Regarding that first video, I had a Petsmart employee wrestle with three Kuhli Loaches for 5+ minutes, tore up the decorations, muddied up the substrate and water, at one point pinned one to the wall with the net to grab it.. It took a week for those loaches to calm down in my tank.

I got mollies from petco, it took them 5 minutes to catch the poor things and they never settled down again. Every time they even saw the net through the glass, they hid, or darted around. Had one jump out of the tank while i was trying to scoop plant trimmings bc it thought i was going for it.

Our local Pet Smart is actually really good. I went to get Angelfish last week, our local Mom and Pop live fish store had nothing. I went to Pet Smart, they had several very healthy looking, medium-sized Black Lace Angelfish for a reasonable price. The staff member who helped me was fantastic. She grilled me about my tank, size, stocking, filtration etc before she would catch them. Just before I chose mine, she refused to sell fish to someone who had a tank that was too small for the adult size of the fish they wanted. 10/10!

Once I got a couple endler hybrids at petsmart. The girl who helped me was a high schooler and she caught a few, but also caught a white cloud mountain minnow. When I asked to swap it for another endler things got bad. When she was trying to get it out of the little container she dropped an endler and LITERALLY CUT IT IN HALF WITH HER LONG ACRYLIC NAILS trying to pick it back up. She even dropped the two halves back in the tank.
I feel for her, because it wasn’t like she was being callous or cruel. She was just a kid who clearly knew she’d messed up and was scared so she was trying to act like nothing happened. She just didn’t know what else to do.
Another one of the fish she netted died in my car on the way home-I happened to look over at them at a stoplight just in time to see one go belly up. I still have one of that batch, though! Unsurprisingly after surviving that meat grinder he is tough as nails and will probably live forever.

Where I live we have these connected stored called “That fish place” and “That pet place” and they’re amazing. When we went to get fish, the worker easily caught them, put them in a seperate bag, then in another one so that the fish couldn’t get in the corners. 10/10
Edit: they also put more air in the bag so that it’s puffy! Also, when they’re monitoring a certain tank’s health, they put a cover over it to lower stress, and if a fish will get really big, they post a note on the tank.

I actually felt sorry for the shopkeeper, cause I asked for the bird who kept outsmarting her.

@@FishForThought Most houseplants are quite low maintenance in my opinion ^^ it's the substrate that makes things complicated/ easy, at least for me. I usually use leca or Pon because it's so much easier to just fill up a reservoir compared to managing soil. Especially because a lot of soil that plants come in isn't suited to the plants needs and semi Hydro is suited for so many plants.

Years ago I went to Petsmart to buy a Pictus Cat. Surprisingly there was 2 healthy specimens and I asked for the bigger one. The employee couldn’t catch the fish for 5 minutes and when he did he pinned the catfish by 1 of its whiskers to get him. What makes matters worse was that ofc the catfish doesn’t like to be handled with nets and it’s spines we’re all cought up in the net followed with another minute of struggling. The guy couldn’t get the net off and ended up calling another employee to get scissors to cut off the whisker. Thankfully the other employee told him to just cut the net stuck to the fish. Went home with a petrified catfish with netting stuck to its face. Last time I bought from Petsmart

Then while transferring the fish to the plastic box one of them fell ON THE GROUND. So, she suspended the net above the tank (fish were out of water for around 5 mins while she was picking the rummy up) after they got bagged they were all like half dead so i didn't end up buying them. Also, I had a PetSmart employee in the middle of a slushy salty Minnesota winter, take the fake decorations out of the tank, set them on the dirty floor, catch the fish, bag em up, then proceeded to put the decorations from the floor directly back into the tank… 😅 they still work there and I have seen their fish keeping/catching skills improve though so we all gotta start somewhere.

Where I did bought my fish they don’t put in those kind of decorations, they provide hiding if the breed needed but still they are so gentle with them to reduce stress as low as possible. And I write down the breeds and he asked what kind I had and how they would interact or aren’t a good match with my white Beta. He’s the main character in my tank. I thought my tank was to small but he has plants, rocks, hiding places and still he’s silly. Making foam nests and coming up for feeds. I only had a dark algae and got the treatment for it and he told me to tackle that first before adding new fish. Now it’s over with the algae but will wait a few extra weeks. And my plants went crazy! Have to trim out some. I’m happy to finally have someone that helped me with knowledge without willing to sell. It’s the stores policy, due the fact some stores just sell to sell and getting bad reviews or selling more fish.

Now I know why people are always impressed by how I catch fish at my work. They're probably traumatized from watching PetSmart employees 😂
And as someone who's pretty decent at catching fish, you can use one net for some things (guppies will practically swim right in I swear), but 2 nets is usually better if you're catching out of a tank bigger than 10g. I usually use one large net to spook all the fish into going in one direction, and then a smaller net to snag the fish a customer wants out of the group. Some fish are a bit different, and you get used to different behaviors over time.

