Check the small plastic block that holds a vertical shaft allowing the forward reverse or lower and higher speed shifter to engage or disengage. A small crack in this block cause problems you explained with your tractor. The block is mounted on the fire wall and there is one on the right and left side. They are are about 1 /12 " x 3" in size. Yes that seems like the problem. My plo w mounts have a stem to keep the shaft in. Good luck 👍
