In this video, Tommy tests out just how much of an issue front-wheel drive can be if you try to tackle some challenging winter terrain. Will the car manage on its own, or will it need some serious help. You probably know the answer, but check out how the car does anyway!

Love your videos. One thing to consider is not spinning the wheels so much. In my experience with snow driving over the years, you want to keep wheel spin to a minimum to keep snow stuck to the tire as it rotates so it comes back in contact with the snow on the ground. That’s why snow tires have lots of sipes, to hold the snow on the tire. Snow sticks to snow better than rubber sticks to snow. Just my two cents. Thanks for the video!

Tires make a lot of difference. I ran the 3-peak snows on my Honda Si and made a huge difference. Also went to a 17" wheel from the stock 18" wheel for more sidewall and that helped a ton. Those are now on my '23 Integra but I haven't had an opportunity to test them on the new unit. If it gets gnarly around here, I will use my wife's '20 Acura RDX, my '22 Bronco, or the '01 F250 diesel.

Interested to see how actual chains work. Also would like to see it on a 2wd pickup. Had a 91 Chevy with the one wheel peel and it wouldn't go out of my driveway. Installed chains and not only did it go, but I pulled a Ford Ranger out of the ditch and the road was so slick you could barely stand up on it. My dad said in the 1950's that nobody had a 4wd, they just chained up and drove all through the woods.

I like the idea of seeing the difference snow tires and other aids make on a common car. Pretty sure the cables aren't meant to be spun up at high speed by design. The braking distance test in snow is a real eye opener and should be one of your standards for all vehicles in the fleet. Check that before changing tires. 😉

It was interesting seeing the difference the chains made. I had a 2wd ‘07 Element with a 5-speed standard trans. For the winter, I had 4 studded snow tires & it did really well in the snow. If it was AWD, it would have been outstanding.

I've had three 4 wheel drive ravs that I had bought new. I've had other Toyota's besides Ravs too. I ran 400,000 mi on one Rav, they're great cars with great engines if you buy the right years. All three had early transmisson problems however and i never was hard on the transmissions. They're dogs, for power but great gas mileage. Great off road cars. I never got stuck. 4 wheels makes all the difference
Toyota Ravs apparently had a problem with Tranmissions. My last one was a 2009 and it had transmisson noise at 100,000 mi. The 2009 also was a year that they had a cold start noise which was actaually a bad engineered part rattling around atthe top of the engine. After the warranty expired is cost 800,00 to get fixed. My first I think, 1999 Rav, the transnmission had a hard shift. I traded it before it got worse. I had ran about 200,000 mi on it. My 2004 tranny problems started with hard shift and then i finally had to have it rebuilt. I took it 400,000 mi and it was still running strong when I traded it.. Other than that I loved them. They were good and dependable after they fixed my transmissions. You can haul a lot in them with the seats down. All in all I think they're good cars but i don't trust their transmissions. Research common problems before buying certain models. They're good dependable cars mostly but they have some bad models and even bad engines in some models.

Um, well, lol Take away is you have accepted the terminology for what is called "Snow Cables" vs "Chains". Outside of that, proof has once again shown that cables are an awful waste of money. You are frankly lucky they did not snap and wrap around the inside of the wheel well. Pain in the butt to deal with all the way around. FWD is best with studded snow tires and "chains" if need be. Of course, that is true with RWD as well. Although, I was impressed with those plastic things you put on as a temporary solution. IF someone had to make a trip across a mountain pass that required chaining up, that might prove to be an effective, cost worthy alternative to paying for a set of good snow "chains"

I do think those all season tires were really bad, I ran some falken 950s that do have tire blocks for snow and they helped when Texas got hit with snow two years ago. Really good 40-50 mph handling, for a all season m+s ( not a snow tire). Note: we didn't get as much snow as you got in this video.
