    Thank you. After hearing that a friends Rostock caught fire. I started searching to see if my i3 MSP had thermal runaway protection. I have had ADVi3++ installed for some time now and read that it did but running the "USB TEST" you recommend puts my worries at ease. I've never had a problem but I'm glad I know that it has Thermal Runaway Protection for sure now. Thank you!

    Can't thank you enough for this amazing method, i gave the first one a try with the USB cord and the thermal runaway came up roughly around 1-2 minutes after i set the nozzle to 200 and also the bed to 60, doing each at different tries. glad to know that the bed and nozzle runaway is working. saves me a lot of time instead of doing it the long way around having to unscrew pieces. thank you very much for your help! for those of you wondering too, my printer is the ender 3 pro ordered around april 2021, so it definitely should have the thermal runaway installed and as i double checked it did. the xt60 connectors don't get hot either when printing which is definitely an amazing sign. hopefully no other parts and components catch on fire and i should be good to sleep and let my ender print.

    Great method for beginners to test TRP, I hadn't thought of it. I've always tested it the 'usual' way. Even though I've customised the firmware on all my printers, I never leave anything to chance, and test anyway. Even though I never leave the house with a print in progress. Better safe than sorry.

    Good information. I did not test my CR10S Pro but I noticed with using OctoPrint that Thermal Runaway Protection wasn't on. I used a modified version of Marlin 1.9. I did your USB test on my brand new Ender 3 Pro. On mine, even though it was USB only, my nozzle (apparently) did begin to heat. It went from 20c up top 32c. This possibility wasn't mentioned in the video and I wonder if anyone else had this happen as well. I did set the temp to 200c as suggested and eventually at the 32c point, I did get the Thermal shutdown notice, so I'm happy about that.

    Thank you Bryan for this tutorial too. Very simple, very well explained, very safe. Thumbs up, indeed !
    So far I used a _third_ method... not as neat as yours though... I am proposing it here below, for your comments.
    I use my wife's hairdryer (being totally bald, it's more than 40 years that I don't use any ;-) I put it to "cool" function, so it just blows air, without any heating. I then aim it towards the heater I am testing (either the bed or the extruder). If the thermal runaway protection is working, it will shut off the printer in a matter of seconds.
    I'M NOT SURE OF THE SAFETY IMPLICATIONS OF THIS "THIRD" METHOD - SO DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK !!! One thing, for sure, which is good : it does not require to open any component of the printer. (your thoughts are welcome)

    Thank you for this video. It may be worth noting that when I used the USB power method the nozzle went up to 32C degrees before eventually failing, so , yes, my Ender3-Pro does have thermal runaway protection! I am running Marlin 0.0.6 and I'm still a newbie so I'm going to check the "How to Install Bootloader & Creality Firmware on Ender 3 & Ender 3 Pro" video as I am not sure I have the latest version of the firmware.

    THANK YOU, **SIR**!! Just solved a ton of worry on my part. I have an Ender 3 Pro and ever since the purchase and hearing about this issue, and seeing your video concerning the exact same model, on your channel, I've been a bit more sleepless, and have only made small parts I could watch. But I had seen some blurbage (is that a word?) from Creality saying that later versions of the E3P had this protection in it, and the USB test indicates with a very audible alarm that my model purchased a few weeks ago does indeed have it.
    Saves me a LOT of worry, and can enable me to kick off longer projects and head to bed. Not saying i won't have a fire extinguisher in there, but, in parting, YOU, sir, are the Steely-eyed MISSILE MAN!

    Thanks for the video Bryan, everywhere else suggested the less safe ways you mentioned. I tested my Ender 3 Pro with a usb cord, the temperature reading for the nozzle rose from 23 / 24 when I started up to 37, but then the printer produced the error you showed, accompanied by a very loud beeping. I tried to test the bed heating, but every time I tried to turn the bed temperature up, the printer just reset. Does thermal protection on the nozzle mean there will also be thermal protection on the bed? Thanks

    Great video. Thanks mate. I just upgraded my Ender 3 4.2.2 board to the creality supplied Marlon 2.0.6. It initially had marlin 1.0.1. I was able to power the unit from USB and after a minute or so of trying to hear the hot end it stopped and gave me the error (Heating failed E1, PRINTER HALTED, Please Reset) easy upgrade with no arduino needed, and easy to test thermal runaway. Thanks buddy.

