Do not use a very big zip tie. They don't break as easily as he makes people think-especially if you are in a kayak and not able to keep a steep angle which is necessary to make it break. I use as small of a zip tie as I can find-like those used to zip-tie around a jig skirt. I keep them in my tackle box already anyway
"Bring a couple of zipties with you ... and you can get your anchor stuck all day." That is so beautiful, it's almost poetry. Thank you for this video!
5 years later you're still helping folks with this video. I finally got an anchor for my fishing kayak, I fish near a lot of waterfalls and the currents are always dragging me all over the place. I'm about to use this method thanks again
Awesome. When you're trying to fish a particular spot, an anchor definitely comes in handy. The wind and the currents are always trying to push you about in a kayak.
@@TheManCaveVideo Worked liked a charm, and actually no snags. Caught a few panfish and had a blast. I used a 1.5lb anchor and it was plenty for my kayak.
I know this video is 6 years old, but I just wanted to add my thanks to TheManCave for putting this up. I have recently started fishing more from my kayak and added an anchor just like the one in the video to the boat. It wasn't long before the anchor became hopelessly stuck at about 30 feet down. I struggled with it for a while and experienced all the dangers of trying to pull hard from a kayak. I had no choice but to cut it free and lose 30 feet of rope plus the anchor. I simply had not done my homework on how to rig this style anchor. Thanks again.
Good Video. I'd add a few points though. Just remember that you loose all leverage on the anchor when your floating in a kayak. Use the smallest zip tie you can find or you may not be able to apply enough force to break it. ( I've found 10# mono to work good too.) Also, always try to pull in line with the length of the kayak and not off the side otherwise you stand a good chance of rolling over when that connection suddenly breaks.
Yep , I have lost 4 of these anchors because zip tie would not break . I started cutting zip ties in half . But then , I found that mushroom anchors work better . I have used a 5 lb mushroom anchor for years and it has never gotten stuck yet .
I've watched plenty of "How to anchor kayak" videos, and this guy talking about his "ang'r" and how to "ang'r" his kayak is by far the most brilliant. Awesome video, thanks so much! 😎👍👍👍👍
I was just trying to figure out how to tie rope to my new anchor for my new to me kayak and this was the first thing that popped up in my search! very clever! thank you I'm very excited for my next time out!
Just bought an anchor just like this for my kayak. The instructions that came with it were terrible. Found this video and made perfect sense. Thank you!
what a great video! it was explained well and it was so simple even I could understand it. you can bet I'll be telling my friends about it! I'm new to kayak fishing. I was fixing to use an anchor from my jonboat . hell, it's so much larger than what I saw in the video. it's damn near big enough to stop an oil tanker! you've got yourself a new subscriber!
I wanted to thank you very much sir. Today while fishing my anchor got snagged on something. I was thinking I was going to have to cut the line but because I had it setup how you said it did EXACTLY what your video did! Amazing work sir! Thank you very much. I can attest personally that this method works!
I literally hurt after laughing so hard about " bring a couple zip ties and get your anchor stuck all day" What a great idea, thanks for the tip, i will be getting one of these rather than the ball type i think
Awesome video. I just got my first foldable anchor and was wondering the purpose of the eye at the bottom and you showed me. Now, I also understand the reason the top eye on the shaft has a hole with a sharp inside edge, it will help cut the zip tie.
if you concerned about the zip ties, you can use two of the very small ties hooked together, or substitute twist ties. ( the kind you get on loaves of bread etc) thank you for posting this
Zip ties are very strong even small ones. If you are in a kayak pulling on your anchor rope trying to break the tie there is a REAL possibility of tipping over. A lot of pressure has to be used to break the tie. Trust me, done it. Use thin string or light mono.
Great idea! I'll have to see if my anchor has a hole at the bottom to even do this. BTW there's a Harbor Freight just about in every city and their zip ties are pretty weak and would work perfect versus say a 3M or better quality zip tie.
I lost an anchor under a a bridge on a nearby lake. I fell victim to some dry-rotted rope on the boat. Next time I go to that Lake I'm taking my action camera so I can stick it under water and hopefully find my anchor and hook it with a duck decoy retrieving Pole.
I have a jet ski with a grapnel anchor. The bottom of the anchors eye is too small to fit a shackle to it. Can I use several zip ties to attach the chain there?? And then another that could break on the shaft/handle/top? I don’t know all the lingo.
I agree the way you tie your Anchorline to the bottom of the anchor but by making a loop and leaving some slack in the line and then tiny yard tie wrap you’re pulling on the tire rack first and it will break and then flip over to the bottom section of the anchor. Must of fishing is Salt water.
Just keep in mind once you do get your anchor stuck and you yank on it and break the zip tie it turns over and comes free but when that happens you loose the metal thing that Locks your anchor closed once the zip tie breaks it slides right off the end. It happened to me
I’m just reading these comments today. Do you even need the metal shackle on the anchor itself? The eye of my anchor is so small that I can’t for a shackle through it. Can you use rope between the chain and the anchor?
I have been doing it for quite some time but I've got 5 feet of chain attached to my anchor in case it gets stuck to something that could cut the rope.
What would be bette dis Velcro strap then that way u can tie it to the rop with fishing string or something then u don’t have to keep CHaning out the zip tie and it’s easier to get off the anchor
This is a good technique. To further simplify it, I remove the shackle from the front end of the anchor and tie the line directly to the hole in the anchor.
Ron Mehringer bad idea, as the anchor lands in the bottom, the fixed rope will wear out or get cut, the shackle provides distance away from that bottom eye to keep abrasions to a minimum.
I was going to do this until I realized, how do you prevent losing the piece that keeps the arm part of the anchor down. If its upside down on the way up nothing to stop from losing that part.
You can put a large zip tie just under the flattened part of the shaft to keep it from falling off. I will probably do this to mine now that you asked this.
+Baseballfan19946 you're welcome. Thanks for the nice comments. Yes you can get those rings at the hardware store. That one actually came with that anchor from Academy.
Just saw this. On the way to my shed now to re-tie my anchor. No, really. Thank you. This is great.

