Awesome video! Very informative. I am attempting a furniture restoration for my niece and have several different pieces, including a wood dining set and a laminate/ particle board closet and computer desk. I did some research yesterday and learned that a shellac-based primer would be good at blocking wood bleeding and also help the paint adhere to the laminate but at the hardware store today the sales rep was trying to talk me into buying Gripper, which he said was water-based. I ended up going with the shellac but would a water-based primer work just as well for painting furniture? My niece is a new mom so she'll need something very durable.

excellent, informative, thanks! I want to know about what type of paints you can topcoat over primers. For example, I have been told to never put an oil based paint over a latex primer, and vice versa, but others have told me that mixing them is no problem. Confusing.

Working to restore my fathers house. He was an indoor, windows closed 3 pack a day smoker. Going to clean everything with TSP, my question is, Will the kilz restoration primer work? They apparently no longer use oil but some new technology of water base. The only shellac primer I can find, Bins, is incredibly expensive.

I went to a PPG store recently about a project I am getting ready to do. We are turning a upstairs office I to a nursery. The room has chair rail and bead board (pine) that has at least 1 clear coat on it. The salesperson I spoke to noted that he thinks if I just do a light scuff of the chair rail, bead board and trim them I would not need to prime? We were thinking of using simply white for the trim color and sandy beaches for the wall color (both BM colors). If we were to go with PPG paints which paints would you advise for the trim/bead board and then the walls?

fyi, had a roof leak (now fixed). cause water staining (greyish darkening ) of a white painted ceiling. it took 2x coats of kilz 2 primer and 4x repainting of original paint to reduce perceived darkening. there is STILL a slight difference.
i suppose i should have gone with a oil based primer.

I've been hired to project manage a haunted attraction and we make a lot of strange items into stone looks. Almost anything you can think of you'll find at a thrift store, we can probably find a way to make it stone... anyway, my question is on painting ornate items that have polished finishes or glazes that are too hard to sand well. A lot of stone props we make its easy just to throw monster mud (drywall compound and outdoor paint) or Drylok... but for things that don't really need the extra hardening, or have detail work that we need to keep to spraying, I want to make sure i'm adhering well to the surfaces and it wont chip outside in the elements all year.
I have a project now where I have metal lamps, some kind of ceramic with a glaze and other objects of unknown material that shiny surfaces. I've got a technique for making the stone look with paint, but unsure if I need to prime, or if I can just use spray paints fine.

This is exactly what I searched for today - thank you! You're informative and you stay on topic.I'm a new fan and subscriber. May I get your thoughts about priming a very porous ceiling? The ceilings in my 'new' place had never been painted; they still have the builder-grade, grayish, textured ick that was sprayed...27 years ago. Yes, they're gross. But after cleaning them up a bit, I realized just how porous they are and so I'm a little nervous about which primer to try. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I realize it'd be a blind guess, however yours is likely far better than mine.

Whilst Zinsser products are pretty dear, there are of very good quality. I would use Cover Stain. However, it does flash/grin through emulsion. I had to coat over Cover Stain with Bulls Eye 1-2-3 before attempting to paint with emulsion.
B-I-N is also very good, but dries very quickly, so the finish can be ruined as the shellac gets sticky if you don't finish laying off quick enough. As the solvent is meths /alcohol, that's something that smells quite strong, is flammable and therefore takes getting use to.

Be careful with the Bin shellac primer fumes. Make sure you have adequate ventilation or an exhaust fan. The can now has a bigger flammable label on the front due to some explosions that have been caused from sparks or pilot flames on stoves water heaters etc etc near by. Its also recommended to keep any compressors outside the spraying area to avoid a potential spark up and deadly fire. I have sprayed and rolled Bin primer numerous times and love it. A 3/8 nap premium shed less knit purple roller from home depot part# 1001287431 works great with lightly thinned down paint, dont worry about rough texture at first..it will dry even and sand super easy and smooth. In some cases i have used Bin as primer and top coat for interior portions of cabinets and holds up very well with 2 or 3 coats unsanded. You can tint Bin also, hope this helps.

