Tiger barbs really are deceiving! Those beautiful orange stripes make them look perfect for any tank, but their fin-nipping habit can cause quite a bit of chaos. Thanks for the detailed breakdown on managing their aggression-keeping them in larger schools sounds like a great tip!
Those beautiful colors and patterns are aposematic. Konrad Lorenz wrote during the earlier part of the last century that he purchased a group of Tiger Barbs because he wondered why they "looked so poisonous"; in his care, they mobbed larger cichlid fishes so persistently that he was forced to separate them. Unfortunately, most people react to animals on an almost entirely emotional level; "fish so pretty, me buy pretty fish".
I've had two male Bettas. The first one became a territorial, ever flaring jerk when I moved him to a 55 gallon. I got him an 8 gallon and just a few guppy friends and he lived out a happy life. I just got a new Betta and he appears to be doing just fine in a large tank. I love Bettas and it's worth the risk to include them in a community tank as long as you have a plan B
I agree. I love them for community tanks and it’s such a wildcard. But they are such pretty little divas. What’s a environment without one toxic member 💀 😂
Thanks for the video. Very truthful. Personal experience with Gourami, Lamp Eye Tetra. Platys are usually peaceful, but you can get a fin nipper. I have had male Bettas in community tanks and never had them attack other fish - it's always been the other way around with my experience.
I'm so glad this popped up on my feed. I've been a hobbyist for about 4 decades now and I have worked at a couple of local pet shops and I feel this is a really great video for a novice fish keeper. There are so many rumors that circulate , it's nice to have a video that I can link for folks to watch with some facts!
Mine started killing shrimps out of the blue now I feel so sad angry tbh he doesnt chase them or look for them in any way but I ve seen him do it twice in 5 days didnt had any problems before....
Thanks for making this video! Knowing which fish don't play well with others is super helpful. I didn't realize some of these could cause so much trouble in a community tank!
Great video! Loved the humor and the in-depth explanations. Definitely learned a lot about which fish to avoid for my community tank. Thanks for the tips!
If you do want a barb fish and like stripes: The 5-stripe barb (barbus pentazona) does not bite fins, I have them for decades in my tank and they are peaceful little friendly fish, even a bit shy!!
My thoughts on tiger barbs? I agree, give them their own display tank! A nice big school is ideal and looks the best. Luckily, they’re great with plants, not destructive to their surroundings, and their colors compliment most plants, too. They also don’t restrict themselves to only one level of the aquarium, as they swim around together everywhere. It may be controversial or unpopular, but I have always found angelfish (and bettas, gourami, paradisefish, etc) to be best kept singly, as a "focal" or centerpiece fish, rather than socially. Both methods can work, depending on what you’re doing. If you want to breed, groups will obviously work, but you have to be able to periodically separate them to avoid problems. Plus you need to be able to give breeding pairs their own spawning space. But I’ve always enjoyed single cichlids… maybe with smaller, schooling fish that were preferably in the tank FIRST. It’s always better to introduce larger or more boisterous species AFTER the smaller ones have established themselves. Kind of like betta sororities, they can work, but only if done all at once, the same day, all together, so they form their little hierarchy immediately. And don’t acclimate them in the same floating bag! Individuals! 😆 I had a 65-gallon planted dirt tank for a while, with harlequin & emerald-eye rasboras, marbled hatchetfish, neon tetras, kuhli loaches, panda corydoras, clown plecos, and otocinclus. It was pretty damn perfect. Larger tanks with smaller fish always "flow" well. Then one day I just felt like trying out a baby angelfish from PetSmart, and they became my favorite species ever since. He seemed to have no issue living alone. Am I depriving him of mating? I don’t know… but there was never any issue. He was like my little water puppy! 😂 Always waiting for me, for food, always swimming right up, letting me "hold" him and pet him as he swam through my hand in the water. Although now I really try to limit how often my skin touches the water… I was reading about oils, proteins, and soap residues… irs true. It makes up part of that oily sheen on the water’s surface, which a protein skimmer is good for…
Yes the oils can make use your tank - unfortunately protein skimmers only work in saltwater tanks. I love having small fish in large schools in larger tanks. Centerpiece fish can be tough with them because they might eat them unless we are talking about discus. There are so many options with freshwater tanks it’s so easy to build a bunch of tanks 😆
Tiger barbs have always been my favourite fish. I find the best way to keep them in a mixed community is with a community of different barb species, as most barbs are as equally feisty. They all eventually get to know their place in the pecking order then settle down peacefully.
@@AquariumStoreDepot The leopards are still very fast and nippy, I'm planning to give them their own tank. My wife keeps tiger barbs with dwarf mbuna cichlids, which seems to work. So I guess the secret is to keep them with fish even meaner than they are. The tiger barbs are bullied by the male cichlid, so they can't develop much attitude.

