  • I finally have decided to branch out from the standard bowl turning & start showing some of the other items that I make. I have a background in cooking & when I started Carolina Grain Co., I wanted to bring that love for cooking into my woodworking. Most of my work is utilitarian items & pieces you would use in the kitchen. It is a way for me to combine my love for food & woodworking. For this upload, I wanted to show one of my more favorite pieces to make, a walnut cake pedestal with the added glass dome. I actually found this dome at a local church yard sale and have had it tucked under the workbench for months now waiting for the right time. Finally decided two weeks ago that this pedestal video was that time! However, I think the walnut is the star of the show here. This pedestal came out a lot nicer than I anticipated & it is one that I am definitely proud of. With this video being something out of my norm & comfort, It ended up being the most tedious & hardest video I have made so far which also lead to it being the longest. Because of this however, I am looking forward to future uploads & showing more of why I started Carolina Grain Co. and the items that I am truly passionate about. Wonderful cake stand. I am surprised you didn't have a cake on it to make us all drool. 😉 Have an awesome day.

    Beautiful. I'm just starting to create a cake stand in walnut also. The platter portion have seen created with 8 wedges glued together...like a segmented bowl but this platter will have zero end grain. purchased the dome. Going to start the spindle piece this week.

    What advice do you have for making cake stands? More specifically, what dimensions or proportions do you suggest for base to plate and pedestal length?

    • @andrewmccarn
      @andrewmccarn  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I'll be honest, I usually just wing it when I make them lol I typically like my cake stands around 12" - 14", keep them around 4"- 6" tall and keep the base around 50%-75% of the diameter to the top. These are the guidelines I stick to when I make them for the most part but will make changes as I go if I feel its too tall, wide, etc.

    Nice piece! I have been wanting to turn some cake stands. I couldn’t tell from your video, how did you hold the platter to your chuck when you first put it on the lathe?

    • @andrewmccarn
      @andrewmccarn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! & I use a 1" jaw on my old midi chuck to old it. I hate changing out jaws so I just keep those on them and use a spindle adapter lol I just drill a 1 1/8 hole on all pieces & turn the tenon to fit.

    Did you glue all 3 pieces together or do they intentionally come apart? Beautiful cake stand!!

    • @andrewmccarn
      @andrewmccarn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! All three of these pieces were glued together.