I have an ender 3 with 1.1.6 marlin software and did not know if It shipped with thermal protection turned on. All the videos I found are about flashing your firmware then loading the latest. no one showed how to check and see if it is on.

      @BV3D  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Garry, and thanks! This won't work on _every_ printer. I've found a couple of brands that ignore USB power. For those, you can test by disconnecting the heater cartridge from the main board, so that it can't heat up, and then set a target temperature. But I like using the USB-powered method when possible. 👍

    I don't know if you will see this but here goes. I have a Creality 3 Pro with the 4.2.7 silent board running TH3D 2.11G firmware which I thought had thermal runaway protection. I ran your USB powered thermal runaway test and it didn't detect runaway. I noticed that the nozzle temperature was creeping up at about 2 degrees per minute and wondered if that was enough prevent the protection to kick in? I really enjoy your videos and even did your intro to electronics series even though I have a back ground in electronics, I old (78) and forgetful these days so i figured a reminder wouldn't hurt :)

    My question is how do you troubleshoot what's causing a Thermal Runaway? On my CR-10S I've fully taken apart my E3D V6, rebuilt it per E3D's instructions, and put in a brand new Nozzle. I'm finally able to print, for days I couldn't get it to stay at the Setpoint; however, if shutdown after 10 or 15 minutes...

    I have a request if you would kindly consider....
    My ender is very similarly kitted to yours: 3dfused rails and microswiss hotend. I also have the creality v1.1.5 mobo
    I would love to know what slicer you use and details on the settings.
    For the life of me I cannot get rid of seams when printing circular objects. I have been using cura, but just downloaded prusa slicer to give that a go.

      I’m in the process of revising my printer profiles in PrusaSlicer, to more closely model the settings for my Prusa MK3. This will be geared toward getting good, consistent prints rather than trying to be the fastest (although you can always duplicate the settings and make whatever changes you like). Give me a couple of weeks and I’ll likely have a video out covering it!

      The Z seams will be impossible to eliminate unless you are using VISE mode, Z seams are caused by the printer's need to change the layer lever, about the only thing you could do is randomize them. I'm using CURA.

    Brian, thanks for the Quick/Safe test we all can try. Both of my Ender3's pass the test, the both error out and demand a reset of the printer. The two printer have stock firmware, one is 1.1.6.2 using a 1.1.4 main board, the other is running 1.1.6.2 firmware, and is a 1.1.5 main board, so maybe the 1.1.6.2 firmware is where Creality made the fix?

      Hi Denis, thanks for the info! A little while back I upgraded my Ender 3 Pro to Creality's 1.1.6.1 firmware and it's got Thermal Runaway Protection enabled. I don't know if they had enabled it before that, but I think it was sometime in the latter half of 2019 when they did it. A SainSmart-branded Ender 3 that I got in July of 2019 (and only recently assembled) reports firmware version 1.1.6 (only 3 digits) and does not have it enabled.

    Brian! I have been pulling my hair out for the past 3 hours trying to figure out how to test this with my new SKR mini e3 board. I installed it just today and it froze/crashed shortly after trying to use its USB port. It's working now, but I didn't like how it ramped up the nozzle temp when it crashed. I wanted to make sure thermal runaway was enabled so I can feel comfortable leaving it to print. I was able to use the USB method to confirm that it is indeed working. 4 popular youtubers couldn't help me out but you explained so thoroughly and clearly! I was almost aggravated by how simple it was and how much time I've spent trying to figure this out. You are, by far, one of the most underrated 3D printer content creators on the internet right now. Hi Bryan, i see you answer to many comments, so... i have a question ;)
    yesterday my printer made a loud disturbing sound, showing thermal runaway error. i am happy i was there, sometimes the printer is running 3 days unmonitored in my workshop. now, i f this would happen without me being there and switch it off, would it sound like this until i shut it off (days later)?? is the thermal runaway protection working, and the heating was switched off when the alarm started? it not possible to stay 3 days next to the printer. so, is it maybe possible to setup the printer in a way, that it just switches off itself, or stop without the beeping alarm? because this alarm will disturb other people.
    would rely appreciate, thank you