Semi aggressive fish are fine in a tank with each other, in the right numbers,.I had 3 tiger barbs with tin foil barbs angel fish. I never had any problems. All semi aggressive fish.
I agree with just about all of these. I would add any danios to that list, they all seem to be way hyperactive and always caused problems in my tanks. Never had nippy serpae tetras, they haven't presented any problems, they spar a lot but never nipped even my angelfish. Buenos Aires tetras were very nippy in my tanks and nibbled plants, they are almost like smaller versions of silver dollars and also super active and disruptive if you like a quiet tank. Gouramis, rainbow sharks, redtailed sharks are all a crap shoot, I've kept gold gouramis, rainbow and redtails that were big babies but others were ferocious. Pearl Gouramis, Honey Gouramis and Thick Lipped Gouramis are a good choice. Just about all barbs will nip, Cherry, Black Ruby and Gold barbs are least likely but still caught them nipping. Good video thanks.
I have red eye tetras in my tank and I’ve never seen them nipping at my other fish they usually school with my Glotetras so maybe they distract the red eyes
I had a Red Tailed Shark that claimed _all_ the hides in the entire tank. They simply wouldn't let my Clown Loaches exist! And he was next to impossible to catch out of a fully planted tank! To be kept with non benthic fish only.
Best alternative for giant danios is Bengal danio . I've 6 of them and they are 5 inches long . They are shimmery , shinny and robust. These fishes always stay at the bottom of the tank , moving constantly in high speed. I've 6 boesemani rainbow fishes , 8 angels and 4 severums, 6 electric blue acara in the same tank along with the Bengal danios . I've no problem at all with agression. Only problem is acaras get to eat less as they are shy and slow . Rainbow fishes and danios move around as a shoal . I recommend others personally to have some Bengal danios with Angels or Severums . That is my own experience.
I had a school of 12 fully grown tiger barbs that I had from 3 years from juveniles. They were in a 55 gl tank with a few rainbows and got along fantastic forever. Until, I think do to mating aggression, I watched them slowly murder each other over a few months. I have one phat B**** left and I am very upset.
I would like to add the fish that is constantly being shown in your video. Black skirt tetra/white skirt tetra aka glofishes. How r u a "schooling" fish yet your territorial? I had a total of 18 in a 55 gallon and one by one they just kept bullying the weaker one until it died then on to the next. I eventually gave up on this species and I'm going to try the danio species.
@ the owner of the shop where we first bought a few shrimp said if it gets bad we can bring some back. He keeps a tank in the back for extra shrimp and donates them to teachers to have in their classrooms. I thought that was nice.
The thing is, the pea puffer teeth growing isnt true. They are one of the few puffers where the teeth arent in need of constant snail consumption. They dont grow like that and dont need to be worn down by their food. Still would keep them in a species only tank tho I agree on that.
Yeah, do i have a chinese algae eater, rosy barbs, Tiger barbs and those green ones that are shaped Like Tiger ones. At first i didint know that barbs cant be with guppies with chinese algae eater in a 9gallon/ 25 liters tank
I kept a male betta with guppies be4 in a big enough tank with hiding spots never had a problem with him if anything he was shy and hid all day never was being picked on he just liked to laze around while the guppies did there thing
Tiger barbs are my number one enemy, now. When i first made my first tank, i research every fish and plant and ended up with a beautiful grown aquascape tank with: 6 sunset swordtail 15 neon tetras 1 blue gourami 1 black angel fish 5 panda cory dory. Had these fish for couple of months, and everything was going great. Until i saw tiger barbs at a store, and i got some without researching them. My biggest mistake. At first, i thought there was something wrong with the water when fish started to die. And by the time i found out, it was the tigers. Most of my fish were dead. They single handly killed everything but the panda cory. Dont get barbs in a community tank.
My dwarf gourami was the best fish I ever owned. He was very scared of my Pygmy Corydoras because he did not like them touching him. Unfortunately he got DGD and I am still not over it. Some day I would love to have another but the heart break was really bad. He used to give hugs and high fives and give kisses (more likely bites). Oh I miss him he did great in my 20 long with tetras and Pygmy’s
@AquariumStoreDepot Really? They've only become agressive towards each other when they got older. Unfortunately 2 of 4 I bought turned out to be males. Random, not really dangeorus fights between the two. The beta male died during my absence but I think it's due to the fact I brought some parasites with live food as the other female and 1 galaxy died too at more or less the same time with visible symptoms of parasites. Now I have a couple and the constatly wanna mate.
I know it's quite barbaric but my male betta is in my 10 gal tank with 3 platies and the betta eats the fry I've realized so the population is well controlled. I didn't know he was doing it until I recently saw him do it 😭
Tiger barbs are wonderful fish if you keep them correctly. Less than 5? They will kill each other. More than 10? Beautiful school, perfectly peaceful. No fish is good or bad, obly good or bad keeping.
