it doesnt work that way bcz that would create uncertainty for his title... when oda exclusively reveals that "mihawk sits alone at the top as the WSS" theres no uncertainty, when oda says that "he travels all across the world trying to find worthy opponents, he beat everyone until there was none left"
he visited shanks and he reveals that he doesnt see him as a worth opponent and now there are no more worthy challengers SHANKS included, he traveled to visit shanks just to reveal that shanks isnt worthy.... mihawk wants travels all across the world according to author to find worthy opponents, he visits shanks and he reveals that he doesnt see him as a worthy challenger, mihawk is also confirmed to gauge someones power level nearly accurately and we even saw that during baratie when he said to zoro "if u were a prominent swordsman you would be able to understand that i am far stronger"

My favorite theory about that is not only did he train Zoro but he also trained Luffy during Marinefold. A lot of people think Katakuri helped Luffy learn to see the future but actually the first time Luffy sees the future (his arm getting cut off) is against Mihawk. Mihawk seemed to be testing him to an extent and it turns out Mihawk probably has the strongest observation haki in the entire series, as seen when he was listening in to the Reverie meeting from his own castle and was able to warn Perona it'd be better if she left (which we later learned was because they abolished the Warlords in that very meeting)

I can agree and I get the overall message of the story then to sacrifice for others/those you care about. But if true then whether you see Mihawk as taking the wrong path. His path is just as strong if not stronger, most people would give up their dreams and fall into line to stay with the group/friends/family/crew.
Few would have the self confidence and perseverance to be alone and follow their dream/s for some/most people like luffy they would rather die then be alone or even quiet, while some enjoy solitude more than others, being alone after being on a crew would hurt and be lonely.
Brooke at least lost his crew and then found a new one Mihawk's crew is still alive but can't rejoin them due to principles, Nami/Ussop/Robin/and Sanji almost all went this route, and Zoro chose not too.

    • @NickyNugs
      @NickyNugs ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@thewillofdreams6921 while that is somewhat true, the way the story is going. It would prove Zoro really chose the correct path since he’s supposed to surpass Mihawk. Sometimes true strength doesn’t come from your physical power, especially in One Piece.
Zoro’s will is so strong that he cast his dream to the side for a time, bowed his head to the man he wants to defeat. In order to serve his captain.
So I’d say yes, if this was the case Mihawk’s path still lead him to the crazy strength he has today. But at what cost? Especially when Zoro would be taking the same journey he could/should have and still reaches the same point.
Although I believe if this theory does end up being true, the dynamic between shanks and Mihawk is a bit different since they’re both swordsman. Either way I love it and hope it’s true

    • @thewillofdreams6921
      @thewillofdreams6921 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That is the truth I was talking about all human beings choose what is easiest or what we believe is more important to us.
Zoro is not really giving up his dream to ask for mihawks help. Zoro is both putting luffys dream on equal or greater level than his own, but he is no way breaking his original dream/promise, he is simultaneously doing the best thing to achieve both dreams. The best way to get stronger and beat mihawk is to be trained by him and protect luffy/luffys dream.
Here's my point about Mihawks possible choice to leave his crew, any other character especially a strawhat would choose death over loosing his crew/friends, doing that would be to tough for them, they are not strong enough to live alone. Mihawk while possibly making a wrong choice, that is his path the tougher path of being alone, this is what I meant by that.

So far we have only seen two pirate crews with dual captains. Dorry+Brogy, who just like Shanks are inspired by norse mythology and are literally allies in the story, and Caribou+Coribou, who share the same X design on their shirts as Mihawk's sword, necklace, and general aesthetic.

An interesting note is that we pretty much already know the result of their battle:
Since we dont only know Mihawk is the strongest swordsman, title that he could have gained later after they stopped dueling; we actually know marines, for some reason, *know* that Mihawk is SPECIFICALLY a better swordsman than Shanks, particularly him, and the only way to know that is a duel. The better swordsman is decided on who wins the duel we know this since chapter 50.
Ah, btw, Shanks gaining fame because of dueling Mihawk is an official statement, not fanfic. Mihawk was already famous before Roger died thats also official right now at least. And therefor Shanks who was just a little dude in Roger's crew gaining fame from dueling Mihawk makes total sense.

