After taking the roll call for his Sunday school class he was teaching he noticed that a young girl he had invited to Sunday School was not there. She had been coming for several weeks and so he went to her home to see if something was wrong. It turned out that she was sick and died from pneumonia several days later. He wrote this song with the thought of people and friends he knew might not be saved and when the books of heaven were opened on Judgement day that their name might not be there.