Been a cichlid keeper and breeder (retired) for 27 years and they are a wonderful addition if you want a MASSIVE tank, for most cichlids. I love that they come in all the colors of some saltwater fish but mostly I love their attitudes!
A couple years ago before I knew anything about fish I introduced about 5 tiger barbs into my community tank because the PetSmart worker told me they would not hurt any of my fish and boy was he wrong those little fuckers nipped at all my fish 🫠
@@AquariumStoreDepot I bet it is, so much misinformation goes on in these big chain pet stores its actually insane especially when I see PetSmart and Petco selling ghost knife fish ik damn well most of the people buying fish their do not have the space for one and I can probably guarantee you that workers would not even have the knowledge to let you know that they will indeed outgrow your average sized tank
12:31 Opaline, three spot, gold and blue gourami are all the same family, and can be very AGERSIVE. even though they look great there not great in a community thank
what would be the best predator that is small enough that it can't eat adult guppies but will eat baby guppies also can't eat shrimp or crabs?? I am making a self sustaining tank so the whole circle of life thing will also eventually get a small turtle very small frogs spring peepers they will have lots of insects and worms and also those little red worms in aquarium live of course also will have waterfall and tank will have the terrarium on top connecting both as one was thinking a batta fish the tank will be 3 feet long 4 feet high 1 feet wide and the terrariom will be 3 feet x 4 feet x 1 feet so pretty big
My common pleco does poop alot 😂😂😂😂 buy I actually enjoy the water changes........when my tank is crystal clear without 1 string of poop....even if it only last fo r 5 minutes 😂😂😂😂😂

have no problem with tiger barbs in community tanks, guppies small loaches ect

Wouldn't Giant Danios be good as dither fish for larger fish??
They can be. However, most larger fish wouldn’t be considered community fish since they can eat smaller fish.
Reality....fishes are not for that small places.
Now we put all of them in one tank and watch their confusion when they don’t know who’s top dog
U mixing up rainbow sharks and red tail black sharks 😢
I ran out of footage and should have labeled the differences.
My dwarf puffers aren't agressive towards other species.
You are pretty fortunate 😊
@AquariumStoreDepot Really? They've only become agressive towards each other when they got older. Unfortunately 2 of 4 I bought turned out to be males. Random, not really dangeorus fights between the two. The beta male died during my absence but I think it's due to the fact I brought some parasites with live food as the other female and 1 galaxy died too at more or less the same time with visible symptoms of parasites. Now I have a couple and the constatly wanna mate.
Almost every gourami are teritorial, from the 2" ones all the way to the 30" ones.
15 or more is safe for me 👍
Okay but hear me out.. what if we put one of every fish out of this list into one tank and see who wins?
Been a cichlid keeper and breeder (retired) for 27 years and they are a wonderful addition if you want a MASSIVE tank, for most cichlids. I love that they come in all the colors of some saltwater fish but mostly I love their attitudes!
A couple years ago before I knew anything about fish I introduced about 5 tiger barbs into my community tank because the PetSmart worker told me they would not hurt any of my fish and boy was he wrong those little fuckers nipped at all my fish 🫠
Your story is literally why I made this video 😅
@@AquariumStoreDepot I bet it is, so much misinformation goes on in these big chain pet stores its actually insane especially when I see PetSmart and Petco selling ghost knife fish ik damn well most of the people buying fish their do not have the space for one and I can probably guarantee you that workers would not even have the knowledge to let you know that they will indeed outgrow your average sized tank

Anabantids hate Anabantids
Yeah.....tiger barbs are a-holes!
They are 😆
Can you keep pea puffers with electric blue rams?
No the puffers will tear them up
@@AquariumStoreDepot aww okay. I thought maybe they would be equally semi aggressive
Good video
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
12:31 Opaline, three spot, gold and blue gourami are all the same family, and can be very AGERSIVE. even though they look great there not great in a community thank
Thank you for adding. Completely agree
what kinds of puffers do you recommend?🐡
Puffers are best for species only - at least the ones mentioned in the video
what would be the best predator that is small enough that it can't eat adult guppies but will eat baby guppies also can't eat shrimp or crabs?? I am making a self sustaining tank so the whole circle of life thing will also eventually get a small turtle very small frogs spring peepers they will have lots of insects and worms and also those little red worms in aquarium live of course also will have waterfall and tank will have the terrarium on top connecting both as one was thinking a batta fish the tank will be 3 feet long 4 feet high 1 feet wide and the terrariom will be 3 feet x 4 feet x 1 feet so pretty big
Anything that will eat baby guppies will eat shrimp
Do bristlenose pleco eat plant?
My common pleco does poop alot 😂😂😂😂 buy I actually enjoy the water changes........when my tank is crystal clear without 1 string of poop....even if it only last fo r 5 minutes 😂😂😂😂😂