Great video. I loved the first one and I’m glad you’re bringing it back. The fact that Mihawk even joined Cross Guild goes with this idea. Zoro likely changed Mihawk - and spending time with Perona I’m sure also helped. After spending time with them it’s possible he felt comfortable enough to join an alliance. I don’t think Mihawk would just betray the alliance out of nowhere though. Like Zoro, he seems to be committed to whatever path he chooses. The alliance is also pretty new, like it just happened. We need to spend time understanding cross guild and letting their team up breath before there would be any shake up. Considering it’s possibly first third of the end of the series, I don’t think there is a lot of time to break it up. If this theory were to happen, I think it would have to happen in the final act of the series.

And I agree with you about it being too early to shake things up, but the hypothetical Davy Back fight could play out in a way where Mihawk is swapped to the Red Hair crew only temporarily before somehow being won back by the other side. Multiple rounds in the davy back fight could mean multiple wagers and mixups. 🤔 Just a fun idea to think about even beyond Mihawk

When you talked about how Luffy and Zoro parallel Shanks and Mihawk, something came to mind. Nami and Buggy have this same connection.
    - Buggy is one of the few pirates to be associated with maps at all in this series.
    - Buggy's stated goal is to collect every treasure in the East Blue
    - Buggy STEALS credit from other pirates. Nami was a thief that stole from pirates.
    - Nami and Buggy are both easily the weakest out of their trio.
    - Both Nami and Buggy had a strong initial reaction against joining Luffy or Shank's crew, for very different reasons.
    - In the manga, Nami is first introduced in the same arc as Buggy, even if she doesn't join up till Arlong.
I know its not really relevant to the rest of the theory, but its still interesting, I think. Thanks for giving me new insight on the characters.

For me, Mihawk is alone because he is a swordsman first before he is a pirate, whereas Shanks is a pirate first before he is a swordsman. For Mihawk to be the WSS he should travel all around the world to challenge every swordsman that pops up all around and beat them to prove he is the strongest. That is why I think this is the reason why there's no WSS in the previous era, cause no one wanted to do that alone. Cause let's face it, no one wants to travel the world alone, and no one would want to join you to just challenge someone. Everyone would want to be in a crew and gather treasures and live the life not going from coast to coast to fulfill ones dream. And that is the reason Mihawk had to do that to fulfill his goal. And Zoro is lucky enough to not have to do that and just challenge the current holder for the title when he's ready. Maybe the last WSS was Ryuma and the title died with him cause nobody beat him, then after that no one has the motivation to put in the workload of traveling the world alone. Mihawk couldn't been with Shanks and pirating cause he had to be dueling swordsman not fighting pirates to claim the title. Zoro could do that because there is a title holder.

Shanks losing his arm for luffy may have been the catalyst for Mihawk leaving the red hair pirates.

