Woodturning - Black Walnut Cake Stand (Brads Workbench Giveaway)

- A trip back to our home town, offered a nice heave glass dome for a serving dish. I couldn't help but think of all of the birthday cakes for our daughter in our future. This piece is a composite build of three pieces of black walnut. Two came from the scrap pile, while the main platter is a beautifully figured, colored, and curled piece of private reserve stock. I hope you enjoy :)

What a gorgeous cake stand! Any baker would be proud to display/keep their baked creations in this! I love that you made this with a outside “lip” also. As a baker I have had some accidental losses of pies when I used a cake plate for my pies.The way you designed this it will keep a pie as nicely as a cake.Im sure your lovely wife will appreciate her hard work not sliding off into the floor. Oh yeah...TUNG WAX!

I love seeing how you are able to fix stuff when it doesn't go perfectly. Most of what I turn doesn't go perfectly so it's nice to see the creativity to fix it. Great job, sir! I also love Black Walnut wood , it is my favorite to both turn and carve! I would truly love to try the Tung Wax products myself! I’ve been a user of the other brand of these products for a while now, but being a woodworker of more than just a few years, I well know the value of Tung Oil products. The thought of it being in a wax just sounds right! Keep em coming and kiss that baby! ( I’ve been Blessed to have 2 daughters and 4 granddaughters!) Enjoy them while you can, because time really flies as they grow!

Walnut is one of my favorites for the finished product. Hate how dirty it is to turn. It also causes me to have a rash for a few days, especially when there is bark that I have to turn off. Your cake stand is BE-U-TI-FUL!!! Hard to believe that abrasive paste and Brad’s Tung Wax can give that gorgeous finish. Thanks for sharing this with us.

That's a nice piece. The glass topper is dull purpose as a pastry display and punch bowl. Nice tung wax.

Beautiful walnut cake stand .. We had a glass one just like that (topper) until the nightmare kitten from Hell knocked it off the TOP cabinet .. crashed into the floor .. shattering .. Maybe if I had put Tung Wax on the counter top, she would have been unable to get that high ... nah, she is a determined beast ..

Nice piece, black walnut is such a beautiful wood. I made a similar cake stand for my wife in much the same way last year but it didn't turn out anywhere near as nicely as this one did.
Nice recovery! I like to use epoxy when gluing end grain. In the end the walnut is awesome.

great piece Todd you will have to eat the cake quickly so it does not cover the grain now that you have put that Tung Wax on. Just one qusestion is the Tung Wax food safe.
