Martin biography. Dean was an Ohioan, and he definitely got his start there.

One thing to add to this.He and Jeane drew together in grief after Dino passed away.And in their last year's lived on the same street and comforted each other.Jeane never remarried or had a relationship with anyone else.They truly loved each other

DEAN was an amazing singer and performer. His skits in his shows are the stuff of legend. I watched a rerun of his shows and enjoyed them tremendously.
I had the privilege of meeting Dean in a small Italian restaurant in Beverly Hills in the mid 80's. He was absolutely charming! He held my hand within both of his and we chatted. As I turned to leave he pulled me gently towards him and kissed me on the cheek. I floated back to my hotel. He was lovely. Purely lovely. And more gorgeous than you can imagine!! (An aside: I have Alo met and spent time with Debbie Reynolds, Jimmy Caan, Kevin Bacon, and Ted Danson. They were also very very nice people. Not one of them full of themselves. Jimmy used to answer his telephone just saying "Hi, this is Jimmy." For you REAL old timers: Rod Cameron used to come and stay at our home in Rhode Island on Narragansett Bay. He tried to talk my Mom into running away with him. Mom told my Dad and Rod was never asked to come to our home again !!!!! Lolol
Awwwww Loved Dino! Always my favourite singer and comedian. Saddened by his passing, I think he was more grounded and genuine than so many celebrities since. RIP Dean Martin, it was lovely seeing those old clips. ❤
You can hear Dean Martin songs on lots of modern movies. Ive heard two of his songs on two different movies just this last week. Whatever his flaws hes still much loved.

well he led an amazing life and the story of how he met jerry lewis and both their lives changed so quickly is fascinating. i love his voice and he was also a good actor and from everything i've read a genuinely nice guy. thanks for the music and laughs Dean.

Dean Martin was a huge star of my parent's generation and l spent my childhood listening to him. I absolutely adored him. He epitomised handsome and suave and sang like a God. I still adore his voice.

There was something special about Dean Martin that was so smooth and natural that he always looked like he was enjoying himself without trying...He made John Wayne look better when he was in the movie....I liked his singing style very laid back.