Lucky Roux is a Cook, and he's also the one who originally acquired the Gomu Gomu no Mi from an enemy ship for Shanks. He's definitely one of the strongest crewmembers, being said to be a main combatant for the crew. The top 3 is definitely: Beckmann as #1, and either Yasopp or Lucky coming in #2 with the weaker of the two coming in 3rd place. Since Lucky Roux is a cook I see him fighting Sanji.
      Red Hair Pirates strength:
      1. Shanks
      2. Benn Beckmann
      3. Yasopp / Lucky Roux
      4. Yasopp / Lucky Roux
And the rest of the crew probably comes after these 4 in strength imo. I think Jinbe would fight either Building Snake or Gab, because they're big guys. Usopp gonna get a powerup in Elbaf and that's how he can surpass Yasopp. There's no proof that they will fight, but Usopp definitely needs atleast one sniper fight. The whole theory is hinged on the assumption that Mihawk needs to have been a part of some pirate crew, in order to get strong enough to then go solo. IMO there is no evidence for this at all.
There are literally admiral level guys walking around the world of one piece who were never even pirates, like Fujitora and Greenbull, who were already strong enough to fight at that level, before they got drafted into the Navy.
Oden was a solo one man army from a young age, strong enough to clash with Whitebeard, before he even knew what pirates were.
The legendary Ryuuma was just a swordsman from Wano.
Kaido was a child when he attacked Marines just to eat, and then break himself out, and was just used by his country like a tool.
Most likely Mihawk is just another freak of nature. No reason he couldn't have been doing what Kaido was doing, and just attacking Marines and getting away with it. If Oden set out on a boat by himself, how many people are stopping him? Makes sense to assume that the man known as the greatest swordsman would have even more natural talent/strength.
All these theories are interesting, but just seem like mental gymnastics to somehow put Shanks over Mihawk, when the most obvious answer is right in the story and the databooks. They used to duel, Shanks lost his arm, Mihawk lost interest. He's the strongest swordsman, Shanks isn't.
It's almost like people start with 'Shanks HAS to be stronger, so let's come up with a theory that somehow makes this plausible'. Simple answer: Mihawk is the stronger fighter of the 2, Shanks is the better pirate.
One thing people bring up is Shanks/Luffy, and Mihawk/Zoro parallels, but Zoro's rival being stronger than Shanks doesn't undermine Luffy, because Shanks is not the final antagonist, most likely Blackbeard, or Imu is. Zoro surpassing both Shanks and Mihawk doesn't undermine Luffy's strength, because ultimately he will have to face Blackbeard, or maybe even Akainu to avenge Ace

Fujitora and Greenbull haven’t had their backstories revealed yet.
Oden got one-shot by Roger and he got beat by Whitebeard in a handful of attacks.
Ryuma never ventured into the grand line which was a key point to this video. Without a crew, would Ryuma even be able to navigate a ship or treat his own wounds? No info given about Ryuma indicates this.
Kaido broke out of navy ships but Luffy was breaking out of navy bases in the first couple chapters. Oda never stated Kaido was yonko level from day one. For all you know, it could have been Axe Hand Morgan level ships.
The only way Mihawk could have been a one-crew man from the start is with incredible luck. Even to this day, if something comes up that is outside of swordsmanship, Mihawk would have to defer to someone else.

I don't think Shanks was ever that strong to begin with, he's mostly smart like Law, not a fighting meathead like Luffy or Kid. I think when he met Kaido before marineford he didn't stop him by force like most think, I don't think he could (unless he has some ancient weapon or smth).
At this point, Luffy defeating Kaido already puts him above Shanks if we do proper powerscaling.

@@Oats95 He lost to the 2 strongest characters in the show, so what? Whitebeard told his crewmates to stand back, because he was the only one who could handle Oden, that tells you everything you need to know. Oden was one of the strongest men in the world before he even set foot off his island. You're talking like it's some wild idea for a man to sail solo, when people are literally doing that in real life. You think Mihawk couldn't do some first aid on himself if he had to? Of course Kaido wasn't born with the strength of a Yonko, nobody ever said that... What I said was Kaido even as a kid could survive by himself and do whatever he wanted without a crew, so why wouldn't the most gifted swordsman. We don't need to know Fujitora and Greenbulls backstories, that's completely irrelevant to the argument, what we know is they are strong as fuck and they were obviously never pirates, so you don't need to be on a pirate crew to be strong, that's the argument.

As a guy who grew up in the 70s and 80s I was mostly outside with all the other kids of our era. This led to interaction, as well as not a small amount of bulkying when you are the smallest kud in your school, which I was. Even the girls were bigger than me.
I had a frenemy, Kevin O., we hung out all the time but it took me years to realize that Kevin only wanted me there to make himself feel bigger.
    That hurt A LOT.
Eventually things occurred that I'm both proud about and embarrassed by, but, by overcoming my rival I took a step...
And 30 years later, I see it was the first step on my road to personal strength and security.
I really don't know who I would be without the lessons I learned from my "friendship" and ultimate triumph over him.
I think about Kevin once in a while but I'm generally having too much fun in my old age with my soul mate and biggest supporter, my wife Jamie.

