    Nice review of a very nice kit. Thanks for the information.

    Fantastic review. LPL takes a lot of flack over covert instruments, I think his company is a real value add for new pickers.

      I 100% agree. It’s good stuff for what it is and the price. 10 years ago, we didn’t have stuff like this. People complaining don’t know how lucky they are lol. Thanks for watching!

      A lot of the lock picking community doesn't like lpl because how good he is at picking. There are a bunch of people who think he makes it look too easy and it discourages new pickers (hes done more for lock sport than 99.9% of the community) or they think hes a phony. (Which is also laughably false)
      There is another group that thinks the stuff from ci is too expensive and really only for beginners. Idk 30 bucks to get started is what I paid for a garbage set of picks and the Genesis set is about that and its decent quality. But god forbid someone try to make the hobby accessible for the past decade and make some money while doing it ig.

      @@robdubentnah, I’m poor and unsuccessful and from my research CI has excellent quality, excellent QC, and excellent prices. Especially for beginners that have light pockets or don’t want to make a huge investment in a hobby they aren’t sure they’ll enjoy.

      @sandman_locksport  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I was told so much conflicting information leading up to this video that basically I was lied to from multiple sources lol. But at the end of the day, it’s a good quality block. It was still made in China, but it was refined, assembled, and finished in California. It’s a good lock.

    There are current sales now that have been up for a while, just not on this. I like how it uses known cores common to locksport rather than just generic cores. Would be nice if he offered a discount on the training lock if purchased at the same time as this. One may pay $120 but then another $50 seems steep as it is almost half the price of this. Have you used his square traveler hook and can compare it to the standard round model? I have one of both but not much to use them on.

    • @sandman_locksport
      @sandman_locksport  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching, I haven't used the square traveler yet. I have the traveler hook for my companion tool, and the one from the arbiter set. I'll have to try them out and see if theres a difference, but I don't have the round ones yet because I just bought the Sparrows rat hook which is similar. Don't know if I will use it enough to justify purchasing the round one from CI, but I'm happy to have the one from the Arbiter set because it fits in my case and thats more important to me at the moment. But thanks for thinking about that. It's a good question.

    Fantastic review and kudos for owning up to what you saw was a mistake on the CI Practice lock. Why I love watching your channel! Question, what's the name of those pliers that you stated helps straighten out the shims? Per chance would you have a link? Cheers!

    • @sandman_locksport
      @sandman_locksport  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! Those pliers are called "Resurrector Pliers" and they work perfectly on those decoder tools, and it also works on sparrows and peterson decoder shims as well. It's just a good tool for straightening out really thin sheet metal stock. Also, Covert Instruments reached out to me and said their mortise cylinder was actually made in China, but it was assembled, drilled, tapped, and finished by Pacific Lock in California. But I added subtitles to the video to clarify that. Sorry again for the miss information. I'm doing my best. Here is the link to those pliers, they are only $12!

    So if picking a door or core that is in a padlock it can still have the problem of the driver pins dropping out? - it's not just about these not being in a door or lock body? (haven't ever picked yet - but about to order genesis from CI)

    • @sandman_locksport
      @sandman_locksport  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is correct, casein point, American Lock 1100s, you 100% can drop the driver pins and brick the core. It’s no big deal, he just learned to not over rotate on padlocks, and when you’re doing lockouts or trying to pick a lock, that is a use due to the nature of your job, such as locksmithing, or helping out a friend, you learn to hold those pins up as you rotate the cylinder.

I needed to set the record straight and tell people is ok to splurge on great tools. I still spend $400 on a hand tool that only does one job and I haven’t even used it yet. Why wouldn't it be considered locksport? Maybe I'm out of touch, but I remember when locksport first became a named thing, and it was about... Picking locks. This thing is designed to hold locks while you pick them. It comes with some locks which are meant to be picked. Therefore, I refer whoever to my original question.
    I don't own this, or any of CI's stuff, but it looks like it would perform it's intended purpose well. In my opinion, one could make their own version out of wood with nothing more than a drill, some standard drill bits, a hole saw, spade bit, hammer and chisel, a set screw for the rim/mortise cylinder, and the ability to drill straight. However, this is already done for you, might last longer (depending on the wood used), no worries about moisture... And, I suppose if you didn't already have any of those tools, you'd probably spend as much or more than the price of entry on even cheap tools. And you'd still have to buy the locks to populate it if you didn't already have those.
    So, weigh your options, but if you're just starting out, don't have much of anything (or would simply prefer the done-for-you solution), this seems well made, and all considered, not actually too bad of a price. Yes, it's a hefty chunk of change, but the argument could be made that it's an investment. $120 breaks down to $10 a month for a year; could you skip 3 cups of convenience coffee each month for a year? If you're a cigarette smoker, could you smoke 25 fewer cigarettes each month for a year? If you can control yourself in such a fashion, you've got a layaway (or reimbursement) plan.
