He was as sober as a judge. You can't perform for two hours, remembering every lyric and singing in tune when you're sloshed. A real pro.
Correct. He had a rep for being a drunk but he did his performances sober - acting slightly sloshed because thats what the audience expected.

I’m 74. I grew up listening to Dino. I still love him. It’s always a joy to watch him. Cool never goes out of stile. RIP Dino. King of Cool.
Shoot, it’s 2020 and Dean’s STILL as hilarious, his voice is so soothing, and I miss The Rat Pack dearly.
With one exception in Sammy Davis, nice fellow but empty in his singing.

If you look and listen carefully, he never misses a beat in his songs, and although his speech is blurry on purpose it will be utterly impossible to do all the things he does on stage correctly if one were to be drunk for real, motor skills and neuro system will never coordinate when one is smashed, Dino plays the latter to a T, in reality, he will have apple juice in his glass. Love this man, and I am 60 years young, I've been listening to him since I was a kid, his style, manners, wit, humour and charisma set him apart from the pack.
Yes an act he stumbled on by accident, he obviously had a sleepy drawl speaking impediment of some kind, however the drunk act can be boorish after a while, he didn't need to because he was terrific singer anyway, nowadays it wouldn't be seen as such a clever act at all

Theres a book on the Rat Pack and.it said by this time Dean had a heavy percoden addiction by this time.

Totally agree, look at some modern artists who are starting to realise it, Cliff's album 'Bold As Brass', Robbie Williams did a tribute to the Rat Pack at the Royal Albert Hall, that spurned an album 'Swing When You're Winning,, there are more too, such as Michael Bublé etc

Deans very last show was at the old MGM in las vegas. His son recently died as he sang two songs then told the crowd he can not do this anymore, Drinks on him and refunds to all, thank you and get home safe.
He was so underrated, even by me. And I’ve been listening to my same 15 Dean Martin records in my Dean Martin themed room for 3 Dino years
Dean at 60...he still had it all...the voice was still deano...the command of the stage, and the good looks that made the ladies swoon....
Can you imagine the time when you could go and see dean Martin and Sinatra would be there to, incredible times

A master entertainer ! I was at this concert in May of '77 and remember standing in line for more than 6 hours for tickets the first day they went on sale in February. I later got to shake hands with Dean & Frank and spent a few minutes talking with Ken Lane after the show. I miss them all !

Once, another cabby had said something sideways to me and John said, "You'll be apologizing to me friend or I'll kick yer teeth in, send you to hospital."

I am 77 years old and still watch this man sing every night on on hear .he was and still is the best all round entertainer there was .he alwaws had that smile on his face .just a top man .and so much better than frank Sinarta .but then there is Sammy .o.m.g the best ever .just wish thy were singers around today like them

It broke my heart when Dean's son Dean Paul died in that plane crash back in the eighties. I had two young children then, who are now adults, and I could not begin to imagine losing either one of them. I can understand how Dean was devastated and could never fully come back from such a loss. He loved all of his children and Dean Paul was his first born, so I guess that was something special. They are both now back together in Heaven, so all is well again with them. Jeannie is there too.
Lesley Star Wars Actually Dean had four children by his first wife ( Craig, Claudia, Gail and Deana) So although Dean Paul was the first baby he had with Jeannie, chronologically he was Deans 5th child.

In lockdown, it was life saving to play all the Dino recordings and watch UTube memorabilia. In 1977 saw Frank & Dean live on Dean's 60th Birthday. Had a front seat. Shouted out "I luv you Dean. He came down and gave me a huge hug and a kiss on the lips

Sinatra famously said that he spilled more than Dean drank. For Dean it was more a gimmick. For Sinatra - he drank - and drank a lot.
Actually, friends of his have said his trick was to order lots of drinks and not drink the whole thing each time. He just liked the company, didn't like to be alone at night or something. He drank but he wasn't an alcoholic.
I lived down the block from this theatre , and this day before the show I met mr. Martin with Frank Sinatra and about 15 other made guys and there dates at a restaurant in Tarrytown,they were having a great time and I couldn’t believe my eyes....

Grew up listening to Dean Martin and this brings back so many amazing memories. There will never be an entertainer like Dean ever again.
Dean passed away on Christmas Day 24 years ago and I remember hearing this sad news like it was yesterday.

1977 - Dean was 60 here and I'm 64 now as watching this makes you realize how fast time flies! I thought he hit those high notes extremely well too. You tube is so good at seeing old concerts from a wide variety of performers so thanks for sharing this!

He had a velvet voice, completely natural and better than any of his contemporaries. As is why he was more in demand and more successful with the exception of Sinatra. To opine he wasn't a world class singer from a live performance in the beginning of the twilight of his career is pure ignorance, considering the hundreds of studio recordings, movies and TV shows starting back in the 1950s.
Like I said he had showmanship, a TV Show, Top Ten...that's not proof of quality or talent though. Remember, Adam Sandler's movies were popular once. @@Will_DiGiorgio