Was it the right choice, or did he miss out on something when he cut himself off from a crew? A thought to entertain him after years of boredom. In the world of One Piece the answer is kinda obvious. Zoro's going to take the title because friendship. Presented to be far more entertaining than that sentence would make it seem I'm sure.

MiHawk isn’t weak for pursuing his own dream. His dream simply ends with him being alone…
This has always been a recurring theme in stories about people who always want to be the best, the strongest, the fastest, the richest. They are HYPER competitive- living for nothing but the competition- and that single-minded competitiveness tends to push away the people around you till your alone. As they say…the fastest runner runs alone.
Me, personally, I always look for subtext and so I wonder… A person with such a strong will like Zoro. Did he really give up on his dream or did he realize his ACTUAL dream? Zoro stared that his goal was to be the best swordsman, but I don’t think that’s what he really wanted or he would have NEVER given up on it. Zoro’s will might be something as simple as serving a greater cause- which he os willing to die for. It’s what actual samurai’s do. And his devotion to the sword…a sword is nothing in and of itself. It is a tool that serves the wielder.
Mihawk might be sad about the turn out, but he would do it again. Because that’s how strong HIS will is and thar’s the path he chose, for better or worse.

I'm going back and watching/commenting on old vids, and I gotta say: for the Beckman/Sanji comparison, as an insane story crafter myself inspired by Oda, Andrew Hussie, and Archie Sonic, that is EXACTLY how it works.
You come up with ideas and you like them a ton and push them to the front of the story, but as you expand the world, some ideas stop working or get replaced, but the ones you like remain and just get stuck elsewhere. It makes a lot of sense that original Sanji from RD would be split in half, traits now shared and split between two new characters, and turned into a rivalry for later in the story, allowing it to have tons of room to breathe and get a proper spotlight because the original idea was beloved so much.
All that is to say yeah, I agree that the Sanji-Beckman connection is very strong.

    - 18:12 In the Ace Novels, it tells us that Shanks gained his initial fame from duels with Mihawk, so your first rebuttal is immediately null and void
    - 19:01 It’s not important to sail the seas alone, Mihawk in his introduction told Zoro the East Blue is the weakest of the 4 seas, this implies Mihawk is a well-traversed man who’s been everywhere seeking challenges. He is also stated in his vivrecard that he trained tremendously and challenged more and more powerful foes. This also implies that he sailed the Grand Line as well as the new world (things he is currently doing). To assume he can’t because “there’s no way” isn’t a strong argument

      1. The point was moreso to disprove that lower fame or higher age than your captain is a prerequisite to join a crew, which that detail doesn't seem to disprove. That detail is interesting however, and does make it more difficult to timeline but not impossible. Might not have nailed every detail on the order of events, but hopefully my video is at least a good jumping off point.
      2. This doesn't really make sense to me as a counter argument. The burden is on you, not me, to prove that someone can climb to the top of the pirate world in the grand line completely alone without any crew or help whatsover. There is no example of this anywhere in the story, and I'm following the examples set by the greatest pirates ever stated to live. I doubt Mihawk is a more seasoned warrior than all of them. The argument is based on precedent and context, which I think is as strong of an argument as you can get in an ongoing fictional story.

I finally got a good explanation about shanks giving up his arm. Curious to know how Oda draws it, but I gotta say this makes the most sense. When hawk eye gave shanks the Luffy poster pre time skip how did he know how to find Shanks? Especially if he is so elusive. He has to have a vivre card. Why would he have a vivre card? these questions I asked my self, and this theory explains it in a way that ties everything together.