    • @BV3D

      Hi David, for several months now, the Ender 3 Pro printers have thermal runaway protection enabled. Using this method is a quick way to test whether it's enabled on the printer you have. It's a good idea to test. If you recently bought the printer directly from Creality, it probably has the feature enabled. If you bought it from a third-party reseller, it may be from an older production run. But testing will tell you for sure.
      One thing I've heard is that sometimes, testing using this method can take a while to show a result. Some people have reported that, even when powered by a USB power adapter, their printer was able to heat the nozzle to about 40˚C (which tells me they had a pretty powerful USB power adapter!). A modified version of this test is to turn the printer on and heat the nozzle to 200˚C, and while it's on, connect the USB power adapter. Then, turn the printer's power switch off. The USB power adapter will keep the main board powered up, but it won't be able to maintain a 200˚C temperature on the nozzle. Within about 2 or 3 minutes you should see a Thermal Runaway Error.

I'm wondering if it may be the heating bed thermistor and not the hot end. Any info will be approved.
    Thanks

    How do you troubleshoot an intermittent TRP alarm? I know my machine has TRP but I don't know if it's the board, heater or thermistor causing the issue.

    • @BV3D
      @BV3D  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would try replacing the thermistor first. It's probably the easiest thing to try first. I had a bed thermistor go bad on a Monoprice Maker Select Plus. I think there was a break in the cable. When the bed was at certain positions, the wires no longer made contact and the printer would get upset about the bed temperature. So I replaced that thermistor and it fixed the problem.

    Since I had the Ender 3 V2, the stock firmware (a very old one) didn't have any protection features. After upgrading to JyersUI and running the same bench as I did with the stock FW, I got an error not even after 1 minute of printing saying heating failed. This just shows the reason behind upgrading the firmware. Also, powering the mainboard through a USB while things are connected like the heater block, fans and the heat bed may damage the USB power supply, whether it's a PC or a phone charger, it starts drawing too much current. My biggest fear was and is until this day when I switched my printer off and after a few seconds saw the fans still spinning and the display on. I have put a diode across the VCC pin and the USB still works, as the mainboard steps down the 24V to 5V. What are your Printer fears?

    Hi Great Video. I have a problem wondering if you could solve it?
    I got the thermal runaway error 15 minutes into a print. I tried the print again and around the same time, I get the same error. But before the error I noticed the temperature drop from 240 to 234 slowly. (First time using PETg on ender 3 with Capricorn tubing). I also sometimes get "heater failure please reset" issues when trying to print immediately after finishing another print so I normally just turn the power off then on for new prints. Is this an issue of my thermister so I need a new thermister or is it another issue? Please could someone help?

    Darn it Bryan, looks like I’ll have ro put on my big boy pants and upgrade my Ender3, it is running marlin 1.1.6 but does not have thermal runaway enabled; looks like Creality is reusing firmware release numbers or not putting enough digits on the display - to correct myself, once upgraded the printer shows version 1.1.6.1 and following Bryan's previous video on installing the boot loader and the firmware went really well.

    • @TheDgdimick

      Both my printers are running 1.1.6.2 and passed, so I think Creality is using sub-numbers in their version compiles. Where did you get the firmware(s) from, very interesting to see the 1.1.6 failure, it would be interesting to see the firmware install dates, vers the reported thermal runaway reports.

    Hello I have a question, I recently started having the issue we’re I put my SD card in my printer pick what file I want to print then I wait and once it heats up it just sits there and won’t start the print. Is that a software thing or a problem with my SD? It’s on a regular Ender 3 that I bought last year. I’m just making sure that it’s not like a thermal runaway thing because nothing pops up it don’t freeze I can cancel print it just won’t start printing the beds hot and the nozzle

    So, I just bought a Ender 3 Pro and tried your USB method and it seemed to work though it never went into a reset condition. The nozzle temp did come up a couple of degrees, but no error message. I am not sure if I did not wait long enough or not. I guess this means I don't have thermal runaway enabled. Does this mean I need new firmware installed?