I too carry some thin zip ties with me now.
Came in handy. Saved my stuck anchour, about six months ago. This works!
"Bring a couple of zipties with you ... and you can get your anchor stuck all day." That is so beautiful, it's almost poetry. Thank you for this video!
LOL. Thanks!

Hopefully if there is a next time, it will end better. Thanks for the comments.
You just saved a lot of people a lot of anchors. Thank you.

That’s a slick trick. Thanks bud. I’m new to kayaking and was dreading losing an anchor. Hopefully now I won’t. 👍👍
Just bought an anchor just like this for my kayak. The instructions that came with it were terrible. Found this video and made perfect sense. Thank you!
You are welcome. I'm glad this was helpful.
ryan kelner at least you got instructions, all I got was a receipt.
I guarantee you this just saved me an anchor... thank you for the info and the straight to the point video.
Awesome tutorial. I’m sure there’s many of us out here who could benefit from this. Thank you 🙂👍🏻
what a great video! it was explained well and it was so simple even I could understand it.
you can bet I'll be telling my friends about it!

Wow thanks for video, friend was telling me this trick but I couldn't understand and visualise it, your video with the log was great
It's a good idea to use another D shackle at the top to prevent the possibility of losing the locking ring.
Great visual demonstration and explanation of why you tie the anchor this way. Thanks.
Appreciate the info I was wondering why it had a place to tie on the bottom of the anchor. Wish I could give you three thumbs up for the video
You're welcome, and thanks for the kind comments.
Make more videos. Best instructional video I've ever watched.

Very explanation of how to set up an anchor and how it can be retrieved when stuck. Good work !
+Andreas Pankewytch thanks for the kind words.
Awesome video. I just got my first foldable anchor and was wondering the purpose of the eye at the bottom and you showed me.
Now, I also understand the reason the top eye on the shaft has a hole with a sharp inside edge, it will help cut the zip tie.
Wow! Im learning so much today about Kayaks and the important tricks and tips! Thanks!!
That's awesome!
Thanks for this. Just lost an anchor yesterday. I'll be trying this on my new one.
Very clever idea there young man !!!
Thanks!
nice, one of the best explanations on this I have seen👌
thanks, very informative and helpful, I'm new to kayaking and this may have saved me a big problem and the cost of a new anchor.
+David Hunt thanks for the nice comments.
Good job of explaining it. Zip ties are new for me, this beats the light line tie off.
Awesome video. Glad I watched this as I just ordered an anchor!
+BigCountry12486 thanks!
if you concerned about the zip ties, you can use two of the very small ties hooked together, or substitute twist ties. ( the kind you get on loaves of bread etc) thank you for posting this
Wish I'd seen this video about 6 yrs ago, wouldn't have lost my 5 lb anchor. Thanks
Good , simple, straightforward video man. Sounds like you are Southern born too, like me.
+Carl Humphreys thanks for the kind words.
TY
thanks
very helpful.
Most people don't know this.
+K_pigeon you're welcome. Thanks for the comments.

