The use of damp proof membrane in construction is regulated by British Standards, which state that the sheet should be at least 1200 gauge (or 300 micrometres). Using a thinner sheet could mean your building doesn't comply with regulations, and it can be a costly fix, so 1200 is always recommended
Most damp proof wall membranes are made from HDPE and have a high compressive strength and a long life expectancy (over 30 years).

It is advisable to use rich concrete for the foundation or DPM, etc
It depends on the Thickness of the DPM that is used. There are different thicknesses. A rich concrete doesn't solve the issue of damp if right measures are not put in place.
This plastic sheet, if it's the type used for drying maize, It'll decompose pretty quickly. Real damp proof membranes are designed to withstand that. They are more durable. I bought some and they are much tougher and thicker
I always fear that the walls of the building might not bond to the ground well (with the dpm) in the trenches and in the event of a tremor the building could shift- Could this be an issue?
It depends on the type that is used. There are quality heavy ones and the normal types.
Not really. The weight of the concrete and blocks are enough to sit on the soil so this shouldn't be an issue

Damp proofing is very important, I just saw a video where someone didn't do it and they are looking to fix the problem. I am trying to decide whether to do it like in this video or to apply a damp proofing strip under the first blocks and then use damp proofing paint on the sides...
Damp proof is really important when building. When it isn't done, one could spend a lot to fix dampen walls

My dream is to build a house on a hillside with a view. I am wondering if you can advise which areas in Accra is best for that and perhaps advise on companies that can help with buying land?. I have through research found Aburi to be hillside land but the prices are unreasonable. I am grateful for any advice I get.

Thanks for the information, I've learnt alot....may I know what thickness of foundation strip concrete you cast in the trench for the plinth wall to sit on?
We use a thickness of 6" minimum or more depending on the situation on the ground
Do you advise to use the damp proof paint after after adequately and thoroughly applying laying them in the trenches and on top after backfilling?
Yes, it is best use Bitumen/damp proof paint on the footings, Both inside and outside all the way to the foundation concrete.

Once you know the measurements of the building, you should be able to tell. The dmp comes in different sizes, so you'll have to inquire about that also.
But there’s no drainage , why haven’t you installed drainage pipes in the trenches?
There is hardly planning for draining.. serious problem.

Hello Ishmael, I am building in Ghana from the US and my mason has no clue about the damp proofing other than the additive to the cement. So before he pours the concrete in the trenches I need to figure out figure out where I can purchase the damp proofing materials and how to deliver it to the site. I am building in Aburi amofrom.

I can't give advice to that as i do not know how the situation is. I will recommend you seek advice from a professional who can assess the situation and advise accordingly.

Yes you certainly can especially at places which are waterlogged

No, they don't. Rather they add to the concrete and mortar for the foundation

It is usually advisable when you are working at waterlogged locations but for places that are not, it isn't mandatory unless you prefer to do so.
How do you 'attach' the dpm to the walls (sides) of the foundation walls?
You can nail them or bring them up and place blocks on them as it was done in the video

I didnt put any damp proof membranes in the trenches before casting..i am now worried..is there any other measures u can advise me on to incorporate after casting the trenches to prevent dampness..thanks a lot

Can't recall, but you can get a damp proof paint solution from coral paint
There are quite a few of them, I got one called Aquamuls B60 AE, there is another called Germano B40 and L40. I hope this helps.

you don't put membrane on the footer. concrete mortar and block will not bind to plastic or a poly substance. your walls will be able to come loose at the footer. I have not seen anybody do such a thing. very dangerous to the structure.