      I just installed TH3D Unified Firmware on my Ender 3 Pro. I was fairly easy using my Arduino UNO to install the bootloader. Then I set the Thermal runaway timeouts to 20 seconds and used the USB method to verify that it worked and I received the Thermal Runaway Error message like I should. I feel a little better now about using this machine.
      There are some issues in the TH3D Firmware configuration settings that I have not found any answers to yet. Specifically thermal runaway timeouts; 60 seconds for the hotend and 180 seconds for the heated bed seems a bit on the high side. Then the Bed Thermistor setting are all commented out. I am not sure if I should do anything there or not.
      Other than that, the firmware seems to work okay so far other than the Motion controlling for the steppers is not where it was before.

    It is in a enclosure for the first time in its life, do you think this is thermal runaway or it shutting down due to the electronics being to hot? Its the bigger creality enclosure with 250c on the hotend and 100c on the bed.

I decided to build a safety circuit that kills all power to my printer if any component gets hotter than I want it to. It works and I made a video guide about how I did it on my channel. @@Nachobussy Try this alternate method. Since you know the board can be powered via USB, turn the printer ON, and heat the nozzle to 200˚C. Once the nozzle is at temperature, make sure you have a USB power source connected to the board, so it'll stay on when you turn the printer off. Then ...turn the printer OFF. The board will still run, but it won't be able to maintain the 200˚C temperature while solely powered via USB. The temperature will drop enough that it triggers the TRP message.

      @Nachobussy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BV3D THANKS for the quick response! with this alternate method the TRP triggered in less than 1 minute since I turned off the main power. • @BV3D
      @BV3D  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Nachobussy I think what's going on is that the printer is able to run the nozzle heater just a little bit when it's on USB power, so it sees the temperature creeping up a little bit and it's being patient, hoping it'll keep climbing. But I suspect if you waited long enough, TRP would trigger. Might take a little while though.
      The actual TRP error when heating from a cold start says something like "HEATING FAILED" instead of "THERMAL RUNAWAY." Thermal Runaway is the error message you get when the nozzle was already hot but then the temp drops off.

    • @Nachobussy
      @Nachobussy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BV3D Okk perfect! I run another test and the USB power is indeed running the nozzle heater at some level. In 6 minutes it went from 36ºC to 43ºC, then it stayed at 43ºC for 20 minutes whitout giving any errors and I decided to end the test. But its clear that it's detecting some temperature change. In any real event during a print I guess that shouldn't happen. Temperature should drop despite having the heater powered, and I should get the TRP error.
      Thanks a lot!!

After turning the power off and unplugging the USB and power cable I put the boot back into place. With USB and Power cables unplugged I flipped the power switch on to discharge the system completely. I then plugged the power back in and set the nozzle temp to 200c. After setting at 200c for several minutes there was no error. I then set the bed temp to 60c and again did not have the error return. I plugged in the USB cable and still no error.

    Great video but the USB method didn't work. The printer kept warming up and made it to 43C then it flickered to 44C once in a while. This was for 45 min. Didn't think connecting it to the USB port only would heat the end at all. Tried both places to heat the nozzle, Prehead PLA & setting the nozzle temp like shown here. I have an Ender 3 from Spring 2019 and the screen shows version 1.1.6. Not sure what that version is, motherboard or firmware but it's the only thing that shows on the screen in the info section.
    Update: I updated my firmware with both the TH3D Unified & Marlin 1.1.9 and got the same results with these 2 using your method. Shortly after plugging in the powered USB and it loading up, it shut down with a blank blue screen then a bit after that displayed a message system was shutdown due to a temp problem. So definately the oem 1.1.6 didn't have thermal protection and now it does. Good safe test!!

      @BV3D  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Paul! It sounds like it did finally trigger and show the warning. I'd say it's got Thermal Runaway Protection enabled. What I've noticed is that some USB power supplies actually provide enough current to start warming the heater cartridge a little bit, and so it can take longer to trigger because the printer sees the temp climbing, but very slowly.
      An alternate method is to have the USB power supply plugged into the printer, but also turn the printer on and set it to, say, 200˚C on the nozzle. Let it get up to temperature, then turn the printer's power switch off. The USB power supply won't be able to keep the nozzle at that temp and it'll start cooling down. It can take two or three minutes for it to trigger. On one printer I tested, I almost gave up, but then it finally triggered the Thermal Runaway error.