I was gonna say, a string light be better or even some bread ties would be good enough to drop the anchor down straight and have it dig in.
I lost my first anchor because I tied it directly to the top, thanks for the video
Great video, only wish I saw it before I lost my anchor to a snag! :)
Great idea! I'll have to see if my anchor has a hole at the bottom to even do this. BTW there's a Harbor Freight just about in every city and their zip ties are pretty weak and would work perfect versus say a 3M or better quality zip tie.

This is a great idea my friend !! Thanks so much for this video 👍
Whose anchor rope was it that got snagged in my prop. Do this technique now!
Very well explained and videod close in. Thank you.
Thanks!
Great demonstration , thanks.
You are welcome!
Great video brotha ill be using this idea on the wisconsin river. Cheers!
Thanks. Just lost an anchor in the Gulf. Now its time to tie another one on and I'll give this a shot.
I lost an anchor under a a bridge on a nearby lake. I fell victim to some dry-rotted rope on the boat. Next time I go to that Lake I'm taking my action camera so I can stick it under water and hopefully find my anchor and hook it with a duck decoy retrieving Pole.
I wish I had brought my large magnet. 12 hour drive down there so I'll be kissing that goodbye.
Thanks, wish I would've watched this video before yesterday
Such good information I'll have to check the rest of your Channel
First video I've seen that shows how that works.
I am new to Kayak Fishing. Excellent Tip. Thank you
This is brilliant!!
Thanks ill be changing my anchor tie points tomorrow morning before i go fishing
Very cleaver. Very sneeky. Good logic. Thanks a million.
Cheers.
Lol love it. "You can get ya anchor stuck all day!"
Very great tip! Thank you!
Thanks! You are welcome.
That is simple enough. Cool trick with the zip tie.
Superb idea!
Thanks!

wish I would have watched this last week before loosing my anchor
I hope it's OK for a woman to watch your videos; thanks, very good information!
6 years later definitely going to use this now. Lost 1 anchor this year already

Thanks for the vid. I found it very helpful.
very good video, very clear
Good stuff. Nice knot.
Is there another method to do this with out using plastic?
This is great!! Thanks for the video
Many thanks. Very helpful.
Awesome video, very helpful.
Just keep in mind once you do get your anchor stuck and you yank on it and break the zip tie it turns over and comes free but when that happens you loose the metal thing that Locks your anchor closed once the zip tie breaks it slides right off the end. It happened to me
I found a solution for this. Put a zip tie around the top so that it blocks the metal thing from going over board
Put an overhand loop @ the anchor shank head, zip tie that. make sure there is some slack in-between the head of the anchor and the crown.
thanks pal was really helpful
+Kha Khan you are welcome. Thanks for the comment and for watching. I really appreciate it.
Perfect thanks works a treat!
Perfect demo
You want to wire the pin of the shackle to the eye of the shackle it will stop that turning loose
Thanks for the tip.
Great advice, Thanks.
What would be bette dis Velcro strap then that way u can tie it to the rop with fishing string or something then u don’t have to keep CHaning out the zip tie and it’s easier to get off the anchor
Sweet thank you for the video
what type of rope do you use for an anchor
SUPER skill, thanks!
very useful, thanks
You're welcome! Thanks for the comment.
Great help! Thanks.
I just tie on opposite end lol. No zip tie needs and kayak doesn't move. I know the anchor will perform better doing it this way though.
Great idea, I like it!
Thanks!
Very clever indeed.
Excellent !!
Thanks!
Awesome video, thank you

Excellent!
Smart :) Thank you
Wouldn't that only make the anchor as strong as the zip tie
that's killer, dude
Thanks!
Brilliant
Great advise.
Thanks bro
Have you ever got the anchor stuck and break the zip tie to pull it up?
Just once.
I find using raffia string is cheaper and easier, sometimes the zip tie is too strong.
Good tip.
Agree cable ties are a bad idea light string is much safer.
That’s too expensive, just use 100% cotton kitchen twine, it’s biodegradable and if fish eat it it is digestible.
brilliant
100th like, nice helpful video thank you. Assuming you get one of those rings for the bottom at a hardware store
+Baseballfan19946 you're welcome. Thanks for the nice comments. Yes you can get those rings at the hardware store. That one actually came with that anchor from Academy.
NorthBoundProductions Amazon, eBay, Harbor Freight, Walmart, and Northen Tools have them too.
