There is no other arena like it. There really is a feeling when you walk into that building. It has a soul to it. Then when it is packed with 16,300 fans and they get amped up, it takes it to another level. I've been there a few games and it gets so loud that you can't hear the person next to you, even if they're trying to tell you something. Then when a Jayhawk is on the free throw line, it's so quiet that you can hear the air moving through the vents. There have been many games where the announcers, who go to every arena to cover games, stop and marvel at the crowd noise, which they don't do very often for other broadcasts. It's too bad that we're not going to have that this year, but I can only imagine how loud that building is going to be once they have a full house in there again.
@@kroutdoors7422 I haven't had the pleasure of going to a game there. It would be an amazing experience I'm sure. I have tremendous respect for a building named after a former Jayhawk.
I was at the Jacque Vaughn game against Indiana. Had no voice for 3 days after that. It was also insane the next season when Jason Kidd and Cal got thumped. And when Randy Rutherford went off for 45 but we still beat Okla St.
Before clicking, I thought, "Number #1 has to be the T-Rob block." And I was not disappointed. It's hard to tell, but it's like it was so loud that the audio went out when he blocked that shot.
Was thinking that or the Triple-OT gm. against OU (w/ Hield) [too new relative to when video was made?]....or the 15 pts. Dwn., 15 pts. up UCLA gm. in Dec. '95.
UCLA vs Kansas on December 2, 1995 was the loudest game I experienced out of about 100 games I attended at the Fieldhouse. So much that Ryan Robertson mentioned it four years later on Senior day.
Think my fav game @AFH was in Feb 2006 vs Oklahoma. Wright/Chalmers & BRush were Freshman and still trying "find themselves together." KU was dwn 16pts in 2ndHalf. Those 3 found themselves that 2ndHalf and gelled together on way to a massive comeback win vs a very good OU team. 8 months later basically the same KU + a Darell Arthur beat #1Florida and reigning Champs in Las Vegas. That was a PRETTY important/epic gm I was at now looking back. Bulk that team was foundation 08 National Title team. Cuz Kansas wasn't even ranked that late in Conf Play. With Rush/Wright/Chalmers/Kaun in Feb 2006.
I was SOOOOOO hungover watching that 1/1/2005 GTech 11am tipoff gm on my couch. Maybe my fav Kansas gm watching on TV. I wasn't hungover by end! KU literally CURED me.
Despite being a die-hard Mizzou fan...I really want to experience at least one game in the Allen Fieldhouse. Even though I deeply dislike the Jayhawks, everytime I see that crowd go nuts, for some reason...it just puts a smile on my face. I just love college atmospheres like that!
Well you will get a chance to do exactly that this year because Missouri will be playing in Phog Allenfieldhouse this year. Don’t worry we hate your Missouri Tigers too, believe me the feeling is mutual. You are going down this season.
I doubt I can experience an Allen Fieldhouse game anytime soon, but I hope I can. I'm a huge fan of home-court advantages and loud crowds. I hope I can experience at least one game in there.
You're more than welcomed anytime Darkmaster23. And don't forget, there is plenty of room on the KU bandwagon just in case you've had a change of heart with your rooting interests.
Dec 2 1995. UCLA defending champs up by 15 at half. Quietest fieldhouse. Kansas won by 15. 2nd half of sustained mayhem that hasn’t seen the like since. The roaring came in giant waves for 25 minutes. UCLA was shelled by the end.
I realize it wasn't during an AFH game, but the sound from the people there watching the title game in 2008 when Chalmers hits the shot? That had to be up there among the loudest.
My cousin and aunt were at the Fieldhouse watcing the 08 championship game and they say that's the loudest they'd ever heard it in there even though it was only half full. Half full of students, though. During a game it's about a quarter full of students.
Can confirm. I was also there. It went from a morgue to absolute pandemonium. I had my 12 year old son with me. On our way out I told him to grab my belt and don’t let go.
I dont know what year it was but I remember a KU game when Greg Ostertag (obviously misspelt) stole the ball at the opposite end, ran it back while doing a behind-the-back switch dribble and dunked it. The house went pretty crazy as Greg was a center
I was at that game...it was recorded to be the loudest ever...how it isn't on this list is beyond me. The fieldhouse felt like there was an earthquake happening.
I watched that game, It's 1 of 2 games where I was just way into the game ever, the other game was the CBS Sports Classic where Kentucky and UNC played in the High scoring Regulation. I wanted oklahoma to win, but Both those teams showed heart, and I'm not even an Oklahoma fan, that game was electric and one of my fav games to watch live.
I used to work in the Studio below Hash, that game the entire restaurant stopped and watched the game. No orders were placed, no food was cooked. It was awesome!
By far the best venue in college basketball. So much talent in this program. Pierce going unconscious was crazy. I will ALWAYS remember the last Missouri game and that block LOL😂😂😂😂😂😂That Texas game and that run, outstanding. Kansas just absolutely destroyed Kentucky that game. Any time Kansas comes back on West Virginia is hilarious😂😂😂😂😂😂I’ve seen four of those comebacks.
The only thing I will add to my previous post is that all of the dates in this video were after the 1960's, 1970's and 80's, which was a 3-decade span of time when KU basketball was among the best programs in the country and had some of the most rabid fans in college basketball history. This era was also prior to all of the renovations that took place within the building. During that time, Allen Fieldhouse had wooden bleachers next to the floor that would fold in and out to accommodate practices and/or games. The Bleachers would be packed with students and alumni and the din they created next to the court was unfathomable. During the late 1960's & 70's Ted Owens was KU's Head Coach and the Jayhawks made several Final-4 appearances. Then in the 1980's came Larry Brown and the Danny Manning era which ended in 1988 with a Division-1 Championship vs Oklahoma at Kemper Arena in Kansas City. Allen Fieldhouse has been an incredibly loud building since day #1.
Missed the loudest event ever. Danny Manning's senior year final home game. Last minute they brought Archie Marshall in with his knee in a brace from 2nd blown out knee. Loudest and most emotional crowd ever.
Any1 remember a Conf game in Jan or early Feb 2006? When KU was dwn like 16pts early 2ndHalf to Oklahoma? KU came back won. I was at that game Super loud

Another that maybe should have been considered was Feb 22, 1984 Vs OK when Calvin Thompson hit a 35 foot jumper to send the game to overtime. Unfortunately, KU went on to lose, but it was loudest moment for which I was present. I was present for only the Vaughn 3-pointer vs Indiana in this list.