In my experience, PVA primers are only good for new drywall and mud repairs. They are cheap but if you're painting anything other than new drywall/mud it's similar to using a very thinned out paint.. takes several coats but great for new drywall work.

I still have question please. Builder (1983) used oil paint on whole house trim. Not knowing any better, I used latex over oil on the trim for the last 30 years. I’m repainting the whole house. What primer should I use so my latex adheres and doesn’t peel off with a swipe from the vacuum? I can’t imagine a way to be able to completely strip off all the latex. My den has 32 picture moldings so the trim is extensive. Thank you.

I would recommend giving it a light sand to make sure it's not coming off, then prime it with something like Stix by Insl-X or extreme bond primer by Sherwin-williams!

Redoing the whole house and need to choose colors. I loved the Hale Navy, Cloud White, and Chantilly lace comments. I was leaning towards Chantilly but I think, based on the recommendations I’ll go with the Cloud White since we’re probably going with a light gray flooring. I’m going to get samples and see how they look. Thank you so very much.

(incase someone new reads this) YOU DON"T NEED PRIMER when painting over paint. (So long as the wall isn't plastered with crap like smoke, oil, crayons lol) . Think of it; you want to turn your dark walls light in the least amount of coats right? For extreme changes its going to take three coats. Most ppl look at this as primer then paint then paint. But the thing is, you want your first coat (base coat) to be as opaque as you can. And that will NOT be accomplished with primer. Using a primer strickly to change colors is a bullshit sales pitch because in this case, it'll do very little and you'll still end up putting three MORE coats of SOMETHING on. Buy a less expensive flat paint that is the least transparant and tint it to the color you are going to. Your paint store will know. The local ones. Probably not the $12/hr Home Depot or Lowes ppl. What you are aiming for here isnt quality, sheen, durability, wipeabilty, NONE of that. You are simply trying to get that dark covered. This comes down to opacity.

Hi I bought epoxy tub and tile epoxy paint. I’m going to paint both my awful ugly tub as well as the tiles. It’s weird, the tiles aren’t regular tub tiles, they feel like they are a softer plastic surface. Not the shiny regular tub tiles. I bought epoxy paint to do the tub but I only have enough for two coats for tub. Can I make the paint go a little further by using a primer first over the tiles. Then a coat of the epoxy overtop? If so, what kind of primer should I use. Hopefully it’s not expensive as I can’t afford expensive primer, ugh!

This is great and well done. But... more confused than when i started lol. I know this is geared only towards interior/wall painting but Latex/Oil/Shellac ... mrrrrr what does that mean that Acrylic, Alkyd, and Enamel primers are nevermind traditional gessos / glues. Dont mind me I've just been trying to figure out wtf the difference is between acrylic polymers/mediums and acrylic resins/primers are OR what lime-wash/oil/casein actually requires in terms of primer material--not someone waving an affiliate link for a $70/gallon tub of petrolium distillates with chalk in it-- for the past 4 days... and the corporate nightmare we live in where everyone labels things with the same name, but no explanation or awareness of materials.. seems to making it impossible. Guess i have to go get a material science degree just to make some paint lol. My point is ultimately that they make it so goddamn convoluted in the realm of branded product these days it seems almost impossible to make controlled informed and sustainably repetitive project decisions. I'm venting my frustration, but if anyone happens to have any insight on what actual chemical substances that are in things, will stick to non-porous surfaces & make them porous-ish, feedback would be much appretiated. Pouring over equivalent SDSs for clarification or process of elimination hasnt even be very helpful, when they dont seem to require anything about non toxic acrylics. (I still would really like to know why limewash will apparently stick to [vague unreliable word] "acrylic primers" but not acrylic polymer mediums/paints, or how to even tell if something is ACTUALLY one of those things.
