Making a Cake Stand On The Lathe

  • I made my daughter a cake stand for Christmas. It was a really fun project to make and I thought it would make an interesting video.
I love woodturning and this project has it all really, some turning on the chuck and some between centres. Mounting the wood took a bit of thinking about and I love that problem solving side of woodwork, gluing on a temporary mounting for the chuck to grip on to meant I didn't need to buy any more equipment for making this.
    Thanks for watching!

Imagine having all those tools and the skills to make intricate furniture to pass down for generations in the family. Like long time. I am so jealous! When I retire I am going to learn woodworking, welding, driving an excavators/tractors and such things. Life would be so interesting.

Ah thank you! My advice would be don't wait though, start now, even if it's only small, you'll never regret learning a trade or new craft.

I agree that ash is underrated. Nice project and thanks for sharing.

Such a lovely wood, and sad what's happening to the Ash trees in the country.

Very beautifully done Kev. You are such a talent! Shame I haven’t got a cake - I could’ve bought one….

More wheat for next year! I think I'd have to have acre down for what you're doing, no way could I miss my cakes all week!

Thank you! It made a great present to give my daughter, I love that they (so far) have asked for so little when it comes to presents.

Very, very nice! Any thoughts on turning it from a single piece?

@willhanley8002 from a single piece you have to contend with a lot of short grain. Unless you glued the blank up before hand. I feel like if it was from one peice you'd have to modify the shape somewhat and they're probably be quite a bit of waste if that makes sense?

Hard to say. I think in the end I sold them for around £50 each, but my business is more set up for garden stuff rather than kitchen, so maybe I wasn't in the best position to sell them. What would it be worth where you are?
