⛵️Instagram / totaljoyrider Before we can look at the gybe we have to look at the correct downwind sailing angles, before we can look at that we need to understand how apparent wind works.
We look at all of that in this video.
Wikipedia description - A jibe (US) or gybe (Britain) is a sailing maneuver whereby a sailing vessel reaching downwind turns its stern through the wind, such that the wind direction changes from one side of the boat to the other. For square-rigged ships, this maneuver is called wearing ship.
In this maneuver, the mainsail will cross the center of the boat while the jib is pulled to the other side of the boat. If a spinnaker is up, its pole will have to be manually moved to the other side, to remain opposite the mainsail. In a dinghy, raising the centerboard can increase the risk of capsizing during what can be a somewhat violent maneuver, although the opposite is true of a dinghy with a flat, planing hull profile: raising the centerboard reduces heeling moment during the maneuver and so reduces the risk of capsize.

Great vídeo!! You are on fire man. 2 videos per day. Thank you for your generosity. I am becoming patreon right now to support your channel. Two questions. No need to uncleat the main? And question two: I learnt in a cat school here in Spain to center the traveler and sheet in almost block to block when steering to jybe. And release it when on the other board.That's to avoid the violent change of side of the main when strong wind. What do you think about this technique? I believe you have more chances to capsize. In anything other than 'survival' conditions you can keep the main and traveller in the same position so that you take max speed into the gybe.
When it's really windy it's a good idea to bring the traveller in to at least the toe-strap and unclear the main so that it will run out when it fills.
Most important in the heavy wind is to go into the gybe with speed.
Thanks again joe! One question ...is this gybe technique the exact same on very strong winds, or is there something else you need to do in the stronger wind conditions?
in stronger wind the technique is the same but there is an increased importance in gybing after a gust and then straightening the rudders as soon as the boom comes across - high wind gybing video coming soon!
Just to clarify for myself and possibly for others: the 90 degrees of apparent wind guideline comes from wanting to be close to a beam reach, which is the fastest point of sail downwind (other than w/ a spinnaker)? That would effectively follow the same sort of "sail 45 degrees off the wind" rule as when we go upwind for most boats/sails

Thanks for those links. To put a different reason for it - that 90 apparent is the furthest downwind that you can go maintaining a flow of air over both sides of the sails.
Hi thank u 4 this great video ! General question : as right handed I feel less secure with the tillerextension over my right shoulder and feel restrictef to deal with the main sheet , so I leave the tillerextension on my side when I need my right hand more intensivly (no problem on the left side) your toughts?
It's quite unorthodox. It's recommended that unless you have a physical impairment you should have the tiller on your back shoulder - so opposite on both tacks.

One questions from my side regarding the broad reach. How should i set the main sheet?
While I have the travellor wide out (~75%), the tail tales tell me to trim the main sheet, but as I do this, i lose a lot of power.

Yes, when adjusting the mainsheet continue to pay attention to your course - keep those tapes at 90
You should aim to get the lower telltales flying as much as possible.

Ok, I was running the traveler out and then sheeting in too tight. Or I was running to far down wind with the traveler out and the sheet loose. I will try it out this weekend. Thank you for the tips and the video reference!!

Hi there, in strong wind going downwind when you want to gybe, I’ve been told even that you can let the mainsheet eased and to put the traveler in the middle, so as to de power the mainsail and safely pass it on the other side without it going to fast with the risk of generating a probably capsize… then as soon as you are seated on the other side you keep watching the direction in which you are going and the ease all the traveler as to keep it for the broad reach leg

I think it will give you better gust response than VHS, I think you'll do well!
watching all the beginner lessons to get ready for the season and learning/relearning so much.
1. Not much discussion in this video about what to do with the jib during downwind sailing/gybing. Can you comment?
2. Also watched your video on running a line to let the jib manage itself downwind. doesn't look like a great place to tie off on a Getaway, could tie off around the center crossbar but line would exert force on the trampolines, which doesn't seem like a great idea. thoughts?
2. Yes, I see what you mean - if you were to tie the line around the beam it would potentially slip inboard fouling the trampoline.
There's not a clear solution apart from tieing a knot like a rolling hitch which is less likely to slip.
I'd only worry about using this system if you were sailing solo - if the wind was light you can very easily manage the jib without it.
1. On a boat like the Getaway - best to fly the jib across as you gybe - I think this will be best explained in the next Q+A (postponed until Saturday this week)
@@JoyriderTV got it thanks, with respect to question 1, where do you set the jib while sailing down wind (say on a broad reach). do you tweak and adjust jib sheeting on downwind or set and forget, and just sail to the bridle telltales?
@@jamesworks5598 the ideal is to adjust frequently - that works if you're sailing with a crew.
You gauge where to set it by watching the telltales - if the inside one lifts pull it in - if the outside one lifts, let it out.

I tried this, but as soon as I face the back of the boat, everything falls apart. My brain shorts out and I end up turning the wrong way. Pretty laughable.
maybe try practicing on land to get more familiar.
