@@LawrencevanLingen I've made a rope following your instructions. Thank you very much again, Lawrence. I am really enjoying it. It's made of a 18 mm rope and came out to weigh 420 g. I've been using it for a while now. I would really like to try a heavier rope - perhaps around twice the weight of this one (800 g - 1 kg). Do you have any recommendations/directions for making such rope? I bought the rope for my current one directly from the manufacturer, but they only have one thicker rope, which doesn't weight much more, so I don't know what kind of rope I should be looking for. Or do heavy ropes have some actual weight inside of them? 🤔
I made it! Thanks for the explanations! Ordered a 16 mm Polypropylene rope 16 times braided with insert (hope this translation makes sense in English).m, got it from a nautic rope shop. I’m 1,9 m and ordered 5m rope - with the 2 nodes from this video it’s still 30-40cm too long for me - have added 1 more node each side right behind the handles - now its perfect. Such rope weights about 550g (110g/m) - should be ok for a beginner flow rope. Have added some office desk cable wrapping to protect it in the middle.
Great video and helped a lot. Please next time just stand back more and full frame it. The crop makes things more difficult to understand d than they could be.
It is not that we have short attention spans, it is that some people like to prattle on in their videos and not get to the point, you have decided you have something to tell us so tell us. Might be a good idea to burn off those endpoints and not rely on the electrical tape. Thankyou for that I like to have my tow ropes ETC tidy, this will help.
Amazing and helpful video! Clever figuring out the knot! What are your thoughts on using a jute or cotton rope? Should I stick to synthetic ropes as a beginner or can I use a natural material too?
Thank you. I am desperate for a good natural fiber rope. That tend to be a bit light and some are harsh on the hands. But should be ok if you already have.
Hey Lawrence. Hope you are well let me know when you are in South Africa again so the i can get a flow rope from you. Going to try and make one in the meantime.
No it is something I want to research. Need to go in person to an awesome rope store. The cotton ropes seem too light, so probably a jute rope, buts kinda harsh on the hands for most. If you find a great natural fiber rope please let me know
Love this video, subscribed - seems you are the only one (that I can find) that explains the better knot technique, but I am having an issue following based on how you are holding it, is there another tutorial with illustrations or even the name of what this technique is called so I can replicate it successfully?
Oh no. I will maybe try again. I don’t know what the knot is called and I did try find the name online and how to do it. Took me quite a while to figure it out. Sorry it’s not that obvious. If I get time I will do it again
Really nice video, clear and concise. Question though… any particular kind of marine double braid? There are rigging, mooring, docklines, and probably a couple others…
Interesting. The rope I usually use is double braid marine nylon rope, says it’s used for marine, boating and sailing lines. It’s not more specific than that. The rope is typically flexible and soft on the hands but heavy.
Merci 🙏🏼 Lawrence I did buy a rope, think it’s too light. But I’m using it Also, after my 16 minute warmup I walk backwards for 2minutes and when I run my next 16” I feel like I’m floating. And the run is effortless. I used to play broomball and fell on my butt, a LOT (!!) and I’m working on that too - probably why I get so tight in my breathing So much for me to work on. Haha I appreciate your videos and sharing you expertise. Thank you. thank you. thank you again Lawrence 👋🏻 Chris, the old lady running in Ontario, Canada 🤣 ☀️
Checked your videos out after watching the Dr Chatergee podcast and looking forward to trying these out. What can I use as a substitute for a rope if I don't have one to start off with? Thanks :)
Skipping rope, Thera cord, electrical cable we have used rolled up sweat pants or a towel but that just for demonstration. You will need a rope of some sorts if you want to continue. There is a video of flow rope for endurance runners that will help you understand the why. Good luck and welcome 🙏🏻
Hi Lawrence, any tips how I can run with an even gait? I am still recovering from a right hip flexor labral tear for one year. I still struggle to finish a 5km run. I do your awesomier! And it helps. Thank you
Add backward walking and once that feels good add Tyre walking forward for resistance. It’s really helpful to think that tension causes a twist and that causes assymetries, so if you unwind, open up, things fall into place or smooth out. The flow rope can really help make you more symmetrical too
For rope swinging polyester and nylon ropes are amazing. For the environment I would prefer and natural fibre rope, just have not found one that is dense enough or easy enough on the hands or feels good from a tactile perspective.
Interesting, thank you for sharing. Question: Why bother with the complicated second method when the first method is so much easier? Also, should the rope have some stretch or can it be static (no give)?
That was in Africa. Yes the rope itself for a great flow rope is expensive. I have taught flow rope principles and the patterns to people swinging sweat pants, so if money is an issue, find any rope, repurpose and swing it and don’t sweat the details. Good luck
@@LawrencevanLingen I appreciate your response. I agree that anything with weight or resistance can be used with-like rope limits. You revealed to me you have great intentions for those you help. Nice to meet you Sir. Glad to see your heart is real.

I'm from India and I want to try rope flow. I got blank stares when I asked for "marine rope" in stores here. As rock climbing is popular here, I could find those ropes, when I asked for "double braided" rope. But, then I got asked whether I'm looking for static rope or dynamic rope. Pls suggest which one should I go for? Also, whether 10 mm rope (weight 60g per meter) is good one to start with rope flow? I would rather start with a good rope than waste my time with an okay one, leading to poor opinion of rope flow. So, pls give me bad news, if that's what I need to hear from you :)
You can swing absolutely any rope and get benefit from it. Rock climbing ropes will be fine but a bit stiff, not flexible. A narrow rope swings faster , a denser rope, many fibers (like a climbing rope) is heavier and swings faster. A double braid, nylon, marine rope is soft, flexible and reasonably heavy. We use 16mm marine ropes because the increased diameter slows the rope down a bit which helps people swing in a relaxed fashion which helps with learning and also to create space in joints and fascia. 10mm is what I started on and should be fine, and a rope climbing rope is also fine. Many people want to swing fast and so using a dense, thinner rope is ideal for them. Later for my athletes we use a 1 inch thick rope for weight and strength.
@@LawrencevanLingen thanks a ton for quick response. It exactly what I sought to know. I'll start with what I got in the store - climbing rope. I want to swing slow, meditatively :) But, I think I'll start fast as the only swings that I've done are with skipping ropes. So, I'm going to need a bit on unlearning to get over my habit. I'm keen because my shoulder joint can use more space. So, when I travel to a coastal city, I'll find a marine rope. Thanks once again :)
I’ve found a local supplier of nautical ropes, but he only has 18mm rope, do you think it would be too thick? Thanks for the great content; I was literally googling how to make a flow rope last night! Such good timing my friend.
It should be fine. We swing the rope slowly in order to feel the big muscles working and to find fascia connections and to learn motor patterns. If you swing it fast for fitness it might be a bit much to start with.
@innerunmer welcome to my neck of the woods. When you say you book it at the marine shop, where exactly? I jave neen looking at local stores but unable to find some
@@efebayndr888 I have made over 300 ropes and it seems to be the perfect length for a 16mm rope, maybe a little long for a 12mm, but the person ordering the rope can always trim or tie a knot in the rope if it’s too long, if it’s too short it’s a waste