I’m the aquatic specialist at my Petshmo location and I’ve gotten netting action down to a TEA. And it’s funny and kinda sad to see my coworkers and other employees from other stores struggle and go for minutes trying to catch only 1 fish. Don’t get my wrong some fish are a PAIN to catch like some loaches, Chinese/siamese algae eaters, some African cichlids, but I never take more than a minute to catch a fish. I was at a different petshmo location and was talking to the employee and he was struggling to catch me 5 red&blue Colombian tetras, and I already was making conversation saying I’m the A.S. At my store and if he’d like me to catch them and he was like nah nah I got it. And took him like 12 minutes to catch them all💀 moving all the decor and stressing every fish in the whole system🤦‍♂️😭

snail parasites are intermitant in snails and require moving to the next species of their type (parasites are indeed species specific) by being consumed. Example, lung worm in dogs requires the dog to consume a type of snail. The majority of parasites start in an insect and only after consuming do they infect the inteded host. A cat eats a flea or certain types of flies, it gets tape worm. So most of these parasites don't infect humans or don't live long if they do becuase they are too species specific, occassionally one does like round worms for example. Occasionally a parasite will migraite in a species it can't survive in and end up in wierd places, the body walls it off and this is what ends up causing damage. Strange places are tissue, eyes, brain and such. Be sure to always cook your pork well, pin worms and tape worms migraite into to pig tissue becuase it doesn't know where else to go as it's not intended for pig species but they get exposed to it so much that this is what is seen happening and the main reason on the advisory to never eat undercooked pork.

For khuli loaches, the trick is to actually have hiding spots in the tank like coconuts, and a bare bottom. And when it's time to fish some out just quickly lift up the hide and give it a big yeet with a large net before they know it.
You cannot fight these guys on equal terms and if you try to tire them out you'll kill them. Taking them by surprise is the only way!

I absolutely love getting fish for customers. The secret for fast and sneaky fish is to chase them into a specimen cup with a net 😎 As much as I hate it, I will say that since my district removed the substrate from our fw tanks, getting bottom feeders has become so much easier. I still struggle with pictus catfish (long barbells are too long) and Raphael catfish (they lock in place), so maybe im not all that great lol

I use a big net to catch all of the fish because the small net is so terrible lmao. I use a silk net too, to protect their fins. I'm not sure if this is the right way to do it, but if I'm having trouble catching the fish, I just take their stuff out and set it aside (or I gently move it to one side of the tank so I can corral them to the open side.) we don't have gravel in our tanks (no idea why). If it's been a busy day, I feel bad so I'll do a small water change and give them some stress coat. Everyone else just goes in gung ho, destroys the set up and it kills the fish. Anyway uhhh I love your videos and they are reigniting my passion for fishkeeping haha. keep it up LOL

QOTW: medaka (aka Japanese rice fish). I've been interested in aquaponics for a while for growing food, but most setups I've seen look like a PVC pipe dystopia. somehow that led into aqua scaping, vivariums and paludariums ...so I still want an aquaponic system in the garden, but now I also want something that'll look good I can see from my desk (but not take up the entire room) so I got into looking at some smaller fish, was thinking of some minnows and shrimp, maybe a male betta but what I've read so far seems 50/50 whether or not the betta will attack the other fish - more research needed. somewhere along the way I came across a YT video by RyoWatanabee talking about rice fish - so now I want those too: got a few other (non-fish) projects going on atm, so happy to be in research mode for now - something this channel esp the good/bad tank reviews have helped a clueless beginner like me with.

Got gifted some Nclass Endlers to breed in the 2 10s and my 5 is a grow up tank. The 2.5 has my ghost shrimp. I just trade my endlers for ISC now so I don't pay for anything for the fishtanks. my planted tank is sparse (i dont have the greenest thumb) but ive just successfully bred rcs' for the first time! the babies were born two weeks earlier than i'd estimated they would be, so i think theyre a little underbaked so to speak, but so far they seem to be thriving against those odds :-)
i unfortunately lost the king betta (affectionally named "fuckass" by my boyfriend, because of his love of uprooting every plant possible in the tank and driving me crazy) that was in the tank before the rcs' but i think i'm happy having a small shrimp army for now

Blacknose dace are actually a species of "riffle dace" (the Rhinichthys genus), specifically. From my understanding, they all tend to be small. They inhabit "riffles", which are those really fast-moving parts in a river where the water is moving down some large rocks.
I honestly only know this because there's a species native to my area in the same genus called the "loach minnow" (don't ask me why it's named that; your guess is as good as mine. It's the only fish in the genus with "loach" in the name instead of "dace"), so I can't really tell you much more than that.
As for the QOTW: Dojo Loach is the first fish to come to mind.