I think Mihawk trained Shanks to beat him. There’s got to be a reason why Shanks is known for killing Future Sight. I think they had their fight and Shanks almost won. And then he lost an arm. So Mihawk never got to have a final match where he would be beaten,
I think this mostly because I like the idea of Shanks just begging Mihawk for matches and Mihawk being grumpy about it. Before relenting.
I also think they fought after Shanks lost an arm. After all, Shanks did say ‘are you here to ask for a fight?’ Feels like they’ve had that exchange a few times since Shanks lost his arm?
Probably ended up with them both drinking. Exactly like thr first time we saw them.

Remember that Jimbei will need a potential opponent in this situation and I think a grand Sumo style battle with Lucky Roux works wonderfully for the two of them.

I think Mihawk and Shanks are basically Equal , They are like Roger & Whitebeard , I think neither of them have defeated eachother.
Now you would think then that would mean Mihawks title is fake and not complete , Here's why I say that's false and how I think Mihawk became the WSS after ending his rivarly with Shanks.
Mihawk achieved a Black blade. Shanks hasn't, after their rivarly ended Mihawk achieved the pinnacle and " secret " of swordsmanship , Being the " Red Haired Emperors Rival , Drawn with him and achieving a Black Blade when the Emperor hasn't , That's what made Mihawk the World's Strongest Swordsman , People acknowledged that Mihawk achieved greater Swordsmanship than Shanks because of the Black blade. This is also why the marines said Mihawk has Greater sword skill than even the Red Haired Emepror , This also means that the only Swordsman capable of fighting Mihawk to the death is actually only Shanks , The marines never said Big Mom , Or Rayleigh , They were basically saying Mihawk and Shanks are the two strongest swordsmen in the world.

I interpreted mihawks anger as offence that Shanks didn’t value their rivalry and being the best swordsman above all else, hence why Mihawk seems bored all the time. He seems starved of someone worthy of battling him, going in so far as to train Zoro just to see how much he could grow and to test the theory that wanting to become stronger for someone else’s dream will allow Zoro to surpass him. Mihawk is a fascinating character. Oda has written him so well because it’s all implied, not stated.

Expanding off of the rivalry between Shanks and Mihawk, there was one idea that came to my mind. But first, if you take a look back at when Shanks was at Wano, he was able to cancel out haki. This reveal was pretty huge imo as we don't know any other character in the series that can do such a thing with haki. Now, with Mihawk, he clearly is based on a vampire given his "Dracule"/"Dracula" name, his actual appearance, and also his spooky looking island.
So, what if Mihawk is actually able to absorb haki similar to that of a vampire absorbing your blood aka your life force. This could explain why he considered Shanks his true rival as well. This is because no matter how much haki Shanks used against Mihawk, he would just absorb it all and possibly throw it right back at Shanks. However, no matter how much haki Mihawk absorbs and throws back, Shanks can cancel it out with his own nullifaction abilities. This makes them the perfect rivals since they can have a fair sword fight as true swordsmen with no haki or devil fruits involved. But, with Shanks losing his arm, it would add to why Mihawk lost interest since Shanks wouldn't be able to hold his own against him in an actual sword fight with no haki or devil fruit powers anymore

    • @shimahdah
      @shimahdah ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@SoothingMusic883 It was revealed in his Vivre Card that Shanks is known for being the "Killer of Observation Haki" and I think it's based on the fact that his Conqueror's Haki is just powerful enough to cancel out someone from using their future sight against him. It would have been during the time he scared off Greenbull as well. Even if he didn't use it against Greenbull in Wano, it was already confirmed that Shanks has the ability to cancel out haki anyway

    • @kgar130
      @kgar130 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@shimahdah I really like this and it does give respect to the title "the killer of Observation Haki" but Shanks can only cancel out future sight, or so it says. I read someone commented that this could be why Kaido didn’t use future sight all that much, seeing that there already was a person capable of canceling out future sight. I will say that with Hawkeyes, Mihawk probably uses a lot of wild haki infused techniques and with Shanks canceling the future sight, it only lays credence to how precise Mihawk can strike even without knowing the future; he is raw skill.
